“The Americans on D Day” will be featured sharing
the story of the invasion of Normandy which marked

film, we’ll hear from local veterans and discuss what
they’ve seen.

In this costumed performance, Lady Anne Bacon,
attendant to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, arrives
from court to describe life in Renaissance England.
From the royal schoolroom to the formal presence
chamber, Lady Bacon has seen it all. She educated
her son Francis Bacon, traveled with the Queen on
Progress, and lived during the times of Shakespeare,
Raleigh, Drake, and Walsingham. Dressed in period
clothing and using her traveling basket full of
necessaries, Christine Brookes captures the essence
of a Renaissance courtier’s life.

Unanimously acclaimed the first great American
musical, this 1927 show was so far ahead of its time
that there would be no comparable achievement
for nearly two decades. Charles Troy will discuss
how composer Jerome Kern and librettist Oscar
Hammerstein II adapted Edna Ferber’s sprawling
contemporary novel into a masterpiece that has
spawned numerous film versions, revivals, and
recordings, all of which have contributed to its
legendary status.

The rakish Duke of Mantua seduces and abandons
Count Monterone’s daughter. Monterone curses the
Duke, and—when ridiculed by Rigoletto, the Duke’s
court jester—curses Rigoletto as well. Rigoletto’s
daughter Gilda is in love with the Duke, whom she
knows only as a poor student. Courtiers abduct Gilda,
who is herself seduced and abandoned by the Duke,
leaving Rigoletto desperate for revenge. Rigoletto
hires an assassin to kill the Duke, but Gilda, learning
of the plan, allows herself to be killed in the Duke’s
place, fulfilling the “father’s curse” of Monterone on
Rigoletto.

A gallant knight, Walther, enters a song contest in
order to win the prize: Eva, the girl he loves, daughter
of the richest man in Nuremberg. In his “audition,”
Walther’s passionate artistry is initially rejected by
Nuremberg’s conservative guild of Mastersingers—
with the exception of the warm-hearted cobbler and
poet Hans Sachs, who encourages Walther in the
writing of a gloriously beautiful “prize song.” In the
end, Walther sings his “prize song” in the contest and
wins Eva.
“Bringing in the New Year
Garlands’ Style”
The Garlands traveled to Rio de Janeiro where at
8pm our time it is midnight their time.
The evening consisted of the music of Rio Bamba,
tasting Brigadeiros (a Brazilian chocolate), line
dancing with Jill, a Prosperity basket drawing,
and a Champagne toast and presentation by MAC
Chairperson, Tom Banfield.

a fashion show that will showcase the work of
Barrington High School stylists and student models.

is unlimited. Prizes will be awarded. All proceeds
from this fashion show will be used to build a home
for Monica Morales and her family of 8 who live in
a 90 square feet shack in the Guatemala City garbage
dump.

Members Advisory Committee
The MAC was founded in 2003 to provide a constructive and positive voice of the residents to the Garland’s
leadership team, primarily in matters of major importance. The MAC provides a special, focused channel of
communications to benefit both the Members and the Garlands leadership, and it acts as a “sounding board” for the
Garlands’ leadership on issues important to the community at large. Committee Members serve for three years and
each year the MAC selects new members and officers replacing those whose terms have been completed.
Members of the MAC for the year 2013 will be:
Tom Banfield (Chairman), Bucky Ellis, Betty Guthrie, Phyllis Hamilton, Scootie Jeffers, Paul Leonard,
Ron Lindquist, Harry Logue, Marlene Peterson, Rita Roche, Jake Schnur, and Carol Schwarz.
Every member of the Garlands can consider themselves to be an adjunct member of the MAC Committee. The
twelve listed members represent us all and speak for us. Its members are selected by the existing committee and
represent a balance of gender and location in the building.

