census records, Meeker has a
very low poverty rate, the result of a strong economic base
in Meeker. The primary industry in Rio Blanco County is
agriculture which includes the
natural resource industry.
One of the largest
economic
assets
found in
this area
is the
Piceance
Creek
Basin. Located west of
Highway 13
and south of
Highway 64,
along County
Road 5 be-
tween
Meeker and Rifle,
this area is rich in natural resources and a huge economic
driver for this region. A U.S.
Geological Survey assessment
estimated 1.5 trillion barrels of
oil shale reserves in the
Piceance Basin region, representing the largest oil shale
deposit in the world. As energy companies advance their
technologies, the ability to
harvest the rich bounty of the
area becomes a realistic
possibility.
The
Piceance Basin
also contains trillions of
cubic feet of natural gas. The
majority of gas is trapped in

dense rock thousands of feet
underground. These “tight
gas” deposits are expensive
to recover. However, energy
companies drilling in the
Piceance Basin have
developed new technologies that enable
a more cost-effective method of extracting
unconventional
natural gas reserves. Over the
next 20 years,
an estimated
20,000 new
wells will be
drilled in the Basin. This
activity has significant impacts on the local
economies as well as the
traffic flow on Highway 13.
The Meeker Chamber of
Commerce continually works
with energy company representatives and local government officials to create
balance between this booming industry and our rural,
wildlife-rich community to ensure a productive, prosperous
and responsible future.

The History of
the Meeker Area
The White River Valley is
an area rich in cultural heritage
and dramatic American history. History enthusiasts are
encouraged to visit the numerous historical sites Meeker has
to offer, including the White
River Museum housed in the
1880s U. S. Army Garrison
Officer’s Quarters. Learn
about the
‘Meeker
Massacre,’
the Battle of
Milk Creek,
and the start of
the last Ute
War, prompting
the Colorado
Ute Removal Act.
The Ute lived in
the White River
Valley area until
their removal by the United
States government after the
Meeker Massacre in September 1879.
The introduction of
horses by Spaniards changed
the Ute way of life entirely.
Horses gave the Ute the ability
to travel long distances in
short periods of time, hunt
with greater chances of success, conquer other native
tribes and enjoy new recreational past times. The Ute
loved to race horses and
would often race in a popular
meadow just outside of
Meeker. Settlers and other
tribes from miles around
would travel to watch the
races. The Ute made much of
their wealth from gambling
and organizing the races. The
pony track area was later
named Powell Park after the
famous explorer John Wesley
Powell who lived with the
White River Ute during the
winter of 1868.
On the
heels of
John Wesley Powell came missionaries and settlers
looking to bring
Christianity and
‘civilization’ to the
Ute. In 1878, a
New York Tribune
reporter named
Nathan C. Meeker was appointed by the United States
government to oversee the
White River Indian Agency in
an attempt to transform the
Ute into farmers. However,
the Ute resented and resisted
these efforts. The resulting
conflicts led to a highly volatile
relationship between settlers
and the Ute. Nathan Meeker
threatened to convert the race
track into a ‘civilized’ farming
pasture and eradicate horses

ing and farming. This enraged
the Ute who prized their
horses and considered them a
status symbol and source of
wealth. Hostilities
quickly escalated.
Meeker sent for
Major Thomas T.
Thornburgh and 200
soldiers to keep
peace and protect
the agency which
ignited a conflict
between the Ute
warriors and the
United States
soldiers. Tensions linger-
ing from recent incidents at
the Agency, the Sand Creek
Massacre of 1864 and the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876
resulted in a Ute raid on the
White River Indian Agency.
During this raid the women
and children housed near the
agency were taken hostage
and Nathan Meeker and 10
other agency employees were
killed.

