Your prayers and presence are requested.

By The Rev. Karen King
The journey in ministry is never a path one takes
alone. Many people who share a love and passion for God travel along with you. We sojourn
together to find that near perfect place of nirvana;
or better, we exude that piece of heaven that God
placed in our hearts to share with one another. I
have experienced that piece of heaven here at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
I am grateful, joyful and jubilant that my journey into priesthood will be culminated here on
January 24, 2013. I believe that the celebration of
my ordination is a testament to who you,
Emmanuel’s parishioners, are as loving and
passionate people of God. Thank you for sharing
the God of your heart with me and assisting me
onto a new path as a priest in servant ministry
with you.
Annual Meeting ... cont’d from p.1
To be eligible to serve on the Vestry one must be
a member of the church in good standing for a
minimum of six months – faithful in attendance,
prayer and support of the parish in the manner of a
financial pledge. If you would like to suggest someone to the Nominating Committee, please contact
Maryanne Theyerl at 815/262-1287. The final slate
will be made available as part of the Annual Report
on Sunday, January 20.
2012 ANNUAL PARISH REPORT
DEADLINE
All year-end reports that are to be included in the
2012 Annual Parish Report must be submitted to
the parish office (churchoffice@emmanuelrockford.
org) no later than Tuesday, January 15.
Reports are to be typed and sent via e-mail.
“Panhandling” - What To Do??
By Robert Parker with The Rev. Pamela Hillenbrand
In the past few months I have heard more than
the usual concerns mentioned about people in the
parking lot asking for money. So, I turned to Robert
Parker, Director of the Jubilee Center, for the voice
of experience. Here is his response:
“Emmanuel parishioners, by virtue and faith, are
very generous. Panhandlers also know that church
members are generous. Many fine organizations in
Rockford, (including our own Shelter Care Ministries) meet their Christian obligation to serve the
genuine needs of disadvantaged citizens.
Please believe me, most people who panhandle
know where these services are located. People panhandle for various reasons, but usually it concerns a
need to feed an addiction (i.e. crack cocaine, heroin,
alcohol or – less likely – cigarettes).
No amount of money is going to help panhandlers by feeding their addiction, and it will increase
crime by panhandlers purchasing illegal drugs. Good people can add to the crime problem.
If you have been approached by panhandlers, you
have heard all the reasons people need money: to get
on the bus, buy diapers for the baby, or eat after going days without food. The reasons sound genuine,
but usually are not authentic.
How can you meet the real needs of panhandlers that do seem to have authentic needs? First,
resist the temptation to give money. That will not
solve the problem. Please direct people to the services you are aware of such as Shelter Care Ministries for family housing, Crusader Health System
for medical needs (including diapers), the Rockford
Rescue Mission for food and shelter, and the Jubilee
Center for other needs.
If panhandling occurs on a Sunday and I am in
church, please let me know. Sometimes I know the person and can be of help.” (Pam adds: Please do let either
Robert or me know of any situation on the grounds or
in the building where someone is asking for money.)
2013 Soup Kitchen Challenge
By Stan McGroarty
In the coming year the Emmanuel Soup Kitchen
Team will be hosting 11 Saturdays, about twice
what we have done in the past. I am certain that
the Emmanuel Church Family has the will and the
generosity to make it happen, but it will take a new
level of involvement by those of us who serve at the
Soup Kitchen and from those of us who contribute.
Please keep the Emmanuel Community Kitchen in
your prayers and in your thoughts when deciding
what to do with your charity gifts. It will cost about
$3,500 to support our ministry to Emmanuel’s most
vulnerable neighbors in 2013. As of December 20,
2012 we have about $700 in the bank. Please make
donations to Emmanuel with “Soup Kitchen” on the
memo line of your check. That way Ron will log the
gift to your account and then pass the money along
to the Soup Kitchen.
May God bless you richly in your help to our
neighbors in need.
Men’s Group to Meet
Saturday, January 12
By Lou Matjasko
We meet again Saturday Jan. 12 at 7:30 a.m. in the
Undercroft. We start with fellowship, coffee, and
some good snacks, too. This month Dr. Bart Ehrman
will speak on two topics relative to the making of the
New Testament Canon. The first is: “The Copyists
Who Gave Us Scripture.” The second is: “Authority
in the Early Church.” Be out by 9:30. Please call Lou
Matjasko, 815-624-7690, with questions.

