SHERMAN’S WAY
Sherman’s Way starts with two strangers forced into a road trip of convenience only to veer off the path into a quirky exploration of friendship,
fatherhood and the annoying task of finding one’s place in the world – a
world in which one wrong turn can change your destination.
The discord begins when Sherman, (Michael Shulman) a young, uptight IvyLeaguer, finds himself stranded on the West Coast with an eccentric
stranger and washed-up, middle-aged former athlete Palmer (James Le
Gros) in an attempt to make it
down to Beverly Hills in time for
a career-making internship at a
prestigious law firm. The two
couldn't be more incompatible.
Palmer is a reckless charmer
with a zest for life; Sherman is
an arrogant snob with a sense
of entitlement. Palmer is content reliving his past; Sherman
is focused solely on his future.
Neither is really living in the
present. The only thing this odd couple seems to share is the refusal to
accept responsibility for their lives.
Director Craig Saavedra brings his witty sensibility into this poignant look
at fatherhood and friendship that features indie stalwart James Le Gros in
an unapologetic performance that manages to bring undeniable charm to
an otherwise abrasive character.
SHERMAN’S WAY is a Starry Night Entertainment production directed by
Craig Saavedra (RHAPSODY IN BLOOM) and written by Tom Nance (NED

Michael Frank (BABYSITTERS CLUB, A LIFE IN THE THEATRE and HARD
TO KILL), production design by Laurent Turlure (SOMETHING’S WRONG IN
KANSAS) and music supervision by Dondi Bastone (SIDEWAYS, POLLOCK
and ELECTION).
GETTING STARTED...
When Craig Saavedra and Michael Shulman decided to form a production
company together in 2005, the duo agreed to seek out and develop material
that explored the process of artistic creation, a natural given that Michael had
studied Art History at Yale University, and
Craig had grown up in a family of artists.
After scouring hundreds of existing plays,
scripts and other source materials, the
two producers felt that perhaps the best
story to inaugurate their company was
right beneath their noses. Having entered
the entertainment industry at roughly the
same time – Craig as a story reader in
Hollywood in his twenties, and Michael as
a child actor on Broadway at the age of
eight – both were seasoned veterans with disparate backgrounds. But it
was not their industry experience, but rather their life experience that most
interested them. Mike’s east coast, cosmopolitan, Ivy League upbringing
contrasted with Craig’s decidedly west coast, small town outlook steeped in

meritocracy seemed to offer up a dynamic ripe for adapting into a compelling story.
Armed with a brief plot outline that centered around an uptight recent Yale
graduate bent on planning for the future forced into a road trip with an
eccentric middle-aged former success who insists on
enjoying life “in the moment,” they sought out a writer
that would effectively capture both worlds and both ages
with equal aplomb. Enlisted to write the script was Craig’s
longtime friend, and sometime collaborator Tom Nance, a
writer best known for his work on the highly popular
PERFECT STRANGERS and NED AND STACY sitcoms.
“Tom understood the dynamic we were looking for immediately,” recalled Craig, “He took the basic idea and made
it his own, infusing humor and pathos – and skinny-dipping. What more can you ask for in a movie?”
“What emerged was a terrific story with both heart and
comedy about fatherhood and friendship,” added Michael.

Michael and Craig met in 1999 on a film in which Craig
directed and Michael co-starred. “Even as a teenager, I
knew that Michael’s interest in the filmmaking process, not just acting,
would lead to his involvement behind the camera some day. Although I never
imagined years later forming a company with him. He wasn’t even old
enough to drive a car back then.”
“We would constantly be making little movies, shorts and stuff,” said Tom of
his high school days with Craig, who lived just blocks away. “Although we
took turns directing, it was usually Craig on screen because he was the only
one in our circle of friends that could grow stubble back then so he played
all the adult and tough guy roles.”

