15 school year. It reflects the responsibility we’ve been entrusted with
as current students, families, alumni and friends. The academic learning,
life lessons, personal growth, and spiritual development a student
experiences while at Bishop Hartley are core values that continue well
past graduation. Being vigilant for the opportunity to help others — no
matter how small or insignificant an action may seem, when done in
the name of Jesus Christ with the intent to uplift another — is one we
continually challenge our alumni and friends to embrace.

The school theme also aligns with Pope Francis’s call for us to adopt a
‘Culture of Encounter’ by valuing each person as a child of God; looking outside ourselves to recognize
our collective and individual responsibility to interact with and help others; and engaging those who
are neglected by the wider world, fostering dialogue and friendship with them in an effort to draw
Christ’s people closer to the Church.
We are blessed to have so many alumni who have already responded to the Pope’s call for
engagement and interaction by improving their communities, helping the underserved, and
supporting causes to benefit those in need. We’re fortunate, too, that many alumni elect to share
their “time, talent, and treasure” with their alma mater, attending sporting and arts events, interacting
with our students as classroom speakers and mentors, and reuniting with friends at our alumni and
development events.
While alumni support is strong, Bishop Hartley still has many needs and opportunities for you to
become involved. Could you be an answer to someone else’s prayers? As you ponder this question,
we hope you’ll continue supporting our mission as we strive to transform lives through spiritual
formation, rigorous academic preparation, and servant leadership.
With the holiday season fast approaching, we want to take a moment to wish everyone a blessed
Thanksgiving, joyous Christmas and happy New Year. If your busy holiday schedule has some time,
please visit Bishop Hartley, especially if you are in Columbus visiting family and friends. We’ve made
many exciting and beautiful changes to the campus and we are proud to share them with you.
Throughout the year, you are welcome to visit anytime and we’d love to hear from you.
Sincerely,
FEATURES

Outstanding Volunteer Service
ALUMNI OFFICEupdates
MARY GEISTservice award
Bishop Hartley High School is proud to announce the 2014 Mary Geist Award winners
are Bobby and Kelly Dawes. The award is presented every year during Catholic Schools
Week. The week celebrates Catholic education and is also the best time to celebrate the
outstanding volunteers whose hours of service are so important to Catholic schools.
Their spirits of volunteerism reinforce the pillar of service which is an integral part of
Hartley’s innovative House system.
HOMECOMING SOCIAL ON OCTOBER 10
The Bishop Hartley Alumni Association held
a Homecoming Social before the October 10,
2014 football game between Bishop Hartley
and Bishop Luers. The social featured drinks,
snacks, and a raffle. Raffle items included alumni
apparel, a game jersey, game coin toss, and
sideline passes. The social was well attended and
raised funds for the Alumni Scholarship Fund.
With alumni support this will become a Hartley
tradition in the years to come. Look for future
Alumni Events!
Bobby and Kelly Dawes have not only volunteered their time, talent and treasure; they
have served in leadership positions making many of Hartley’s exciting new initiatives a
reality. Both are accomplished entrepreneurs and business leaders and their experience
and skills add even more to their selfless dedication. They were leadership-level
participants in the renovations to the outdoor athletic facility. Under their purview the
Evening of Excellence silent auction grew exponentially enabling the school to provide
more need-based financial assistance, and the inaugural Evening with the Hawks athletic

ALUMNI DIRECTORS MESSAGE
I was appointed as the Associate Alumni Director in September, 2014. The role
of the Bishop Hartley Alumni Association (BHAA) is to link the current school to
Hartley’s past and to provide support for Bishop Hartley’s students, faculty, athletes,
coaches and alumni.
Our immediate tasks are to form an Alumni Board and recruit class
representatives for the board. The board consists of President, Vice-President,
Secretary-Treasurer and class representatives from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and
2000s.
If you are interested in a board position or being a class representative, please
contact the Advancement Office at 614.237.5421 ext. 10618 or email
[email protected].
Make a difference in someone’s life today.
Sincerely yours,
Walter “Lee” Distelzweig ‘69

The purpose of the event was to celebrate
past, present and future Hawks, and to raise
money for Bishop Hartley athletics. “Tonight is
the beginning of an annual celebration to honor
the ‘Valiant, Brave and True’ of Bishop Hartley
athletics, ” said athletic director Pat Murphy.
The Evening with the Hawks included a social
hour, silent auction, dinner, and the induction
ceremony. The event would not have been
possible without the support of committee
members; volunteers (Hartley students, alumni,
staff, coaches, friends, parents); business owners
who donated auction items; and all who
attended. The nomination form for future Bishop
Hartley athletic Hall of Famers can be found
online at http://www.bishop-hartley.org/athletics/

