HORROR JEFF CHURCH Shapingthe Coterie FavoriteHaunts by DaveHanson. [email protected] byBobbyHoops. [email protected] On the eve of opening another season at The Coterie Theatre, KC Stage sat down with the organization's Artistic Director, Jeff Church to discuss "multigenerational theatre," some great successes in past seasons and Mr. Church's recent election as the Secretary of the Executive Board of the Theatre Communications Group - the leading organization for non-profit theatres in the country. While the conversation was lively, it always came back to the central theme of embracing unconventionality. The Coterie Theatre has always looked to break the mold. The organization was founded as a children's theatre in 1979 with a mission, according to the theatre's web site, "to open lines of communication between races, sexes and generations." Upon that foundation, the organization sought and hired an individual uniquely suited to continue a tradition of the unexpected when Jeff Church was hired in 1990 as the Artistic Director. At the time, Church was just winding (left),ExecutiveDirectorof the Coterie, andJeff Churchreceivethe2004Missouri down a fruitful rela- JoettePelster ArtsAwardfromFirstLadyLOriHauserHolden.Photo courtesty ofThe Cotene. tionship with the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He had enjoyed success, but one thing still eluded him. While the Kennedy Center was a powerful and wonderful presenting organization, there was more that Church wanted out of the theatre. As Church suggests, "I wanted to shape a season." This desire to build season was not new to Church. He began his theatrical career as a 15-year-old in rural Colorado. He would organize the youth of his community into a company and produce whatever he could. This began a journey that Church characterizes as "apprenticing myself to the trade from the age of 15 until the present day." These early efforts not only launched Church into the theatre scene, they also gave him a lifelong love of theatre for young audiences. What he saw in The Coterie Theatre in 1990 was the opportunity of a lifetime. Many town, could vision of Van Goethe of his friends thought he was insane for taking a position in a cow but Church understood that his vision of a new kind of theater happen at this small theatre located in Halls Crown Center. That is summarized by Church as "creating a theatre where you don't Continuedon page12 Every year around the middle of September, something strange happens in downtown Kansas City. People flock to the West Bottoms district and pay complete strangers to scare the living hell out of them. Sound crazy? Yep. Fun? Hell yes. I'm talking about the haunted houses that open up annually for Halloween, nestled not-so-innocently around the 12thStreet Bridge off of Broadway. Going to a haunted house is almost a ritualistic rite of passage for any fan of Halloween in Kansas City. October would not be the same without the foggy werewolf forest of "The Beast" or that guy who sticks a rat in his mouth (!)walking around the ou tside of "The Edge of Hell" . Also well worth mentioning is my personal favorite, the "Deadly Double" (formerly "Catacombs and Fear"), also located near the 12th Street Bridge. And this year a new addition, "The Cave of Terror" in Excelsior Springs, will surely be an original experience because it is the first haunted house in the United States to be located underground in a real cave! I've been going to these things for years. As far as I'm concerned, I was not truly a man until I'd hit the bottom of the four story slide at the end of "The Beast" for the first time when I was twelve years old. But as I got older and became interested in theatre, I started to appreciate these attractions a little more. Going to one of these haunted houses is just as theatric as going to a play in many Continued onpage11 OCTOBER2004 . 3 RUNNING BREAKA LEG GAG Continuedfrom page 1 WouldI LookGoodWitha Mustache? by RyKincaid . [email protected] A motion picture came out in 1977, incorporating a timeless story with memorable characters, surprising critics with its box office success, and producing two sequels. Most argue that the second film is a far better effort than the third, but please allow me a detailed objection: Smokey and the Bandit 3 is a greater film than Smokey and the Bandit 2. The outstanding reason for my opinion is that the third film in the Trans Am-truck-police car trilogy has a simpler story than the second. The plot mimics the successful simplicity of the original movie: Big and Little Enos offer money to Bandit for a cross-country drive; Bandit drives; Sheriff Buford T. Justice and son chase. Of course, nuances are addeda plastic shark, cross-dressing Enoses, inept Klansmen- but the outline remains the same. As for the second film, "contrived" is not a strong enough word to describe its plot. Burt Reynolds and Sally Field return in their roles of Bandit and My Ass Still Looks Great to go on a run for Big and Little