When it came time to cast SHERMAN’S WAY, the producers turned first to
their friends.
“I had worked with both Donna (Murphy) and Lacey (Chabert) before, and
really wanted them in this film,” said Michael recently, “Donna played my
mom in SOMEONE HAD TO BE BENNY and Lacey and I had played
boyfriend/girlfriend on PARTY OF FIVE. We also worked together on
Broadway in LES MISERABLES. So it’s nice to be reunited with them both.”
“I met Enrico (Colantoni) years ago, and have long wanted to work with
him. He’s brilliant at comedy, drama, you name it. A truly great actor –
probably the most under-rated actor working today” added Craig. “As DJ,
he is the heart and soul of the film. I can’t wait to work with him again.”
Indie legend James Le Gros was enlisted to headline the cast. “I actually
met with James for another role,” reminisced Craig, “But within moments
it was obvious to me that he was the perfect Palmer – despite the fact that the
character was written for someone a good
ten years older than James. At the time, we
had an offer out to another actor for the
role, but thankfully, that didn’t work out.
These things seem to happen for a reason
and the funny thing is, I can’t picture anyone other than James as Palmer. He lights
up the screen in an unapologetic performance that manages to bring undeniable
charm to an otherwise abrasive character.”
Brooke Nevin was cast as the local girl with
whom Sherman falls in love. “She is a kind of quirky girl with an eclectic
interest in the world around her, who loves sunflower crops, paints motorcycle tanks and thinks pocket change is cool because when you enter a

room, that jingle of coins will bring on memories of sleigh bells and jackpots,” stated Brooke, “I had such a great time filming this movie.”
It was decided that
in order to capture
the small town feel
of the script, and to
visually contrast
Manhattan, shooting
the picture outside
of Los Angeles was
essential. Craig,

scouted every small
town from Santa
Barbara to Lake
Tahoe and ultimately
decided upon Lake County, a wine and recreation center about an hour and
a half north of San Fransisco.
“It was gorgeous, and the people were absolutely great,” explained Mike,
“The towns of Kelseyville and Lakeport opened up their arms to us. This
film would not have been possible without them.”
“The place was like our very own backlot,” added Tom, “We adjusted the
script to reflect the area’s unique locals and even enlisted the townsfolk for
bit parts and as extras.”
Early on in the project, cinematographer Joaquin Sedillo was brought on
board to oversee the visual style of the film. “Having lived together for so
long, I’m pretty good at interpreting Craig’s thought-process,” Joaquin said
of his domestic partner of 18 years, “He thinks visually and it’s great when
a DP and director can effortlessly communicate. There wasn’t that awk-

ward period of trying to figure out what the other person is really trying
to say.”
“Joaquin is really a painter. A painter of light,” adds Craig, “He knows my
taste better than anybody and brought a real polish to what is actually a
very small, intimate film. Besides, it was nice having my best friend in
the world at my side on those long days that weren’t going exactly
as planned.”

series VERONICA MARS,
Joaquin was able to bring
with him to northern
California a bulk of his regular crew, making the
shoot feel even that much
more like a family project.
“We shot 14 locations in
eight days, then spent the
next ten days at a secluded lake,” recalls Craig, “It was pretty grueling,
especially in the 100+ degree heat. Well, for those of us who weren’t
lounging in the lake...” “Lounging?” interrupts Mike, “I was THROWN in!
With my clothes on!” “Oh, yeah. Well, anything for art, right?”
In addition to the 18 days in Northern California, the production shot a
day in New York, a day at Yale, a day in San Diego and another day on a
studio backlot in Los Angeles.

