Nacional de Oración

Bajo el lema “Despierta
América” la comunidad de
San Antonio se unió espiritu­
almente al lado de pastores
religiosos y funcionarios del
gobierno municipal en la
celebración del Día Nacional
de Oración (National Day of
Prayer) en el pórtico del City
Hall en un servicio ecuménico
de alabanzas e invocación al
Altísimo.
En San Antonio se ha cele­
brado oficialmente el primer
jueves de mayo con la par­
ticipación de la autoridad
municipal desde 1986.
Al toque de las campanas a
las 12 del mediodía, un grupo
de girl scouts emplazó la ban­
dera nacional y la bandera
del estado para la entonación
del Himno Nacional, coreado
por una multitud de que desde
temprana hora llegó al lugar.
Acto seguido, Ivy Taylor,
alcaldesa de San Antonio,
presentó la proclama oficial
alusiva y, después de darle
lectura, la puso en manos de
Suzanne Dollar, coordinadora
de National Day of Prayer.
En esta oportunidad Ivy
Taylor se dirigió a la numero­
sa asistencia congregada en
la plaza del City Hall, expre­
sando la necesidad de que la
comunidad se mantenga unida

en el espíritu cristiano en esta
ciudad predestinada por Dios.
La concentración de los
fieles en la Plaza del City Hall
empezó a temprana hora, aún
antes del programa oficial,
cuando grupos de diferentes
denominaciones cristianas en­
tonaron ininterrumpidamente
alabanzas invocando la pro­
tección divina y reconociendo
a Cristo como su salvador.
La coordinadora recordó a
la audiencia que National Day
of Prayer es una celebración
oficial de una gran tradición
sancionada por ambas cá­
maras del Congreso de los
Estados Unidos.
Esta festividad de acción
de gracias arraigada desde
tiempos de la colonia en época
más reciente fue ratificada en
su legalidad por los presiden­
tes Harry S. Truman en 1952,
y, posteriormente, por los
presidentes Ronald y George
W. Bush.
La práctica actual tiene su
origen en 1771 cuando fue
decretada por el Segundo
Congreso Continental.
Posteriormente, George
Washington, en su carácter
de Comandante del Ejército
Continental, favoreció esta
costumbre para dar oportuni­
dad de meditación y descanso
a sus soldados.
El Día Nacional de Oración
se ha sobrepuesto a los em­
bates de organizaciones anti­
rreligiosas y en algunas ocasio­
nes anteriores han aparecido
pequeños grupos de protesta
durante la ceremonia de City
Hall sin que su acción cause
alguna distracción acto.
En esta oportunidad hubo
algún grupo disidente que
pasó inadvertido dado el gran
número de almas concentra­
das en City Hall.
Entre otros pastores repre­
sentantes de iglesias cristianas
asistieron Ray Jones, pastor
de Commnity Bible Church;
Soapy Dollar, director de
Bible Live Radio Program;
Gilbert Hernández, CEO de
Youth for Christ; Larry Chris­
tian, Vicario General de la
Arquidiócesis de San Antonio,
y Michael Brown de Vision
Church.
También recibió una ex­

“It’s about giving the voice
and experience from people
from across the globe who
call Texas home. It has been a
privilege to partner with Bexar
County to establish ‘Nuestra
Historia,’ and we are very
proud of everyone involved
here in this exhibit. What we
have seen is origins of making
Texas our home,” said Docog.

“Abroche o Pague” para evitar heridas, muertes y multas

“Abroche o Pague”. Es sen­
cillo, es la ley y es un recor­
datorio del Departamento
de Transporte del Estado de
Texas de que los cinturones de
seguridad salvan vidas.
“Con Memorial Day y la tem­
porada de vacaciones de ve­
rano a la vuelta de la esquina,
le urgimos a las personas a que
usen el cinturón de seguridad
siempre que se suban en un
vehículo”, dijo James Bass,
Director Ejecutivo de TxDOT.
“Toda persona en un vehículo,
ya sea que viaje en el asiento
delantero o trasero, debe usar
el cinturón. No solo es la ley,
sino que los cinturones de se­
guridad salvan vidas.”
El año pasado en Texas
hubo 2,370 choques con ocu­
pantes que no tenían puesto el
cinturón de seguridad, y esos
choques trajeron como conse­
cuencia 889 muertes y 1,854
heridos de gravedad. Abro­
charse el cinturón de seguridad
evita que los ocupantes salgan
disparados en un choque y au­
menta en un 45 por ciento las
probabilidades de sobrevivir.
En las camionetas pickup, esas
cifras brincan a 60 por ciento
porque esos vehículos tienen
el doble de probabilidades de
voltearse en un choque que los
automóviles.
La Administración Nacional
de Seguridad en las Autopistas
estima que, desde su creación,
la campaña “Abroche o Pague”
en Texas ha resultado en una
disminución de casi 4,687
choques, a la vez que ha preve­
nido más de 79,578 heridos de
gravedad. Cuando se lanzó la
campaña “Abroche o Pague” en
el 2002, solo el 76 por ciento
de los texanos se abrochaba el
cinturón de seguridad. Hoy en
día, 9 de cada 10 texanos se
abrochan el cinturón.
Junto con la campaña estatal
y tour anual para crear con­
ciencia de TxDOT “Abroche
o Pague”, los departamentos
de policía en toda la nación
van a aumentar sus esfuerzos
de cumplimiento entre el 23 de
mayo y el 5 de junio. Las leyes
de Texas exigen que todos
los que viajen en un vehículo
se abrochen el cinturón de
seguridad o se enfrentarán a
multas y costos de tribunal de
hasta $200. Los niños menores
de 8 años tienen que estar en
un asiento de seguridad para

think because they didn’t do well
in high school that they can’t go

Each semester, we serve over
20,000 students. In fact, we are
one of the largest single-campus
community colleges in the state

degree so that you can transfer
to UTSA or Texas A&M San

ingitis Vaccination, if you are
under the age of 22.
Step 4: Complete the online
“AlamoENROLL” modules.
Step 5: Take the TSI collegereadiness exam.
Step 6: Take a “refresher”
course, if required.
Step 7: Sign-up for New Stu­
dent Orientation, get advised, &
register for classes.
Step 8: Pay your bill on time.

