Welcome to the holidays at Seattle Children’s Theatre and to the wonderful, inventive
tale of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story is an adventure – just what you would expect
from a play based on a book by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Chitty Chitty
Bang Bang is the only story for children Fleming wrote, and in this adventure, the spies
are comical.
The play is so much fun and such a delight to
bring to you. It appeals to audiences of all ages with its
clever machines and inventions, exciting car races, and
improbable situations.
Underneath all this adventure, is a meaningful family
story. Caractacus Potts means to be a caring father for
When you
believe in
each other –
great things
can happen.
his motherless children, but he’s so preoccupied trying
to invent things to improve people’s lives that he ignores what’s important in his own life
– namely, his children. Left to their own devices, Jemima and Jeremy have to entertain
themselves. They find an old discarded car that once won the 1910 British Grand Prix, a
discovery that leads them into surprising new adventures.
Through a series of improbable events, the family comes together again, father,
grandfather, children and a resourceful new friend, the talented and charming Truly
Scrumptious. Genuine love wins the day, along with the knowledge that when you
believe in something – when you believe in each other – great things can happen.
Here at SCT, we’ve had a good time meeting the playful challenges of creating this
special world for all of you to enjoy. And now you’re here. The lights will dim, and we’ll
take you on a journey to find the meaning of home – by way of Vulgaria!
Happy holidays from all of us at SCT.

Synopsis
While their father Caractacus Potts is searching Coggin’s Garage for a part for one of his eccentric
inventions, Jeremy and Jemima are playing out front in a broken-down old racing car. They pretend
they are defeating the nasty Vulgarians in the 1910 British Grand Prix, one of many races this car
famously won. Potts joins his children in another imaginary race. They dream about restoring this
car to its former glory.
Truly Scrumptious drives her motorcycle to Coggins’ Garage in search of a part and nearly runs
into the old racing car. Potts offers to fix her motorcycle but Truly insists she does not need his help
and remarks on the children’s eccentric upbringing. Potts seems put off by her assertiveness, but the
children like her. After she leaves, a junkman offers to buy the old car from Coggins for 30 shillings,
to Potts’ and his children’s alarm. Coggins agrees to sell the car to them instead if they can come up
with the money.
Meanwhile in Vulgaria, the Baroness has promised the legendary car to her husband, the Baron,
for his birthday. She ordered Boris and Goran, two bumbling Vulgarian spies who are in England,
to find it. They have been spying on the garage and, excited to have found the car, set off to come up
with the money themselves.
That evening, Grandpa joins Potts and the children in their windmill home for supper. Potts
also shows Grandpa the sweet-making machine he has been working on. They discuss the difficulty
of coming up with money for the car. Later, when Grandpa tries Pott’s latest candy invention he
discovers that it makes a lovely sound. It toots! His son has invented something that works!
The next morning, Potts is full of hope that he can sell his whistling candy. He goes to the Sweet
Factory to seek an interview with Lord Scrumptious, but he has no appointment and will not be let
in. Then Truly, Lord Scrumptious’ daughter, arrives and escorts Potts and the children to her father.
Potts demonstrates his sweet new invention and all goes well until the whistling attracts packs of
dogs who rampage through the factory. No sale.
Back at home, Jeremy and Jemima offer to sell their most precious keepsakes to help buy the car,
but luckily the next morning Potts raises the money with the sale of an invention at the Fun Fair.
Potts overhauls the car, and when its transformation is complete they name it Chitty Chitty Bang
Bang after the sounds it makes when starting up.
Potts, Jemima and Jeremy take their new friend Chitty on a drive in the countryside. Truly
encounters them on her motorcycle, and they invite her along. While enjoying a picnic on
the beach, Jeremy notices the tide has come in, surrounding Chitty. A thunderstorm peals out
along with cannon blasts—a Vulgarian ship, alerted by Boris and Goran, is firing on Chitty and
demanding Potts surrender the car. Potts maneuvers the car’s instruments and Chitty amazingly
turns into a boat and floats off into the water where they elude the pursuing ship.
Hearing that Chitty can travel on water, the Baron and Baroness are more determined than
ever to learn the secrets of the car so they can make Vulgaria great once more. But upon hearing of
children in the car, the Baroness faints—she can’t even bear the word. She loathes children so much
that they have been outlawed. The Vulgarian children, hiding from the Childcatcher, are secretly
living in hiding in the sewers underneath the castle.
Back in England, Boris and Goran kidnap Grandpa, whom they mistakenly believe to be
Chitty’s inventor, and set off for Vulgaria. The Potts family and Truly pursue in Chitty who surprises
everyone as they reach the coastal cliffs—she can fly!
The Baron and Baroness welcome Grandpa as “inventor extraordinaire.” Grandpa must make
the Baron’s car work just as Chitty does. If he fails, he will be made into a sausage. Potts, Truly,
Jeremy and Jemima arrive and see Grandpa locked up in the castle. They must rescue Grandpa,
while keeping Jeremy and Jemima safe from the Childcatcher. Potts and Truly, with the help of the
Toymaker, devise a plan to surprise the Baronial couple as the birthday celebrations begin. Can
Chitty help save the family and free the children of Vulgaria?

