Tail. On August 28, 2015 the Qwuloolt Estuary project was completed by the Tulalip Tribes and its partners creating the state’s second largest estuary restoration project. The levee was breached restoring tidal marshes, tidal channels, mudfl ats and natural habitat infl uences within the former 340-acre dairy site in south Marysville adjacent to Ebey Slough. For over one hundred years the area had been cut-off from tidal activity as a result of the levee. One key component of this project was the inclusion of a trail system to be developed on the existing dike and the City has moved forward in developing the trail for public access. The new Ebey Waterfront Trail is accomplished due to partnerships with the Tulalip Tribe, City and Aquatic Lands Enhancement Fund which is granted funds through the States Recreation Conservation Office. The first phase of the project will be accomplished by fall of 2016. The trail head will begin on the east side of the SR 529 overpass with the trail heading east following the shoreline to the western breach terminal. This trail length is approximately 1.8 miles. On the east side of the breach, a new trail surface will be installed from the eastern terminal connecting to the existing Harborview Trail for 2.4 miles of trails for public use. In the second phase, the new trail will be connected to the Ebey Waterfront Park utilizing a trail corridor under the SR 529 bridge. That phase may be completed in 2017. The Ebey Waterfront Trail will feature two designed viewpoint areas overlooking the restored estuary. Trail improvements will also include site furnishings, picnic areas, fencing and interpretive elements throughout. The City has contracted with Mayer/Reed of Portland OR to assist in trail design, interpretive kiosks and panels as well as other amenities that will highlight the restored estuarine habitats and efforts of the Tulalip Tribes and partners. “It is exciting to be a part of a project that restores this estuary and supports salmon habitat while also providing us with an opportunity to open up an incredible new recreational trail system for our community,” noted Mayor Jon Nehring. “The stunning views and access to the wildlife of this area is something that most of our residents have not previously been able to experience.” A trail dedication ceremony will be planned this fall. For more information, please contact Jim Ballew at the Parks, Culture and Recreation office at 360-363-8400.
