The primary industry in Rio Blanco County is agriculture which includes the natural resource industry. One of the largest economic assets found in this area is the Piceance Creek Basin. Located west of Highway 13 and south of Highway 64, along County Road 5 be- tween Meeker and Rifle, this area is rich in natural resources and a huge economic driver for this region. A U.S. Geological Survey assessment estimated 1.5 trillion barrels of oil shale reserves in the Piceance Basin region, representing the largest oil shale deposit in the world. As energy companies advance their technologies, the ability to harvest the rich bounty of the area becomes a realistic possibility. The Piceance Basin also contains trillions of cubic feet of natural gas. The majority of gas is trapped in Always Something New to Explore | 11 dense rock thousands of feet underground. These “tight gas” deposits are expensive to recover. However, energy companies drilling in the Piceance Basin have developed new technologies that enable a more cost-effective method of extracting unconventional natural gas reserves. Over the next 20 years, an estimated 20,000 new wells will be drilled in the Basin. This activity has significant impacts on the local economies as well as the traffic flow on Highway 13. The Meeker Chamber of Commerce continually works with energy company representatives and local government officials to create balance between this booming industry and our rural, wildlife-rich community to ensure a productive, prosperous and responsible future. | Meeker, Colroado Information on Meeker www.meekerchamber.com For additional information on Meeker and surrounding areas please be sure and search the following websites: k meekerchamber.com townofmeeker.org co.rio-blanco.co.us meeker.k12.co.us meekercolorado.com bestplaces.net flattopsbyway.com blm.gov/co meekerrecdistrict.com coloradodirectory.com/ colorado.com colorado.gov wildlife.state.co.us/Viewing/WheretoGo/ coloradobirdingtrail.com ank You j Thank you to the following individuals or organizations for their contributions of articles, historical information, photograpy and graphic design: Bobby Gutierrez, Code of the West Outfitters, David Steinman, ERBM Recreation and Park District, Katelin Cook, Kathryn Stewart, Meeker Chamber Board of Directors, Pioneers Medical Center, Red Fox IT, RBC Lodging Tax Board, Rio Blanco Herald Times, Sable Mountain Outfitters, Tonya Morris, Trappers Lake Lodge, US Forest Service and White River Museum Meeker, Colorado | 12 | Always Something New to Explore What is there to do in Meeker? History enthusiasts are encouraged to visit the numerous historical sites Meeker has to offer, including the White River Museum housed in the 1880s U. S. Army Garrison Officer’s Quarters. Learn about the ‘Meeker Massacre,’ the Battle of Milk Creek, and the start of the last Ute War, prompting the Colorado Ute Removal Act. The Ute lived in the White River Valley area until their removal by the United States government after the Meeker Massacre in September 1879. The introduction of horses by Spaniards changed the Ute way of life entirely. Horses gave the Ute the ability to travel long distances in short periods of time, hunt with greater chances of success, conquer other native tribes and enjoy new recreational past times. The Ute loved to race horses and would often race in a popular meadow just outside of Meeker. Settlers and other tribes from miles around would travel to watch the races. The Ute made much of their wealth from gambling and organizing the races. The pony track area was later named Powell Park after the famous explorer John Wesley Powell who lived with the White River Ute during the winter of 1868. On the heels of John Wesley Powell came missionaries and settlers looking to bring Christianity and ‘civilization’ to the Ute. In 1878, a New York Tribune reporter named Nathan C. Meeker was appointed by the United States government to oversee the White River Indian Agency in an attempt to transform the Ute into farmers. However, the Ute resented and resisted these efforts. The resulting conflicts led to a highly volatile relationship between settlers and the Ute. Nathan Meeker threatened to convert the race track into a ‘civilized’ farming pasture and eradicate horses not necessary for everyday liv- Always Something New to Explore | 15 ing and farming. This enraged the Ute who prized their horses and considered them a status symbol and source of wealth. Hostilities quickly escalated. Meeker sent for Major Thomas T. Thornburgh and 200 soldiers to keep peace and protect the agency which ignited a conflict between the Ute warriors and the United States soldiers. Tensions linger- ing from recent incidents at the Agency, the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 resulted in a Ute raid on the White River Indian Agency. During this raid the women and children housed near the agency were taken hostage and Nathan Meeker and 10 other agency employees were killed. Approximately 18 miles See HISTORY, Page 17 | Meeker, Colroado The History of Meeker www.meekerchamber.com winter recreation Meeker, Colorado | 16 | Always Something New to Explore The History of the Meeker Area Continued from Page 15 outside the Agency, Thornburgh and his men met a band of Ute warriors near Milk Creek. Thornburgh was one of the first killed during the battle. The remainder of the cavalry troops fortified themselves with the aid of 35 black cavalrymen or ‘Buffalo Soldiers,’ one of whom