About Galápagos and diving conditions
Climate (average temperatures)
The Galapagos Islands have a subtropical climate regulated by the cold Humboldt Current and the warm El
Nino current. From December to May: temperatures range from low 80°s to low 90°s (with possibilities of
rain). From June to September temperatures vary from low 60°'s to high 70°'s. This is the Garua season
(mist in the mornings). From October to December: temperatures range from 70°s to 80°' (dry season).
Marine Currents
The Galapagos Islands waters have the Humboldt Current's influence that brings cold waters especially
during the mist rainy season (from July to December). During the warm season (January to June), the
southeast trade winds become weaker and the water from the Panama Basin remains warm. During this
season climate is tropical with some occasional rains. "El Niño" current may cause a much greater flow of
warm waters, making the surface warmer and rainfall increase.
Average Water Temperature
January-June: 70°F-80°F (20C-26C)
July - December: 65°F - 75°F (18C- 23C)
Visibility:
Average visibility is from 8 to 10 meters (25ft to 35ft); on good visibility days it can reach approximately 18
meters (60ft).
Sea Conditions:
From July to December the sea is choppy, strong surge, strong winds.
Sailing time is longer (by 30 - 40 minutes approximately) when comparing to calm season sailing time. Antiseasickness medication is recommended.
From December to June the sea is calm with gentle breeze; sailing is easier.

Day by day
CLASSSIC SAFARI
Day 1: IN THE SEARCH OF THE GIANT TORTOISE
Having been met by an English-Speaking naturalist guide at Baltra Airport, you will cross the narrow Itabaca
Channel to Santa Cruz Island, heading up to a farm in the highlands for a delicious lunch. You will then have
the opportunity to explore the area´s vegetation and microclimates, as well as pit craters and lava tunnels,
and to become acquainted with its endemic Scalesia and Guayabillo forests. At the Tortoise reserve, you
will experience the emblematic Giant tortoises in their natural habitat in addition to the abundant birdlife
of the highlands. Your afternoon will conclude at Galápagos Safari Camp, with a sunset cocktail followed by
dinner.
DAY 2&3: CRUISING TO A NEIGHBOURING ISLAND
After an early wake-up call, a boat will take you to one of the uninhabited neighboring islands: North
Seymour, Bartholomew, Santa Fe or South Plaza. Each island has its own unique natural habitat, and you
will be guided through the evolutionary phenomena of your destination. The Galapagos Marine Reserve is
the second largest marine reserve in the world, and snorkeling off the boat it is highlight of the trip.
Alternatively, if you are SCUBA certificated, we can replace one or more trips with diving excursions.
DAY 4: EXPLORING THE EAST
In the morning you will be driven to the eastern part of the island. At 490 m above the sea level, Cerro Mesa
offers spectacular views and boasts the largest crater on Santa Cruz Island. It is home to a number of
endemic plants, as well as seven subspecies of finch and the vermilion flycatcher. After lunch you will visit
Garrapatero Beach, where the contrast of mangroves, black lava, white sand and turquoise water, along
with its birdlife and flamingo lagoon, is magnificent. Kayaking and mountain biking are optional activities.
DAY 5: SUNRISE WALK AND DEPARTURE
On your last day you can tour Galapagos Safari Camp at leisure or enjoy the sunrise from our viewpoint
before you airport transfer.
FAMILY SAFARI
This program is designed to provide a comprehensive experience that is packed with engaging educational
experiences for both parents and children. We have a core group of hand-picked naturalist guides to lead
this special safari, many of whom have their young families at home and therefore understand the need for
flexibility on the excursions. Our chef has a substantial repertoire of kid friendly meals prepared for each
day´s outings. Slightly more adventurous families, or families with older children might prefer to stay in our
luxury tents, while those who favor more private and cohesive lodging can opt for our three-bedroom
family suites.
Day 1: LAND OF THE GIANT TORTOISE
Having been met by an English-Speaking naturalist guide at Baltra Airport, you will cross the narrow Itabaca
Channel to Santa Cruz Island, and then driven to the Safari Camp.
Once there, your guide will entertain the children with an overview of the animal species they are soon to
encounter, while you get settled in. After lunch you will have the opportunity to explore our 135 acre farm,
picking local tropical fruit, harvesting cacao and spotting local birds. Before sundown you can visit the lava
tunnels and search for giant tortoises roaming the National Tortoise Reserve that is adjacent to GCS.