Going on vacation? Going to visit family? You
can’t take the Garlands with you but you can take
the Gazette. Bring along a copy of the Gazette
and have a picture taken while holding it in front
of somthing which shows where you have been.
Give a copy to your children and grandchildren
so they can join in the fun. Give Jill the picture
and it will be displayed where all can see. Let’s
see how far the Gazette can travel!

Devotional for 2013
Please bring your aluminum pop tops to Resource
Center. The tabs are recycled by McDonald’s
partner United Scrap Metal and they receive
the market value of the recycled metal plus a
charitable match from United Scrap. Last year
they raised more than $40,000 from this program.
Members and staff are welcome to read the new daily
devotional in 2013. Read the daily devotional and
sign your name in the book just once.
Devotional Group Prayer Discussion

Time to enjoy a cup of coffee and gather as we
discuss prayers we may have to share. “How to Pray”
booklets will be distributed and discussed.
Aluminum Can Recycling Program

Sullivan elevators at the garage level. Bring your
cans to recycle to these areas.
Used Batteries
Annointing by Father Tom
There is a recycling bucket in the Resource Room
in which to place your used batteries.
Father Tom from St. Anne’s will conduct anointing at
the February mass at Prairieview.
Box Tops For Education
Ongoing in the Resource Center
There is a labeled basket with examples in
which to put your cut items. They will be sent
to Lydia Home in Chicago where each one will
be exchanged for 10 cents worth of education
materials and sports equipment for their children’s
programs. An easy way to make a donation.

The Celebration Continues . . .
Happy Anniversary (and Happy Valentines Day too!)
In an ongoing celebration of The Garlands 10th Anniversary, The Garlands
honors its members with a tribute to its many collective anniversary
celebrations and their lifetimes of commitment. Just in time for Valentine’s
Day, our Gallery at The Garlands will feature a photographic narrative of 16
members’ portraits and stories on the theme of “Commitment,” primarily as it
relates to their married lives with spouses both here and no longer with us. It’s
an inspiring show that features beautiful portraits and time-honored life lessons
for all. In addition, the whole Garlands community was invited to participate
in the celebration by contributing their stories of love and commitment, some
of which follow.
On Courtship
I was engaged when I met him. I
gave my ring back to my fiancé’s
mother and sent my fiance, who
was in the Marine’s in California,
a “Dear John” letter. ~ Janet

I (and he) can’t remember the
proposal, but I do remember
picking out our rings at Peacocks

I was assigned as a nurse to Mitch
who had hernia surgery and was
a freshman student. He asked me
how much I knew about algebra
and I said, “Enough.” He handed
me his book and had written “How
about a date if and when I get out
of here?” I dropped the book, and
he wondered if he had blown it.

On Wedding Day Snafus and Stories
Bruce’s brother had our car put up
on blocks, decorated and put stones
in the hubcaps. When we finally
got in it and drove away it sounded

The World’s Largest Anniversary Toast to 2,720 Years (and Counting) of Wedded Bliss!
Valentine’s Day, Thursday, February 14, 4:30-6:30; appetizers, beverages and wedding cake will be served
Pop the champagne!
The Worlds’ Largest Anniversary Toast is happening this
Valentine’s Day when Garlands members raise their glasses to toast
their 2,720 years (and still counting!) of cumulative marriage at The
Garlands 10th Anniversary party. Anniversary cake will be served as
party goers share stories of engagements, weddings, honeymoons and
past anniversaries that are sure to inspire. The Anniversary toast and
party kicks off another tribute to Garlands members in the form of a
photo-narrative art exhibit entitled Commitment: Stories of Lasting
Love (see page 16).

From the Executive Director
As we move into the second month of the new year, I am working on final
statistics and analysis of 2012 operations, preparing for the implementation
of HDTV and preparing our company for the initial licensing of a homecare
department. In addition, we have several new key positions to recruit for
and fill, notably, an Activities Coordinator to join Jill; a new painter; HVAC
engineer/maintenance and part-time Dining Room Manager to cover for Jamie
on her off days. As a company, we are moving ahead with several training
initiatives and recognition systems to honor our outstanding team (see below).
Our year is off to a good start, and we will certainly achieve much working
together.