few weeks, but our enrollment
specialists can help you along the

Paying for College
While some people think col­
lege is not for them because they
are not “smart.” Others believe
that they can’t go to college be­
cause it is too expensive.
San Antonio College is here to
serve the community, so, we are
able to provide our students an
affordable education. On aver­
age, tuition for a full-time student
is as low as $831/semester or
about $207/course.*
There is also financial assis­
tance available. In fact, more
than 54 percent of our students
receive financial aid (grants,
scholarships and educational
loans.)
Many of our students also
work while they attend school.
It is not always easy, but YOU

A special Mother’s Day wish to my 93 year old mom…

Dear Mom,
I write these words with pen
in hand and a box of tissues
nearby. When I read these
words to you in your hospital
bed, I am certain that box will
empty in record time.
Mom, I remember my first
few days of school in 1963. I
wasn’t a very good student. In
fact, you and dad were called
in for a parent/teacher confer­
ence. School officials had grave
concerns about my overall
reading skills.
They had me lined up for a
while for a bunch of testing.
Some of the tests didn’t seem
to make a whole lot of sense
to me at the time. After a few
weeks, the school called you
and dad in for a meeting. They
had the school counselor, my
first grade teacher, the school
principal—all the big shots of
the school. The school coun­
selor had the lead.
“Your son, Gabe, is a very
sweet boy” she said. “But he is
slow. He is a very slow child.
So, don’t expect much from
him,” the counselor explained.
My parents were stunned.
They began to cry.
Since this was at a private,
Catholic School, school of­
ficials tried to invoke God in
soothing my mother’s broken
heart. “But you must thank
God, for He gave you five chil­
dren—four of which are per­
fectly normal,” the counselor
said. “As for little Gabe—he
is slow—and he’ll always be
that way.”
My parents thanked the
school officials for their efforts
and drove home. They pre­
pared dinner for us children.
And in the quiet night after
we all went to bed, they wept,
silently.
This is 1963. Little was
known about learning chal­
lenges at the time. The follow­
ing week, there were changes,
both at school as well as at
home. At school, my desk was
moved to the back. At home,
my mother had her own ideas.
When I got off the school bus
and went inside, I found Big
Chief Tablets adorning the
kitchen table. There was boxes
of crayons, pencils and draw­
ing boards.
After I’d have a brief snack,
mom would hold my hand in
hers and would slowly draw
letters. She made me feel com­
fortable. After a few weeks,
these letters began to form
words—sometimes silly words.
At times, we would make up
silly songs with the words that
we were creating.
No mom—I never forgot
that experience. In fact, I can
still feel your hands on mind,
gliding it across the Big Chief
Tablets. School was always
difficult—but I had my big­
gest cheerleader—my mom.
On the night that I graduated
from high school, mom and
dad sat in the back. They hid
their tears. Undoubtedly, they
remembered the words, “Your
son will always be slow.”
A high school journalism
teacher, Chet Hunt, encour­
aged me to continue school,
so I did. I finished two years at
San Antonio College and then
transferred to The University of
Texas at Austin. It was never
easy, but quitting never entered
my mind as I recalled my mom
gliding my hand across the Big
Chief Tablet.
Midway through UT, I de­
cided to set a very high goal—
to try to attend law school. It
was incredibly difficult for me.
But quitting never entered my
mind. It was like I ran scared
all through law school—but I
would never let down my dear
old mom and her Big Chief
Tablets.
On the day that I graduated
from law school at the Univer­
sity of Texas at Austin, I saw
both of my parents in the back
Heritage Plaque unveiled at West End Park
of the room weeping profusely.
On the day that I was sworn
in as an attorney – they cried.
When I argued my first case
in the Fifth Circuit Court of
Appeals in New Orleans—they
cried. When I was my first case
that I litigated in the United
States Supreme Court—they
cried.
But now, my tears are for
you, mom. Two years ago, my
mom suffered a massive stroke.
She lost her ability to speak
or to swallow. Since then, I
became an activist for senior
citizens and the disabled. May­
be that is what God intended
all along. I ponder this. But I
admit—I’m a little slow.
My mother saved my life
when she taught me to read.
And when mom suffered her
stroke, after the insurance
company tried to cut off her
benefits, they didn’t know that
the 91 year old woman curled
underneath the blankets was
being guarded by a son who
had 30 years of litigation expe­
rience in both state and federal
court dealing with them.
Yes, Mom—you saved my
life by teaching me to read. I
saved yours by reading federal
cases day and night at your
bedside.

Comentarios... Muertos y el mal humor en México
En Méxi­
co la suspi­
cacia y la
desconfian­
za son enfer­

