ONE CONTRADICTION METER, Vienna, 2006
Intervention related to an overall art-in-the-public-space project, "FISCHERSTIEGE alter ego", Vienna.
"Ein Meter Widerspruch" is a five-week project by Gertrude Moser-Wagner in cooperation with the Turkish tailor shop of
Halil Coban, located on Fischerstiege, a narrow alley in Vienna's Inner City. Participating visitors can ask Mr. Coban to cut
off one running meter from black or white rolls of fabric printed with the word "Widerspruch" (contradiction or objection).
They may take them home, at a price of 2€, and as a trade-off they leave their names with a written or pasted-in "contradictory" text or phrase in a notebook-for instance, a slogan that they find truly objectionable. The length of the fabric roll
totals 230 meters, which corresponds to the linear distance from the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance to
the Memorial Room for the Victims of the Austrian Struggle for Freedom, both located nearby. The project has a procedural
design, the texts noted down being continually photocopied and exhibited, resulting in an "incorrect column" of more than
180 slogans for the final installation. Apart from that, the project's website www.fischerstiege.mur.at collects numerous personal photos of contradiction meters which are being released into the public space at the end of the project.

Situated in the cradle of these old mountains, human-built structures give way to the forces of time and weather.
No need for clocks; cows come to the field and graze each day. The pace of snails and the habits of bees are knowable
here. Chronos rules this place, and when I was there he moved me to investigate both intervalometer and animation
processes, allowing for a deconstructed study of time through the moving image. LR

The Upside Down Schrattenberg Castle Project

You raise the castle, rotate it 180°.
Place it onto the big meadow over there. And that's it.
A new form now stands in front of you.
A basis for something new you might have always dreamt of.
After placing the castle upside down, it will soon become a rich source for all kinds of representional experiments:
-hobby-painters will use it in their landscape paintings;
-photographers and videoamateurs will be keen of it;
-contemporary artists will invite other artists due to invite other artists to make a performance out of it;
The following are some suggestions on how to use the upside downcastle:
-reproduced as little objects (manifactured in various materials), it will be loved by
kids; as a printed image (icon[1]) on t-shirts, it will be an assured attraction for tourists.
Whether this unavoidable marketing will be distructive for the project and the related concept of a grassroots
democracy, remains an open question that's not of secondary interest.
[1] This is not the place to contribute to the current discourse about how far the iconism has developed as a nouvelle vague of the abstractedpost-Fordism social consciousness' self representation…although this is a crucial point.

each other. One day you wake up, you look out of the
window, it's a sunny day, a grassroots
democracy germinates, fathers treat their grown up
sons at last as grown up men.
Art cannot avoid aesthetics just because formalization belongs to its essential being.

Por treinta monedas (Für dreißig Taler)
Wachstischdecken, gefüllt mit Stroh und Geldstücken
Ausgangsbasis der Arbeit “Por treinta monedas” ist eine Tradition in katholischen Ländern, nämlich die Verbrennung einer Judasfigur am Karsamstag. In meiner Heimatstadt Valparaíso in Chile wiederholt sich diese
Tradition jedes Jahr. Die Kinder sammeln alte Kleidungsstücke, um daraus eine Judasfigur zu machen.
Außerdem erbetteln sie kleine Geldstücke. Zusammen mit Stroh dienen diese als Füllung für die Figur.
Am Karsamstag werden nun diese Judasse aufgehängt und verbrannt. Beim Verbrennen fallen die Münzen zu
Boden und werden, wenn sie erkaltet sind, von den Kindern aufgelesen.

Democracia
Wachstischdecken, Holz, Schnur
Die Arbeit Democracia gehört zur weiblichen Judasfigur am Ausstellungsort, bevor diese verbrannt wird. Sie
besteht aus zusammenfaltbaren, dreibeinigen Hockern, die mit Wachstischdecken bespannt sind. Das Holz für
die Beine stammt aus dem Wald rund um Schrattenberg. Diese Hocker erwarten anstelle von auf ihnen sitzenden
Personen zusammen mit der Judasfigur die kommenden Ereignisse, nämlich das Urteil des Volkes, die Figur zu
verbrennen.

Streifzüge durch Dörfer, Felder, Wiesen und Hügel und verirrten sich auf Waldlehrpfaden, um ihren Blick auf
Landschaft zu erforschen.

‘Holiday Pictures project’ is a documentation of a possible vacation. It is an
attempt to escape. It follows ‘a desire’ for a day trip along the middle-east
coastline; starting in Syria, Lebanon, Israel and ending up in Gaza Palestine.
In spite of political difficulties and differences, the participating artists
e-mailed photographs from their country’s part of the coast. The photographs
were edited to a movie. An animated ‘tourist’ was inserted into the still images
from the coast.
The movie serves as the story line for the ‘Holiday Performance’.
The performance; 25 min, is a trialogue between two videos and live
performance by Anat Stainberg.
