THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
The world needs a new evangelization! The people of our
city, our nation and our continent are waiting for the
encounter with Jesus Christ who makes all things new.
In every age, Jesus draws near to offer his salvation to all
people. He calls: “Behold, I stand at the door and
knock!”
Jesus invites men and women to follow him and seek the
Kingdom of God. He calls them to live as God’s children
in his family, the Catholic Church.
But in our time, it seems to be getting harder for people
to hear the voice of Jesus and his promise of salvation.
There are many other voices and many other customs of
living. Our society is growing more secularized.
People are losing their awareness of God’s presence in
the world and in their lives. And as the sense of God
fades, we see around us the sad effects in lost lives and
broken families.
The men and women of our time need someone to show
them the way to Jesus, who alone can show them the face
of God. They need someone to help open up the door of
faith for them.
They are waiting for us, my dear brothers and sisters!
These thoughts come to my mind at this new moment of
grace in the life of our great Archdiocese of Los
Angeles….
The Church exists to evangelize. The Church belongs to
Jesus and he gave her only one mission, the salvation of
souls: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I
have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to
the close of the age.”
The Church’s mission is ever ancient and ever new. And
all of us in the Church — bishops, priests and deacons;
religious and consecrated men and women; seminarians
and lay people in every walk of life — we all have
responsibility for this mission.

YOU INVITED TO HONOR AND CELEBRATE OUR
PATRONESS, OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL
The devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and the
icon which is honored throughout the world, has a special
place in the hearts of our parishioners. The history of the
devotion and icon reveals the providential hand of God at
work through our Blessed Mother and God’s desire for us
to venerate Mary and invoke her perpetual help because He
has given her an important role in salvation.
A brief explanation of some of the symbolism of the
icon is pictured below. There are many websites where you
can find a more detailed explanation of the icon as well as
the history behind the icon and the devotion to Our Lady of
Perpetual Help.
To honor and celebrate our beloved patroness, Our
Lady of Perpetual Help, we will be holding a nine-day
novena culminating with Mass on her feast day. The
novena will be in the church at 7:00 p.m. each evening
from June 18th through the 26th except on Saturday,
June 21st, when it will be at 7:45 a.m., before morning
Mass. The novena will conclude with a special Mass on
Our Lady’s feast day, June 27th, at 7:00 p.m. and then
fellowship in the parish hall. We invite you to join in this
beautiful devotion as many nights as possible. Let’s come
together to offer Our Lady our love and thanks for all she
has done for us.

Spanish, please call the Dominican
Sisters at 661-259-2276.
DID YOU KNOW?
BULLYING IS A FORM OF ABUSE
Did you know that bullying is a form of abuse, and
therefore is forbidden in our Catholic schools? Bullying
typically consists of direct behaviors, such as teasing,
taunting, threatening, hitting, shoving and stealing. But it
might also be indirect, such as spreading rumors that cause
victims to be socially isolated through intentional
exclusion. Cyberbullying, which involves the use of the
Internet or mobile phones to send inappropriate messages
and images to or about others, is also behavior that is not
tolerated in our Catholic schools. If you suspect bullying of
a child at school, please contact the school principal with
your concerns. For particular help, you may call the
Archdiocese’s Victims Assistance Ministry, 213-637-7650.

BRAINSTORMING THE FUTURE OF
MUSIC MINISTRY FOR OLPH
I have been the Director of Music and Liturgy since
August 19, 2013. I came to OLPH with the hope of
making a difference in the music and liturgy of the
parish. I do believe that I have made a difference, but in
order to grow, I need help. In preparing this column I
did a little brainstorming session of what I would like to
see, in music, in the future of OLPH:
• A Choir that would have the ability to sing some of the
great music found in the history of the Catholic Church.
A choir that could prepare and present a Requiem Mass
(Fauré, Durufle or Rutter) in the Month of Remembrance
(November).
• Children's Choir, in which the young singers of our
parish would learn to sing the great music or our Church.
A choir that could become a member of Pueri Cantores.
This choir could participate in one of the Sunday Masses
once or twice per month.
• Youth Choir: build up our current youth choir. Include
more singers and sing a wider variety of music found in
the repertoire of our Church.
• Small ensembles, to prepare and present music at
various Masses (such as the current 8:30 Mass
Ensemble).
• Bell Choirs: Elementary School, Middle School, High
School and Adult Choirs.
• Cantors, from our own parish, to train and serve our
community at the different weekend Masses, funerals,
wedding and quinceanras.
• Instrumentalists: particularly keyboard, guitar, bass
and percussion players to participate in the above
mentioned ensembles.
What can you do to help? Maybe you would like to be a
part of a "Music Commission" to help move these ideas,
and other ideas, forward? Do you know someone who
sings or plays an instrument that you would love to see
get involved?
I welcome any thoughts and ideas you might have.

VIRTUS TRAINING FOR VOLUNTEERS
We will be holding a training class for all volunteers on
Monday, June 23rd, in Conference Room 1 from 6:00 to
9:00 p.m. This class is for those who have not previously
taken the class or for those who need recertification. You
must register with the Religious Education Office, at
259-4266, to take the class.
VOLUNTEER TO HELP SENIORS
As our parish continues to grow, the Health Ministry
would like to enhance its offerings by adding the Senior
Outreach program. This program would use volunteers that
have been screened and trained by Providence Holy Cross
staff. It would offer volunteers to take seniors to doctor
appointments, help with shopping, or someone to just visit
and listen. Since we are re-starting this program we will
need more volunteers to give of their time. If you are
interested in volunteering, please call the parish office at
259-2276.

The Most Holy Trinity - June 15, 2014

O Santísima Trinidad, gloria a Ti.

bromas pesadas, burlas, amenazas, golpes, empujones y
robo.