Gerardo Andrés Jiménez,
mesero de 33 años del restau­
rante Tamales Licha en la zona
turística de Acapulco, estaba
a punto de llevarle unas en­
chiladas a uno de sus clientes
cuando, de pronto, una bala
perdida le atravesó el corazón
y lo mató, según informó el
diario Reforma.
Horas después de las bala­
ceras en Acapulco, que ter­
minaron con la vida de este
mesero y obligaron al cierre
temporal de 3,800 estableci­
mientos comerciales y unas
100 escuelas el presidente de
México, Enrique Peña Nieto,
se preguntaba públicamente
por qué hay tantos mexicanos
que están de mal humor. Bue­
no, déjeme explicarle por qué.
Se dice que no hay buen hu­
mor, que el ánimo está caído,
que hay mal ambiente, un
mal humor social, se quejaba
Peña Nieto en la apertura del
Tianguis Turístico en Guada­
lajara. Mientras, a su lado,
una niña mazahua bostezaba
y se tapaba los ojos. Esa niña
es México, observó con agu­
deza el periodista Javier Risco
en Twitter (@jrisco). Y tiene
razón.
A veces parecería que el
presidente no sabe lo que está
pasando o hace como que
no sabe. Por ejemplo, está
promoviendo una campaña
turística — “Viajemos Todos
Por México” en medio de una
constante violencia e impuni­
dad en el país. A mí también
me encanta vacacionar en
México y lo hago muy seguido.
Pero hay zonas de Guerrero y
Jalisco, por citar dos casos, a
donde los mismos lugareños
me han advertido que ni ellos
se atreven a ir.
Peña Nieto está desconecta­
do de la realidad del país.
Los Pinos es su guarida verde
donde le pintan todo color de
rosa. Oigámoslo: Hay muchas
razones, muchos argumentos
para decir que México está
avanzando, que México está
creciendo en distintos ámbi­
tos. Es cierto, pero no en el
sentido que él quisiera: México
está creciendo en el número de
asesinatos, de secuestros y en
casos de impunidad.
Aquí están las cifras oficia­
les:
En México han asesinado
a 57,194 personas (homici­
dios dolosos) y secuestrado a
4,506 desde que Peña Nieto
llegó al poder el 1 de diciem­
bre del 2012 hasta el pasado
31 de marzo de este 2016.
De seguir así, el sexenio de
Peña Nieto podría ser incluso
más violento que el de Felipe
Calderón en el que murieron
104,089 personas. (Aquí pue­
den ver las cifras de la propia
Secretaría de Gobernación
bit.ly/1KTkyif) Que te maten
o te secuestren a un familiar
te pone de malas el resto de
tu vida.
El caso Ayotzinapa tam­
poco le sube los ánimos a
nadie. Demuestra lo peor del
gobierno de Peña Nieto. Por
alguna extraña razón, Peña
Nieto decidió ponerse del
lado de los opresores y no
de las víctimas. Nunca ha ido
a Ayotzinapa y, en lugar de
abrazar a los padres de los 43
estudiantes desaparecidos, los
ha vuelto sus enemigos. En vez
de explorar exactamente qué
pasó, su gobierno obstruyó
la investigación de expertos
internacionales, les prohibió
hablar con los militares acusa­
dos, torturó a detenidos y se
inventó una verdad histórica.
Peña Nieto, tristemente, ve el
asunto de Ayotzinapa como
un problema de relaciones
públicas, no de derechos hu­
manos y de justicia.
Si uno de mis hijos fuera
de los 43 desaparecidos de
Ayotzinapa o hubiera sido
secuestrado o formara parte
de esas terroríficas estadísticas
oficiales, yo también estaría de
muy mal humor. Pero el presi­
dente no lo puede ver. Cree,
ilusamente, que lo criticamos
porque alguien nos paga o por
consigna ideológica. No; lo
criticamos por incompetente.
La percepción de muchos
mexicanos es que estamos
peor que en el 2012; el 66 por
ciento tiene una opinión nega­
tiva de su presidencia, según la
última encuesta de Reforma.
El presente mal humor so­
cial, como lo llama el presi­
dente, no es solo por el estrepi­
toso fracaso en su lucha contra
el crimen. También es por la
corrupción que viene desde la
Casa Blanca mexicana, por la
devaluación del peso, porque
no se crean suficientes buenos
trabajos y porque sus políticos
no asumen responsabilidad de
casi nada. Muchos mexicanos
están hartos.
Peña Nieto presumió en
el Tianguis Turístico que la
película “Spectre” de James

Just a Thought: Today is Mother’s Day
Today we
celebrate
Mother’s
Day. It is the
day we honor
our mothers
and mother­
Steve Walker h o o d , m a ­
ternal bonds
and the influence of mothers
in society. It is celebrated on
various days in many parts of
the world, most commonly in
spring in April or May.
Here in the United States it is
designated as the second Sun­
day in May which turns out to
be May 8 this year. Last year,
it fell on May 10.
The modern holiday of Moth­
er’s Day was first celebrated in
1908, when a woman named
Anna Jarvis held a memorial for
her mother in Grafton, West
Virginia. She then began a
campaign to make “Mother’s
Day” a recognized holiday in
the United States.
It took until 1914 when
President Woodrow Wilson
signed a proclamation naming
the second Sunday of May as
a day for “public expression of
our love and reverence for the
mothers of our country.” This
year, we celebrate the 102th
anniversary of Mother’s Day
in the U.S.
When we think of the sacri­
fice of our mothers, who have
nurtured us all through our life,
we can’t help but be thankful to
them and for them.
Look at many of our suc­
cessful leaders in San Antonio
who have been significantly
influenced and guided by their
mothers. When you think of
former Mayor and now HUD
Secretary Julián Castro and
Congressman Joaquin Castro,
you immediately think of their
success and how the influence
that their mother Rosie Castro
has made a difference in their
lives.
Both are graduates of Har­
vard Law School and Stanford
University. Rosie herself is well
educated and making a differ­
ence in the community on her
own as a community activist
and college instructor with a
master’s degree.
Currently Rosie’s son Julián
is being considered on the short
list of possible Vice President
Nominees by former Secretary
of Hilary Clinton should she
receive the Democratic nomina­
tion for this year’s presidential
election. That would be a great
belated Mother’s Day gift for
Rosie to be the mother of a U.S.
vice president!
Then we have mother Mil­
lie Duran, the founder of La
Prensa Education Foundation
which has raised millions of
dollars for scholarships. Millie
is the wife of La Prensa Pub­
lisher Tino Duran and mother
to sons David, Steve, and Tino
Jr., plus two daughters Barbara
and Nina Duran. Nina (also a
mother) now has taken over the
reins of La Prensa to take the
paper into a different direction.
According to history, Jarvis
the founder of “Mother’s Day”
became very disappointed with
its commercialization by the
1920s. Her mission was to
honor her mother with an
official Mother’s Day, not
commercialize it in her words.
Obviously it became so popular
it was eventually adopted by
numerous other countries and
is now celebrated all over the
world.
In Mexico, for example, the
government of Alvaro Obregon
imported the Mother’s Day
holiday from the U.S. in 1922
marking May 10 every year as
Mother’s Day, with the newspa­
per Excelsior holding a massive
promotional campaign for the
holiday that year.
In this tradition, in the early
1920s, Hallmark Cards be­
gan creating and producing
Mother’s Day cards so each
person could offer a gift, card
or remembrance toward their
mothers, grandmothers and/or
maternal figure on that special
Mother’s Day.
We have come a long way in
100 years celebrating Mother’s
Day. Just a suggestion would be
to give your mother a “Happy
Mother’s Day” card if you
haven’t already and perhaps
take her out to dinner to a nice
restaurant.