Enos. The run is a delivery of an elephant to the Texas governor in Houston. (I'm not sure why, but at no time in the movie does someone say, "We're going the wrong way: the capital of Texas is Austin.") Transporting the pachyderm in country singer Jerry Reed's truck, the owner of which is once again happy as hell to be doing something with his life, the crew runs into Dom Deluise speaking in a Jewish- Italian accent. The cast examines the elephant, they discover it is pregnant, Deluise delivers the baby elephant(?), and Reynolds overcomes his battle with egotism. Continued onnextpage curtain call until the last possible moment.) The origins of the first are murky (one suggests that it might have just been a good excuse when a bad dress rehearsal came about {I}),but the second comes from the feeling that the show is then' set' or 'finished', and so no further work can be done on it (2). Don't upset the make-up. All sorts of superstitions about make-up, from it being bad luck to upset a make-up box, unlucky to carry a make-up box, unlucky to use new set of paints on opening night, and that powder (if dropped) should be danced upon for good luck (2). These are just a few, and for a further exploration of ghosts, superstitions, and saints, be sure to check out the two web sites I've cited in this article. As one can dearly see, the second Smokey has fewer redeeming quali- ties than the third Smokey. However, number three has its weaknesses. Reynolds, thankfully, is not in this chapter, so Reed assumes the Bandit role by getting into the car with his own mustache. Reed is not so much happy the third time around as giddily insane: the lack of Reynolds/Field and a semi present a challenge to Reed, and his acting goes over the top and into a deep ravine. Yes, Sally Field also did not show up for 3, though one could make the case that she didn't show up for 2, either. If you're looking for something a little scarier, then I'd definitely send you to "Deadly Double". It's a ninety minute tour of some of the best horror in Kansas City, utilizing a person's natural fear of claustrophobic spaces and darkness in creative ways. However, I'm very excited to see what "The Cave of Terror" is going to have to offer. The press release promises a ride in a freight elevator into the cave, which contains thirty rooms spanning 15,000 square feet. Sign me up, I'm there. (In this movie alone, the police car runs into a milk truck, a barricade of ice bags, a flower stand, wooden planks on fire, and an active bombing range.) Come to think of it, this third one is probably the worst of the movies. Big and Little Enos, unfortunately, have their largest screen time. Written as father and son, they look the same age and find themselves once naked in their car and another time attending an orgy in full drag. Before you can remember that this film is rated PG, Jerry Reed gets out of his car late in the film and gets in to a powerboatatanudistcamp. When the filmmakers realized they didn't know why this happened, the movie ends. I think we all can agree: all three Smokey movies are full of ridiculous material that could be better executed on the Late Night Theatre stage. That's why I am going to see Mother Trucker this month and stop worrying about the reason the filmmakers did not address the irony of a homophobic sheriff played by a grossly feminine Jackie Gleason. JEFF CHURCH Continued frompage2 have to have a kid to come." This is the meaning behind the term multigenerational theatre. Each year The Coterie presents six shows. Three are for all members of the community ages 5 and up. Three are for older children, teens and adults. While many ages are targeted, Church remains committed to nontraditional programming. This commitment has brought world premieres, American premieres and some creative revivals. Plays such as VillageFable and The Wrestling Seasonhave gone to play other venues, including the Kennedy Center. Recently, Church was able to convince Broadway heavyweights Lynn Aherns and Stephen Flaherty to reimagine their Broadway show Seussical (a commercial flop on the Great White Way) for theatres aimed at the young. The process to saving Seussicalwas a long and hard one for Church. He persevered because, as he says, "the holy grail for YA theatre is to stage Dr. Seuss and do it correctly." The resulting rewrite was embraced by Kansas City audiences and is now enjoying interest and productions across the nation. The Holy Grail may have just been achieved. This kind of risk taking and the ability to see non-traditional avenues for reaching audiences has created a reputation across the metro area and across the nation. Since arriving in 1990, Church has led many efforts to raise the artistic quality and reach of The Coterie. He worked diligently with Joette Pelster, Executive Director of The Coterie, to shepherd the orga- fects of the plan. It continues a tranization through the process of be- dition that The Coterie has often coming an Equity theater.
