Welcome
The undeniably
exciting history
of Roskilde and
Lejre

– an ancient centre of power and
contemporary culturel centre
According to legend and various
chronicles Lejre played a large role
in unifying Denmark. Because of
the many archaeological finds in
Lejre, these legends, tales and ancient worldviews have gained new
attention. There is a surprising correlation between numerous finds
and stories and the legends about
a great monarch who settled in the
area. Lejre was clearly a significant
centre of power in ancient times.
With Harald Bluetooth, the centre of power moved to Roskilde,
which at that time was a European
metropolis larger than London.
The first Islands’ Assembly of the
Estates of the Realm took place in
Roskilde and formed the basis of
Denmark’s Constitution.
The past is part of our present
even though it is long gone. Today,
Welcome
Roskilde and Lejre
Roskilde is known not only for its
significance in the history of Denmark, but also for its festival and
the city’s alternative arts and culture scene. Yet ancient remnants
can still be seen in the city, villages
and landscape in the area. The cultural landscape is highly unique in
Lejre, both in the vicinity of Lejre
Museum and in the surrounding
forests, where there are many different paths for walking and cycling. In Roskilde, the buildings and
landscape also boast many cultural
sites.
There’s plenty to do as a tourist
in Roskilde and Lejre. Feel the
presence of history or immerse
yourself in a modern city where
young people open their homes to
couchsurfers.

incredibly beautiful surrounding
countryside.
Many small gems await discovery
that will both surprise and excite
your senses. There’s plenty to do,
so stay for 24, 48 or 72 hours … the
choice is yours.

Go on a
Viking raid
The Vikings in Roskilde and Lejre
were nothing to joke about, and
have produced a deadly serious
and fascinating chapter of history.
Known and feared throughout
the world, the Vikings have an almost mythical reputation that has
grown from multiple sources over
time.
At one point, the Vikings sank five
ships in Roskilde Fjord to prevent
the enemy from sailing into Roskilde, the resulting blockade of
ships protected the town and the
king against enemy attacks. The
Viking ships, which have been excavated and reconstructed, are on
display at the Viking Ship Museum
in Roskilde.
Lejre has a completely different
history, as witnessed by the poem
BeowuIf. Beowulf was the nephew
Page 10 / VisitRoskilde / Guide
of the Geatish king Hygelac,
whose relations had close contact
with king of the Danes’ court. In
Beowulf the old king of the Danes,
Rolf, is in deep distress because a
monster menaces his great hall,
abducting and eating one of his
warriors every night. The hall was
otherwise the gathering place for
large feasts with singing and dancing. After the monster had raged
on for 12 years, Beowulf decided
to come to the rescue of the Danish king. He gathered his warriors
and after a long struggle managed
to slay the monster.
King Rolf was so pleased by this
achievement that he hailed
Beowulf with grand weapons and
gold rings. Later, after Hygelac’s
death, Beowulf became the king
of the Geats, but lost his life in a
battle against a dragon.

DAY 1 Begin mid-morning at the
Viking Ship Museum, which tells
the interesting story of how our
ancestors defended the royal city
of Roskilde. See how ships were
built employing methods used by
the Vikings. Children can dress up
as Vikings or write their names in
runes. In the summer, you can sail
on a Viking ship and feel like a real
Viking.
Enjoy an unusual lunch at Restaurant Snekken, where they prepare
New Nordic cuisine using ancient
Nordic ingredients with a modern
twist and accompanied by a bit of
history. Restaurant Snekken is located right next to the Viking Ship
Museum.
If you prefer traditional Danish
food, then visit Restaurant Rådhuskælderen, located next to the
cathedral.
In the afternoon, visit the cathedral, which has a unique history.
Harald Bluetooth is said to have
built a wooden church in the very
spot where the stone church we
know today stands. The cathedral
is unique because it houses the
royal burial place, a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. See the

THE BIRTH OF LEJRE
The steep hills and numerous small
lakes that make up the natural
landscape of Lejre were formed
about 12,000 years ago during
the Ice Age. When the ice began
to melt, mammoth-sized chunks
remained. Wedged deeply into the
earth, they slowly disappeared,
depositing vast amounts of gravel
and stone that form the many hills
you can admire today. The spaces
that formed between the mounds
later filled with water, creating
various ponds and small lakes.
Swamps, wet areas, beech forests
and forests of elm, maple, oak and
hazel still provide ideal homes for
birds, mammals, insects, fish, shellfish and more.

