Dear Hartley Alumni:
This August, Bishop Hartley opened its doors for the 59th year with
the same dedication to Catholic education as in year one. Over the
years, the spirit and tradition that are our school have played a key
role in shaping the educational experience of our young people.
Every class profits from the fine example of you who have gone
before them. Ours has been a tradition of students committed to the
proposition that the privilege of attending Bishop Hartley carries with
it the obligation to put forth their best effort—each and every day
and in everything they pursue.

Last school year’s theme, inspired by the words of Pope Francis, emphasized the importance of
using prayer as the cornerstone in our daily schedule and, in so doing, becoming more mindful
in recognizing and serving the needs of those less fortunate.
This year’s theme is “Where we stand is not as important as the direction in which we are
moving.” Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. speaks to every student, teacher, parent, group, team, and
organization at Bishop Hartley. It reminds us to keep moving forward in a positive direction
despite any obstacles and setbacks. This theme emphasizes the growth mindset philosophy we
have adopted and will remind us that, with grit and perseverance, we as individuals and as a
school will continue to improve.
If there is anything we can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact us. The unvoiced
question cannot be answered, and the missed opportunity rarely offers itself again. We trust
that your experience with Bishop Hartley strengthened your faith in Catholic education, and
we pledge to continue to provide a quality, faith-filled education for generations of future
Hawks.

ALUMNI OFFICE updates
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOARD
The Bishop Hartley Alumni Association Board
met in January 2016 to discuss year end events
and goals. Our new Associate Director of Alumni
Affairs, Michael Rahe, is excited and encouraged
by the response to our winter social, where over
50 alumni shared stories and memories of their
days at Hartley. Our board members have agreed
to continue serving through the 2016-17 school
year, and have several big events planned over
the next year. We are always accepting new board
members and class representatives, if interested
please contact us at [email protected].
EVENING WITH THE HAWKS A WONDERFUL SUCCESS
Bishop Hartley High School inducted its
second class of Athletic Hall of Famers during
the Annual “Evening with the Hawks” celebration
at the school Oct. 24, 2015. Inductees included
Leigh Grey ’86, Denny Parker ’67, Doug Parker
’66, Rodney Parker ’68, Nancy Williams ’79, and
Ann (Maurer) Smith, former athletic director and
coach. The purpose of the event is to celebrate
past, present and future Hawks and raise money
for Bishop Hartley Athletics.
ALUMNI DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
As the new Associate Director of Alumni Affairs, I am excited to be back at Hartley
working to engage our alumni base and get them back to Bishop Hartley. Our Alumni
Association Board has committed to another year, but we are looking for more alumni
to fill a few positions, and we are always looking for class representatives to take a lead
role in assisting with updating contact information.
Over the past two decades, Bishop Hartley has continued to update the school,
athletic facilities and technology capabilities. Schools tours and information sessions
are available on request. I am working with our House Parent Organization (HPO) to
connect our current students’ parents with our alumni to create an atmosphere of
unity for Bishop Hartley.
Look for our updated website which will soon have capabilities of entering contact
information directly at bishop-hartley.org, alumni news.
Forever a Hawk.

The “Evening with the Hawks” includes a social
hour, silent auction, dinner, and the induction
ceremony. The event is made possible through
the support of committee members; volunteers
(Hartley students, alumni, staff, coaches, friends,
parents); business owners who donate raffle
items; and all who attend. The nomination form
for future Bishop Hartley Athletic Hall of Famers
can be found on the school’s website.
Athletic Director, Pat Murphy notes, “Bishop
Hartley High School’s commitment to athletic
excellence is not only reflected in the many state
championships and league titles collected since
1957, but also through the school’s adherence
to high standards of personal conduct and
good sportsmanship on the part of our coaches,
players, and fans.”

Outstanding Volunteer Service
MARY GEISTservice award
Bishop Hartley High School honored two of its own, Wednesday, October 7, with the
presentation of the Mary Geist Service Award to Linda and Gary Strapp. Both Strapps
are graduates of Hartley. They have four daughters who are also graduates of the
school. Another daughter will graduate in 2016, and their youngest daughter will be a
member of the class of 2024.
The Mary Geist Award is given annually during Catholic Schools Week to individuals
who have been of exemplary service to the school and its extended community. Geist
was extremely active in service to her church and to Bishop Hartley, coming to Hartley
as a volunteer in the early 1970s after her retirement and serving until her death in
2003. She was the first recipient of the award in 2000.
Linda and Gary Strapp are both active volunteers at Bishop Hartley as well as St.
Matthew Parish, the Ronald McDonald House, the Gahanna Summer Lunch program,
and other organizations.