Garlands Gold
all Team Members will receive a copy of the card or
nomination communication, as genuine praise and
thanks. A copy also is provided to the individual’s
supervisor for their personal record and further
acknowledgment during their annual performance
evaluation.
For a number of years The Garlands has followed the
“Fish Philosophy” training and recognition for our
Team Members. With 2013, we are letting the fish
swim away and are introducing a new program that
will be unique for The Garlands. This means that the
pieces of colorful paper in the shape of a fish will be
replaced by a new recognition card.
At quarterly Team Member events, the “Gold”
recipients are publicly praised and presented with a
“G” banner for their name badge, a $50 check and an
invitation to the annual “President’s Award Dinner.”
At the dinner one person will receive a $1,000 check
and trophy, and their name will be memorialized on a
special annual President’s Award recipient plaque.
The “Garlands Gold” is an award program designed
to recognize Garlands Team Members who embody
the Garlands Values (passion and innovation) while
delivering exceptional service to Members, Guests
and fellow Team Members by going above and
beyond expectations. An inclusive program whereby
Members, Guests and fellow Team Members
acknowledge, thank and praise a Team Member by
completing a “Garlands Gold” card or through email
or print submission. This submission also serves
as nomination for quarterly Gold Award and annual
Presidents Award.
In addition to the creation of this recognition program,
new training programs will promote exceptional
customer service and all Department Directors have
a goal of raising the bar on service with their team by
leading by example with our “Daily Practices.”
We invite members to join us in embracing this
new recognition opportunity and complete multiple
“Garlands Gold” cards throughout the year. We have
a great Team of employees and recognition is the best
motivator and satisfier.
All cards/entries are turned into the Concierge or
Administration offices. A specially designed peer
review committee will carefully evaluate each entry.
They will review and recommend “Gold” status for
cases in which the Team Member went above and
beyond expectations. Regardless of “Gold” status,

The Garlands Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary with Members’ Stories of Lasting Love
The Garlands of Barrington celebrates its 10th
Anniversary and commitment to the community
with a tribute to its members in a photographic
narrative exhibit entitled Commitment: Stories
of Lasting Love. The exhibit features inspiring
stories of Garlands members’ kept vows, love
and devotion that span a lifetime, offering a
rare, intimate glimpse at lasting love.
The exhibit’s portraits, taken by photographer
Brian Warling, and short stories, as told by
husbands and wives and written by Kathy
Wolf and Mary Klest, feature 16 perspectives
representing 823 years—and counting—of
commitment! The stories take unpredictable
twists and turns, like the one about the New
York City girl and the German country boy
who write to each other as international pen
pals then meet in Germany where they fall
in love while motorcycling together through
Bavaria’s Black Forest—the first of a lifetime
of adventures. They include high school
sweethearts, chance encounters, rekindled
hearts and brief courtships that led to a 57-year
marriage (“Bailing wasn’t an option! If I had to
do it all over again, I’d still pick you!”). There
is a couple whose most heroic claim-to-fame
after 58 years of wedded bliss is successfully
surviving the ‘60s with teens, and a widower
whose love lingers on through poetry (“Life
is more than what we planned . . . We saw
how love could blossom and then we made it
grow.”).
“It’s an honor and privilege to capture and
share our members’ precious memories,
living examples and sage advice on the theme
of commitment,” says Dawn L. Kempf,
The Garlands Vice President of Sales and
Marketing. “As this is our 10th Anniversary,
we are humbled by the many anniversaries our
members have celebrated and so pleased that
they chose to continue to live their well-lived
lives with us here at The Garlands.”

14, through the end of April from 8:30 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. as part The Garlands ongoing 10th
Anniversary celebration.