THE PLAYERS
JAMES Le GROS (Palmer van Dyke) has appeared in over 50 films and 20
television shows, including Tom Dicillo’s LIVING IN OBLIVION (1995), for
which Le Gros was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for his portrayal of Chad Palomino opposite Steve Buscemi, Catherine Keener,
and Dermot Mulroney. Le Gros also starred as Joe ‘Mac’ McBeth in
Billy Morrissette’s Sundance favorite SCOTLAND, PA (2001). More
recent film credits include Bart Freundlich’s TRUST THE MAN
(2005), opposite Julianne Moore, and Greg Harrison’s NOVEMBER
(2004), opposite Courtney Cox, and Bart Freundlich’s CATCH THAT
KID (2004).
Despite over 30 independent films to his credit, Legros is perhaps
most recognized for his portrayal of Roach, a member of Patrick
Swayze’s gang of bank robbing Ex-Presidents in Kathryn Bigelow ‘s
POINT BREAK (1991), and Rick, Matt Dillon’s drug-addicted cohort in
Gus van Sant’s DRUGSTORE COWBOY (1989). Other film credits includes
VISIONEERS (2007), LAST WINTER (2006), BORN ON THE 4th of JULY
(1989) ENEMY OF THE STATE (1998), BAD GIRLS (1994), SINGLES (1992).
Le Gros is an Emmy Award nominated actor for his portrayal of Mark
Albert on David E Kelley’s ALLY MCBEAL, and has recently appeared as
Special Agent Ray Fuller on Showtime’s SLEEPER CELL. Guest stints
include: LAW AND ORDER, FRIENDS, E.R., COMMON GROUND, LA DOCTORS, ROSEANNE, and THE OUTER LIMITS.
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Le Gros currently resides with his family in
Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

ENRICO COLANTONI (DJ) is known to television audiences worldwide as
womanizing fashion photographer Elliot DiMauro on 7 seasons of NBC’s
JUST SHOOT ME. Colantoni most recently played Keith
Mars on CW’s VERONICA MARS, for which he was nominated for a 2006 Teen Choice Award.
Colantoni is best remembered on film for his critically
acclaimed work as Mathesar in Dean Parisot’s GALAXY
QUEST (1999), Steven Spielberg’s ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE:A.I. Joseph Ruben’s MONEY TRAIN (1995),
Rupert Wainwright’s STIGMATA (1999), and Steven
Soderbergh’s FULL FRONTAL (2002).
Colantoni has guested on over 20 television shows,
including USA’s MONK, NBC’s THIRD ROCK FROM THE
SUN, LIFETIME’s 1-800-MISSING, NBC’S NYPD BLUE
and NBC’s LAW AND ORDER.
Born in Toronto, Canada, Colantoni is a graduate of the
Yale School of Drama.
MICHAEL SHULMAN (Sherman Black / Producer) is an Emmy and Cable
Ace award nominee (the youngest in the Award’s history) for his portrayal
of Benny Agrelo in HBO’s SOMEONE HAD TO BE BENNY (1996), opposite
Donna Murphy. Television audiences best know his work as Claudia
Salinger’s boyfriend Artie Baum on Fox’s PARTY OF FIVE.
Shulman’s film credits include Robert Brickman in M. Night Shymalayan’s
WIDE AWAKE (1998), Aaron Bloom in Craig Saavedra’s RHAPSODY IN
BLOOM (1999), Paul Mazursky’s THE PICKLE (1993), and Matt Montini in
Jodie Foster’s LITTLE MAN TATE (1991). Television credits include the

MOWs THE PERFECT DAUGHTER (1996) opposite Tracy
Gold, and WHOSE DAUGHTER IS SHE (1995), opposite
Joanna Kerns and Stephanie Zimbalist, and guest stints

Before turning to the film and television, Shulman, who
was born in New York, New York, began his career at an
early age on stage, appearing as Gavroche in LES MISERABLES on Broadway, the original cast of Stepehen
Sonheim’s ASSASSINS, John Guare’s GARDENIA, and
the original cast of John Guare’s FOUR BABOONS ADORING THE SUN. In
2000, Shulman temporarily put the entertainment industry on hold, and
headed off to Yale University, where he graduated with a major in History of
Art in 2004.
BROOKE NEVIN (Addy) began her career on the Canadian rialto, but soon
turned to the silver screen, starring in Siona Ankrah Cameron’s independent film SHORT FOR NOTHING (1998) and Showtime’s RUNNING WILD
(1998), for which she earned a Young Artists Award nomination. As Nevin’s
career took off with ANIMORPHS (1998-2000), she moved from
Canada to Los Angeles, where she has quickly been racking
up a large and diverse body of credits. While television audiences know her work on USA’s THE 4400 (2004) and guest
stints on WB’s EVERWOOD (2006), CW’s SMALLVILLE (2005),
Brooke’s film work in Sylvain White’s I’LL ALWAYS KNOW
WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER,” (2006) caught the eye of teen
audiences.
Born in Toronto, Canada, Nevin’s other films include: David
Lee Miller’s MY SUICIDE (2006), Tom Brady’s THE COMEBACKS (2007), and Abe Levy’s ONE OF OUR OWN (2007).

