Störung
Störung is a multidisciplinary platform of artists that develop audiovisual environments
based on electronic and experimental minimalism using new technological and musical
trends.
It started off in 2006 and as its name suggests -störung means interference-, the
aim of the works presented by this platform is to interfere with the music styles that are
nowadays usually considered electronic music, offering instead an alternative and different sound experience that brings something new to the audience.
To achieve this objective, the main pillar of the platform is experimentation in
the field of real-time sound and improvisation, together with audiovisual projections.
The result is a collection of austere and minimalist works that represent a highly expressive, free and intimate nature.
Nowadays Störung develops the following main activities: Störung Festival,
Störung Label y Störung Radio.
Störung Festival 6
14, 15 & 16.04.2011 - Barcelona
Farinera del Clot (Gran Vía de les Corts Catalanes, 837)
Convent de Sant Agustí (Comerç, 36)
The sixth festival of experimental electronic music and visual arts organized by the platform Störung will start next Thursday 14th of April offering us, during three days, the
performances of outstanding national and international artists of the electronic and experimental scene.
This festival wants to offer the audience the chance of getting to know in detail
different tendencies of the electronic music scene, continuing the work that the multidisciplinary platform Störung has been doing since 2006.
On the 12th of March the program of the event was officially presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) and was followed by the audiovisual
performance of Francisco López: one of great artists related to this project.

Circuit Bending’s Introduction and Immersion
Workshop (8 hours/10 participants)
14.04.2011 / Farinera del Clot
Circuit Bending is the creative and innovative modification, based on short-circuiting, of
low voltage electronic devices (toys, pedals, etc.), with the purpose of creating new electronic instruments and sound generators.
The aim of this workshop is to provide each participant with the necessary electronic knowledge (theoretical and practical) to practice Circuit Bending. We will focus on
tone modification and circuit speed. The first three hours will be devoted to theoretical
aspects, so the participant acquires the necessary knowledge. After that we will open a
toy or device, to expose the circuit and start working on the tone modification and speed
of the system. The participant will understand and get used to circuits, demystifing electronics and will feel comfortable intervening.
Each participant must bring the toy or electronic device he wishes to
modify following Circuit Bending techniques. These must work on low voltage batteries (9 volts maximum). The registration fee includes the electronic components necessary to carry out the modifications, and the necessary tools.
The workshop will be done in Spanish but the teacher speaks also English.

Kim Cascone (b. 1955, USA), became internationally famous in the 80’s working as a
musical editor assistant in David Lynch’s works Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart. Nevertheless, his musical background is far wider. He started his studies in electronic music in
the 70’s and founded in 1986 one of the pioneer labels of electronic music in the States,
Silent Records.
Since mid 90’s his work is centered in audio design and has worked for Headspace and Staccato Systems where he specialized in sound algorithmic synthesis for video games.
In 2008 he became an active collaborator of Störung. For this event he has created a composition based on Circuit Bending and failure aesthetics, using sound pieces
of various artists. This work is going to be diffused exclusively at Störung Festival 6.

Andy Guhl
Performance
14.04.2011 / Farinera del Clot
Andy Guhl (b. 1952, Switzerland), is a pioneer sound artist and one of the fathers of European electronic experimental music. Before starting his solo career in 2003 Guhl was a
member, with the artist Norbet Möslang, of the legendary duo Voice Crack.
As part of Voice Crack, he has strongly influenced multiple generations of musicians and artists of the international noise movement. In 1983 they began to crack everyday electronic devices, manipulate them and experiment with them in performances,
breaking down the traditional barrier between daily items and musical instruments and
their acoustic perception. In the 90s the duo expanded into visual representations of
acoustic phenomena, with installations such as “Sound Shifting” exhibited at the Venice
Biennial 2001.
He is currently working with his instrument called “expanded cracked everyday
electronics”: a sound and image generator that works through a sensor that translates
light into sound and generates a totally abstract audiovisual show.
Andy Guhl has given numerous concerts, lectures, exhibitions and workshops in
many countries, and he is considered to be one of the pioneering artists of the philosophies of Do It Yourself (DIY).

Juan Matos Capote
Performance
14.04.2011 / Farinera del Clot
Juan Matos Capote is an experimental audiovisual artist from the Canary Islands. Since
2008 he lives in Barcelona (Spain). He has studied Circuit Bending with pioneer Reed
Ghazala in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and Deep Listening techniques with composer and
musician Pauline Oliveros, Ione and Heloise Gold in New York and Girona.
He has taught several Circuit Bending workshops in USA. In Catalonia he has
given workshops at the Escola Superior de Disseny, in Hangar, in CCCB, in Miscelanea,
in Estudio Circuit Torçat, etc., and he has lectured on this subject at various festivals and
events such as Störung 5.0, Hydrophonia Barcelona , Eweek-Vic and at Gargall Festival.
In his concerts uses electronic circuits he has created and modified (toys, radios,
oscillators, pedals), as well as field recordings. Many of his circuits are characterized by
a random, yet controllable behavior. He has participated in various music festivals such
as: Transmediale, Sónar 2010, Störung 5.0, Ciclo Hum, etc. He plays solo and is also
member of of Monolith (circuit bending - electroacustic duo) with artist Alfredo Costa
Monteiro, and Árum (circuit bending - amplified objects duo) with artist Lali Barrière.

