Exciting Times

“What an exciting time to be in the livestock business!” That statement sums up the
presentations I’ve attended over the past several months, and the news only seems
to get better as we move towards spring. Feeder cattle and fed cattle prices have
reached new all-time highs, market cows are in strong demand, and beef bred cow
and heifer prices have elevated compared to two months ago. The sheep market
has recovered to profitable levels, and hog futures support live hog prices into the
$70s for the summer months. Dairy cull cow sales have become a large source of
income for dairies of all sizes, and milk prices are on the rise.
Probably more important though, projections insist the next few years will provide
great opportunity for livestock producers. After two or three years of drought,
depending on your location, feed prices have dropped to more affordable levels
and many pasture conditions have improved. Exports of U.S. meat and milk are in
major demand and acting as price drivers. These opportunities continue to grow as
economies around the world recover.
Now is the time to capitalize on these opportunities. We all know weather can
disrupt a well designed plan, but how you choose to prepare and react is what’s
important. Making the most of your pasture, facility and management talents and
abilities are what make the difference.
As for Central Livestock, all four auction locations marketed high volumes of
livestock in 2013. The markets and the country direct marketing departments sold
over 550,000 head of cattle, calves, hogs, sheep, goats and horses. Your loyalty
and support to Central Livestock is appreciated. Thank you for choosing Central

In this issue of Marketings, you will find a feature article highlighting the recent
Greater Midwest Livestock Auctioneer Championship hosted by our Central
Livestock West Fargo market. Mike Hilde, West Fargo Market Manager, and his staff
did a wonderful job hosting the event. It turned out to be a remarkable day, and I
was fortunate enough to be one of the judges. It was particularly exciting to meet
so many contestants who are passionate about marketing livestock the auction way.

Selling Their Way to the Top

Two now, two now, quarter now half, now half, now seventyfive, now seventy-five, seventy-five...SOLD. Sold your way,
$2.75 on No. 935. That was a familiar sound on Saturday,
February 8 at the Central Livestock West Fargo market as 33
contestants vied for the title of Champion Greater Midwest
Livestock Auctioneer. While each contestant had their
own unique chant they all had one common goal; to sell
the stock they were presented for all they were worth.
Even though this was the first contest for some auctioneers,
they certainly all came to compete. The judges, Paul Behr, Jeff
Reed, Marion Rus, Jim Bieber and Keith Wells, had no small
task scoring each contestant on a 50-point scale. Besides
making sure each auctioneer sold the cattle for the proper value
the five judges also scored contestants on: initial command,
opening and proper use of microphone; voice quality, clarity
and auctioneer chant; appearance, poise and salesmanship;
expedition of sale and bid catching; and representation of
livestock marketing knowledge and auctioneering profession.
This year’s Greater Midwest Livestock Auctioneer Championship
(GMLAC) marked the 26th anniversary of the contest and an
opportunity to come back to where it all began in 1989, the former
West Fargo Stockyards. At the first contest there were only 23
contestants from four states, but over the years the contest has
grown. In this year’s competition 15 states and two Canadian
provinces were represented. While many contestants were veterans
of the competition, some were competing for the first time.
As Paul Behr, president of the National Auctioneers
Association, past winner of the GMLAC and judge of this
year’s contest, said, “You are far better off coming to this
contest than staying home. Nothing can be lost by competing
even if you finish 33 out of 33, you have still gained. You gain
everything from friendships, to knowledge, to experience.”
While competing can be nerve-wracking, most of the contestants
would concur this competition is about more than being
named a champion. It’s about friendships, gaining experience
and the opportunity to promote one’s self in the industry.

doesn’t make me nervous because to me it’s just another day at the
sale barn. It’s just a good time to meet some people, shake some
hands and walk away with a smile, no matter how you place.”

In the initial round each auctioneer was given
four drafts of cattle to sell, varying from slaughter
cows to feeder steers and heifers. After the four
drafts sold, judges scored each auctioneer and
once the round was over the scores were tallied.
The 10 contestants with the highest scores moved
on to the second round.
For the second round, each of the 10 auctioneers
sold four drafts of feeder cattle with lots ranging
in size from 1 to 70 head. The judges once again
scored them, and the top three contestants were
named. At the end of the day, after 33 auctioneers
sold nearly 2,600 head of cattle, one young
man, from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, walked
away as Champion Greater Midwest Livestock
Auctioneer. That man was Brennin Jack of
Heartland Livestock Services.
With no family in the auction business it took time,
patience and sheer talent for 24-year-old Brennin
to become the auctioneer he is today. His debut
in the auction ring occurred at the age of nine
and three years later he sold his first million-dollar
cattle sale. Brennin has dedicated many hours of
training to attain his smooth, rapid chant. In 2006,
he began competing in auction contests, and he
attributes his success to the guidance he received
over the years from other champion auctioneers.
Along with being named the winner of the Greater
Midwest Livestock Auctioneer Championship,
Brennin was awarded $1,500 and a customized
belt buckle. Rounding out the top three were,
Jared Miller, Lamoni Livestock Market, and
Mitch Barthel, Perham Stockyards, Inc. They
were recognized and received a customized
belt buckle. All contestants in the top 10 were
awarded a specially designed jacket and a
spot in the 2014 World Livestock Auctioneer
Championship contest. This year’s world contest
takes place June 18-22 at the Knoxville Regional
Livestock Market in Knoxville, Iowa. In years past,
10 GMLAC champions have gone on to win the
world competition, and Brennin certainly has a
chance to be added to that list.
Before the contest began Behr gave each
auctioneer a little advice, “I have been where you
are and I have a lot of respect for all of you but just
rear back and let her go. The best in the business
are going to be here so just do what you do.”
That’s exactly what all of the contestants did. They
sat back and did what they know how to do, sell
cattle as professional livestock auctioneers.
While hosting the event at the Central Livestock
West Fargo market was no small task, it certainly
came together and was a successful competition.
It was made possible by the Central Livestock
staff and producers who consigned cattle. So,
whether it was someone’s first competition or
their 10th, each auctioneer gave it their all and
worked for the consigners by selling their cattle,
the auction way.