As a couple, their hours of volunteerism have spanned more than a decade and
their quantity cannot be counted. Bobby was on the Athletic Association at St. Pius
X School, volunteered at both the Seton and St. Pius X parish festivals, and coached
innumerable 6-8th grade boys and girls basketball teams. Kelly has been involved with
the parish council at Seton Parish, coordinated the adoration hour committee, served
on the parish welcoming committee and takes the Eucharist to local nursing homes as
a Eucharistic Minister.
On receiving the Mary Geist Award, Bobby emphasized the impact Hartley has had
on their family. Their youngest daughter Abby is a senior at Hartley and their older
daughters Katie ‘09 and Sarah ‘11 are both alumnae.
“We feel that we have received more from Hartley than we could ever give,” Dawes said.
“This school is a very special place.”

A. Ogurchock —
affectionately known
as “Father O”— will
tell you that he has
always believed he
lives his vocation
best when he is with
students and their
families.
6
In Fr. O’s 56 years as a Diocesan priest,
he has held many positions—from parish
priest to assistant superintendent of
schools—but the appointments which
have given him the most joy, and which
he evaluates as the most successful, are
those attached to schools. As a newly
ordained priest, he was assigned to teach
at Bishop Hartley. And thus began his long
relationship with the Diocesan schools.
Fr. Ogurchock was the youngest of
four children growing up in a devoutly
Catholic family in Akron. All four of the
children responded to the call to vocations:
Margaret and Dorothy became Sisters of
St. Joseph in Cleveland, and his brother
John became a Maryknoll missionary. Fr.
O would have liked to have followed his
brother into missionary work, but as a child
it was discovered he was hearing impaired,
which eliminated consideration by the
order. He came to Columbus to study at
St. Charles Seminary, pursuing his postgraduate theology studies at Mt. St. Mary
of the West (now Athenaeum of Ohio) in
Cincinnati. At the time of his ordination
in 1958, the Diocese of Columbus was
able to assign priests as both principals
and administrators in the high schools.
Education was Fr. O’s passion and he
looked forward to working with students
and teachers.
Living at his first parish, St. Leo, Fr.
Ogurchock was assigned to teach Religion
at Hartley. Two years later, he then was
assigned to the parish of Our Lady of
Lourdes in Marysville, becoming chaplain
at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. He
was later transferred back to the east side
of Columbus, living at Holy Spirit Parish and
again assigned to staff at Bishop Hartley.
In 1965, he was transferred across town to
Bishop Ready to begin a two year principal
internship—which was cut short with a
transfer to serve as principal of the new
high school in Zanesville, Bishop Rosecrans
High School. His “second year of training
was to be ‘on the job’,” he tells us.
In Zanesville, Fr. Ogurchock’s challenge
was to lead a community that had
combined the Irish and Dominican-led
school of St. Thomas with the German and
Diocesan school into one new Diocesan
high school, Rosecrans. The nucleus of
the original school was built to hold 200
high schoolers and 400 grade school
students; there were 1,000 high schoolers
on his arrival. In the early days of his
principalship, the Ohio Department of
Education visited the school to renew its
charter and he was told to build a school
before their return in five years, or lose
the school’s charter. Fr. Ogurchock then
worked tirelessly as both principal and
chief fundraiser; he and the community
raised $1 million dollars, monies that were
matched by the Diocese. The new school
on top of the hill, with the great view
of Zanesville, and of St. Nicholas and St.
Thomas parishes, opened in 1970.
Fr. Ogurchock was then “drafted” by his
good friend, Msgr. David Sorohan, also a
well-known priest-educator, to serve as