DAY 2: ACTIVITY DAY
After breakfast, you will visit a neighboring organic coffee plantation in order to learn about responsible
small-scale farming in the Galapagos, and the children will get the chance to pick some coffee beans. Then
you will drive to the enormous crater of Cerro Mesa for a short walk to a wetlands area that is home to a
wonderful variety of birds and the occasional bathing tortoise. After lunch at a local downhill ride to
Garrapatero Beach, where the contrast of mangroves, black lava white sand and turquoise water, along is
magnificent. You can also explore the bay in sea kayaks, accompanied by marine iguanas, blue footed
boobies and countless shorebirds.
In the evening, back at GSC, parents can relax while the children are engaged in a private art class with a
local artist.
DAY 3: EXPLORE AN UNINHABITED ISLAND
Today will be spent sporting wildlife and snorkeling on one of the uninhabited islands easily accesed by a
shared day yatch from Santa Cruz Island, all in the company of your naturalist guide. The exact island
location will depend on travel dates, but options include: North Seymour, South Plazas, Santa Fe and
Bartholomew, all of which are rich in wildlife and offer wonderful snorkeling opportunities.
DAY4: CATCH FISH
We are involved in a program with the National Park Service that aims to engage local fisherman’s in
tourism activities as an alternative means of income, with the added benefit of protecting local fisheries
from depletion.
The fishermen have very safe and modern speedboats, which we charter privately for the day. The
opportunity to go on an excursion with local fishermen has been a favorite among children visiting us. With
your guide acting as translator, the children will be taught some local fishing tricks and the fishermen will
share some of their anecdotes from a lifetime at sea. After fishing, you will land on a deserted beach and
have the chance to snorkel in a spot known only to locals. This excursions is both a wildlife experience and
a cultural exchange opportunity, cherished by all who experience it.
DAY 5: CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION AND BAY TOUR
This morning you will visit the famous Charles Darwin Research Station to learn about its preservation
efforts and scientific research. The children will have an up-close experience with the tortoise that is the
island´s namesake. Parents can enjoy some free time to wander around Puerto Ayora, while your guide
takes the children to play at a local playground or on a tour of the local fish market on the waterfront. After
lunch you will board a chartered yatch that will take you to explore the calm waters of Tortuga Bay, a white
sandy beach with basking marine iguanas, and shallow turquoise waters teeming with white tip reef sharks
and fish.
DAY 6: HOMEWARD BOUND
After a leisure morning in the GSC, you will be accompanied by your naturalist guide to Baltra airport for
your flight back to mainland Ecuador.

The canopy walk. - a much anticipated addition to Sacha’s activities is our 940-foot (275-meter)
long canopy walkway. At approximately 94 feet (30 meters) above the ground, imagine exploring
the rainforest up in the treetops! This sturdy walkway is fixed to the ground by three metal
towers for stability, and offers an unbelievable opportunity to spot dozens of animals and
epiphytes seldom seen from the ground. Thousands of colorful birds await to be spotted, and
with some luck you might even follow along with troops of monkeys as they forage through the
forest canopy.Taking a leisurely walk above the trees on this incredible structure, to emerge even

to be missed, and as far as we know found nowhere else in the world.