many favorite
interests. Past

Summer Season the last three years. Beyond
the stage, she enjoys athletics of all types from
skiing to Ultimate to club volleyball. Music is a
passion she shares with her whole family and
she thanks her Mom and Dad and annoying
sisters for their support in her mainstage debut
at SCT. She hopes you really enjoy the show!
Bea Corley (Youth

to be part of her first

Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman
(music and lyrics) were born in the late 1920’s
in New York City. Following the musical career
of their father, Al Sherman, the family moved
to Beverly Hills, California, in 1937. Graduates
of Beverly Hills High School and Bard College
in New York, Richard and Robert collaborated
on many projects. The brothers’ first musical
collaboration took place in 1950, and during
that decade they wrote hit rock songs including Kitty Wells’ “Things I Might Have Been,”
Johnny Burnette’s “You’re Sixteen,” and ex-
Special Thanks
Mouseketeer Annett Funicello’s “Tall Paul.” The
latter garnered the attention of Walt Disney,
who invited both Richard and Robert to be the
exclusive staff writers for the Disney studios.
During the next decade they composed
over 150 songs that were featured in 27 films
and two dozen television productions. Theme
songs like “The Wonderful World Of Color,”
“The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room,” “Winnie The
Pooh,” “A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” and
“It’s A Small World” are recognized as Disney
standards, along with “ A Spoonful of Sugar,”
“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and “Feed
The Birds” (Walt Disney’s personal favorite.)
In 1965, the Sherman brothers won Oscars®
for their Mary Poppins score and the song
“Chim-Chim-Cher-ee.” Other Disney film
scores include The Parent Trap (1961, which
included Hayley Mills’ chart-topping “Let’s Get
Together”), Summer Magic (1963), The Jungle
Book (1966), The Happiest Millionaire (1967),
The Aristocats (1970), Bedknobs And Broomsticks (1971), The Many Adventures Of Winnie
The Pooh (1977) And The Tigger Movie (2003).
Additionally, they have composed witty
and melodious song scores for such films as
Snoopy Come Home, Charlotte’s Web and Chitty
Bang Bang, which has recently been adapted
to the stage. They also wrote scores for the
stage musicals Victory Canteen (1971), 1974’s
Broadway hit Over Here! (starring the Andrews
Sisters) and Busker Alley (1995). The Sherman
brothers wrote screenplays and song scores for
Tom Sawyer (their music won first prize at the
Moscow film Festival), Huckleberry Finn, The
Slipper And The Rose (Royal Film Performance
of 1976) and The Magic Of Lassie, from which
“When You’re Loved” earned an Academy
Award® nomination for Best Song.
To date, the Sherman brothers have earned 2
Academy Awards®, 9 Academy Award® nominations, 2 GRAMMY® Awards, 4 GRAMMY®
nominations, 23 gold and platinum albums,
and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In
1990, the brothers were named “Disney Legends” by The Walt Disney Company, an honor
they prize. Their autobiographical coffee-table
scrapbook Walt’s Time: From Before To Beyond
was published in 1999.
Mary Poppins produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Disney Theatrical Productions,