outside the Agency, Thornburgh and his men met a band
of Ute warriors near Milk
Creek. Thornburgh was one
of the first killed during the
battle. The remainder of the
cavalry troops fortified themselves with the aid of 35 black
cavalrymen or ‘Buffalo Soldiers,’ one of whom was
awarded the Congressional
Medal of Honor for his extraordinary bravery and skill.
On Oct. 8, 1879, reinforcements arrived, led by Colonel
(General) Wesley Merritt and
2,000 soldiers, resulting in the
Battle of Milk Creek. These
tragedies resulted in the Ute
Removal Act of
1883,
removing the
Utes from Colorado and
the White River Valley. The
Utes refusal to actually leave
the area resulted in the
Ute Wars of 1887, the last U.S.
and Native American wars.
Following these events,
soldiers stayed behind to
maintain peace and set up a
camp which was occupied
until 1883 in what is the current location of the town of
Meeker. Several of the military
buildings remain, including
the officers’ quarters which
now house the

housing in the camp. Many of
these buildings formed the
basis of the downtown business district in Meeker. The
town of Meeker was incorporated in 1885, and became the
central hub of banking and
trade in Northwestern Colorado for several generations.
Meeker was the first incorporated town in Northwestern
Colorado for twenty years and
is the county seat for Rio
Blanco County. It attracted
numerous famous figures of
American history including
Billy the Kid, President
Theodore Roosevelt, and a
small bank robbery gang who
now permanently reside in the
Meeker Cemetery. For more

Recreational Guide
to the Outdoors
Meeker is the gateway to
some of the best public recreational lands in Colorado, including the White River
National Forest, Routt National Forest, Flat Tops Wilderness, and miles upon miles of
Bureau of Land Management
(BLM) and Division of Wildlife
(DOW) land. For those seeking boating, water sports,
horseback riding, hiking, rock
climbing, bicycling, OHV
travel, camping, hunting, fishing, backpacking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing,
snowmobiling, and other outdoor recreation, Meeker is an
inviting place. For additional
information and maps contact
the Blanco Ranger District or
BLM, 220 East Market St. or by
phone (970) 878-4039 or stop
by the Meeker Chamber of
Commerce.
Anyone planning to take
advantage of enjoying the
great outdoors should take a
few precautionary steps prior
to their expedition. It is a great
idea to obtain a wilderness
survival guide and injury prevention manual. The great
outdoors can be dangerous
unless you are well prepared
and informed beforehand.
This region is notorious for
poor cell phone coverage, so
carrying a satellite phone or
global positioning unit is paramount in ensuring your safety.
Although the days in Meeker
are fairly warm, visitors should
understand that nights often
drop below freezing.
Clothing should be appropriate to keep warm during
the night, but cool during the
day to prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Visitors
from lower elevations (elevations below 6,249 ft.)
should be aware of altitude sickness. Mild symptoms include dizziness,
headache, fatigue, appetite loss, increased
heart rate or shortness
of breath. Severe
symptoms include confusion or disorientation, shortness of breath at rest,
unconsciousness, and
cyanosis including bluing,
graying, or paling of skin
tone or complexion. If
symptoms exist, stop ascending altitude immediately, descend to a lower
altitude until symptoms
are less severe, and seek
medical attention.
Preventions of altitude
sickness recommendations
include:
Do not travel to high
altitudes rapidly especially for
altitudes over 10,000 ft.

OHV/ATV/SNOWMOBILE USAGE
Recreational Opportunities
An emerging outdoor
trend in recreation is concentrated around Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) or All-Terrain
Vehicle (ATV) usage. This fastgrowing industry is becoming a
preferred way for enthusiasts to
take advantage of the incredible public lands found in this
area. Permits and registrations
allow for public access and use
in the National Forests, and Division of Wildlife and Bureau of
Land Management lands. The
Blanco Ranger District of the
White River National Forest
oversees several
hundred thousand acres of
land which are
open to public
use via foot,
horseback, bicycle, and OHV/ATV.
In this beautiful
landscape, there
are OHV/ATV trails
spanning approximately 250 miles with
trails ranging in difficulty from easy to advanced. Meeker and Rio
Blanco County is an “OHV
friendly” community, and OHV
users can safely drive their vehicles on town streets and certain county roads. Motorized
and mechanical vehicles are
not allowed in the wilderness
area, but hikers and those on
horseback are welcome.
Outdoor recreation is not
limited to the warm summer
months alone. If snowmobiling
is another recreational pastime
for you, this area offers tremendous riding experiences! During winter months,
snowmobiling is a favorite
skiers, backcountry skiers and
those traveling on snowshoes
can take advantage of the
amazing 2.2 mile Marvine