sorely the “lack of my kids, my building,
my faculty.” Executive duties he eventually
undertook as well included serving as
the CCL “Athletic Commissioner”. He still
missed day to day work with teachers,
students and parishioners. In 1980, Fr. O left the school office to
serve as Vicar of Religious Vocations.
And then in 1981, Fr. Ogurchock was
transitioned to Mt. Carmel East Hospital as
its Priest Chaplain, a role he performed for
28 years until his “retirement” at age 75.
Fr. Ogurchock thought his experience
with female high school students was
probably not sufficient experience to
help him be successful as the chaplain at
the Ohio Reformatory for Women, but he
learned that an open heart helped him
serve the prisoners. His favorite memory of
his time there is the visit his mother made
to Marysville and the prison so she could
see first hand how her boy was “dealing
with it.”
He felt he learned “to deal” by teaming
up with the best help of others and felt he
found just that when he was made Vicar for
Religious Vocations. He enlisted Dominican
Sister Francis Gabriel to identify issues
and problems and, with her help, increase
When asked about his favorite Hartley
memory, he immediately recalls recruiting
Jack Ryan from St. Charles to teach and
coach for the Hawks. “I told Jack that
Watterson could use you, DeSales could
use you, but Hartley needs you.”
This fall, as Fr. O remembered his days
as a Hartley teacher and administrator, he
told us of the ‘60s and his early days as a
young priest and educator: He and Dr. Joe
Whitlatch, the father of Dr. Joe Whitlatch
‘67, marched the football field sidelines,
marveling that they were allowed to do so.
Now, over 50 years later, you can still see Fr.
O on the sidelines, wearing Hartley colors,
cheering the team on.
I told Jack [Ryan] that Watterson could use you,
DeSales could use you, but Hartley needs you.
Father James A. Ogurchock
on recruiting Jack Ryan from St. Charles
to teach and coach for the Hawks
Fr. Ogurchock’s life stories are told with
gentleness and humility, and also with
great wit. The son of a strong Catholic
mother and two loving sisters, Fr. O has
much respect for the gifts women bring
to the Church and society, but speaks with
humor about learning to work with them.
As a new teacher at Hartley, he
discovered that Religion classes were
gender-based; but, like much in the 60s,
change came, and he found himself for the
first time teaching classes with both boys
and girls. Fr. O claims that he never had
any discipline problems with the boys, but
he found himself flummoxed by his first
encounter with weeping girls. When he
asked for help from the administration he
was told to “learn to deal with it.”
communications between the religious
orders of sisters who served in the Diocese
and the Bishop.
In spite of these successes, Fr. Ogurchock
still muses with surprise that he was
chosen for these tasks, but anyone who has
encountered Fr. O will easily identify his
intelligence, charm, and wit as a winning
combination.
“Retired” for 5 years, Fr. O presently
resides in Gahanna, and serves both
St. Matthew Parish and the residents of
Mother Angeline McCory, and employs
his proficiency in Spanish in helping with
Christ the King’s bilingual community. But
Friday nights, he is still a Hawk, prowling
the sidelines and praying for the players’
safety and the team’s victory.

Fr. Ogurchock, inspired by his
connection to the Hawks and his strong
conviction of the importance of education
in eradicating poverty, joined the St. James
Guild, bequeathing a gift to the school
to support tuition assistance through the
Hartley Family Tree. Principal Mike Winters
describes Fr. Ogurchock as “ a long-time
supporter of Catholic education, and of
Bishop Hartley in particular, the archivist of
the Diocese, a sweet and gentle man who
has dedicated with generosity his many
and varied gifts of time, talent and treasure
to the children of our Catholic schools.”
We are proud to count Fr. Ogurchock as
a Hawk!

2014 RETIRING TEACHERS LEAVE
LEGACIES AT BISHOP HARTLEY
JUDITH HIGGINS MANLEY
Judith Higgins Manley
retired from the English
and Drama Departments
in June 2014 after almost
four decades of teaching.
Thirty-two of those years
were in the Bishop Hartley
classroom. She describes the Bishop Hartley
community as “supportive and protective”
and that Hartley’s faculty and students always
challenged and enriched her. In her retirement
since June, Judith has gone back to school,
taking advantage of OSU’s “Project 60” program.
She returns to Hartley occasionally, acting as
substitute teacher in some of the classrooms.
BOB PROKOP
Bob Prokop retired in June
2014 from his position as
School Psychologist. He
faithfully served Bishop
Hartley High School for 28
years. Bob plans to spend
retirement working out,
volunteering at Heritage Christ Church, subbing
at Bishop Hartley, and dabbling in property
buying and flipping.
MARY ANN REES
Guidance Department Chair
Mary Ann Rees retired in
June 2014 after faithfully
serving the children and
families of Bishop Hartley for
43 years, first as a Science
teacher and department
chair, and then as a guidance counselor and
head of the department. Mary Ann, known as
the Dean of Central Ohio Guidance Counselors,
was remarkable for her vast knowledge of
student services, her attention to detail, and her
professionalism. She was a role model for her
colleagues and she interacted with students,
parents with respect, candor, and grace.
Her retirement was bittersweet for both students
and staff at Hartley, who respected her concern,
dedication, and experience. Among the staff,
for whom she was a role model, Mary Ann was
famous for her ability to find something positive
to say about anybody—no matter the situation.
Retired teacher Dick Geyer joked that he wanted
Mary Ann standing at the Pearly Gates when he
died, because she, of all people, would surely
be able to frame even the worst transgressions
in a positive light: “Genghis Khan shows great
leadership skills, St. Peter, and with a little
guidance he will put them to good use.”