From the Rector
The Ordination Of Karen King
to the Priesthood
Please be part of the Emmanuel Community as
we host the Ordination Service of Karen King to
the Priesthood on Thursday evening, January 24
at 7 p.m. We will have an opportunity to greet our
Bishop, Jeff Lee, people from St. Thomas Episcopal
Church in Chicago, Karen’s home parish, and people
within our larger community of Rockford who have
expressed their intention to attend. (In her five short
months here, Karen has truly been an ambassador
for Emmanuel in our community.)
This is a wonderful opportunity not only to support Karen in this important step in her ministry,
but also to share the spirit of Emmanuel and the
beautiful liturgy of our tradition with people who
have never before worshiped with us.
Adult Study – What’s Next?
Continuing on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m., Bob
Hillenbrand and Bill Scarpaci will complete the series called “A Thrill of Hope – The Christmas Story
in Word and Art” featuring the paintings of John
August Swanson.
When this study concludes in mid-January, we
will return to “Jesus Redux” – considering just how
a first-century man named Jesus remains relevant for
us in the 21st century.
Emmanuel Soup Kitchen
Receives Diocesan Aid
Robert Parker, Director of the Jubilee Center,
received word that the Hunger Committee of the
Diocese of Chicago selected Shelter Care to receive a
$366.67 grant. That money will be put toward Emmanuel’s participation in the Saturday Soup Kitchen.
Helen Klaviter, Treasurer of the Hunger Committee,
wrote: “We are pleased to be able to recognize your
hard work in meeting increased demand with fewer
resources with this small gift.” How very nice to
have the work of Stan McGroarty, our Emmanuel
Soup Kitchen faithful crew, and the work of all the
participating organizations appreciated.
The Reverend Pamela Hillenbrand
Let’s THRIVE
The Diocese of Chicago has begun a leadership
training program by the name of THRIVE. All
churches in the Diocese were invited to apply. Of
the twenty-nine churches that applied, twenty one
were accepted. The THRIVE Leadership Program
will last for two years and involve a component in
the Chicago area and one in the Western part of the
Diocese. Our Diocesan team has worked hard to put
together this program and is making it highly affordable - the only charge to each parish is $300 for the
two years.
Early in the planning stage, Emmanuel was
asked to host the Western component, and invited
to be a participating church. On Friday and Saturday, January 11 and 12, all THRIVE participants
will attend an overnight retreat in Techny, Illinois.
Representing Emmanuel will be Barrie Gibby ,
Vestry member; Karen King, Deacon; and Pamela
Hillenbrand, Rector.
Each parish team is required to have an Accountability Team – people in the parish who will be a
bridge of support and communication between the
Thrive Team and the people of the congregation.
They will meet regularly, assessing goals and fostering vitality and commitment to the mission. In Emmanuel’s case, although only two or three people are
necessary to form the team, the Vestry has offered to
be this Accountability Team.
The THRIVE program lasts for two years, with
participants meeting on scheduled Saturdays and
twice for retreats.
On Sunday, January 6, there will be a commissioning service for Emmanuel’s participants at the
10:30 a.m. service.
On this same theme of THRIVE – remember to
pick up your copy of our new Diocesan magazine
titled – you guessed it – THRIVE. This magazine
will be published quarterly. It is a glossy, full color
magazine highlighting people and exciting happenings around the Diocese. You will find copies of
THRIVE in the narthex and on tables in the parish hall.

Simple Feasts Potluck in February
By Betsy Parker
There will be a potluck in February (date to be set)
for those wanting to participate in the Simple Feast
Dinners. Those interested can sign up at coffee hour
every Sunday in January. There will be sheets on
all the tables that you can sign up for either Friday
or Sunday. These dinners are a good way to get to
know other Emmanuel parishioners better. The
names will be divided into groups of 8, who will
meet 4 times a year for a meal. If you can’t sign up
on Sunday at church, you may call the church office
to sign up. Hope to see you at the Potluck.
An Acolyte Analysis – Carter – Age 10
By Theresa Sinks
Carter is a 4th grader at Carlson Elementary School.
He has been an acolyte at Emmanuel for 2 years.
Here is my interview with Carter:
Theresa: If you were stranded on an island, what 3
items would you want with you other than food and
water?
Carter: Wood, ropes and fabric – so I could build a
boat and get off the island.
T: If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who
would it be and why?
C: George Washington because he was our first
president.
T: Would you rather sing in the rain or dance in the streets?
C: Sing in the rain.
T: What’s your favorite part about being an acolyte?
C: Being able to help out during the service.
T: What is your favorite place to go?
C: I have two – Nevada and Florida.
T: What is your favorite activity to do with friends?
C: Play video games.
T: What do you like to do in your spare time?
C: Ride motorcycles.
T: Tell me about your fantasy ice cream sundae.
C: Chocolate and vanilla ice cream, a big mountain
of whipped cream, a peanut at the top (instead of a
cherry) and sprinkles.

Lessons & Carols, 2012
Choir Thanks
By Trish Rooney & Wayne Hatwich
The members of the choir have been working overtime through the Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas seasons. Thanks to each and every choir member who put forth the extra effort to be sure that our
holiday music was wonderful. The Lessons & Carols
Service was very well received this year. Many community musicians look forward to singing for Lessons & Carols, and our choir serves as the backbone
for that group. Millie Zimmerman made sure that
we had an outstanding roster of readers and that the
event was publicized. The lovely reception hosted by
the Emmanuel Guild was certainly the icing on the
cake for the evening!
The choir not only caroled at several nursing
homes and parishioners’ homes, they also caroled
during the serving time at the Christmas Soup
Kitchen.
It’s a real joy to have college students and family
members from afar come and sing with the choir
on Christmas Eve. We welcomed two new choir
members during this busy season – Bob and Marilyn
Prinzing. Choir rehearsals will resume on January
6th at 9:00 a.m. in the rehearsal room. Please stop
by if you’d like to be a part of this vital ministry.

What a wonderful evening of fellowship!
Emmanuel Guild News
Millie Zimmerman did a great marketing job for us!
By Rosa Birnbaum
Another successful turnout for Lessons & Carols!
After the service, almost two hundred people came
together for the reception and feasted on a variety
of delicious foods prepared by the guild and choir
members.
Special thanks to our chair-ladies, Jean Frana
and Judy Pike for their hard work in planning and
organizing this beautiful reception.
Many thanks to all the guild members that
contributed their time and talents by providing a
delicious assortment of hors d’oeuvres and desserts,
setting up, tearing down, taking on kitchen duties
and serving a variety a tasty drinks.
Thank you also to all Emmanuel members who
attended with their family and friends. The guild is
very grateful for your continued support in making
this event a success.