Blanca no va a ser nada fácil
para el equipo de Hillary Clin­
ton y los demócratas. Sería un
gran error subestimar a Donald
Trump; a su saña, sus insultos,
su desdén, sus mentiras y su
personalidad manipuladora.
Si Hillary Clinton quiere lle­
gar a la Casa Blanca tiene que
ser tan astuta como una zorra
de la pradera y tan fuerte como
una tigresa de Bengala.
Como se ha comprobado
a lo largo de su trayectoria
empresarial y recientemente
durante su campaña política,
Trump es una persona con po­
cos escrúpulos. Solo le interesa
ganar, salirse con la suya. No le
importa si, en el proceso de ob­
tener sus objetivos, hace daño
a la gente, a los niños, a las
mujeres, a los discapacitados y
a personas de la tercera edad.
Si se trata de insultar para
ganar puntos, Trump lo va a
hacer públicamente las veces
que quiera y ante los medios
de comunicación. En su mundo
paranoico, no hay una persona
ubicada más arriba de su si­
llón almidonado. Al único que
hace caso es a sí mismo. Es el
hombre más engolosinado con
su persona; es un verdadero
egomaniaco.
Por consiguiente, Trump va
a insultar a Hillary Clinton. Ya
la ha llamado “transa” varias
veces. La va a etiquetar con
este nombre en todo momento
para tratar de darle una ima­
gen negativa con el electorado
nacional. También la llamará
‘mujer débil’, ‘sin carácter’,
‘sumisa’, ‘embustera’, ‘fracasa­
da’, ‘engañada por tu esposo’ e
incluso hará uso de disparates
ofensivos que solo caben en la
boca de la gente ignorante y
aquellos que ahondan su desdi­
cha en los tugurios de la noche.
Por favor, señora Clinton,
nunca se irrite cuando la ofen­
da. No le muestre los colmillos
en frente de la gente, como lo
hicieron los ex gobernadores
Bobby Jindal (Louisiana) y Rick
Perry (Texas); tampoco trate de
darle un zarpazo frente a las
cámaras de televisión, como
recientemente lo hizo el sena­
dor Ted Cruz. No creo que le
conviene que se una a su juego
sucio, como lo hizo Marco
Rubio. No le recomiendo que
ignore totalmente su compor­
tamiento falaz, como lo hizo
John Kasich. A todos estos
candidatos, estos errores, les
costó el sueño de llegar a la
Casa Blanca.
En casa de lobos salvajes
como Trump, lo mejor es ac­
tuar con astucia, serenidad e
inteligencia. Cuando sea nece­
sario utilizar la fuerza, usted
va a tener la dicha de darle un
zarpazo, del mismo modo que
lo hace una Tigresa de Bengala
cuando enfrenta a un cocodrilo
desdichado. El golpe tiene que
venir por detrás, por la nuca,
cuando menos lo espera y cu­
ando más daño le haga.
En los debates presidenciales
mantenga la compostura. A
nosotros, a los demócratas, a
una gran parte del electorado
independiente y muchos re­
publicanos, no nos interesa
escuchar bufonerías e insultos.
Queremos que nuestros lí­
deres no muestren el camino del
desarrollo económico. ¿Cómo
es que vamos mejorar las bases
industriales? Queremos que
nos explique a detalle cómo
es que vamos a mantener en
nuestro país todas esas empre­
sas que intentan reubicarse en
el extranjero. Háblanos de tus
planes de contra el terrorismo,
de migración y de los derechos
de la mujer.
Uno de los grandes recursos
de Trump ha sido dominar a
sus contrincantes a través del
uso de los medios de comuni­
cación. No puedes dejar que
te gane y aparezca todos los
días en la televisión. Tienes
que hacer todo lo posible para
estar al frente de los programas
radiales, de la televisión, el in­
ternet, los tweets, etc. Róbale
los espacios mediático y verás
que poco a poco le quitas su
arrogancia.
Sin melena, Sansón perdió
toda su fuerza. Sin los medios
de comunicación, Trump no es
más que un pequeño monigote
hollywoodense. A nosotros esa
gente nos gusta para entretener­
nos y no para guiarnos ante el
mundo. Suerte; un admirador
tuyo.

PEDRO FRIEDEBERG: PRAISE OF FOLLY— Ruiz-Healy
Art is pleased to present “Pedro Friedeberg: Praise of Folly.”

woven carpets, paintings, his iconic hand-chairs, fantastical

essay by Dan Cameron. One of the master illusionists of late
20th century art, Pedro Friedeberg is enjoying something of
a resurgent moment in the second decade of the 21st century.
Ever since the 2009 retrospective of his work at the Palacio de
Bellas Artes in Mexico City coincided one year later with the
definitive critical study on him, authored by James Oles, there
has been a noticeable uptick in international critical, collector

LINDA PACE FOUNDATION PRESENTS: RIVANE
NEUENSCHWANDER-SECONDARY STORIES — This
spring, the Linda Pace Foundation presents the Texas debut
of “Secondary Stories,” a room-sized installation by Brazilian
artist Rivane Neuenschwander. Neuenschwander has become
widely regarded for her often ephemeral work that explores
narratives about language, nature, social interactions and
the passing of time. In addition to showcasing “Secondary
Stories,” there will also be three video installation works at
SPACE, the public gallery of the Linda Pace Foundation. The

BHARATANATYAM: CLASSICAL INDIAN DANCE—
Bharathanatyam is among the most subtle and sophisticated

