PTO News
I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the
volunteers who helped with the Spring Fling Art Walk. From
the class projects to decorating the hallways with student’s
artwork the evening was a success.
Planning for this year’s carnival “Under the Big Top” is
well under way. If you are interested in volunteering at the
Carnival and would like to help plan, come to the planning
meeting on Monday May 3rd at 6:00pm in the conference
room.

on Friday, June 4th, from 5:30-8:00pm.
Tickets will go on sale the week of the
Carnival in front of the school. Watch your child’s backpack for more
information.
As always, volunteers are needed to make this event a success.

The next PTO meeting will be Monday May 3rd at 7pm in the library. We will
be voting in our new board members and discussing next year’s PTO events.

Nominations and Elections for PTO Secretary, Treasurer and Volunteer coordinators will be on May 3th during the PTO meeting at 7:00pm.
Duties of the Secretary:
aRecord the minutes of all meetings of all McCornack PTO meetings and its Executive Board.
aHave a current copy of the by-laws.
aPost minutes of McCornack PTO meetings in the next newsletter.
aConduct the correspondence of McCornack PTO. aPerform such other duties as may be delegated.
Duties of the Treasurer:
aReceive and pay all monies of McCornack PTO and keep an accurate record of receipts and expenditures in accordance with the budget adopted by the PTO.
aPlace all monies in a financial institution approved by the Executive Board.
aChecks are to be signed by the Treasurer and one other duly elected and authorized officer.
aBe prepared to present a written financial statement at every McCornack PTO meeting and at other times as requested by the Executive Board, making a full report at the May meeting.
aProvide all financial records to the Auditing Committee and to the school district auditor when requested.
aBe responsible for completion and filing of appropriate forms as may be required by IRS regulations no later than the date established by those regulations.
aThe treasurer shall be a member ex-officio of the Ways and Means Committee and all other fundraising committees.
Duties of the Volunteer Coordinators:
aAt the beginning of each school year a questionnaire and information packet shall be sent home to families to solicit interest in volunteer opportunities.
aCoordinate with principal for a volunteer training in the fall.
aCompile information for criminal background check of volunteers for the school office.
aOrganize volunteers for; class room liaison, certified/classified luncheons, and other PTO activities where volunteers are needed.
aOther duties as needed.

Dear McCornack Parents and Families,
Since the start of my service to the McCornack community four years ago (and our district 14 years ago) our state, school district and school are facing the
bleakest financial times, directly impacting our school program. With determined hearts, the staff and I have been simultaneously shaping our program for
2010-11 as we continue our focus on the achievement of the students we currently serve. Though it is tempting to reach for a more hopeful financial outlook for
our school district, sugar coating this situation will not benefit our students. Honesty, preparation and determination will be our allies as we plan for the future.
Adaptability in structure will serve our students best. It is possible that students will return in the fall to adjusted staff and grade level configurations,
rearranged to better serve unexpected enrollment and needs at certain grade levels. Throughout the year we have been examining student achievement and
class and grade level sizes, student strengths and needs, and considered multiple proposals given the allocated resources. The following is our tentative
staffing plan:
Kindergarten---3 sections (2 AM and 1 PM)
Grade 1---------2 sections
Grade 1/2-------1 section
Grade 2---------2 sections
Grade 3---------3 sections
Grade 4---------3 sections
Grade 5---------3 sections
Counselor------30 hours/week (supplemented from District Equity and Title I)

