Breakfast at the hotel.
Valdres Traditions B, L, D
Those who are interested may be able to take part in the "stølsflytting",
walking the cattle home from the mountain farms, like our ancestors did
in the old days. The “stølsflytting” is actual walking on gravel roads for
many hours, in a slow speed decided by the cattle. The walk traditionally
ends up at the farm in the valley. If the actual walking can’t be done, visits to
different mountain farms will be arranged, where participants may join in farm
activities such as milking, making cheese and other duties.
Details are still being arranged and the exact activities of the day will be
confirmed at a later date.
Return to the hotel, relax.
Dinner tonight is a “Valdres buffet” featuring delicacies from the Valdres area.
Tonight’s program is Valdres night, in the old style, with folk music and dance.
Friday September 4 Area sightseeing and Lake Bydin boat trip
Breakfast at the hotel.
B, L, D
Today’s guided excursion will include coach tours of West Slidre, Vang and East Slidre and the old
steamer "Bitihorn" from 1912 on Lake Bygdin in the Jotunheimen mountains. You will see mountains,
glaciers and perhaps even reindeer, and meet the Mayors of West Slidre, Vang and East Slidre.
(Due to capacity on the old steamer, we will be divided into 2 groups.)
Group #1 goes up West Slidre and Vang, with stops at the Slidre
church, the Vang rune stone and the Øye stave church, ending up at
Eidsbugarden in the west end of Lake Bygdin. Lunch at the
Fondsbu Hotel, followed by a 1 hour 45 minute voyage with the
old steamer. At the east end of the lake, a bus is waiting to bring us
down East Slidre with a stop at the Hegge stave church, returning
to Fagernes.
Group #2 will do the trip in reverse. Begin with a trip up East Slidre, stopping at the Hegge stave
church, to the east end of Lake Bygdin. Embark the old steamer for the 1 hour 45 minute voyage.
Disembark at Eidsbugarden at the west end of the lake for lunch at Fondsbu Hotel. Continue by bus to
Vang and West Slidre, with stops at the Øye stave church, the Vang rune stone and the Slidre church,
returning to Fagernes.
Warm dress is required, as it is September! However, perhaps we’ll
have a nice surprise with warm weather!
Enjoy a special dinner at the hotel, followed by the evening
program featuring Modern Valdres, with lectures and young
entertainers.
Saturday September 5 Agricultural Day B, L, D
After breakfast, enjoy a guided town walk through Fagernes (150 years old in
2007!) to the annual "Landbruksdagen" at the Valdres Folk Museum. This is a
Valdres farmers’ market with food samples, arts and crafts and other products, a
cattle show, exhibit of old and new tractors and machinery, and more. Guided
tours of the museum will be offered featuring with the new exhibition building,
café, old open houses, the pioneer log house from Iowa and more. Time available
for shopping in Fagernes.
Dinner and evening program will feature a Viking theme
with tours on the lake in viking ships, viking games, and

rune stone. Enjoy a service in the Høre stave church, which dates back to
around 1180. Pilgrim procession to the church, with a Stevne procession back