HAWKS WIN 3RD FOOTBALL
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
2015 Division IV State Championship:
Hartley 31 Steubenville 28
The Hartley Hawks won the 2015 Division
IV State Football Championship on
December 5 in front of a raucous crowd
at Ohio Stadium with a 31-28 victory
over previously undefeated Steubenville.
Hartley Nation showed strong with over
10,000 people in attendance, making it one
of the top Division IV championships for
attendance of all time.
The Hawks (12-3) entered the playoffs
as the underdog even with several
notable wins during the regular and
playoff seasons. The Hawks opened
the postseason with a 58-25 win over
Port Clinton on Nov. 7 and beat OttawaGlandorf 42-14 on Nov. 14 and Bellevue
28-20 on Nov. 21 to win the Region 12 title.
They then edged Middletown Fenwick —
ranked first in the final state poll — 26-14
in a state semifinal Nov. 28 to reach the
state final. Hartley went 3-1 against CCL
opponents, including a 40-3 win over
Ready on Oct. 30 to capture the CCL-Gold
Division title. Losses came against teams
that went a combined 25-7.
6
This was Hartley’s third state championship,
joining the 1986 and 2010 teams. The
Hawks are tied for the most state football
championships in Franklin County history.
“(Winning the state title) means a great
deal to our school. We have a fantastic
school and we’ve had one of the best
school years ever. Among teams in our
league, we’re tied for the most state
championships, and that’s important to us.”
head coach Brad Burchfield said.
In addition to the historic team finish
as state champs, the Hawks had several
stand-out athletes who earned individual
recognition. They are:

GROWTH MINDSET
The field of education is abuzz with discussion
of Carol Dweck’s concept of a growth mindset.
Principal Mike Winters has promoted the
concept as a building-wide philosophy, so
Bishop Hartley teachers are not only talking
about growth mindset, they are practicing it
within the classroom.
Exactly what is a growth mindset? According
to Dweck, “In a growth mindset, people believe
that their most basic abilities can be developed
through dedication and hard work—brains and
talent are just the starting point. This view
creates a love of learning and a resilience that is
essential for great accomplishment.” The
opposite is a fixed mindset in which “people
believe their basic qualities, like their
intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits.
They spend their time documenting their
intelligence or talent instead of developing
them. They also believe that talent alone creates
success—without effort.”
Hartley teachers have read Dweck’s theory and
continue to participate in continuing education
in-service activities on the subject to better
implement the theory in the classroom.
Students are learning about growth mindset in
the classroom through direct instruction from
teachers as well as info-graphics posted in all
classrooms and hallways. Of course, practice
makes perfect in a growth mindset
environment, and teachers are working to help
students develop a growth mindset even as
they develop their own.
Students are learning that it is important not
only to make an effort, but to explore new
strategies when old ones are no longer working.
Teachers are implementing opportunities for
students to revise assignments, make
corrections, and try new strategies when their
initial attempts are unsuccessful. An
unsuccessful attempt is simply a First Attempt
In Learning, not a failure.
Teachers are becoming more aware of how
language choices affect student mindset. Simply
adding the word yet to the end of a statement
can significantly change the outlook: Students
go from “I’m not really a good writer” to “I’m
not really a good writer, yet.” It takes grit and
determination to follow through and reach the
learning goal.
This year, each teacher has chosen a word to
represent his or her goal for the year. These are
displayed throughout the building on a “wordle”
poster for all students and teachers to see.
Growth Mindset in Action
at Bishop Hartley
To promote growth mindset at Bishop
Hartley, students are encouraged to use the
after-school S.E.E.K. (Students Extending
and Enhancing Knowledge) period. Monday
through Thursday, teachers are available
to meet with students after school from
2:45 to 3:15 to go over questions, address
problems or concerns, and point students
toward areas of further explanation and
exploration. After school activities and
athletic practices do not begin until after
the S.E.E.K. period is over.
For more information about growth
mindset, check these resources:

mindset research leads the field:

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success:

The reality is that everyone is a mixture of a
growth and fixed mindset. Denying this reality
creates what Dweck refers to as a “false growth
mindset.” Adopting a growth mindset
environment at Bishop Hartley continues to
benefit our entire community. The process itself
teaches us to learn from our experiences, and
strengthens our growth mindset. We all learn
from each other.
“In a growth mindset, people believe that their
most basic abilities can be developed through
dedication and hard work”

Hartley Offering Students
Online Courses
The 2015-16 school year is the
inaugural year for an innovative,
on-line elective program which
offers Bishop Hartley students the
opportunity to prepare for career and
college choices. These
programs, offered through a
relationship with eDynamic
Learning, a specialty publisher of
online high school career and elective
courses, are offered free of charge to
current Bishop Hartley students.
The on-line courses complement
Hartley’s college preparatory, honors,
and advanced placement curriculum
by giving students an opportunity to
investigate potential careers and pursue
additional learning interests. Students
have the option of taking the courses
in the computer lab during a study hall
period or outside of the school day,
greatly expanding the elective options
available to them.
This year, 94 students participated,
choosing from among 34 course
offerings. The courses were facilitated
by Mrs. Fulvia Fowler, World Language
Department chairperson and BHHS
class of 1981. The program will grow
to 40 unique courses for the 2016-17
school year.
The on-line course offerings not only
expand students’ elective options, but
also help better prepare them for taking
online courses at the college level, an
expanding part of 21st century
education. For a complete listing of
courses available for the 2016-2017
school year, visit: http://www.bishophartley.org/2016/01/21/hartley-announces-innovative-elective-offeringsfor-2016-17-school-year/.

the National Soccer Coaches of America All-Region Team. This award is presented
bi-annually to both male and female players and recognizes the top athletes in the various

Ohio high school competitive season is in the fall, the players selected for All-Region are
recognized in January at the annual NSCAA Convention. To be eligible for All-Region
consideration, players first must be selected by their respective state through a recognized
coaches’ selection program. Each state is awarded a specific number of slots on the AllRegion teams based on the number of high school coaches that are current NSCAA
members. 4 Elizabeth Hudelson ‘18, performed in the Ballet Met professional production

nominated for the award as the school’s best math student through the end of his junior year. In
addition to a medal and certificate, Kluczynski received a $100 gift card and is now eligible to apply for
a $3000 HPP Scholarship to the Ohio State University College of Engineering for the 2016-2017 school
year. 7 Hartley students Jacob Thompson ‘17 and Sarah Oboy ‘19 participated in this summer’s
Peletonia bike race to raise critical funds for cancer research. This was Jacob’s third year riding in
Peletonia and Sarah’s first. The students, with the help of Jacob’s younger sister, Hannah, raised an
outstanding amount of money–more than $2,700 for the James Cancer Center. Though a veteran
of the race, this year’s Peletonia ride was different for Jacob. He has historically ridden in honor or
memory of his classmates’ family members. But this year, Jacob had a more personal motivation to
ride. This year’s race was dedicated to his grandmothers. In addition, Jacob, a member of the men’s
soccer team, set a new physical goal. He challenged himself to complete the 100-mile race in less
than 6 hours. He accomplished this goal and was able to cross the finish line in tandem with his
godfather, Shaun Kniffin. Shaun lost his mother-in-law to cancer in June, making this year’s ride all
the more poignant. Sarah, a freshman soccer player, completed 25 miles in her debut Peletonia.
She dedicated her ride to her aunt who recently beat breast cancer. 8 Sophomore Madi Weldon
has been recognized by Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS), a
research-validated program that utilizes above-grade-level assessment, as a means of gifted testing,
to help parents and educators better understand their students’ educational needs. NUMATS allows
eligible students to take internationally recognized tests before the grade levels at which they are
normally administered. ACT® and SAT®, designed for students in grades 11 and 12, are administered to
students in grades 6 through 9. NUMATS identifies academic ability, measures growth and connects
students to resources and opportunities for advanced students. 9 Josie Tiberi ‘19 was awarded
two $500 grants through Katie’s Krops, a youth-led initiative to start and maintain vegetable
gardens as a means to end hunger in their local communities. Josie was awarded one grant to
support her four gardens that she uses solely for donations to local food banks. In the past four
years, Josie has donated hundreds of pounds of fresh produce. The other $500 grants will be used
to support Hartley’s Victory House Garden at the Bishop Griffin Center.
