Hello Friends!
At long last winter is on its way out and we’re happy
to be returning to your area soon! We hope you
have had an excellent 2016 so far.
Extra time home over the winter meant plenty
of opportunity for buying trips to restock and it also
enabled more visiting time with artists who came
by to see us. I took advantage of the down time as
well to visit with my aunt in Yuma and brought back
some very interesting and wonderful finds from my uncle
Arvid’s shop. Apparently there were quite a few pieces of
jewelry that just needed some cleaning before being ready to put
out for sale.
Among the treasures were also some great turquoise
stones, some of which we designated to be showcased in Alton
Bedonie’s jewelry (and hopefully Bruce Hodgins in the near
future!). We had great fun in going over this exquisite collection
of stones and deciding with Alton how to best show them off in
his jewelry. As a result we now have what is probably the best
selection of men’s turquoise rings that we have had in a long
time. We also have an awesome selection of turquoise, lapis
and sugilite pendants both from Alton Bedonie and Larry Yazzie.
Naturally, Alton’s pendants include great stones from the newlyfound collection.
Alton had planned to be at the Heard Museum show in
Phoenix last month but he and his wife caught colds from their
grandchildren and were unable to attend. So, he brought us a
bracelet he made for the show and, of course, we bought it. We
also purchased a beautiful wide bracelet from Kee Yazzie which
is a little over one inch wide and has his signature design work on
both the inside and outside. Other great new necklaces include
works from both Jack Tom and Mary Tom. You’ll want to check
out several exquisite new bolos from Nelson Begay and Jack
Tom and some rings from his brother Steven Begay as well.
The extra trips to the Zuni area allowed us time to locate some
of the Zuni artists who we had lost touch with over the years and
we were able to purchase some of their jewelry. This added to
our fantastic selection of new Zuni jewelry. Edison Walela also
put a new twist on his necklace and earring sets. You’ll also see
some great new pieces by renowned Zuni inlay artists Harlan
Coonsis, Ruddell and Nancy Laconsello, Edison Walela and
Fadrian Bowannie.
Of note from our last series buying trips we discovered an
interesting three strand fetish necklace. We knew this piece
seemed special, and after doing some research we discovered
just how special; it is made up of carvings from Andrew Emerson
Quam, Lavina and Jennie Tsikewa, and Leekya Deyuse
- some of the most legendary Zuni carvers to ever put tool to
stone and shell. Be sure to get a look at this rare and beautiful
necklace!
For coral collectors there are two beautiful new coral
pendants and a Candelaria turquoise & coral pendant by awardwinning artist Vernon Haskie, and Hopi collectors will love the
three great vintage Hopi pieces we found: a rare ring by Neilson
Honyaktewa (who only made jewelry from 1948-1951), a pin/
pendant attributed to early 1960’s Hopicraft guild, and a rare half
inch wide bracelet by Steven Pooyuma – it has a snake on it
with the dinosaur tracks!
There are some great new pieces with high grade Kingman
turquoise by Geneva Apachito, Albert Jake, Darrell Cadman,
Aaron Toadlena and Darryl Becenti, some new earrings from
Alex Sanchez, and a beautiful belt buckle from
Sunshine Reeves as well as a fantastic selection
of beautiful pendants and earrings from Stone
Weaver to include a very large selection of men’s
rings (men, we hear your requests loud and
clear!).
We are looking forward to seeing all of you
and catching up on the past winter’s events. It was
a very strange feeling for us to miss winter on the
east coast this year!

POTTERY
We have an excellent selection of handmade American
Indian pottery to choose from including pieces from many of the
Puebloan groups (NM) as well as a very nice variety of Navajo
etched pottery. Stop in and examine works from Deldrick
Cellicion, Paula Estevan, Sandra Victorino, Diane Lewis,
Mary Lucero, Robert Lansing, Mike Patricio, Helen Tafoya
and Glendora Daubs as well as pieces from the classic era of
American Indian pottery.
SCULPTURES & Kachinas
Our inventory includes over ten carvings from multiaward winning artist Raymond Chee and a like number from
Laurence Dallas. These, plus dozens more are crafted from
the roots of cottonwood trees and the characters represented in
these carvings form the basis for Hopi culture.
Alabaster sculptures include some carvings from a few
Navajo artists as well as a great selection from Jemez artist
Marvin Toya.
Matt
The Native American arts world lost one
of its brightest stars in March with the
passing of Navajo/Zuni artist Myron
Panteah. Myron’s exquisite jewelry never
failed to bring amazement to those saw it.
The void left by his passing will be keenly
felt. We were blessed to have known
Myron and be counted among his friends;
his personable and fun-loving nature was
truly uplifting. We miss him so very much.
SANdPAINTINGS, RUGS & ART
Sandpaintings
Artists in Shiprock and Farmington NM were busy as usual
creating new and exciting sandpaintings. We picked up a large
selection of the smaller sandpaintings as well as about 20
boxes with sandpainted lids (think unique gifts!). Among the
great finds were also three beautiful 19”x 19”and two 15”x15”
sandpaintings by Orlando Myerson which, of course, we just
had to have. All of our sandpaintings are completely handmade,
matted and framed by Navajo artists.