DONNA MURPHY (EVELYN BLACK) is a two-time Tony and three-time
Drama Desk Award winner best know for her critically-acclaimed work on
Broadway, making Ben Brantley of the New York Times declare “On your
knees, citizens of Broadway. A superwoman walks among
you.” Murphy’s first Tony and Drama League Award wins
were for her portrayal of Fosca in Stephen Sondheim’s PASSION (2004), and her second for her portrayal of Anna
Leonowans in the highly-acclaimed revival of THE KING AND
I (1998). More recently, Murphy was nominated for a third
Tony for her above-the-title role as Ruth Sherwood in
Kathleen Marshall’s revival WONDERFUL TOWN (2005) and is
starring in City Center’s FOLLIES (2007) and Hal Prince’s
LOVEMUSIK (2007).
Movie audiences best know Murphy’s work as the wife of villain Dr. Octavius (played by Alfred Molina) in Sam Raimi’s
SPIDER-MAN 2 (2004) and her role of Judy Jonas in Oliver
Stone’s WORLD TRADE CENTER (2006), and her recent turn
as Judy, Scarlett Johansson’s mom in Shari Springer Berman and Robert
Pulcini’s film adaptation of The NANNY DIARIES (2007).
Murphy’s television credits include her Emmy and Cable Ace Award winning
portrayal of Benny Agrelo’s mother in HBO’s SOMEONE HAD TO BE BENNY
(1996), her recurring roles on ABC’s WHAT ABOUT JOAN, Stephen Bochco’s
MURDER ONE, and her guest stints on STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP.
Born in Queens, New York, Murphy is a versatile singer, and can be heard
on a number of recordings including "Leonard Bernstein's New York"
(Nonesuch), "Hello Again" (RCA Victor) "The King and I" (Varese Sarabande)
and the Grammy Award winning "Passion" (Angel).

LACEY CHABERT (Marcy) is best known for her portrayal of Claudia
Salinger on seven seasons of Fox’s PARTY OF FIVE, for which she was
nominated for 5 Young Artist Awards, as well as Chabert’s portrayal of
Gretchen opposite Lindsay Lohan and Rachel
McAdams in Mark Water’s MEAN GIRLS (2004) for
which she won a 2005 MTV Movie Award.
Recent film credits include her portrayal of Dana
Mathis in Glen Morgan’s remake BLACK CHRISTMAS
(2006), Jane in Bryan Goeres’s THE LOST (2007), Becky
in Allen Wolf’s IN MY SLEEP (2007), John Carter’s
FATWA, and Jenny in Steve Carr’s DADDY DAY CARE
(2003), opposite Eddy Murphy.
Television credits include ABC Family’s HELLO SISTER, GOODBYE LIFE
(2006), and the title character in Christopher Reeve’s directorial debut THE
BROOKE ELLISON STORY (2004).
Chabert began her career at an early age on Broadway playing Cosette in
LES MISERABLES and gained early big screen praise for her portrayal of
Penny Robinson in the 1998 movie based on the 1960s TV show Lost in
Space.
Younger audiences also know Chabert’s voice as Eliza Thornberry in the
animated series THE WILD THORNBERRYS and film versions of THE WILD
THORNBERRYS (2002) and RUGRATS GO WILD! (2003).
Born in Purvis, Mississippi, Chabert was featured as cover girl of the
January 2007 issue of MAXIM.
THOMAS IAN NICHOLAS (Tom) began his career at the age of seven when
he was cast to portray a young Tony Danza on WHO'S THE BOSS? Since his
debut, he has landed many guest and lead roles on television including a

