Neighbourhood Tree Captain Menu of Options Seedling Giveaway – A How to Guide Time commitment: 2 - 4 hours Spring and fall Seedling giveaways can happen at any event where you feel enough people will gather wanting trees. It could be a table set up at the Mosque as Captain Jason has done or at a community gathering which is what Captain Rene did when she went to the SOHO “Junk in the Trunk” event with a wagon load of seedlings. The style of giveaway is up to you and the event you are bringing the seedlings to. We have a variety of display materials that you are welcome to use, from our tent to our “value of trees” banner. To consider this activity as a Neighbourhood Tree Captain you will need: A location to distribute trees Transportation to get the materials to your location Steps in a Seedling Giveaway 1. Mulching: Mulching helps keep soil cool during summer heat, conserves water, reduces competition from other plants, adds organic matter to the soil as it decomposes, reduces soil compaction and reduces the likelihood of damaging the stem with a lawnmower or weed trimmer. Keep the weed whacker and lawn mower away from the base of your trees: These machines easily remove the bark from the base of the tree. The tree’s bark protects the tree from insects and disease, but the layer just beneath the bark, is what transports nutrients to the roots. Exposing this layer damages the tree making it more likely to die.