The loss of Physical Education is a significant and unwelcome change for McCornack. Due to lack of resources, across the district loss of P.E. and music
instruction by certified teachers is being felt. It is my intention to work with the staff, school and business community to garner resources to increase the
number of physical activities for our students in and out of school. This year we have continued unicycling through parent/staff volunteerism, held a successful
McCornack Jog-a thon, and Jump Rope for Heart campaign. I have confidence that if we reach out to our business and local community, we will be able to infuse
regular physical opportunities for our students.
As we begin wrapping up the year, the staff will begin the process of class placement. During placement meetings, we will look at strengths and needs of
students and work to create diverse, heterogeneous class groupings. Though we ask that parents refrain from requesting individual teachers (for equitable
placement), parental input is welcome in this process. Our McCornack Parent/Student Handbook (also available on our website) has a description of the
process and timeline. Information parents want us to consider about their child must be submitted in writing on a Student Placement Information form available
in the office on April 26th and is due by May 7th. Please take a moment to review our process and the revised timeline (enclosed) and feel free to call if you
have any questions.
McCornack also bids farewell to a number of retiring teachers -- Mark Olson (Grade 3), Holly Richardson (Grade 3), and Sally Dierenfeld (Grade 2). I would
like to wish them well with style so please check out the special insert about these three teachers. We will miss you and thank you for the decades of teaching
students!
As a parent and educator, I can safely say that every year of learning for our children is a pivotal year. I will continue to advocate for instruction and a program
that will offer 21st Century opportunities, building upon students’ technological and global competencies. We are currently exploring on-line Mandarin and
Spanish instruction, international sister school partnerships and community connections in pursuit of our on-going commitment to build a 21st Century school.
If the Federal Foreign Language Acquisition Program Mandarin grant is available next year, our school will continue the conversation about applying and enriching
our resources and program. We are determined to focus our energy around what is important -- high academic achievement and a sense of social responsibility.

“Willy Wonka,” will be performed on Thursday,
May 13th, Friday, May 14th, and Saturday, May 15th,
at 7:00pm in the McCornack gym.
The show is free and seating is first come, first
served. No one will be seated before the doors open at 6:30.
Due to the popularity of the show, please be mindful that the gym will be very
crowded so your patience and understanding will be much appreciated.

The final days of preparation on being made for “Willy Wonka”.
The stage went up on April 17 and 18. Performances will be May 13, 14,
and 15. There are so many people who work behind the scenes to make this
production possible. My thanks goes out to all who have helped in many different ways. Karen Olsen sacrifices many hours to help students reach their
potential and, with the amazingly talented students, each musical is a jewel.
Say thanks to so anyone that you know who works to make this
musical possible.
In the last newsletter, information was given out concerning the
in class talent shows that are scheduled for May 20 and 28. Information is
being sent home so that your child may participate. I am looking forward to
seeing many young artists perform in May.

A Good-bye to Dear Friends
We asked our four retiring staff members to look back on their career
and share with us a few things they learned along the way.

]How many years have you been working as a teacher? In Eugene 4j?
35 total, 5-years in Nebraska , 5years Astoria. Moved to Eugene in 1985. McCornack - 1 year, 3 years at Westmoreland, 8 years at Edgewood,
14 years at McCornack
]What was the reason you pursued working with children?
I was encouraged by my third and fourth grade
teacher. I also worked as camp counselor and summer camps. I enjoyed it so much that I knew it was what I
wanted to do.
]Describe the best thing about your career as an educator?
I love working with kids and seeing their eyes light up with excitement. The best thing is the
enthusiasm of kids wanting to know more about their world and the moments when you are helping them be creative in some way. At Edgewood I worked with
students on Oregon Trail plays, art and writing. I was inspired that kids developed their skills beyond the basics.
]Describe a memorable moment you have had with a student.
Kate liked writing, though sometimes struggled with it. At one point in the year she worked
hard to write this amazing poem that was published in the Young Writer’s Association Up Starts. An Edgewood parent wrote me a letter when his son became
and Eagle Scout that said you are one of the reasons he made it to that point.