• Creative Drama for
children 3 ½ to 2nd
grade: Creative Drama
is an art form that flows
as naturally as child’s play.
Using the imagination of the
students as a guide, classes
like Story Drama, Magic
Doorway and Treasure Trunk
Theatre help children discover
new ways of using their
bodies, voices, and minds.
• Theatre Training for
3rd – 12th grade: Training
classes at SCT are fast-paced,

that develop performance
skills useful on and off stage.
SCT offers a host of acting classes as well as classes in musical theatre, physical comedy,
improv and many other aspects of theatrical arts.
• Performance Programs: SCT Drama School produces a Summer Season of shows for
student actors. Titles are announced in January and auditions begin in March. Summer Season
shows rehearse for at least four weeks. More informal studio performance opportunities take
place during Spring Break and in the summer, with a one-week rehearsal process.
• Acting Intensives and Young Actor Institute: For teens interested in pursuing a career
as an actor, SCT provides school-year intensives and the Young Actor Institute during the
summer. Graduates have gone on to perform professionally at SCT and throughout the country.
As a national leader in the field of theatre arts training, SCT Drama School enhances the
Mainstage experience. Many Drama School classes see Mainstage shows and teaching artists
create classes that tie in to those productions – like the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Winter Break
Camp. Often, actors and other artists involved in a mainstage production visit Drama School
classes. SCT Drama School is one of the ways SCT strives to allow young people to experience
the magic of theatre, in a magical variety of ways.

Seattle Children’s Theatre gratefully acknowledges the generosity of all the
corporations, foundations and government agencies that have supported
SCT in the last year. The list below recognizes contributions received
between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015.
Seattle Children’s Theatre and Microsoft
share a passion for creativity, learning
and excellence. Year after year, Seattle
Children’s Theatre delivers high quality
entertainment that captivates the
imagination, emotion and intellect of
our region’s young people and their
families. That’s why we’re proud to
sponsor the 2015-16 season.
Community involvement is an integral
part of our corporate culture at
Microsoft. We support the work of local
nonprofits and encourage employee
investment and volunteerism in the
community. A key part of our work
is Microsoft YouthSpark, our global
initiative to create opportunities for 300
million youth.
A thriving arts and cultural scene, a
network of human services providers,
and a world-class education system are
critical to the continued vitality and
attractiveness of the Puget Sound region.
Through partnerships with organizations
such as Seattle Children’s Theatre, we
aim to create an environment where the
arts will thrive for generations to come.
On behalf of Microsoft and our
employees in the Puget Sound area,
we thank Seattle Children’s Theatre for
enriching our community.
Enjoy the show!

Show Sponsor
USI Kibble & Prentice welcomes you to
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! We are honored to
once again be a sponsor for SCT’s holiday
production.
Have you ever noticed that one of the
things that makes theatre exciting is risk?
Every hero and heroine takes a chance to
achieve their goals – that’s the drama. Risk
makes story and life meaningful. As a risk
management consultant and insurance
brokerage, Kibble & Prentice has been
supporting important stories and innovation
for nearly 45 years. Through our strategic
business partnerships, financial donations,
leadership, and dedication to volunteer
work, we are committed to strengthening
and advancing the goals of our communities.
Seattle is tremendously fortunate to have
one of the nation’s leading professional
theatres for young audiences here in
our region, especially one so devoted to
reimagining classics like Chitty Chitty Bang
Bang. Kibble & Prentice is proud to sponsor
Seattle Children’s Theatre in their mission
to provide children of all ages with access to
professional theatre. Providing children with
excellent and inspiring stories today gives us
a greater hope for tomorrow, and thanks to
SCT, we are certain to have a glorious future.
We hope you enjoy the show, and wish you
all the best of the holiday season.

the various landscapes of his adventures as they sail along
to the land of the Wild Things.
