For example, experienced cyclists riding racing bikes tend to avoid traffic free routes because their tyres are not suited to off-road routes whilst inexperienced cyclists tend to avoid busy roads and seek to use traffic free routes that they consider to be safer. Residential streets Many of the Borough's residential streets have had traffic calming measures installed to reduce vehicle speeds and reduce road accidents. There are many 20mph zones now in existence with these streets forming elements of the Oldham Cycle Network. The long term aim would be to see all residential streets have 20mph speed limits to make these roads safer for all road users including cyclists. Main roads Main roads will continue to be an important network of routes for the more experienced cyclist. 2. This is reflected in the fact that Oldham has the lowest levels of cycling in Greater Manchester. Gremlins Cycle Centre ........................... To overcome the challenges that hills create, electric push bikes can offer a solution and help enable more people to cycle in the borough. Ranging in cost £500-£1500 and with battery capacities able to cover 15 miles and longer, these bikes can offer a relatively cheap travel option and in most cases having sufficient battery capacity to deal with a days worth of hill climbing without the need to recharge the battery. Electric push bikes can be used in the same way as a conventional push bike but with the ability to switch to an electric motor when needed. You can pedal on the downhill and flat sections of your route saving the battery to do the hard work when it comes to the hilly sections.
