Worthington United Methodist Church
The Messenger
Volume 59, Number 8
Building a more diverse and open community
of committed Christian servants.
Wow! August is here! And with it a busy schedule for many!
We invite you to bring your pets for blessing on the first day of the
month and on Sunday, August 30, we will have our Rally Day with
one blended service at 10:00 a.m. In between, school will begin
and many opportunities highlighted in this Messenger will occur.
I want you to know that in mid-August our two new nurseries will
be filled with a total of sixteen infants Monday through Friday.
The rooms are getting active use on Sunday mornings as well. Thank you for
the support you have given this project.

The response to the Circle of Grace conversations on several topics has been
wonderful and we are in the process of organizing the times for each
conversation to occur. When that is set we will advertise the listing and even if
you have not yet responded you can join in the circle.
August also brings the appointment of our new District Superintendent, Linda
Middelberg.
You can read a bit about Linda on the second page of this
newsletter. We are very fortunate to have her as our superintendent.
It was wonderful to hear from our youth yesterday (7/26) as they shared their
experiences from this summer. We thank our congregation for your support in
providing for them this opportunity. As they journey through a myriad of
challenges now and during their lives, the reality that you have supported them
in this time and place will journey with them and make an incredible difference.
We hope you will all plan to be here for Rally Day, August 30, for the 10:00
a.m. blended service. The theme for the day and the fall kick-off is Building the
Circle Wider. Building the Circle of God’s Grace and Love wider as we
build our Circles of Conversation, Influence, Acceptance, Mission, Ministry,
Study, Care . . . as we build all the grace-filled Circles in our lives wider. On
the inside of this Messenger you can read more about the day!
Thanks for your ongoing support not only of our ministry here but also around
the world, including Imagine No Malaria and emergency flooding needs of our
nearby neighbors right here in West Ohio. You build the circle wider in many
ways. Thank you.
Please read this Messenger carefully; it is packed full of opportunities and more
info on your staff that you don’t want to miss.

Next Gentle Worship Service is August 16
The Gateways Ministry Team sponsors a monthly Gentle Worship
Service the 3rd Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m. in Potter Chapel. The 30-minute service includes calming piano music, familiar
hymns, prayer, scripture and a brief message. It also includes
therapy dogs, ASL sign language interpreter, large-print bulletins
and a video screen for ease of participation.
Recent comments about the new service include:
“I like having a worship service available at 2:00 p.m.”

Mark your calendars now for the Adult Fellowship Group’s night of food trucks and corn

Capital Campaign Update
In June, we celebrated the three-year anniversary of the Capital Campaign. It’s an
important milestone and we wanted to note
the many things that have been accomplished. Several people were videotaped
noting the benefits that have resulted from
the work to date. Here are a few quotes:
“The van transports people safely, reliably
and comfortably.”
“The nursery shows that we are a church
that cares about and cares for young families.”
“The HVAC provides more comfort and uses
less energy.”
WUMC Blessing of the Animals is August 1
We welcome all God’s creatures to a brief and informal musical worship service to be held on the front lawn of Potter
Chapel on Saturday, August 1, at 10:00 a.m.
Cyndy and John will give a personal blessing and bandana
to your favorite family pet. Please bring your dog, cat, bunny,
pony, pig, hamster, gerbil, fish, frog – any critter that’s part of
your family! Invite your friends and neighbors to come along.
Come early or stay late and enjoy meeting local rescues with
adoptable animals, have a picture taken with your pet and
enjoy other activities. Tim Berridge will provide enjoyable
music before and during the service. A freewill offering of
dog food or cat food will be gratefully accepted and donated
to the Worthington Food Pantry which will enable our neighbors in need to keep their pets in their homes.
If your pet was blessed in years past, please join us again
this summer. We hope to see many of you on August 1 at
10:00a.m.! - Cathy Taylor
Next Y’All Come Choir is August 9
You are invited to join us on Sunday, August
9, at the 9:30 a.m. service for a “Y’all Come
Choir.” Everyone, from children to grandparents and great-grandparents are invited
to participate. Simply meet in the Sanctuary at 8:30 a.m. for a rehearsal. If you want
to see the music early, it will be available in
the church office on Sunday, August 2.
Have questions? Email Linda Nolan at
[email protected].

”Accessibility improvements create a more
welcoming, inviting and safe environment
for all.”
“The updated third floor is a wonderful
space to get in touch with God.”
The nurseries are occupied, the stained
glass protection is being installed and WiFi
is available throughout much of the building.
Now it is time to turn our attention to the
Commons upgrade and continue working on
the drainage issues. Thanks to the creativity of the Trustees, the work done on the
drainage at the front doors will have an additional benefit of improving accessibility
and appearance in that space.
As we work on the remaining projects, it is
important that we know the financial resources that will be available to complete
the projects. If you have a remaining pledge
amount that will be fulfilled throughout this
year or into 2016, please let us know that, if
you have not previously.
If you will not be able to complete your original pledge amount, it is important to know
that as well. If you intend to give additional
amounts, that, too, will help us plan. Please
communicate this information to Lynn
Ebright
at
885-5365
or
[email protected].
Gifts are at 92% of the campaign goal
amount of $1,187,379. Thank you to all who
are participating. – Gari Aber

New Life’s Annual Football Kickoff is September 2
Come join the kickoff festivities with a buffet and silent auction at Villa Milano on September 2 to
benefit New Life UMC’s Community Outreach ministries. Clark Kellogg, former Ohio State and
NBA basketball star and current network broadcaster, will be the guest speaker. Mindy Drayer,
Channel 4 weekend newscaster, will emcee. All proceeds will benefit New Life’s mission of feeding, clothing and providing free medical care for neighbors in the Short North and around the
city. This is a wonderful way for WUMC, a partner church, to help the New Life effort.
The event is 6:00-8:30 p.m. Ticket donations are $35 in advance and $45 at the door. Children
under 6 are free. Tickets can be purchased between services on August 16, 23 and 30. For more information
or to donate to the silent auction, please contact Louise Carle at 614-436-5234 or [email protected].