guest starring story arc on the last season of PARTY OF FIVE in
2000 as Lacey Chabert’s boyfriend. He also starred in several
family feature films including ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, A KID IN
KING ARTHUR'S COURT and its sequel, A KID IN ALADDIN'S
PALACE.
His most memorable role to date is portraying Kevin Myers in
the smash hit trilogy of "AMERICAN PIE, AMERICAN PIE 2 and
AMERICAN WEDDING. In 2002, he co-starred in THE RULES OF
ATTRACTION opposite James Van Der Beek and HALLOWEEN:
RESURRECTION opposite Jamie Lee Curtis. In Showtime’s
STEALING SINATRA, he portrayed Frank Sinatra Jr. and costarred with William H. Macy. Thomas also holds a love of
music equal to his love of acting. He plays the guitar, sings and
writes his own songs.
THE CREATIVE TEAM
Craig Saavedra (Director / Producer) made his directorial debut on TV’s
award-winning RHAPSODY IN BLOOM starring Penelope Ann Miller and
Ron Silver (Best Feature Film, Sedona International Film Festival; Best
Actress, Hollywood Film Festival). Prior to turning to directing, Saavedra
headed the Sydney and Los Angeles-based production company Becker
FilmWorks Entertainment where he produced numerous feature film and
television projects including AT FIRST SIGHT, ONLY YOU and CLOSER AND
CLOSER.
Raised in Thousand Oaks, California, Craig currently resides in Los Angeles
with his partner Joaquin Sedillo and their son Josh.

Tom Nance (Writer / Producer) is best known for his work in television,
penning four seasons of PERFECT STRANGERS, starring Mark Linn-Baker
and Bronson Pinchot. Following his much-lauded work on the show, Tom
went on to write NED AND STACY, starring Thomas Haden Church and
Debra Messing. After a stint at Disney, Tom branched out into advertising
creating numerous award-winning campaigns for national and international clients like DTS and BP Solar.
Michael Shulman (Sherman Black / Producer) is the New York partner and
co-founder of Starry Night Entertainment, LLC. Shulman and Saavedra
founded Starry Night Entertainment in August 2004 with the mandate of
bridging the worlds of stage and screen and developing character and dialogue driven films and plays.
Joaquin Sedillo (Cinematographer) is a USC School of Cinema & TV graduate with nearly 50 credits to his name, including the hit TV series VERONIC
MARS, and the upcoming Alan Poul (SIX FEET UNDER) CBS drama SWINGTOWN. His feature film credits include Dirk Shaffer’s CIRCUIT and
Jonathan Segal’s THE LAST RUN.
Christopher Gay (Editor) is a recent graduate the American Film Institute
whose credits include BYE BYE BENJAMIN, SADIE AND THE SLOT
MACHINES and the acclaimed Sundance Film Festival documentary PIPE
DREAMS.
David Michael Frank (Composer) was born and raised in Baltimore,
Maryland where he studied classical piano and composition at the Peabody
Conservatory of Music. After graduating from Nothwestern University,
David moved to New York, where he became Broadway's youngest conductor. After six years in New York, David moved to California to pursue a
career in film composition. He has scored over 200 episodes of television
series such as Columbo, Different Strokes and Fortune Hunter. David was
nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the 'Sammy Davis Jr.' tribute starring Michael Jackson and Eddie Murphy in 1990.
Dondi Bastone (Music Supervisor) first cut his teeth on Barry Sonnenfeld's
GET SHORTY over a decade ago and has since supervised music for more
than thirty film and television projects, including SIDEWAYS and ELECTION

for director Alexander Payne, Ed Harris' decade-long labor of love and directorial debut, POLLOCK, writer-director-star Matt Dillon's CITY OF GHOSTS
and THE HUMAN STAIN for legendary Oscar winning writer/director Robert
Benton. You can add to this list Steve Anderson with whom Dondi first
worked on THE BIG EMPTY, Steve's debut feature. Other credits include the
films HOME FRIES, THE CREW, NO VACANCY, SEX MONSTER, A TIME FOR
DANCING, JOSHUA, HBO's PORNUCOPIA, the Emmy winning documentary