]How many years have you been working as a teacher? In Eugene 4j?
19.5 years total -- 12 years in 4j -3 of those years as a Special Education teacher with both mildly handicapped and severely handicapped students
in grades K-5. Have taught grades 2, 3, and 4 as a general education classroom teacher.
]What was the reason you pursued working with children?
I knew I always wanted a job teaching. I wasn’t
able to attend college out of high school so I worked full time and attended night school, working towards my
teaching certificate when I was 28. I completed my undergrad and teaching requirements in 10 years and then
pursued my Masters at the U of O in Special Education.
]Describe the best thing about your career as an educator?
Mrs. Casado, Mrs. Richardson and
Mrs. Hove
The love you get form children every day. They teach me every day not to take life so seriously
and that there is always something to learn.
]Describe a memorable moment you have had with a student.
Last year, I received an email from a former 4th grade student who had graduated from high
school and was in the workforce. This girl had taken the time to search me out via email. She wanted me to know how much she appreciated having me as her
math teacher. I remember this girl and her struggles with confidence. She told me that I was the best math teacher she ever had and that now that she was
working she understood the importance of an education and thanked me for all I had done for her. I kept this letter and know that I was meant to teach.
This is just one story. Thankfully, in retirement I will have many stories to tell and remember. I have been extremely fortunate to have had this job and am
thankful for all the joy it has brought me.

Early experience helping out at the YMCA
with gymnastics with younger kids….I enjoyed helping them.

Getting to spend my whole day and career
with children.
]Describe a memorable moment you have had with a student.
Naomi taught me a lot about courage… she had a disability that made her limbs immobile, yet
she had great confidence, poise and personality.

]How many years have you been working as custodian?
25 years in the district
]What was the reason you pursued working in our schools and with children?
I have always been good with
kids. I had my own children, was coaching, really enjoyed time with kids. I took the job because it was a good one.
]Describe the best thing about your career?
I had one boy here that I met who was in 4th grade. I checked in
with him when I saw him in the hallway. Over the years, we developed a trusting relationship, became friends with
the family, was even invited to the family’s home for dinner. The teacher asked me if I could stop by and connect
with him. When he was a 5th grader, he asked me to stop by and speak on his behalf. He was running for class
president. We talked at every lunch and stayed connected. Many years later, I saw his dad who thanked me for
how I connected with his son who was then in college. It made me feel good!
]Describe a memorable moment you have had with a student.
A girl came to me, very sad that her parents
were getting divorced. I told her that I would try to connect her with someone who could help her, a counselor. I felt bad that she thought that she wasn’t going
to see her parents. I tried to reassure her and connected with her as much as I could in the hallways and at lunch. She is in middle school now and I hope it
helped.
Haiku Contest Winners!
5th grade teacher Karen Olsen sent a number of haikus written
by her students to the Asian Celebration Haiku Contest in February and was
pleased to be notified in April that several were chosen to be published in
“Skipping Stones,” an international multicultural magazine.

Desde el inicio de mi servicio a la comunidad McCornack hace cuatro años (y nuestro distrito hace 14 años) de nuestro estado, distrito escolar y la escuela se

La pérdida de la Educación Física es un cambio significativo y anacrónico por McCornack. Debido a la falta de recursos, a través de la pérdida distrito de PE y la
música de instrucción por maestros certificados se está haciendo sentir. Es mi intención de trabajar con el personal, la escuela y la comunidad empresarial para

April:
Notice sent home regarding school placement procedure. Parent input forms available in the front office upon request
Early May:
Parent input forms due in the front office. Parents can share their ideas about class placement with McCornack staff. To do so you must write your opinions on a special form called (in English): Parent Input Forms. These forms are available in the front office. Your opinions about your child’s learning style, academic needs, motivational needs, social skills, special
strengths or needs, and age are most helpful for school adults to make the best decisions about class and teacher placement for your child.
Mid-May:
Teachers begin to create balanced, tentative class lists
End of May:
Current teachers and principal review parent requests and re-balance class lists, making minor changes if needed
June:
Final copy of class lists sent to sending teacher and principal.
August:
Parent/student communication about next year’s class placement
Teacher’s
First Work Day:
Prior to the first day of school for students, teachers receive updated class lists.
McCornack staff values parent input. Parents provide valuable insight about characteristics unique to their student. We will continue the opportunity for
parents to give the school any information about their child they feel would be helpful to us as we make decisions about placement. Information parents want us
to consider must be submitted in writing to the office in May using a Student Placement Information form. Forms will be available in the office in April.
We are requesting that parents not request a particular teacher, providing the most flexibility needed to balance classrooms and create the best learning
environment for each child.

