L ETTER F R O M T H E C H A IRM A N
Dear Palm Beach Opera Patrons:
Thank you for joining us for a weekend of fun with Donizetti’s
comedy Don Pasquale, a welcome moment of levity after the
dramatic Carmen production. I’m sure you too still have the
final duet in your minds and ears, one of opera’s greatest
confrontations of ill-fated lovers. Carmen proved to be
a wonderful artistic success, and I thank all of you for also
having turned Carmen into our biggest box-office success
of the past five years!
The announcement of our Executive Committee-led 2016
Matching Gift of $100,000 provided additional excitement to our Opening weekend. I’m happy to report
that many of you were inspired to join in this effort with additional sponsorships and contributions.
To date, we have matched about 50% of the gift. Please help us reach our target and close a portion of
our remaining 2016 financial gap.
As promised, we’ve announced our blockbuster 2017 season, which will bring you Italian passion and
British hilarity! You can find out more about the season in our General Director’s message on Page 8.
We are focusing on three key activities to close out an overall 2016 season:
- Continue broadening our membership in the Palm Beach Opera family: The Board of Directors,
Board of Governors, and the Palm Beach Opera Guild all welcome new members with fresh ideas
that help the company evolve and flourish. Please contact me or one of our staff members if you
are interested in getting more involved.
- Secure a new home for Palm Beach Opera: Some of you may know that our current office lease is
not being renewed as of July 2016. We are in the process of evaluating new office spaces, which
may turn into an opportunity to combine offices, rehearsal and production spaces all ‘under one roof’.
- Close the remaining 2016 financial gap and build future financial sustainability by increasing
our fundraising initiatives: In order for Palm Beach Opera to continue fulfilling its mission, we need
to satisfy this year’s financial needs as well as set up reserves and endowments. Opera remains
the most invigorating, challenging, and fascinating art form. Consequently, opera also requires and
deserves great financial support.
Your role and involvement is critically important to secure the future of Palm Beach Opera. As patrons and
contributors, all of you will shape the future of world-class opera in Palm Beach County. I urge you to play
a significant part in Palm Beach Opera’s success, and I hope you will encourage your friends to join you.

LE TT ER F ROM T H E G E N E R AL DIRECT OR
Dear Palm Beach Opera Friends:
I’m delighted to welcome you to our mid-season production
of Don Pasquale. The cast we have assembled for this
production is internationally known for Italian comedies, and
brings a wealth of stylistic knowledge to Palm Beach. Under
the experienced baton of Antonino Fogliani, who has made
bel canto opera his specialty, and under the stage direction
of Fenlon Lamb, who drew a hilarious Barber of Seville two
seasons ago, you will hear Donizetti at his finest!
As always in February, we are thrilled to announce your opera program for the next season. We will
open the 2017 season with Giacomo Puccini’s much beloved Madama Butterfly, one of the world’s
most produced operas for good reason: the melodies are stunning, the story heart-breaking, and the
orchestral sound, shaped by our chief conductor David Stern, will keep you on the edge of your
seat from the first to the last note. In March, you will have the opportunity to be acquainted with
Giuseppe Verdi’s curse-driven Rigoletto, an opera filled with hit tunes including the world-famous
‘La donna è mobile’. Metropolitan Opera baritone and Palm Beach Opera audiences favorite, Michael
Chioldi, who has been spearheading our past two Opera @ The Waterfront Concerts in addition to
singing dramatic Verdi roles like Macbeth, Nabucco, Conte di Luna in Il trovatore, Rodrigo in Don Carlo
and many others all over the world, will return to Palm Beach Opera to sing the title role of the
tragic jester. In April, for our comic opera of the season, we will present to you Gilbert and Sullivan’s
The Pirates of Penzance, a co-production with the Atlanta Opera. The cast is made up of noteworthy
opera singers, with the great American powerhouse mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe in the role of Ruth.
Just like Carmen this past weekend, next season’s performances are likely to sell out. I therefore
encourage you to renew your subscription promptly, and enjoy our early renewal discount as well as
choice of best seats.
We will continue our Opera @ The Waterfront concert in December, Opera Cabaret and One Opera in
One Hour performances in February, and will shortly announce also our Gala performer. The Benenson
Young Artists will be showcased in various community concerts, and we will expand our Education and
Community Engagement Programs further.
Your patronage is crucial to the success of the whole Palm Beach Opera community. I thank you
for your continued generous support, and I look forward to seeing all of you at our last opera,
Ariadne auf Naxos, in March.
Thank you for being a part of our opera family, enjoy the performance!