Lejre´s beautiful
countryside
The countryside surrounding Lejre
and Roskilde offers many things to
do. Enjoy the rich birdlife in the
islets and islands of Roskilde Fjord
or the national forests of Boserup and Hvalsø, which are perfect
for exploring the forest floor and
the landscape of nearby manor
estates. The forests comprise
a mosaic of farm, grass and
wetlands, in addition to a wealth
of ancient monuments. Other interesting areas around Lejre and
Roskilde include Rørmosen swamp
south of Boserup Forest and the
well-laid baroque gardens of
Ledreborg Palace. Many of these
nature areas boast good facilities
Page 30 / VisitRoskilde / Guide
including hiking trails, bird watching towers and shelters.
Southwest of the village of Særløse are three natural gems. The
meadows of Særløse Overdrev are
dotted with grazing cows and are
home to plants specifically found
in grasslands. Bøllesø Lake is an
excavated peat bog that can be
crossed via a boardwalk and home
to various amphibians. From the
lake continue on to the clean
waters of Avnsø Lake, located in
the middle of the forest and used
by bathers both summer and
winter. These three natural gems
are connected by the Scylding Path
and parking is available nearby.

THE CONTRYSIDE
Boserup Forest
One of the most visited natural areas
near Roskilde is Boserup Forest and
there are many good reasons why. A
wonderful place to be year around,
there is room for outdoor recreation, nature experiences and family
fun. The peacefulness of the forest
provides room for quiet contemplation and a network of mountain bike
trails also provides the opportunity
for some serious exercise.
Tadre Mill
This water mill in the valley called
Elverdamsdal dates back to the
Middle Ages. In the area surrounding
Aastrup Abbey at least 13 water mills
once existed, but Tadre Mill, which
is a protected site, is the only fully
functional mill that has been preserved. In 1996 Roskilde Museum
opened a museum and nature centre
at the mill farm that focuses on the
cultural environment and interaction
between people and nature.
Protected under the Nature Conservation Act, Elverdamsdalen is surrounded by beautiful natural gems.
Page 32 / VisitRoskilde / Guide
The area surrounding the village of Gl.
Lejre is especially known for its many
ancient monuments and legends
about the descendants of Scyld. But a
walk among the ancient mounds and
stone ships also lets you experience
the outdoors in a variety of ways.
Protected orchids can be found in the
meadows and a dam from medieval
times has formed a lake where many
birds flock. The area is crisscrossed by
a network of bike and walking paths.

Bolund
The peninsula of Bolund, located
just north of Risø on Roskilde Fjord’s
eastern coast, is a significant landmark with its narrow hills leaning in
toward the coast. From the parking
lot on Frederiksborgvej, a trip to the
peninsula means traversing a protected salt marsh. There is a beautiful
view of Roskilde Fjord from the top of
Bolund. Both the peninsula and the
salt marsh are home to inter-esting
plants and a rich bird life.

In the summertime Roskilde Harbour is a magnet for fun and excitement. On weekday evenings
there is dancing on Museum Island
with line dancing on Tuesdays,
folk dancing on Wednesdays and
Salsa on Fridays. On Thursdays a
large number of classic car owners
meet, often accompanied by live
rockabilly music in front of the
Gasworks arranged by Galleri Labr.
Every Sunday afternoon there’s
jazz on the quayside. Throughout
the week you can visit Skak Snidtker’s beautiful glass gallery and

St Jørgensbjerg
St Jørgensberg is one of the most
beautiful parts of Roskilde, described by its welcoming residents
as located down on the mountain
because their hilltop is not quite as
high as the one Roskilde Cathedral
is built on. This idyllic area is full of
old half-timbered houses, hollyhocks, narrow streets and various
vantage points.
After visiting the harbour head

up the hill to St Jørgens Church,
which offers a beautiful view of
Roskilde Harbour and the Viking
Ship Museum. In the very old days,
St Jørgensberg was an impoverished little village that provided
the city’s inhabitants with fish.
There was a poorhouse, orphanages and a leprosy hospital.
The church walls have holes that
allowed the lepers to stand outside to hear the priest’s sermons.

If you’re young or you’re into skating
then don’t miss out on Hall 12 or