SAME ADDRESS, DIFFERENT LOOK: WEBSITE REDESIGNED FOR 2014-15



Bishop Hartley launched a new website this academic year and is proud and excited to introduce it to the community. A host of new features will help the
school more effectively and efficiently provide members of the Hartley family with the information they need to know. Some of the key features include:
u NEW NAVIGATION
Enroll & Retain Dynamic Students
Award Scholastic Achievement
Assist Families in Need
Users can select the category that most defines themselves to get the
relevant information. Once a person selects who they are by using the
blue rectangles in the upper left corner, another set of tabs will appear containing the information they need. For example, the Alumni &
Friends tab contains relevant staff contact information, events, alumni
association, and reunion information.
u ENHANCED HOMEPAGE
The homepage contains three new features to help users keep up to
date with just a quick look. The Parent News Board is where you will
find articles to keep you updated on school news. The Events section
provides a list of key upcoming events of interest to all families so you
can quickly get the details such as date, time and location. The What’s
New @Hartley section is a great area for us to feature new programs,
student accomplishments, and exciting changes you need to know.
u IMPROVED USER EXPERIENCE
We’ve streamlined our graphics and other large files to help users get
the information they need quickly. By simplifying some of our design
elements, the pages will load faster and users can navigate more
quickly through the various pages to get the information they need. Reflecting our on-the-go society, it will be much easier to use our
website on smart phones and tablets.
u INFORMATION ALERTS
The square tabs on the left are quick links to our most important or
timely information. We will be using this area to post time-sensitive
items such as school closings and weather alerts and frequently accessed resource centers such as Final Forms.
The Bishop Hartley administration hopes you find this new website to be a
valuable resource and visit frequently. Everyone is encouraged to visit and
learn more about the school and how every student can fit in and stand out!
If you have been thinking about making an end-of-the-year donation or are willing to consider it now, there are
many ways to support and grow the Hartley Family Tree Fund.
Checks payable to Bishop Hartley High School should be mailed to Bishop Hartley High School
Development Office, 1285 Zettler Rd., Columbus, OH 43227.
Online donations are accepted at http://www.bishop-hartley.org/make-a-gift/.
Bishop Hartley High School welcomes gifts of securities, matching gifts, gifts in kind, and planned giving.
For more information, contact Development Director Tiffiney Hatem
at 614.237.5421, ext. 10609 or [email protected].
The annual Scholars Reception is open to donors who give at least $250.
All gifts are tax-deductible by law. Bishop Hartley High School is a non-profit corporation under IRS Section 501(c)(3).

Soccer alumnae came back to challenge our current team players on Sunday, July 2, 2014. The
current players conducted a food drive for the Bishop Griffin Center and collected over 684
packages of food for needy people in our area. The alumnae players pictured are, left to right: Molly

time to connect with new parents and players and reconnect with past parents and players.
Mary Khourie Berg ‘76 has been diligently helping her husband Dave edit
his book which came out this summer. Behind the Curtain: An Insider’s Look
at Jay Leno’s Tonight Show, is a fun read, with tons of backstage humor and
happenings during Dave’s 18 years as Jay’s co-producer. It is endorsed by
Laura Bush, Bill O’Reilly, Larry the Cable Guy and more. And Jay himself
wrote the foreword. Not a trashy, Hollywood tell-all, the book takes the
high road of fun. Class of 1976 text cuts off at the end of the paragraph Mary and Dave may even make it back to Columbus for a book signing so

nation participated in the national tournament,
including debaters representing schools such
as The Ohio State University, Miami of Ohio

skills I had acquired early on, my educational background focused on helping
people, and my interest and experience in financial services to help people
plan for their financial success.” Josh lists developing relationships with new
people as one of the best parts of his job and “overcoming the misconception
that you have to have a big pile of money to work with a financial adviser” as
his largest job challenge. Josh resides in Blacklick, Ohio with his wife Jessica,

WE’VE GOT SPIRIT, YES WE DO!
The Bishop Hartley Cheerleaders have led school spirit for decades. These girls’
dedication and passion for the Hawks is evident in the team’s mission statement:
The Bishop Hartley Cheerleaders are student athletes who work together to
fulfill one common goal: through sisterhood, spirit, leadership, faith, unity,
and trust, we lead our school and strengthen the Hartley community.
Although the uniforms, poms, and cheers have changed, the staples of a
cheerleader – leadership, spirit, pride, and enthusiasm – have continued through
the decades. The cheerleaders from 1970 and our current cheerleaders are great
examples of these qualities.