Activities and Wildlife Exploration Excursions
all of these activities are completely included in the price.
There is no extra charge for any of them.
Butterfly Farm: Our butterfly house is located right at the lodge, only a few moments’
walk from your cozy cabins. Here you’ll learn about the life cycles of these beautiful
insects: you’ll see them at each fascinating stage of their lives. The main, greenhouse-like
chamber is a serene oasis of tranquility where you can sit quietly while hundreds of
dazzling butterflies flutter about you. Don’t forget your camera! * A new butterfly farm is
being designed specifically to host a great variety of butterflies and plants to ensure their
sustainable growth.
Strangler Trail: This trail gets its name from the famous strangler fig (Ficus Aurea, in
Spanish “Matapalo”), a remarkable plant which grows up around another tree, choking it
in the process (don’t worry: the strangler figs aren’t interested in people!).
Chaguamango Trail: This trail begins at the lodge, winds through the dense rainforest
and ends up at the lagoon, where the canoe will be waiting for you.
Rainforest Canopy Observation Tower: It’s a whole different world up there! The
rainforest canopy is an ecosystem in and of itself. High up in the treetops, birds rule. The
observation platform of our 120 foot high (37 meters) observation tower sits on top of a
centuries-old tree, the platform offer a 360° view for world-class birdwatching (and
monkey-watching) any time of the day. As an added bonus, there are two trails from the
lodge to the tower: a 20 minute “express route” and a two-hour “scenic route.” Both
trails are great for seeing animals and medicinal plants used by locals for centuries. One
of our can’t-miss activities!
Charapa Trail: the Charapa Trail goes from the butterfly farm along a winding path that
most groups can walk in about an hour and a half. At the end of the trail, you arrive at the
lagoon, where the canoe will be waiting to return you to the lodge or explore Lake
Garzacocha. You can never tell what sorts of birds, reptiles, frogs or monkeys you might
see on this trail, so keep your eyes peeled! If you’ll lucky, you’ll catch a magnificent
Amazon sunset over the lagoon on your way back.
Parrot Clay Lick: Because of their diet, Amazonian parrots frequently need to eat salty
clay to aid their digestion. There are some of these famous “clay licks” near the lodge and
they are a favorite of our guests. On a good day, you can see hundreds of brightly-colored
birds fluttering about the clay and squawking loudly all the while.
Community Cultural Visit: Several indigenous communities live near the La Selva Amazon
Ecolodge. Our guides like to take our guests there, because the communities are always
excited to receive visitors and our guests enjoy seeing another way of life – the Amazon
way. You might visit a local home or school, see some of the projects the locals are
working on, try local foods and drinks (roasted wood grubs, anyone?) and even shoot a
blow dart gun! A highlight comes at the end of the tour, when guests have the
opportunity to purchase hand-made handicraft souvenirs directly from the people of the
community.

Somos Tailor-Made Tours
Marmoset Trail: The part of the jungle where our lodge is located also happens to be the
habitat of the rare Pygmy Marmoset, the smallest monkey in the world. There is a family
of them located not far from the lodge and a canoe ride and short walk will get you to a
place where they are often, but not always, seen. The “Leoncillos,” or “Little Lions” as
they’re known to locals, is a bucket-list sort of sighting for many of our guests.
Canoe Rides in the Creeks and Garzacocha Lagoon: Bodies of water are often the best
places to see wildlife in the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve. Our traditional, hand-paddled
canoes are the travel medium of choice on the lagoon and along the creeks that come in
and out of it. You might see a paiche (a massive fish that occasionally likes to snap at the
paddles), snakes (including the legendary anaconda), bats, any number of birds and
monkeys, and much, much more. Relaxing and fun, many guests tell us that the canoe
rides were their favorite part of their stay with us.
Sacha Hugra Trail: Our longest and most challenging trail is also our most spectacular
one. The Sacha Hugra trail goes for four to five hours through some of the only surviving
original primary rainforest in the area. It’s your best chance to see some of the larger,
more spectacular wildlife. The trees, ancient and magnificent, tower above the rainforest
floor like nowhere else: you can tell in the air that this place is old and timeless. If guests
find it challenging or are pressed for time, they can choose to do only a portion of the
hike.
Night Walk: Many of the most interesting species near the lodge are nocturnal and can
only be seen at night. Grab your flashlight and join your guide and fellow travelers on a
brief walk to see toads, frogs, insects, bats, scorpions and other varmints that are invisible
by day. A favorite of kids! Night Canoe Ride: Your guides will take out a canoe and a
spotlight onto the lagoon to try to spot some fantastic wildlife, including caimans, snakes,
bats, owls and anything else lurking around the lagoon in the darkness. They’ll try for a
clear, cloudless night if possible, because the stargazing from the center of the lake in the
Amazon night is truly memorable.
Explorer Kayaks: Many of our guests can’t get enough of the wildlife around our lagoon,
Lake Garzacocha, so we keep some kayaks handy near the dock. You can take off on your
own exploration adventure whenever you wish!
Swimming in the Lagoon: Want to take a cooling dip in our freshwater lagoon? Feel free
to suit up and jump in whenever you want: all we ask is that you let us know so we can
have someone close by to keep an eye on you.