DON PASQUALE
ACT I. The old bachelor Don Pasquale plans to
marry in order to punish his rebellious nephew,
Ernesto, who is in love with the young widow
Norina. Pasquale wants an heir so he can cut
the young man off without a penny. He consults
Dr. Malatesta, who suggests as a bride his
own beautiful younger sister (“Bella siccome
un angelo”). Feeling his youth returning, the
delighted Pasquale tells Malatesta to arrange
a meeting at once. Ernesto enters and again
refuses to marry a woman of his uncle’s
choice. Pasquale tells him that he will have
to leave the house, then announces his own
marriage plans to his astonished nephew.
With no inheritance, Ernesto sees his dreams
evaporating. To make matters worse, he
learns that his friend Malatesta has arranged
Pasquale’s marriage.
On her terrace, Norina laughs over a silly
romantic story she’s reading. She is certain of
her own ability to charm a man (“Quel guardo
il cavaliere”). Malatesta arrives. He is in fact
plotting on behalf of her and Ernesto and
explains his plan: Norina is to impersonate his
(nonexistent) sister, marry Pasquale in a mock
ceremony, and drive him to such desperation
that he will be at their mercy. Norina is eager
to play the role if it will help her win Ernesto
(Duet: “Pronta io son”).
ACT II. Ernesto, who knows nothing of
Malatesta’s scheme, laments the loss of
Norina, imagining his future as an exile
(“Cercherò lontana terra”). He leaves when
Pasquale appears, impatient to meet his
bride-to-be. The old man is enchanted when
Malatesta introduces the timid “Sofronia”

and decides to get married at once. During
the wedding ceremony, Ernesto bursts in and
accuses Norina of faithlessness. Malatesta
quickly whispers an explanation and Ernesto
plays witness to the wedding contract. As
soon as the document is sealed and Pasquale
has signed over his fortune to his bride, Norina
changes her act from demure girl to willful
shrew. The shocked Pasquale protests, while
Norina, Ernesto, and Malatesta enjoy their
success (Quartet: “È rimasto là impietrato”).
INTERMISSION
ACT III. Pasquale’s new “wife” has continued
her extravagant ways and amassed a stack
of bills. When servants arrive carrying more
purchases, Pasquale furiously resolves to
assert his rights as husband. Norina enters,
dressed elegantly for the theater, and gives
him a slap when he tries to bar her way. He
threatens her with divorce, while she, in an
aside, expresses sympathy for the old man’s
pain (Duet: “Signorina, in tanta fretta”). As she
leaves, she drops a letter implying that she
has a rendezvous with an unknown suitor in
the garden that night. The desperate Pasquale
sends for Malatesta and leaves the servants
to comment on working in a household
fraught with such confusion. Malatesta then
tells Ernesto to make sure that Pasquale
will not recognize him when he plays his
part in the garden that evening. Alone with
Pasquale, Malatesta assures him they will trap
“Sofronia” in a compromising situation (Duet:
“Cheti, cheti, immatinente”). Pasquale agrees
to leave everything to Malatesta.
In the garden, Ernesto serenades Norina, who
responds rapturously (Duet: “Tornami a dir che
m’ami”). They are interrupted by Pasquale and
Malatesta—too late to catch the young man,
who slips into the house while “Sofronia” plays
the innocent wife. Malatesta announces that
Ernesto is about to introduce his own bride,
Norina, into the house. “Sofronia” protests she
will never share the roof with another woman
and threatens to leave. Pasquale can hardly
contain his joy and grants permission for
Ernesto to marry Norina, with his inheritance.
When Sofronia turns out to be Norina, Pasquale
accepts the situation with good humor, gives
the couple his blessing, and joins in observing
that marriage is not for an old man (Finale:
“La morale in tutto questo”).
THE BACKGROUND
Don Pasquale was declared an immediate
success after the Paris premiere in January
1843. The plot of the opera shares similarities
to that of Ben Jonson’s play Epicœne, or The
silent woman (1609); some suggest that
Jonson’s play directly inspired Donizetti’s
sixty-third opera Don Pasquale. While working
on the opera, Donizetti and the poet Giovanni
Ruffini squabbled over Donizetti’s incessant
changes to the libretto. In the end, Ruffini
refused to have his name attached to the
opera. On the original published libretto,
Donizetti used the initials “M.A.” rather
than Ruffini’s name. “M.A.” served as a
pseudonym for Michele Accursi, a personal
friend of Donizetti’s.
Interesting fact: Donizetti facetiously wrote
that Don Pasquale only took him 11 days to
compose; in reality, the work took about three
months to complete.