was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his extraordinary bravery and skill. On Oct. 8, 1879, reinforcements arrived, led by Colonel (General) Wesley Merritt and 2,000 soldiers, resulting in the Battle of Milk Creek. These tragedies resulted in the Ute Removal Act of 1883, removing the Utes from Colorado and the White River Valley. The Utes refusal to actually leave the area resulted in the Ute Wars of 1887, the last U.S. and Native American wars. Following these events, soldiers stayed behind to maintain peace and set up a camp which was occupied until 1883 in what is the current location of the town of Meeker. Several of the military buildings remain, including the officers’ quarters which now house the White River Museum. Several hundred soldiers were quartered in the community barracks, now the site of the Meeker Hotel and Café. The officers and soldiers were separated by an open parade ground where the Rio Blanco County Courthouse is today. There was a military hospital, trading post, soldiers’ clubs and civilian Always Something New to Explore | 17 housing in the camp. Many of these buildings formed the basis of the downtown business district in Meeker. The town of Meeker was incorporated in 1885, and became the central hub of banking and trade in Northwestern Colorado for several generations. Meeker was the first incorporated town in Northwestern Colorado for twenty years and is the county seat for Rio Blanco County. It attracted numerous famous figures of American history including Billy the Kid, President Theodore Roosevelt, and a small bank robbery gang who now permanently reside in the Meeker Cemetery. Anyone planning to take advantage of enjoying the great outdoors should take a few precautionary steps prior to their expedition. It is a great idea to obtain a wilderness survival guide and injury prevention manual. The great outdoors can be dangerous unless you are well prepared and informed beforehand. This region is notorious for poor cell phone coverage, so carrying a satellite phone or global positioning unit is paramount in ensuring your safety. Although the days in Meeker are fairly warm, visitors should understand that nights often drop below freezing. Clothing should be appropriate to keep warm during the night, but cool during the day to prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Visitors from lower elevations (elevations below 6,249 ft.) should be aware of altitude sickness. Mild symptoms include dizziness, headache, fatigue, appetite loss, increased heart rate or shortness of breath. Severe symptoms include confusion or disorientation, shortness of breath at rest, unconsciousness, and cyanosis including bluing, graying, or paling of skin tone or complexion. If symptoms exist, stop ascending altitude immediately, descend to a lower altitude until symptoms are less severe, and seek medical attention. Preventions of altitude sickness recommendations include: Do not travel to high altitudes rapidly especially for altitudes over 10,000 ft. The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will come from the White River National Forest East of Meeker! The Capitol Christmas Tree, also known as “The People’s Tree” is set on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol and will be lit by the Speaker of the House and a lucky Colorado child in early December 2012. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the White River National Forest and the people of northwest Colorado and we are excited about this event! Look for a celebration in Meeker during the first part of November to send the tree off to our Nation’s Capitol. Since 1970, the United States Forest Service has overseen the harvest and transport of a tree from a National Forest to our Nation’s capitol. This year that honor goes to the Blanco Ranger District based in Meeker. After the tree is cut in November, its first stop will be in Meeker where it will be prepared for the journey to the U.S. Capitol. After its appearance in Meeker, the tree and its entourage will visit several communities throughout Colorado and then continue across the country until the tree arrives in Washington, D.C. in late November. This is a great opportunity for Colorado communities to participate in celebrations as the tree makes its way to Washington, D.C. The majority of costs associated with transporting the tree are covered by private donations of cash and in-kind support. The Forest Service is working with a non-profit partner, “Choose Outdoors”, an organization representing a coalition of outdoor recreation inter- Always Something New to Explore | 59 ests, to undertake the fundraising effort for this project. Once the tree arrives in Washington, D.C. it will be decorated with ornaments handmade by Coloradans. An ornament drive was initiated early in 2012 to solicit and collect approximately 5000 ornaments from across Colorado that are constructed to hold up in winter weather and be visible for distances up to 70 feet. School children from the Meeker and Rangely public schools were very excited to learn that they can contribute to the project. Scout troops, 4-H clubs, and other youth organizations will also take part in contributing handmade ornaments. While the Forest Service is responsible for transporting the tree, ornaments, and smaller companion trees to Washington D.C., this is considered a gift from the State of Colorado to the people of the United States. | Meeker, Colroado 2012 Business Directory Accounting & Tax Services Colorado C.P.A.
