Meodorulork Lemon and the Harlem Globetrotters
Are they basketball players or entertainers? In fact, the Harlem Globetrotters
are both. This basketball team delights audiences by combining competitive
basketball with clowning around.
The Globetrotters played their first game in 1927. The owner, Abe Saperstein,
wanted people to know that the players were African American, so he chose the
name Harlem to recognize t};;e New York City neighborhood where African
Americans had worked to
a center of cultural life.

Saperstein set out to develop a serious, competitive team. Then, in the 1930s,

players. After completing high school, Lemon set out to

Globetrotter. A few years later, he became "Clown Prince of
Basketball," the title given to the star player-entertainer
with the team. Lemon would

himself as a player for the Globetrotters for twenty more
years. His trademark on-the-court antic was his half-court
hook shot, which he rarely missed.
The Globetrotters won fans all over the world and are the only sports team to
have their own star on Hollrrwood's 'TV'alk of Fame." They also have found time to
