From the Pastor
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Well, this is the week of our new chapel blessing!!
It has finally arrived. This is the third time we had
set the date for the blessing and so as they say: “the
third time’s a charm.” This coming Thursday at
5:00 pm Bishop Slattery, Bishop Flores, some of
the Hispanic priests and lots of people will be on
hand to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
and attend the reception afterwards. As a matter of
fact nearly 600 people responded that they will be
in attendance. Some of our donors too will be able
to be with us and I hope we let them know how
grateful we are for their generosity to us. Once a
month we have been offering a Mass for all of our
donors and we plan to continue to do so. I am especially thankful to St. Joseph, St. Andre and St.
Toribio for praying for us through the difficulties
that we encountered in the construction of the
chapel and for helping us to arrive at this point. We
couldn’t have done it without their assistance. Feb.
25th will always be remembered in our community
not only because it is the day that St. Toribio was
martyred but also because it is the day that his
chapel will have been blessed. Of course we remember the other martyrs too who died in that difficult time in Mexico’s history and whose pictures
are on the stained glass windows. May they pray
for us in our own struggles to be ever faithful to
Our Lord Jesus Christ.
I am hoping that Father Juan Pablo will be able to
be with us this week to help us celebrate this momentous occasion. He played a big part during the
last three years in helping to get the chapel built
and even went down to Mexico to get the four tons
of stone that we used for the altar. He plans to
drive up from Texas tomorrow. Let us pray that all
works out for him.
In another week or so Padre Jose del Carmen
Lizarazo Blanco will be here to help us establish
perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. He
will be staying here from March 5th through March
12th. On March 12th or 13th we hope to inaugurate
February 21, 2016
inaugurate the perpetual adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament using our newly blessed chapel. Our
Divine Lord will never be left alone and we will
intercede for the needs of the world. The little
chapel will be a place of peace and prayer both day
and night and St. Toribio and his companions will
often be remembered as people gaze at the stained
glass windows and the painting of St. Toribio
painted by Trish Fairson, one of our parishioners.
She also painted the HIS symbol that crowns the
whole altar and reminds us that the name of Jesus
is the name above all other names and that every
knee in heaven and earth should bow at the mention of that holy name.
Let us pray that everything works out well for the
Mass of blessing and the reception to follow on
Thursday. Have a great week.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The treasures of our tradition can often be
traced to one source, but like the waters of a river
branching out on its way to the sea, are received
differently as they filter through various cultures
and customs. Long ago, mostly because of the
preparation of candidates for baptism, the annual
feast of the Lord’s death and resurrection was preceded by a period of preparation. In the West that
comes to us as Lent, a word drawn from the Old
English word for springtime, referring to the
lengthening hours of sunlight in this hemisphere.
In the East, the tradition of preparing for Easter
is received as “Great Lent,” to distinguish it from a
secondary “Lent” preceding Christmas, and a twoweek period, a kind of “pre-Lent,” that gradually
introduces the faithful to the austerities of Great
Lent. One of the major differences between East
and West is in the vigor of the Lenten fast. In Great
Lent the customs of fast and abstinence are far
more strict than we are accustomed to. For us, meat
is off our Lenten tables on Friday, but in the East,
meat disappears from the diet completely, along
with dairy products.

WE ARE TO BE TRANSFORMED
Today’s showing forth of God’s glory is filled
with a light that astonishes and reveals. Jesus
transfigured on Mount Tabor energizes even the
sleepy apostles, who see but cannot get hold of it.
They can be forgiven for not apprehending the full
meaning of this extraordinary vision of a transfigured Jesus with Elijah and Moses. The whole of
the Law and prophets is summed up here on this
mountain.
The transfiguration on Mount Tabor is handed
over to us this Sunday. As Paul reminds us, it is
we who are to be transformed. The light and life of
the Resurrection are set forth here so we do not
lose heart and fall entirely asleep. This Sunday
looks to Easter. It looks to transformation. It asks
us to lift up our heads and acknowledge the risen
Lord as our light and our salvation.

