DEMENTIA CAREGIVER TRAINING FOR FAMILIES Thursday, October 27, 5-8:30 pm WBA90 @ The Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands Caregiver Support Program will provide a training program developed for families and friends caring for a loved one with dementia. Topics include understanding memory loss, living with dementia and using the Cares Approach. They will return on November 14 for information on support groups that will link caregivers, family and friends of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia with others. LONG ISLAND’S GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS Tuesday, October 18, 7-8:30 pm WBA21 @ Join Eco-Photo explorers Chris Weaver and Michael Salvarezza as they return to the Library to explore some of the most chilling stories from all across the Island. In this program, viewers will learn about haunted cemeteries, ghosts that appear and disappear from some of the creepiest dwellings on Long Island and strange tales of unexplained paranormal activity. Monday, October 31, 10 am-8 pm children up to grade 5 with caregiver Trick-or-treat at the Library! Children wearing Halloween costumes are invited to start in the Children’s Room and then visit different areas in the Library to get even more treats (edible and non-edible). Add us to your trick or treat route, see the Children’s Librarians in costumes and do fun crafts! HARRY POTTER-THON Saturday, November 5, 10 am-5 pm Sunday, November 6, 1-5 pm children up to grade 5 and family On Saturday, the story begins with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and will continue throughout the day with the films in series order. On Sunday, the marathon concludes with the end of the story, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2, starting promptly at 1 pm. Come dressed in your favorite Harry Potter wear and/or make your own wand, house banner and other Harry Potter crafts. All November, children may stop by the Children’s Room to enter a Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans Guessing Contest to win the jelly beans and a special Harry Potter prize. ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Tuesday, November 15, 2-3:30 pm WBA55 @ Learn about The Caregiver Coaching Program that assists caregivers in meeting the daily challenges and responsibilities of caregiving by helping them navigate the many resources and options that are available. Interested patrons will receive free one-on-one support from a trained volunteer coach that will serve as a vital resource and help them avoid operating in crisis mode. No registration necessary. Patrons will be helped on a first come, first served basis. In recognition of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, please join a representative from the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center for this informative discussion which will include facts and myths about this disease, warning signs, local and national research and resources to assist local families. A representative from Project Lifesaver, a rapid-response program that aids clients (and their families) who wander as a result of cognitive impairments, or other afflictions, will also be present to address any questions. Jaskulek, owner of Sej Designs and a graduate of the NYC Fashion Institute of Technology, will answer your decorating questions and guide you with your room décor project by discussing paint trends and classics, the psychology of color and paint finishes. An interior design basket will be raffled off at the end of the class. Registration is underway. George Roach, former Chief Attorney for the Legal Aid Society, will speak about protecting assets from the cost of catastrophic illness. This includes the need for durable Powers of Attorney, Health Care Proxies, Living Wills, Medicaid planning and Long Term Care Insurance. Updates on the new Medicare changes will also be discussed.
