Welcome from the arena team to the LEN
European Swimming Championships!
As a long-standing technical sponsor of Europe’s governing body, arena has a keen and vested interest in Berlin 2014, and looks
forward to continuing the company’s successful partnership with LEN in this 32nd edition of the continent’s premier aquatics event.
Leading the arena charge will be 22 Elite Team athletes and 12 national federations, with 9 current world record holders among
the arena athletes contesting 42 swimming events from 18th-24th August. Among these champions will be recent world record
breaker Sarah Sjöström from Sweden, England’s Fran Halsall fresh from her Commonwealth Games triumphs, and the Hungarian
trio of Katinka Hosszú, Daniel Gyurta, and László Cseh defending the seven European titles they hold between them. Rūta Meilutytė
of Lithuania and Vladimir Morozov of Russia will be looking to add maiden European titles to their growing list of successes, while
France’s Yannick Agnel will be hoping to regain the 400m freestyle title he first won in 2010. Veteran Swede Therese Alshammar
returns to major international competition hoping to add to her 10 European titles, while fellow Scandinavian Lotte Friis from
Denmark will contest the long-distance freestyle events.
During the preceding week, from 13th-17th, the host nation’s open water champions Thomas Lurz and Angela Maurer will don their
three diamond suits in pursuit of still greater accolades, while the divers take to their boards on the same schedule as the swimmers.
For the first time at a European Championship, arena’s new Powerskin Carbon Flex swimsuit will feature alongside its “sibling”, the
highly successful Carbon Pro, while the R-Evo+ ranges will take to both the pool and the open water.
While the arena brand will be most visible through its Elite Team and federation swimmer performances in the pool, the company’s
physical presence in Berlin will be centred around its customary hive of activity – Casa Arena – where guests, athletes and friends
are welcomed into an atmosphere that is at once convivial, stimulating, and distinctive.
Naturally, ongoing updates, observations, comments, and items of interest and curiosity will pepper the social networks to keep
everyone up to date, so be sure to keep tabs on the three diamond trail for the latest in all things Euro swimming.
Stay tuned for all race results and happenings from Berlin

Hannah still trains in the same 25m pool in her home town of Inverurie where she first showed her affinity for water as

monitor and regulate the swimming stroke.

When Angela won her first world title in Rome 2009 (25km), she was the only mother in the race, and the secondoldest in the field. During her 20-year career, she has swum the equivalent of one and a half times around the world,

Sarah was just 14 when she won her first European title in 2008, and still 3 weeks away from her 16th birthday when
she broke her first world record and won her first world title. She was still too young to be familiar with protocol,
procedure, and her competitors, but has grown up quickly since – while still preserving the exuberance of youth, she
sees every defeat as a learning opportunity, and firmly believes that it’s when you’re having fun that the results come.

Berlin events: 200m back.
Radosław started swimming because he was overactive, as a way to dissipate his energy and calm him down. It was a
masterstroke, and this energy & calmness have since taken him to a World SC title along with the European title he’ll
be defending in Berlin. He has a strong work ethic – learned from his mining family – and a humility that keeps him in
his small & quiet home town of Zielona Góra by choice.
Major results: 2013 World Champs - silver: 200m back; 2012 World SC Champs - gold: 200m back; 2012 Euro

BERLIN WELCOMES
THE CARBON AND R-EVO FAMILIES
Powerskin Carbon Pro
The Powerskin Carbon Pro was launched in 2012 in anticipation of the London Olympics. The new range marked a breakthrough in swimsuit technology due
to the integration of carbon fibres into its woven textile.
Carbon Pro design & technology benefits:
Intelligent compression: The carbon thread framework locks down like a seatbelt when critical stretch levels kick in, giving maximum compression when and
where it’s needed, while simultaneously retaining elasticity and freedom of movement.
Power return: Elasticized internal tapes deliver unparalleled power, “springing back” on each dive, kick, and turn.
Improved surface integrity: With carbon’s inherent strength and stiffness, the swimsuit won’t tear or suffer surface damage when it’s stretched to the limit.
The Carbon Pro made a colourful and impressive impact in London, where arena swimmers won 10 gold, 14 silver, and 11 bronze medals, returning one of the
company’s most successful Olympics in its legacy. A year later, the Carbon Pro asserted itself as the world’s leading competition suit, with arena swimmers winning
more than half of all swimming medals – including 23 golds with three new world records – an unprecedented result in contemporary three-diamond history.