La cura de adicciones es responsabilidad de todos

Mis estimados tres lectores,
aunque ustedes no lo crean,
pero he llegado al punto de
convocar por este medio in­
formativo (Sección de Salud)
a la comunidad en general
para que de una vez por todas
estemos alertas detectando
quienes padecen de adicciones
y, delicadamente, brindarles
ayuda antes de que sea de­
masiado tarde.
En este testimonio seré claro
sobre la importancia de la re­
sponsabilidad que todos tene­
mos para brindarle ayuda a
personas que pasan por malos
momentos, ya sea por sus adic­
ciones a drogas legales o ile­
gales. Así como por productos
alimenticios y bebidas que se
han dedicado a consumir por
largo tiempo sin medida.
Las adicciones han evolu­
cionado con el paso de los
años, por lo que para nadie es
raro ver quienes se encuentran
sumidos en la adicción de
drogas recetadas legalmente.
Por igual drogas de consumo
ilegal, las cuales cobran alre­
dedor de más de diez vidas
por día en la nación, lo que
también deja un gran número
de drogadictos lesionados
físicamente (a quienes si se
les presta ayuda inmediata
pueden recobrarse mediante
programas en la cura de adic­
ciones).
La idea de escribir este tes­
tamento me nació durante el
pasado viernes 22 de abril,
fecha que nuestra editora en
jefe Nina Durán nos concedió
para descansar por motivo del
tradicional desfile Battle of the
Flowers Parade 2016.
En las horas que dediqué a
observar segmentos noticiosos
en los diversos canales dedica­
dos a generar noticias sobre
los acontecimientos del día
a nivel nacional, dos de ellos
repetían el sorpresivo deceso
del cantautor Prince. En otro
canal de menor audiencia se
reportaba la secuela de arte­
ros asesinatos sucedidos en
un sector rural del estado de
Ohio.
La muerte de Prince apun­
taba a diversas especulaciones.
Las autoridades que se abo­
caron a realizar las primeras
investigaciones no daban
datos precisos, citando que
sería el alguacil quien en las
próximas horas y días daría
mayores datos ante los me­
dios.
Por el lado de los asesinatos
de ocho personas, las autori­
dades indicaban su desconcier­
to por no tener pista alguna de
quienes fueron los gatilleros
o pistolero, que con toda la
calma del mundo dio muerte
a mansalva a ocho personas
que al parecer tenían lazos
familiares; indicando que él
o los asesinos respetaron las
vidas de pequeños, entre ellos
un bebé recién nacido.
Días después tras las in­
vestigaciones en la matanza
rural, autoridades dieron a
conocer que en ese sector se
encontraron cultivos de plan­
tas al parecer de marihuana.
Realizando conexiones con el
crimen organizado, pero sin
tener todavía datos precisos
sobre los sospechosos causan­
tes de darle muerte a ocho
personas, que de acuerdo a
un pastor religioso todos ellos
eran de conducta intachable.
Total que el viernes 22 de
abril, mientras aquí en nuestra
cada día visitada y bella región
de El Álamo disfrutábamos
de un día de asueto y de los
atractivos de Fiesta San Anto­
nio, por aquellas regiones del
estado de Minnesota donde
falleció Prince y Ohio, donde
por azares del destino la comu­
nidad rural quedó enlutada,
fueron la nota amarilla que
conmocionó a la nación.
Su servidor por ser alcohóli­
co en recuperación y por ex­
periencias vividas ha logrado
ser testigo de ver a drogadictos
recuperarse y reintegrarse a
la familia y sociedad. Por ser
uno de ellos, que contó con
la ayuda del sector judicial y
familiar, puedo una vez más
agradecerles su respectivo
apoyo, de no haber sido así,
otro hubiera sido mi paradero,
ya fuese en la cárcel o en la
tumba.
Creo que si al famoso can­
tautor Prince su familia y
quienes administraron su bri­
llante carrera en la industria
del entretenimiento lo hubie­
ran ayudado en cualesquier
que fuese su problema, aún
lo tuviéramos en el mundo de
los vivos.
Entre las especulaciones
sobre su inesperado falleci­
miento se ha dicho que con­
sumía fármacos para controlar
dolores corporales. Un amigo
cercano a Prince, afirmó que él
occiso no tenía problemas de
drogadicción. “Prince era vege­
tariano y no tenía adicciones”,
dijo el amigo del creador del
éxito musical “Purple Rain”.
De acuerdo al alguacil en
cargo de la investigación de
Prince, se descartó por lo
pronto que su muerte fuese
causada por sobredosis de en­
ervantes. Indicando que será el
médico legista quien en un par
de semanas proporcione los
resultados de toxicología que
determine legalmente la causa
del deceso de Prince.
Les diré a mis tres lectores
que las adicciones (del consu­
mo de drogas legales e ilegales)
no respetan raza, religión o
posición social.
Nuestra misión como seres
humanos es darle la mano a
quienes se encuentren pasando
por malos momentos, adiccio­
nes destruyen familias enteras.
Si se le brinda ayuda al adic­
to estaremos cumpliendo con
nuestra conciencia y a la vez
evitar percances que lamentar.
Que Dios acoja en su santo
reino a Prince y a las ocho per­
sonas que lamentablemente no
lograron ver la luz del día del
viernes 22 de abril.

CTRC, School of Medicine leaders respond
to FDA decision to regulate e-cigarettes