10th Annual Trivia Night

wine may be purchased so this is
an adults only event). Friendly competition with 6
rounds of trivia, raffle prizes and great food! Reservations needed by February 16th at the school

Peter & Paul School). We also need volunteers to
set up the morning of the 20th and to help during
the event. Donations are also needed for prizes
(restaurant gift cards are great!). Trivia Night has
become an annual tradition and if you have never
been you are missing out of a lot of fun and entertainment! Proceeds benefit our school’s endowment fund, which allows school improvements,
builds the scholarship fund, and helps purchase
items for our children's’ educational development.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Esta semana se llevara a cabo la bendición del Santuario!! Por fin llego el día. Esta es la tercera vez
que hemos programado la fecha para la bendición.
Este jueves a las 5:00 pm el Obispo Slattery, el
Obispo Flores, algunos de los sacerdotes hispanos
y mucha gente celebraran el Sagrado Sacrificio de
la Misa y asistirán a la recepción después. De
hecho, casi 600 personas contestaron que asistirán.
Algunos de nuestros donadores estarán presentes y
necesitamos dejarlos saber cuanto estamos agradecidos por su generosidad. Hemos ofrecido una Misa cada mes por ellos y planeamos continuar eso.
Estoy especialmente agradecido a San José, a San
Andrés y a Santo Toribio por sus oraciones por
nosotros durante todos los problemas que hemos
experimentado durante la construcción del Santuario y por su ayuda en llegar a este punto. No pudiéramos completar este proyecto sin la ayuda de estos santos. Nuestra comunidad siempre recordara
la fecha el 25 de febrero no solamente porque es la
fecha del martirio de Santo Toribio pero porque es
la fecha que bendecimos el Santuario. Claro recordamos de los otros mártires que murieron durante
esa época tan difícil en la historia de México y
cuales imágenes aparecen en los vidrios de la capillita. Que oren por nosotros en nuestras luchas a
quedarnos siempre fieles a Nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
Tengo esperanzas que el Padre Juan Pablo estará
con nosotros para celebrar este evento tan importante. El ayudo muchísimo en los últimos tres años
en la construcción del Santuario y hasta viajo a
México para recoger las cuatro toneladas de cantería que usaron para construir el altar. El planea
manejar de Texas mañana. Oremos que llega sano
y salvo.
En una semana llegara el Padre José del Carmen
Lizarazo Blanco para ayudarnos establecer
adoración perpetua al Santísimo. El quedara aquí
con nosotros el 5 al 12 de marzo. El 12 o el 13 de
marzo esperamos inaugurar adoración perpetua al
Santísimo usando nuestra capillita recientemente
bendecida. Nuestro Señor Divino nunca se quedara
solo y intercederemos por las necesidades del
mundo entero. La capillita será un lugar de paz y
de oración día y noche y Santo Toribio y sus compañeros serán recordado cuando la gente los mira
en los vidrios y también cuando miran a la imagen
de Santo Toribio pintada por Trish Fairson, una de
nuestras feligreses. Ella también pinto el símbolo
de IHS que corona el altar y que nos recuerda que
el nombre de Jesús es sobre todos los otros nombres y cada rodilla en el cielo y en la tierra debe
hacer reverencia al sagrado nombre.
Oremos que todo anda bien en la Misa de la bendición y en la recepción después este jueves.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
La Cuaresma nos llama a la conversión, a la
cual deberíamos estar dedicados toda el año. En
muchas parroquias latinas la cuaresma también es
tiempo de misiones. De niño recuerdo haber participado cada año en las misiones de mi parroquia.
Escuchábamos a los predicadores con curiosidad,
ya que aparecían solo una vez al año y luego se
regresaban a lugares lejanos y desconocidos. Nunca imagine que algún día yo también estuviera como predicador de misiones. Me gustaría darles un
resumen del mensaje que he sembrado en varias
parroquias.
Las misiones no son para repetir doctrina, sino
para evangelizar a los bautizados. Con cinco temas
se puede evangelizar a los bautizados recordándoles los cinco puntos claves del Evangelio cristiano:
1) Dios nos ama y nos hizo para él; 2) Nosotros
hemos pecado y sufrimos las consecuencias; 3)
Dios nos manda a su Hijo para librarnos del mal;
4) Jesús desea formar parte de nuestras vidas personales, ¡invitémoslo! y 5) Jesús llena nuestro corazón con el poder y la presencia de su Espíritu.
Este mensaje es uno de conversión y esperanza.