and visitors. A local nonprofit organization, the White
River Snowmobiling Club, provides trail updates, keeps more
than100 miles of trails

designated trails throughout
the National Forest lands, and
riders can take in the beautiful

Camping in the
White River Valley
The White River Valley is a camper’s haven
and a true outdoor paradise! With several state
parks in the middle of
the mountains with
pristine lakes and
amazing views, the
area offers exciting
trails for hikers, bikers, OHV/ATVs and horseback
riding. Camping in the White
River Valley is a getaway from
hectic schedules and traffic.
No over stimulating billboards, just views filled with
towering spruce, twinkling aspens, mountain peaks, and
clear lakes and rivers. The only
sound is the wind whistling
through the trees and the occasional bugle of a nearby elk.
While the area promises
an enjoyable time, campers
should be aware of the environment and should research
the area before heading out to
ensure the proper equipment
is packed. Camping essentials
include:
Water resistant tent
Sleeping bag properly
rated for weather conditions
Sunscreen and insect repellent
Flashlights
Matches- Bring a waterproof case, and alternative
sources of heat
Maps of the area
First aid kit
Extra clothing – It is wise
to bring enough clothes
to layer for colder night
temperatures. Weather
patterns can change rap-
idly,
so be prepared.
Most importantly –
DRINK WATER. The
drier and warmer
climate requires increased hydration.
Local spots to investigate are: Vaughn
Lake, Meadow Lake,
Himes Peak, Marvine, North Fork,
South Fork and
Trappers Lake. The
local park rangers,
US Forest Service
and BLM representatives are great resources for information.
Your camping experience
can be enhanced and
made safer by following a
few simple guidelines.
Never camp alone
Be aware of fire restrictions and regulations and
always monitor your
campsite
Use established fire rings
when possible — be responsible with camp fires
If you pack it in — pack it
out
Store your food a safe distance from your tent

Geocaching:
A different kind of hunting
An increasingly popular
outdoor activity is geocaching,
or a GPS treasure hunting
game played throughout the
world by adventure seekers
equipped with GPS devices.
The basic premise is to locate
hidden containers, called
“geocaches” and then share
your experiences online at
www.geocaching.com. Meeker
is host to many of these hidden treasures. You can obtain
a map and a list online. Geo-
cachers obtain the coordinates
and seek out the cache using
their handheld GPS devices.
Our mission at the Meeker
Chamber is to help people
enjoy the outdoors. We want
to help you make memories
and we know that geocaching
is a great way to do that. You
can learn more about this activity by visiting www.geocaching.com or by contacting
the Meeker Chamber of Commerce. Happy hunting!
Hunting & Fishing:
The Meeker Chamber of
Commerce is a wonderful resource for hunters and anglers
to obtain information on hunting and fishing access in the
White River Valley. If you are
interested in finding more information on this area and outfitting and guiding services in
the region, stop in and pick up
brochures, maps, information
on dining and accommodations or call and have us send
you information on the area.
Northwestern Colorado
offers some of the most successful hunting areas in the
state. Each year thousands of
hunters come to Meeker in
search of trophy animals.
Hunters pursue many species –
elk, deer, moose, pronghorn
antelope, bear, mountain lion,
coyotes, turkeys, grouse and
pheasants, to name a few.
Meeker was also home to the
notorious ‘ghost’ or ‘phantom’
buck – an enormous albino
mule deer – which eluded
hunters for several years.
Hunters will encounter terrain
with lower elevations of 6,000
feet climbing to several peaks
in the Flat Tops Wilderness

Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th
President of the United States
visited Meeker more than once
to take advantage of Meeker’s
wild game hunting and gold
medal fishing waters. In
1901, Roosevelt hunted
mountain lion
and fished the
White River.
Mountain lions in
this area are
known to reach
more than 8 feet in
length from tail to

more than
150 pounds.
Roosevelt’s
success
and enjoyment of
the hunt
led him
to return in
1905.
Today, fly
fishing is a common pastime for many residents and
visitors of Meeker. Anglers can
take advantage of several public access fishing areas within a
couple miles of town. The
Blanco Ranger District has 111
miles of fishable streams, 757
acres of natural lakes and 25
acres of reservoirs providing
those interested with ample
fishing opportunities. Many
guide and outfitters offer summer horseback rides into remote mountain lakes providing
for a great day in the outdoors
and exclusive fishing.
The Colorado
Division
of Wildlife is
an excellent resource
for fishing regulations, maps to

much more. Meeker is the

Cool mountain streams and
winter runoff provide sustainable habitat for some of the
largest trout in Colorado. In
the last decade, winter ice fish-

According to the 2004

nearly 25% of Colorado anglers take advantage of the
winter season to fish, and

Scenic & Historic
Byway
A visit to Meeker, Colorado, would not be complete
without traveling the tranquil
scenic and historic byway. The
Flat Tops Wilderness is the perfect opportunity to see nature
in its most undisturbed state.
Allow at least 2 ½ hours driving
time to travel the byway from
Meeker to Yampa. The trip is
approximately 81 miles long.
Fuel and other conveniences
are only available in Meeker or
Yampa, so be sure to fuel your
vehicle prior to traveling. Of the
81 mile trip, approximately 39
miles are unpaved but well
maintained and accessible during warmer months. Be sure to
observe posted road closures
as the scenic byway often
closes from late fall until early
spring due to deep snow.
The Flat Tops were
formed many years ago when
lava springs broke free and created mountains where none existed before. Glacial climates
chiseled the mountains into
able to leave the “hustle and
bustle” of daily life at the trailhead and truly appreciate nature on their trek.
Originally, the U.S. government intended the area to
be surveyed and developed to
make way for home sites and a
highway system. In 1919, Forest Service surveyor Arthur H.
Carhart recommended the area
be left undeveloped because
of its unique beauty and abundant wildlife. He identified the
area as “The Cradle of Wilderness.”
The Flat Tops Wilderness
was one of the first lands to be
protected as wilderness and is
the second largest wilderness
area in Colorado. Its wilderness
status protects it from motorized or mechanical vehicle traffic and development. For
additional information on Flat
Tops Wilderness trails or a map
of the area please feel free to

of Commerce.
steep valleys and hanging
lakes. Those interested in the
study of how the Rocky Mountains were formed can observe
the geological history of Colorado in full view along the
panorama of the scenic byway.
In autumn the hillsides are set
ablaze with bright yellow, red,
orange and green foliage. This
in contrast with frequently
snowcapped mountain peaks
leaves the observer with an impression of driving through an
oil painting.
Hiking through the Flat
Tops Wilderness is a truly amazing experience. This fabulous
wilderness area features more
than 230 miles of hiking trails
and beautiful vistas. Hikers are