The action on May 5 by the
U.S. Food and Drug Admin­
istration (FDA) to regulate
e-cigarettes and vaping in the
same way as cigarettes and
smokeless tobacco is “a wel­
come step toward reducing the
nation’s cancer burden,” said
Ian M. Thompson Jr., M.D.,
director of the Cancer Therapy
& Research Center (CTRC) at
The University of Texas Health
Science Center at San Antonio.
The CTRC is one of the state’s
four NCI-designated Cancer
Centers.
E-cigarettes and vaping are
trendy and tempting to young
people and may be a gateway
to traditional cigarettes, which
include cancer-causing tar and
chemicals, and a lifetime of
nicotine addiction. “If you get a
young person used to inhaling
smoke, it doesn’t take a rocket
scientist to predict that they are
at higher risk to start smoking
with tobacco products,” Dr.
Thompson said.
In Thursday’s action, the
FDA said it would ban e-ciga­
rette sales to Americans under
18.
“This ruling makes it harder
for children to gain access
to e-cigarettes and dramati­
cally prevents and decreases
e-cigarette-related toxic effects
and cancer risks,” said CTRC
oncologist Anand Karnad,
M.D., professor of medicine
and chief of the Division of
Hematology-Oncology in the
School of Medicine. “Hookah
bars proliferate and teens and
young adults are increasingly
attracted to such places under
the mistaken impression that
looking ‘cool’ while inhaling
allegedly ‘harmless’ smoke is a
great pastime. Wrong! Tobacco
kills.”
“With smoking vapors that
are inhaled, it is unclear exactly
what the most harmful compo­
nents are,” said Steven R. Bailey,
M.D., professor and chief of
the Janey and Dolph Briscoe
Division of Cardiology at the
Health Science Center. “While
I recognize that some of the tars
and components are not there,
we haven’t studied well enough
the ones that are there and their
impact on the body, including
the heart. It is certainly possible
that these products have many
of the same effects on atheroscle­
rosis [hardening of the arteries]
that traditional cigarettes have,
and until they are better studied,
it’s reasonable to limit access to
e-cigarettes.”
Public health experts have
argued whether e-cigarettes and
vaping, which became available
about 10 years ago, are a way
to help people stop smoking or
are a gateway to conventional
cigarettes. Dr. Karnad said the
latter is true and applauded the
FDA’s action.
“Smoking anything is bad,”
he said. “Effective and sustained
programs to stop childhood
and teen smoking will have an
even more profound impact on
reducing cancer-related mor­
tality and morbidity than the
next new drug on the market
to treat cancer. Prevention is
much more effective than cure
in reducing morbidity and
mortality.”
Smoking is associated with
cancer, heart disease, stroke,
asthma and premature death.
“This is a great day for the
health of the nation, and we
need more actions like this
from a health standpoint to
reduce the cancer burden,” Dr.
Thompson said.
“A sustained effort to end
the scourge of tobacco-related
related cancers is the single most
important aspect of decreas­
ing cancer-related deaths,” Dr.
Karnad said. “Such efforts are
equivalent to the ‘moonshot’
efforts to end cancer being pro­
posed, and must be an essential
elements of a global cancer
control program.”

run day in
the TML
Bobcats took the victory over
the Highsox last Sunday morning.
With a close game in the fourth,
the Bobcats led 2-1 while the High­
sox pitching seamed exhausted.
Shortly after a pitching change and
two runners on, Conner Rowe hit
a line drive shot over the left center
field fence.
Rowe was born in Dallas. From
the age of four, he played little
league and select baseball. He
relocated to Georgetown and
graduated high school in 2007. He
attended the University of Texas at
Austin and majored in education.
He was a full starter during his
junior and sophomore year. In
2009, he hit the walk off home
run to send Texas to the National
Championship Series. Shortly after
his walk off, he was drafted by the
Washington Nationals.
Coaches and teammates say
that Rowe is a great person and
an outstanding ball player. Players
like this keep Tex Mex IBL with
its reputation of competitiveness. I
recommend you YouTube Rowe’s
home run vs. LSU – it gives me
chills every time I watch it.
The Bobcats did not stop there,
scoring a total of five runs during
the inning. Going to their last
at bat, Highsox went with the
mentality of trying to rally. Lupe
Ortega led off the inning with a
home run over the center fielders
head. Highsox threatened, but the
Bobcats shut the door to any more
scoring. Game one’s final score was
Bobcats 7 and Highsox 2. Winning
pitcher for the Bobcats was Sammy
De Leon; Rowe’s home run was his
second this season.
Game two of the day was a
tighter matchup that came down to
the wire. Gustavo Torres’ Tecolotes
faced Gabriel Cardenas’ Texas Jug­
gernauts. Tecolotes jumped to a 2-0
lead after one inning. It did not take
long before the Juggernauts tied the
game 2-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, the
Juggernauts were leading 5-4. With
a runner on, Arnold Ponce hit his
league leading fourth home run of
the season. In back to back fashion,
Javier Arrieta was not going to be
left behind, hitting his second home
run of the day and tying Ponce
with the league lead. Final score for
the contest was 7 to 5 Tecolotes.
The winning pitcher was Keith
Vasquez.
It was a record home run day
in the Tex Mex League. The bats
caught fire for the Dodgers in game
three of the day. Pictured below
are the Dodgers players who hit
the long ball. Keep in mind that
the guys are out of uniform as the
picture was taken after the game.

host a home run derby fundraiser.

run hitters. The doors will be open
to the public. If you have always
wondered if you could hit one over

have some fun and help raise funds
for our Labor Day Tournament on
Sept. 3 and 4. Teams from Mexico
and Dallas are expected to join.

Miami Heat announced in a joint statement
Wednesday, due to health issues. Accord­
ing to reports, the medical team has been
working together throughout this process
and will return Bosh to playing basketball
as soon as possible.
Johnny Manziel makes
first court appearance
Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny
Manziel made an appearance in court on
Thursday and was told by a judge in the Dal­
las County Criminal Court to have no contact
whatsoever with former girlfriend Colleen
Crowley. No plea was entered, but defense
attorney Robert Hinton says Manziel plans to
plead not guilty.

el FedEx Forum de la ciudad
de Memphis, Tennessee, los
capitaneados por el alero titu­
lar Tim Duncan y el guardia
francés Tony Parker cerraron
con éxito la serie ganando el
tercero y cuarto partido.
Spurs en su retorno a casa
siguieron sus contundentes en­
trenamientos concentrándose
en la ofensiva y defensiva, ya
que su siguiente serie sería

el Thunder de Oklahoma City
(OKC) que se clasificó en el

couple of guys getting cramps
towards the end, and that
crowd just lifted them those last
ten minutes. The crowd helps
them do that.”
San Antonio FC earned three
important points at home after
recording a tie and two losses in
their last three away matches.
The team will look to continue
their winning streak at home
on Saturday, May 7 when they
host Rio Grande Valley FC at
Toyota Field. The match will
be the first encounter between
the South Texas rivals.