tools, all of which share experimentation as a common trait. Francisco López, D-Fuse,
Kim Cascone, Alan Courtis, Onionlab, Hugo Olim, Simon Whetham, elufo or XX+XY
Visuals are some of the artists included in this future release.
Asmus Tietchens
Performance
15.04.2011 / Farinera del Clot
Asmus Tietchens (b. 1947, Hamburg), also known by the monikers Hematic Sunsets and
Club of Rome, is one of the most prestigious sound artists in Germany.
He started to compose electro-acoustic music in the sixties, experimenting
with tape recorders, tapeloops and synthesizers. In 1984 he publishes “Former letzter Hausmusik”, where Tietchens’ real interest starts to appear: modifying sounds
until they are unrecognizable and placing them in their adequate relationships
with other sounds, following what the sounds themselves require. The final composition tries then to reflect the nature of the materials. Tietchens has used several
sources to carry out this proposal; water, human voices and old tape recorders. Since
2000 Tietchens has worked again with synthesizers, but only as a source of sounds.
In his extensive discography he has recorded more than 50 LPs and CDs for numerous labels from around the world (Nurse With Wounds United Dairies, Sky Records,
Störung, Mille Plateaux Ritornell, Staalplaat, Selektion, to name a few). Asmus Tietchens will publish in 2011 a new album, entitled Soirée, on Richard Cartier’s Label.

Novi_sad
Performance
15.04.2011 / Farinera del Clot
Novi_sad is the moniker for Thanasis Kaproulias (b. 1980), a self-learning sound artist,
based in Athens, who began generating sounds in 2005, influenced by the pioneers of
audio assault.
Novi_sad explores sound as sensation pulling apart its physical properties to reveal its relationship with human perception. Some of his projects are primarily focused
in architectural acoustics and the relationship between architecture and sound, creating
vertiginous structures that destruct and reconstruct architectonic, organic and sentimental abstractions with precision and hypnotic beauty, functioning as a gateway into
eternity.
Other projects, as the one he is presenting in this concert, Sirens, are based on
multiple ways of analysis of various types of recordings and are developed applying numerical and quantitative data from major stockmarket crashes in history.
Novi_sad has worked and collaborated with: Francisco López, Mika Vainio (Pan
Sonic), BJ Nilsen, Daniel Menche, and others. Thanasis Kaproulias is published by Touch
Music and he is the General + Artistic director of Hertz Festival.

Asférico
Performance
16.04.2011 / Convent de Sant Agustí
Alex Gámez (b. 1981, Barcelona), got interested in electronic music and visual arts very
early, and after spending some years learning and developing in this artistic field, he
founded in 2006 the project Störung - a platform acting as a meeting point where sonic
and visual art are given great importance and treated with special care.
The concert “100 Artists at Störung” is the live version of a project designed by
Asférico - a composition resulting from the collaboration of 100 artists, each generating
pieces, field recordings or unpublished sonic experiments, never more than 1 minute
long, from which Asférico creates a final composition through various editing processes.
It consists of a tangible sample of the network of artists working with Störung,
including original pieces composed by Pjusk, Mise_en_Scene, Francisco López, Kim
Cascone, Murcof, Matter, Retina.it, Philippe Petit, Zimoun, Saffron Keira, Mike Rooke,
Novi_sad... “100 Artists at Störung” will be released in early 2012 on his own label.

Retina.it
Performance
16.04.2011 / Convent de Sant Agustí
Retina.IT is Lino Monaco and Nicola Buono. After their previous proyect Qmen dissolved, these two italian musicians formed Retina.IT with the objective of exploring the
limits of electronic music, but without losing the energy and essence of their previous
work.
In 2001 they published their first LP Volcano waves 1-8 in Hefty records: an
album influenced by subterranean vibrations, where the rhythmic vibrations point towards their shared techno background, but where also more experimental elements appear. After the record, some 12” and an EP (Immediate Actions) followed, in which they
proposed different point of views, always in mutation, from which to examine the electronic matter. In 2004 their second album appears, S/T, published in Mousikelab and in
2007 their third album: Semeion. This performance will be very special because it will
take place on the release date of Randomicon, thier new album released by FlatMate
Music, Störung’s sublabel.
During all these years Retina.IT has shared stage with Kraftwerk, Plaid, Alva
Noto, Rechenzentrum, Pole, Apparat, Matmos, Telefon Tel Aviv, Ikue Mori & Zeena Parkins, among others.