Powerskin Carbon Flex
In 2014, the carbon range was expanded with the launch of the Powerskin Carbon Flex, whose V-Flex System offers a unique set of benefits in addition to those
of intelligent compression and the power return system. By moving the seams from the side of both men’s and women’s suits, the athlete experiences greater
flexibility, particularly around the hip region.
Carbon Flex design & technology benefits:
Hip flexion and freedom of movement: Seam placement creates a “flexline” across the hip flexors, offering less resistance during hip flexion on starts, turns,
and breaststroke kicks.
Lifting effect: The rear seam creates a “tension line” between the two anchor points, limiting stretch on this line, helping to keep the legs high in the water during
freestyle, and to keep the knees from dropping during breaststroke and butterfly.
Push off the wall: During the tumble turn, the tension line also helps with pushing off the wall.
In its first major outing at an international event, the Carbon Flex returned a positive scorecard with seven gold medals from the arena Elite Team in June’s Sette
Colli Trophy in Rome - Sarah Sjöström won 100 fly (in a championship record time of 56.50, the second-fastest textile swim in history), 50 & 100 freestyle,
Katinka Hosszu 200 fly and 400 free, Ruta Meilutyte 50 breaststroke (breaking the championship record twice), and Gregorio Paltrinieri 800 free. Three weeks
later at the Swedish Nationals, Sarah Sjöström and her new Carbon Flex set a new 50 butterfly world record (24.43) as she won five titles, three in new
championship record times. At the same time in Vichy for the French Open, the Carbon Flex featured 12 times on the top step of the podium as Katinka Hosszu
won 200 & 400 IM, 200 free, and 200 back, Ranomi Kromowidjojo 50 & 100 free, Inge Dekker 50 & 100 fly, James Magnussen 100 free, Lazslo Cseh 200
fly, Marco Koch 100 breast, and Jérémy Stravius 50 back. More recently, the Carbon Flex featured in seven new Commonwealth Games records in Glasgow,
including two each by Elite Team members Fran Halsall of Team England (50 free 23.96, 50 fly 25.20) and South Africa’s Chad Le Clos (100 fly 51.29, 200 fly
1:55.07), and one for each of Cate Campbell of Australia (100 free 52.68), South Africa’s Cameron Van Der Burgh (50 breast 26.76), Australia’s Emily Seebohm
(59.37) and Canada’s Katerine Savard (100 fly 57.40).

Powerskin R-Evo+
The Powerskin R-Evo+ range is a made from a superior woven fabric created by Kinetech Labs, featuring low-profile bonded seams and providing exceptional
drag reduction and compression. Originally launched as arena’s first post-hi tech range of textile competition suits, the latest R-Evo+ generation offers the swimmer
superb stability, body alignment, and the smoothest glide through the water.
Its five-star performance and comfort has made the R-Evo+ Open Water the swimsuit of choice amongst the world’s leading open water swimmers. In London
2012, the R-Evo+ Open Water swept the men’s medals, with Elite team members Oussama Mellouli and Thomas Lurz filling the first two positions. Bronze medal
winner Richard Weinberger has since joined the arena stable. At the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, 50 out of 60 entrants in the men’s 10km race wore
the R-Evo+, with Elite Team athletes Thomas Lurz, Oussama Mellouli and Angela Maurer each picking up multiple medals – Lurz won the 25km event, picked up
silver in 10km, and placed third in 5km, Mellouli took the 5km title and the 10km bronze medal, and Maurer was second at 25km and third at 10km.
For the pool, a new style has been developed in 2014 to partner the existing elegance of the classic black suit – its electric blue and yellow flow logo makes a striking
visual statement to go with its high-calibre performance characteristics. At the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Elite Team swimmer Hannah Miley of
Scotland set a new Games record in her Powerskin R-Evo+ as she powered to the 400 IM title in 4:31.76.

Arena' s FW14 collection
social, media, style
Arena’s soon-to-be-released FW14 collection designs have been based on the concept of an “Arena social network”, using motifs inspired by images and
symbols from visual social media sites such as Instagram, Pinterest, and Flickr. The resulting patterns blend the company’s culture with modern communication
channels, dividing the range’s overall themes into three categories – I love my brand, Federations are my inspiration, and Crazy prints. Designed to be expressive,
unique, and social, and to echo the spirit of Arena along with the power of the modern community, the collection was first showcased in Prague in November
2013, featuring Elite Team members James Magnussen and Ranomi Kromowidjojo as models.Reflecting on the collection’s theme, the two champions expressed
some of their own views on the world of social media.
James really enjoys having a presence and interacting on his social media of choice – Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. His experience is that “it provides a great
way to really stay in touch with fans and supporters from all over the world and to really feel their support and interest in my career is great. It also allows you
to show more of the fun side of yourself and not always take things too seriously.” Despite the occasional user with negative comments – which he shrugs off
philosophically – he does his best to stay in touch, even when it’s difficult due to training & competition commitments. As far as the next big social channel is
concerned, he’s noticed Snapchat with its photos and videos growing in popularity, suggesting it could become even more popular in the future.
For her part, Ranomi interacts with friends and fans daily through Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as well. She likes them for their speed of communication,
and the fact that they bring her closer to her fans since she is personally interacting with them. As for future channels, she is hoping for a “social site or app
for swimmers and swimming lovers!”