‘United Tastes’ brings together
authentic Lone Star State recipes

There are many recipes
that are enjoyable to prepare
and delicious to eat. Thanks
to one cookbook, you will
not only be entertained while
you read, but you will learn
that Texas recipes extend
from your grandmother’s
kitchen.
“United Tastes of Texas:
Authentic Recipes from Corners of the Lone Star State,”
written by Jessica Dupuy, a
freelance writer and author,
published her book in February of this year and is ready
for many to see the hard
work she put into the recipes
that made the cut – all 150
of them.
A fourth generation Texan,
Dupuy wanted to give readers a cookbook that went
into more depth of popular
foods from all over Texas
and not just one fixed place.
At first, Dupuy’s publisher
wanted more of a Tex-Mex
cookbook to define what
the state has to offer. For
Dupuy, however, it was more
important to compile a book
of recipes that extended all
around the state of Texas.
“I suggested that instead
of approaching it like a cuisine, that we look at it from
the idea of how Texas was
settled over time, the different areas, the flavors and
the culinary culture that we
have in different parts of the
state,” Dupuy told La Prensa.
“Clearly, the state has to have
different ways of eating depending on what part of the
state you are in, so then it
went into dividing the state
into regions and really taking
a look at what the regions
represent in terms of flavors
and natural ingredients.”
Dupuy decided to divide
the book into three regions
and dedicate one region for
those interested in cooking a
holiday, the Texan way.
The Coastal Texas region
offers: Ceviche; Longhorn
Green Salad; Crispy Popcorn
Shrimp with Buttered Corn
Dipping Sauce; Texas Gulf
Fish Tacos; Grilled Redfish with Cilantro-Serrano
Chimichurri; Andouille Sausage and Smoked Chicken
Gumbo; Slow-Burn Bolognese; Texas Strip Steaks and
Tequila Lime Pie.
The South Texas region
offers: The Original Nacho;
Salsa Five Ways; Migas;
Grapefruit, Avocado and
Butter Lettuce Salad; Smoked
Chicken Tortilla Soup; Pork
Carnitas; King Ranch Chicken and San Antonio Puffy Tacos. As for dessert, there are
recipes such as Amigo Pie,
Pecan Pralines, Coconut Flan
and Cinnamon Ice Cream.
In West Texas, you will
find recipes for appetizers,
such as Texas Caviar and
Rajas Con Queso, and entrees
including Huevos Rancheros; West Texas Chili; Pork
and Black Bean “Stew;” Red
Chile Pork Posole; Smoked
Chicken; Perini Ranch Laredo Boil; Carne Guisada;
Adobo Grilled Beef Rib Eyes
and Buttermilk Biscuits. For
dessert, there is Apple Cake
Cobbler and Mexican Wedding Cookies.
In the final section of the
book, Dupuy talks about
Texas Shindigs, Texasthemed menus for Cinco
de Mayo, Fourth of July,
Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Once the book was complete,
Dupuy was able to learn
many things including the
importance to have the Lone
Star State recognized as one
of the best states to have an
authentic cuisine.

joven para escribir una autobiografía. Pero con todo
lo que le ha tocado vivir a
la actriz estadounidense, de
padres colombianos, Diane
Guerrero, los 29 capítulos de
sus memorias son toda una
vida que casi acaba, pero que
volvió a comenzar.
La actriz, que encarna a la
presidiaria Maritza en la premiada serie de Netflix “Orange
is The New Black” o a la mejor
amiga de Jane en también serie
“Jane the Virgen”, anuncia en
el prefacio una idea que puede
parecer al principio negativa
para un lector: “Mi historia es
desgarradoramente común”.
¿Entonces, por qué leerla?
Porque así como a ella le tocó
vivir a los 14 años en el año
2000 la desintegración de su
familia cuando sus padres,
inmigrantes indocumentados
de origen colombiano, fueron
deportados, así le ha sucedido
y sigue sucediendo a miles
de niños en los últimos años
debido al aumento de las deportaciones.
La diferencia es que Diane Guerrero es ahora una
actriz bastante conocida que
ha utilizado las plataformas
mediáticas para, con su historia, ejemplificar el enorme
impacto emocional que causa
en un niño o joven la desintegración familiar debido al
actual sistema migratorio. El
resto de historias reales de día
a día casi siempre se quedan
en números y estadísticas.
Escrito en conjunto con
Michelle Burford (editora
fundadora de O, The Oprah
Magazine), la autobiografía
de Guerrero titulada “En el
país que amamos (Mi familia
dividida)” está escrita de forma

en los Estados Unidos, queda
huérfana y sola, a merced de
la bondad de sus vecinos y
amigos para sobrevivir en el
único país que conoce. Pero su
relato no es necesariamente de
estoicismo ante la situación,
ella admite –a lo largo de las
páginas– que se derrumbó
muchas veces y que estuvo,
literalmente, al borde.
Cronológicamente, la autora va contando la razón
económica por la cual sus
padres migraron indocumentados de Colombia a Estados
Unidos; cómo logran radicarse en Boston, cómo sacan
adelante a la familia mediante dos o más trabajos mal
pagados y cómo el miedo a la
deportación les hace integrar,
incluso a ella misma, la idea
que para sobrevivir hay que
vivir en las sombras.
Miedo, frustración, baja autoestima, depresión, alegrías
y redención son algunas de
las profundas emociones que
Diane Guerrero narra.

Silvina “Chivis” (Rodríguez)
es una mujer adinerada que

en donde conocerá a Manuel
(Ponce), un vendedor de pescado a quien le desagrada
mucho la gente de sociedad.

retroceder en el tiempo, que
las cosas no tengan sentido y
conocer a los personajes más
locos? ¡Ay! Pues (entre varias
opciones)... el mundo de “Alicia a través del Espejo” (Alice
Through the Looking Glass),
la nueva película que Disney
Studios estrenará el viernes 27
de mayo.
Con el mismo elenco de su
predecesora “Alice in Wonderland” (2010): Mia Wasikowska
como Alicia, Johnny Depp como
el Sombrerero Loco, Helena
Bonham Carter como la Reina
Roja, Anne Hathaway como
Mirana, esta secuela será dirigida
por James Robin y producida
por Tim Burton.
Basada en la historia homónima de Lewis Carroll, el guion
para esta película fue escrito por
Linda Woolverton.
La película respeta la iconografía de la producción de Burton, utiliza personajes reales de
la historia de Carrol y se da
ciertas libertades creativas para
crear su propio cuento.
“Alice Kingsleight ha pasado
los años siguiendo los pasos de
su padre y navegando por los
mares. A su regreso a Londres
atraviesa un espejo mágico y
regresa al reino fantástico de
‘Underland’ de sus amigos, el
Conejo Blanco (voz de Michael
Shenn), Absolem La oruga (Alan
Rickman), el Gato de Cheshire
(Stephen Fry) y el Sombrerero
Loco (Johhny Depp), quien no
es ya él mismo. El Sombrerero
ha perdido su esencia, por lo
que Mirana (Anne Hathaway)
envía a Alicia en una cruzada
para prestar la Cronosfera, un
globo metálico situado dentro
de la cámara del Gran Reloj que
controla El Tiempo. Al regresar
al pasado, se encuentra a sus
amigos y enemigos, en diferentes
momentos de sus vidas, y se embarca en una peligrosa carrera
para salvar al Sombrerero antes
que se acabe el tiempo”, sintetiza
Disney sobre su historia.
Tiempo villano
En los trailers de la película,
se aprecia que en ella aparecen
los clásicos personajes de “Ali-