We Have a Winner!
Kira Wilson, a second grader in Mrs.
Davies’ class, won first place in the K-2 grade
category for the Oregon Humane Society’s 61st
annual “Be Kind to Animals Poster/Story Event.”
There were 4700 other entries, making this
award even more special for Kira.
Mrs. Davies’ class submitted posters and stories to the Humane
Society’s 128 judges as part of their Project Based Learning work which is
focusing on responsible pet ownership.
Kira, her family and Mrs. Davies have been invited to an A’Cat’emy
Awards dinner in Portland to celebrate the top winners. Congratulations
Kira, we are so proud of you!
Project Based Learning at McCornack
Some of our primary classes have been working with our Project
Based Learning Consultant, Michelle Swanson, who has connected them with
students at Churchill High School to partner on a project with Greenhill Animal
Shelter.

Deberes del Tesorero:

Políticas acerca de cómo los estudiantes son seleccionados para cual maestro el próximo año son enviados a casa.

Durante el mes del Mayo, los padres pueden escribir sus opiniones en un formulario llamado (en Inglés):Parent Input Forms. El formulario está disponibles en la oficina. Sus opiniones sobre el siguente sera mas util para los maestros y la directora: El estilo de aprendizaje del niño, el sexo, y edad del niño,
las habilidades y los desafios académicos, lo que motiva al niño, cómo su niño se relaciona con otros, y otros habilidades y desafios.
Mediados de Mayo: Los maestros y la Directora empiezan a crear clases para el año nuevo. Los maestros usan muchos criterios escolar para crear clases que son iguales y equilibrado.
Finales de Mayo:
Los Maestros y la Directora revisan las peticiones de los padres y despues vuelven a balancear la lista. Haciendo todos los cambios
necesarios.
August:
La copia final de la lista de estudiantes es enviada a la maestra correspondiente. Ella se encargara de mandar la lis ta a los padres en con el aviso junto con el reporte de notas.
Mediados de Junio: Los padres y los estudiantes son comunicados de los resultados. Estos resultados les avisa quien sera su maestra el proximo año. Este informe estara en el reporte de sus notas y sera enviado el ultimo día de clases.
Primer Día de Trabajo Para
los Maestros: Un día antes de comenzar la escuela, los maestros reciben la lista final y precisa.
La escuela McCornack valora la información de los padres. Los padres proven información muy valiosa acerca de las caracteristicas unicas de sus estudiantes.
Continuaremos dandoles la oportunidad a los padres para que nos informen los puntos importantes acerca de sus hijos/as.y de esta forma ponerlos en el lugar
adecuado. La información que los padres envien debera ser enviada en el mes de Mayo y deberan usar la forma adecuada. Estas formas estaran en la oficina de
la escuela al principio del mes de Mayo.
Le pedimos a los padres que por favor no hagan pedidos de sus maestros favoritos. La razon es que nececitamos mantener un balance en todas las clases y de

of South and Central American music performed by
Mr. Bercerra, our Artist in Residence.
Samuel Becerra, our Artist in Resident, is teaching McCornack kids

The measure would prohibit repaying the state bonds by raising
property taxes. Rather, it would dedicate 15 percent of state
lottery revenue to the school capital matching fund to repay state
funds provided to districts. According to the state voters’ pamphlet statement*, the measure would have no financial effect on
either state or local government expenditures or revenues.

Measure 68 would broaden how Oregon school districts can
use bond proceeds. Districts could use voter-approved bonds