ERBM Recreation
& Parks District
For more than 30 years
the Eastern Rio Blanco Metropolitan Recreation & Park District has been the primary
resource for recreational opportunities for children, families and adults in Eastern Rio
Blanco County. Founded in
1981, the ERBM Recreation &
Park District is a non-profit organization whose mission is to
create opportunities for recreational, cultural and park activities for the residents and
visitors of Eastern Rio Blanco
County. The district strives to
provide programs and opportunities that encourage
healthy lifestyles and which
contribute to improving the
quality of life within our community.
In 2008, the district
opened the Meeker Recreation Center, located at 101
Ute Road. This amazing 25,000
square foot facility features a
family aquatics area with a
four-lane lap pool, whirlpool,
leisure pool, water slide, zerodepth entry, and a lazy river.
The MRC also houses a mod-
ern fitness and exercise room
with state-of-the-art cardio
and strength equipment, a
studio for dance and fitness
classes, classrooms for enrichment programs and a free
lounge area with access to
free WiFi. The center has
proven to be a great asset to
Meeker!
Paintbrush Park, located
in the Meeker Recreation Center complex, features baseball
and softball fields, flower gardens, a sledding hill, a kidfriendly playground with
swings, climbers, slides, diggers and the “multi-pondo.”A
pavilion with picnic tables is
available for family reunions,
birthday parties or just a nice
quiet lunch. This park also includes an archery range which
is free and open to the public
during daylight hours. Fay Action Park, open during daylight hours, is located at 480
Main Street and allows skateboarders to increase their skills
and have a great time on the
ramps and boxes.

quality of life and the opportunities for recreation within the
community, the Recreation and
Park District is currently improving and expanding their
parks system. The Phillip &
Dorcas Jensen Memorial Park,
scheduled for completion in
2012, is a 57-acre non-motorized open space which will include a trail system consisting
of roughly three miles of
looped trails of varying difficulty for use by all ages and
abilities, as well as benches
and covered shelters. Recently,
several public parks and playgrounds in Meeker have also
become part of the District.
The ERBM Recreation &
Park District is governed by a
five-member elected volunteer
board of directors and managed by a staff of 35 full and
part time employees. ERBM
Recreation & Park District also
employs many seasonal employees and utilizes a large
volunteer base of support. For

United States ‘Capitol Christmas
Tree’ to come from the Meeker
area in 2012
A small piece of Northwest Colorado will make a noticeable presence in
Washington, D.C.
during the 2012
holiday season.
The U.S. Capitol
Christmas Tree will
come from the White River
National Forest East of
Meeker! The Capitol Christmas Tree, also known as “The
People’s Tree” is set on the
lawn of the U.S. Capitol and
will be lit by the Speaker of
the House and a lucky Colorado child in early December
2012. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the White
River National Forest and the
people of northwest Colorado
and we are excited about this
event! Look for a celebration
in Meeker during the first part
of November to send the tree
off to our Nation’s Capitol.
Since 1970, the United
States Forest Service has overseen the harvest and transport
of a tree from a National Forest to our Nation’s capitol.
This year that honor goes to
the Blanco Ranger District
based in Meeker.
After
the
tree
is cut in November, its first
stop will be in Meeker where it
will be prepared for the journey to the U.S. Capitol. After
its appearance in Meeker, the
tree and its entourage will visit
several communities throughout Colorado and then continue across the country until
the tree arrives in Washington,
D.C. in late November. This is
a great opportunity for Colorado communities to participate in celebrations as the
tree makes its way to Washington, D.C. The majority of costs
associated with transporting
the tree are covered by private
donations of cash and in-kind
support. The Forest Service is
working with a non-profit partner, “Choose Outdoors”, an
organization representing a
coalition of outdoor recreation inter-

ests, to undertake the
fundraising effort for this
project.
Once the
tree arrives in
Washington, D.C.
it will be decorated with ornaments handmade by
Coloradans. An ornament
drive was initiated early in
2012 to solicit and collect approximately 5000 ornaments
from across Colorado that are
constructed to hold up in winter weather and be visible for
distances up to 70 feet. School
children from the Meeker and
Rangely public schools were
very excited to learn that they
can contribute to the project.
Scout troops, 4-H clubs, and
other youth organizations will
also take part in contributing
handmade ornaments.While
the Forest Service is responsible for transporting the tree,
ornaments, and smaller companion trees to Washington
D.C., this is considered a gift
from the State of Colorado to
the people of
the United
States.