Hatter), más loco, más raro y más problemático que nunca
en “Alice through the Looking Glass” de Disney este mes.

cia a través del Espejo” como
las piezas de ajedrez, Humpy
Dumpy, la Reina Roja, el Gato
de Cheshire, el Conejo Blanco
y otros.
Pero también introduce nuevos personajes. Uno de ellos
es El Tiempo, una criatura
mitad humano mitad reloj, interpretada por el actor inglés
Sasha Baron Cohen (el mismo
de Borat, y quien continúa en la
línea de personajes fantásticos al
estilo “Hugo”).
El director James Robin explicó a la revista Entertainment
Weekly en abril de este año de
dónde vino la idea de El Tiempo
como personaje y villano.
“En realidad fue idea de Lewis
Carroll”, dijo Robins.
Cuando Alicia conoce por
primera vez al Sombrerero, este
dice que ha estado atrapado en
la merienda del te desde marzo.
“Si conocieras al Tiempo tan
bien como lo conozco yo –dijo
el Sombrero–, no hablarías de
matarlo. ¡El Tiempo es todo un
personaje!”, dice el Sombrerero
en el capítulo “Una merienda de
locos” (A Mad Tea Party) en “Las
aventuras de Alicia en el País de
las Maravillas”.
Y continúa contándole que a
raíz de un problema durante un
concierto que ofreció la Reina
de Corazones donde él cantó y
la Reina le amenazó con cortarle
la cabeza por estar “matando
el tiempo”. El Tiempo se enojó
con él porque pensó que quería
matarlo y desde entonces lo dejó
varado en marzo.
Basándose en esto, el personaje de El Tiempo de Disney es
un déspota solitario que vive
solo en un castillo oscuro que
asemeja a las entrañas de un
viejo reloj victoriano.
Los únicos amigos que tiene
son relojitos de vapor (sus sirvientes), los Segundos. Cuando
El Tiempo está en peligro los Segundos se unen para convertirse
en tropas de Minutos.
Otro personaje nuevo que
“Alice Through the Looking
Glass” presenta es Zanik Hightop, interpretado por Rhys Ifans,
quien será el padre del Sombrerero Loco.
En cuanto a la banda sonora,
al menos unos de los trailers
incluye una nueva versión de
“White Rabbit”, el tema psicodélico de Jefferson Airplane de
los años sesenta.
Además, el tema principal de
la película será “Just like Fire” a
cargo de Pink.
Pink presentará este tema en
la ceremonia de los Billboard
Music Awards 2016 el próximo
22 a las 8:00 p.m. ET en la cadena ABC. Por primera vez el
show será transmitido en vivo en
la Costa Oeste a las 5:00 p.m.
Alamo Beer Company brings
in spring with Maibock

When Alamo Beer Company
opened to the public in March
of 2015, the brewery added
three new beers to its portfolio including its first seasonal,
ALAMO Maibock.
Initially, ALAMO Maibock
was served only on draft at the
brewery, until now. During
the first week of May, Alamo
will be releasing Maibock
throughout Texas in both
bottles and draft. The beer
is expected to be available in
bars, restaurants and retailers.
A cross between a traditional
bock and a Munich Helles also
known as a Festbier, Maibocks
are brewed as a means of transition between the winter and
summer seasons. As the name
Mai suggests, the best time to
drink this German-style brew
is in the month of May.
“This is one of my favorite
beers to make,” states Brewmaster James Hudec. “It takes
such care and time. You brew
it in the winter when the snow
is still on the, um, cactus…
then you let it sleep for a few
months in a cold lager room
until it reaches amber perfection,” Hudec concludes. In
comparison, Texas winters are
significantly milder than those
of Bavaria; however the profile
of the beer is true to its origins.
Made with Pilsner and Munich malts plus Herzrbucker
hops, drinkers should expect

The VFW Post 76 at 10th
Street and Broadway will host
the 6th Annual Twisted Taco
Truck Throwdown, a taco and
food truck competition, on
Saturday, May 7 from 4 p.m.
to midnight.
Presented by Twisted Tea,
this free for all ages event will
feature live music from Los #3
Dinners during the day and
Finding Friday in the evening
as local taco trucks and food
trucks showcase their twisted
culinary masterpieces.
Attendees will enjoy a sampling period from 4 p.m. to 8
p.m. when tacos al pastor will
be available from all trucks for
only $1. Each truck will feature
a signature item as well, giving
event-goers a variety of eats
from which to choose.
La Paloma White Wings is
the Official Tortilla and many
of the participating trucks will
feature these delicious readymade tortillas, or tortillas
made from their mixes, in their
menu items at the event. The
Official Hot Sauce will also
be featured by many of the
participants.
Texan Original, from the
proud makers of Ricos, comes
in three flavors and all will
be available at various food
trucks throughout the event.
The 2015 competition featured
21 of San Antonio’s favorite
taco trucks, from which the
2015 Grand Champion Teka
Molino Mobile was crowned,

ing during the event.
The VFW Post 76 is the oldest post in Texas. This event
has historically been one of the
top fundraisers for the VFW
Post 76 Veteran Relief Fund.
Again this year, a portion of
the proceeds will benefit this
fund that provides assistance
to veterans in need.