Siena where he studied composition with Franco
Donatoni and Ennio Morricone and conducting
with Gianluigi Gelmetti.
His debut at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro
in 2001 with Il viaggio a Reims was the beginning
of a remarkable international career. Since then
he conducted productions of Donizetti’s Ugo
conte di Parigi and Maria Stuarda at Teatro alla
Scala in Milan, Mascagni's Amica and Rossini’s
Mosè in Egitto at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma,
Lucia di Lammermoor in St. Gallen, Verdi’s Oberto
conte di San Bonifacio at Teatro Filarmonico di
Verona, Il barbiere di Siviglia at Teatro La Fenice in
Venice, and Bellini’s La sonnambula at the Teatro
Calderón de Valladolid. He conducted Paisiello’s
Il Socrate immaginario at the Teatro San Carlo
in Naples (2005; new production by Roberto De
Simone), as well as the 2007 reprise at Teatro alla
Scala in Milan.
He has conducted and recorded several titles
of Rossini (Otello, Il signor Bruschino, La scala
di seta, L’occasione fa il ladro, Edipo coloneo,
Ciro in Babilonia, La cenerentola, Il turco in Italia,
Semiramide, Adina). In 2011 he was appointed
Musical Director of Rossini in Wildbad Festival:
there he conducted the first contemporary
performances of Mercadante’s Don Chisciotte
alle nozze di Gamaccio and I briganti, Vaccaj’s
La sposa di Messina and Giovanni Tadolini’s
additions to Rossini’s Stabat Mater (for which he
reconstructed the orchestral score).
Fogliani made his American debut in 2011
conducting Lucia di Lammermoor at the Houston
Grand Opera. In 2012 he debuted Aïda at the Teatro
Regio in Parma adding to the Verdi repertoire
which he had previously conducted (Rigoletto,
Giovanna d’Arco, La battaglia di Legnano, La traviata,
I masnadieri, and I Lombardi alla prima crociata).
He opened the 2014/15 season with his acclaimed
company debut at the Opernhaus in Graz with
Guglielmo Tell, followed by Don Giovanni in Oslo,
La cenerentola in Rouen and Bern, Il barbiere di
Siviglia at Opéra de Dijon, La fille du régiment at
Palm Beach Opera, Madama Buttefly at Opéra de
Lille and at Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg,
Bianca e Faliero and L’inganno felice at Rossini
in Wildbad Festival, IX Symphony by Beethoven
with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Montecarlo
and Don Giovanni with Den Norske Opera in Oslo.
The 2015/16 season began with great successes
in Carmen for Den Norske Opera and La traviata
in Kopenhagen. Among his future plans are La
cenerentola at Den Norske Opera, La bohème
in Antwerp, Don Pasquale in Palm Beach, La
cambiale di matrimonio in Strasbourg, L’italiana in
Algeri in Toulouse, Ariadne auf Naxos in Enschede,
Faust at Houston Grand Opera and Maria Stuarda
at Opéra Monte Carlo.
In the symphonic field he has conducted the

WHY WE SUPPORT PALM BEACH OPERA
“Our family was introduced to Palm Beach Opera when our youngest daughter, Mayah,
auditioned for the children’s choir in La bohème. After our daughter participated in La bohème
we couldn’t get enough of Palm Beach Opera. They welcomed us like family. Besides watching
magnificent performances, we have enjoyed welcoming principals, attending educational
events, and participating in social events. Palm Beach Opera is now something we share with
our parents, our children, and our friends!”

PATRON SPOTLIGHT
CLAUDE & ROGER LOURIE
If you were to introduce a friend to opera, why would you encourage them to
attend the opera?
Opera is an incredible experience and we often bring our friends with us to Palm Beach
Opera productions. We believe that you cannot live without music and opera is an
experience that will move you in many ways. Everyone will be able to find something
they love in opera, including incredible artistry, lavish sets, and powerful music.
We are grateful for your support for Palm Beach Opera. Would you please share
why you support Palm Beach Opera?
Palm Beach Opera provides incredible access to opera and the power of music. We
are both life-long music lovers and believe that music is integral to the health of our
community. Our support ensures Palm Beach Opera continues to produce incredible
performances, education programs, and grow audiences for the future.
Thank you for being part of our Hospitality Committee! Why do you serve on
this Committee?
As co-chairs of the Hospitality Committee, we are delighted to support our visiting
artists, as well as the Benenson Young Artists who are the future of opera. Through
the committee we ensure the artists are happy during their time in Palm Beach, and we
also have the chance to provide a great foundation for their artistry by providing healthy
welcome bags. The Hospitality Committee allows us to connect further with the artists
and the Palm Beach Opera staff, which enhances our opera experience.
Is there anything else you would like to share about opera or Palm Beach Opera?
We are honored to be a part of the Palm Beach Opera family! We know that opera
involves many people and a lot of planning, and we are very grateful to everyone involved
in producing such incredible opera performances. Additionally, our Benenson Young
Artists are incredible and we are delighted to be able to support their residency here
in Palm Beach and look forward to following their successful careers!
