These days of many economic and political
problems and stress, polls of opinion abound. In this
Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus wants to probe on him for
the purpose of teaching us.
En estos días de tantos problemas económicos y
políticos, todos los días surgen nuevas encuestas
de opiniones. También en el Evangelio de este
domingo, Jesús quiere hacer un sondeo, como le
llamaríamos hoy, de “opiniones”, pero como
veremos, con fines no políticos, sino educativos.
“...when Jesus reached the region of Cesarea of
Flilipo” Mt 16:13, at a quiet moment Jesus directs
the question to the Apostles …”Who do the people
say I am?”
“...cuando llego Jesús a la región de Cesarea de
Filipo” Mt,16,13, en tranquilidad y en armonía, les
hace a los apóstoles una pregunta muy íntima.
“¿Qué dice la gente por ahí de mí”?
Their answer is considerate and tactful: “Some say
John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah
or one of the prophets” Mt 16:14. They knew what
other people were saying about Jesus: that he was a
drunkard and liked to eat and broke the Sabbath, but
chose to tell him only the nice comments people
made. How considerate and tactful humble people
can be! A gesture to imitate.
Los apóstoles fueron muy delicados, fueron
educados, tuvieron un detalle muy bonito con
Jesús. Le dijeron: “todos dicen maravillas de ti, que
eres un gran profeta, que si es Juan Bautista que
ha vuelto a la vida, que si eres Elías Mt 16,14.
¡Atención! Ellos sabían que la gente decía también
del Señor que era un comilón, era un endemoniado,
que era un sacrílego porque curaba en sábado”.
Sin embarazo no le dijeron nada desagradable, sino
nada mas que las cosas agradables. ¡Cuánta
sensibilidad encontramos a veces en la gente
sencilla, un gesto digno de imitar!
Then Jesus said: “But who do you say that I am?” In
other words “How do you see me?” Peter, inspired
by the Holy Spirit, proclaims: “You are the Christ, the
Son of the living God!” That is Peter’s act of faith, to
which Jesus responds: since you tell me who I am, I
tell you who you are: “Blessed are you Simon, son of
Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to
you. And so I say to you: You are Peter, and upon
this Rock I will build my church and the gates of the
netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give
you the keys to the kingdom of heaven; and
whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in
heaven. Mt. 16-18-19.
Y entonces Jesús les dice: “Y ustedes, ¿Quién
dicen que soy yo?”, en palabras más sencillas,
“¿Cómo me ven ustedes a mí?” Como ves en una
pregunta más personal, y Pedro inspiradó por el
Espíritu Santo le dice: “Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de
Dios vivo”. Es un acto de fe de Pedro. Y Jesús le
dice a Pedro: “ya que tú me has dicho quien soy yo,
ahora te digo yo a ti quien vas a ser tú. Tú eres la
Roca y sobre esta Roca edificaré mi Iglesia y a ti te
daré la llaves del Reino de los cielos, lo que ates en
la tierra quedara atado en el cielo …” Mt 16,18-19.

held at our parish on Wednesday,

MARTIN VALVERDE IN CONCERT
The Spanish TV Ministry “Verbo y Vida” will host a
concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 17 at
St. Isidro Church, 2310 Martin Luther King Blvd.,
Pompano Beach, to celebrate Martin Valverde’s 30
years as a musician serving and singing for the
Lord.
This praise and worship concert will be a great
blessing for all those attending. All are welcome to
attend. Admission: $20.00.

A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
September 11
In order to remember the 10th
anniversary of the September 11
tragedy, the Knights of Columbus Color
Corps will assist at the following
Masses: 11:00 a.m. in English and
12:30 p.m. in Spanish to honor the
memory of the fallen heroes who gave
their lives to save others.
A blood drive to help save lives in our community
will also be held. This is an opportunity for all
parishioners to come together as the “Body of
Christ” to make this day a day of service and giving.

CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
is a process that welcomes new
members into the Church and

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

Jesus asked two probing questions: “Who do people say that the Son of Man is? And “Who do you say I
am?” The Apostles will discover the answer to these questions “little by little” with the help of the Holy Spirit,
who Jesus is; some based on their own strength like Judas, will never get to find out; other disciples will
abandon Jesus when he declares: “I am the Bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this Bread
will have eternal life” Jn 6:51. After this many of the disciples left and did not go with Him.
There is no “half way” with Jesus. For many of 21 Century see him as a philosopher, a prophet, a good
person, a teacher of many spiritualities, but none respond to the original question: Who do you say I am. It
took Peter several “conversions” to realize that Jesus is the Way and the Truth and the Life, Christ our
Savior.
At Communion time ask yourself the question: “Who are You Lord, for me?”

SAINT OF THE WEEK — Saint Monica
Monica was born into a Christian family in the year 331 in Tagaste (Africa). She opened
herself to prayer and to being charitable, but was an enemy of luxury and feasts. She use
to say: “My husband will be Jesus Christ.” Her parents gave her in marriage to a young
pagan of noble origin called Patricius. He was a man of rude character, irritable, and
indifferent to any religious ideas. Step by step the prudent wife touched Patricius heart and
transmitted to him her Christian faith.
Monica had two sons and a daughter. The daughter and her youngest son were Monica’s consolation.
Augustine, the elder, was the one who gave her the most trouble and suffering, for his vicious and
licentiousness, but mainly for practicing in the sect of Manichaeism.
But God always hears the prayers of a mother. In her dreams, Jesus would say: “Your son will not be lost,
where you are, he will be with you.”
Augustine went to Carthage to study Rhetoric, then to Rome, where he knew Bishop Saint Ambrose, who
was instrumental in his conversion and baptism at age 33. When they were preparing to return to Africa, in
the city of Ostia, 4 leagues from Rome, his mother felt weak and she said: “Why live any more? God has
heard me. You are a Christian already.” He infirmity lasted nine days. In November 387 she died, at the
age of 56. the church celebrates her memory on August 27.

“Con Jesús no hay medias tintas”. Como en los tiempos de Cristo, muchos lo ven en el siglo XXI como un
profeta, como una persona buena, como un filósofo, o maestro de una de las diferentes espiritualidades,
pero eso no define la pregunta que Jesús nos hace a todos: ¿”Quien dices tú que soy yo”? Pedro tuvo que
convertirse muchas veces, para reconocer el camino, quién era la Verdad, y sobre todo, quién era la Vida
Eterna, Cristo, nuestro Salvador y Redentor.
Hoy cuando recibas la comunión pregúntate delante de Cristo: “¿Quién eres tu Señor, para mí?”
SANTA DE LA SEMANA — Santa Mónica
Mónica nació en Tagaste (Africa) el año 331 de familia cristiana. Mónica era dada a la
oración, caritativa, enemiga de lujos y fiestas. “Mi esposo – decía - será Jesucristo”. Pero
sus padres la casaron con un joven pagano de noble cuna, llamado Patricio.
Era un hombre de carácter áspero, irritable, indiferente a toda idea religiosa. Fueron años
de oración y de humildad, de paciencia hacia el esposo despótico. Pero poco a poco el
amor de la prudente esposa llego al corazón de Patricio y le transmitió su fe cristiana.
Mónica tenía dos hijos y una hija. Esta y el menor fueron el consuelo de la madre. Agustín, el mayor, fue el
que le dio muchos sufrimientos, por sus vicios y liviandades, y sobre todo por la práctica de la secta de los
maniqueos. Pero las oraciones de una madre Dios nunca deja de escucharlas. En sueños Jesús le decía:
“tu hijo no se perderá: donde tú estés estará él”.
Agustín pasó a Cartago a estudiar retórica, después pasó a Roma donde conoció al obispo San Ambrosio, el
cual fue un instrumento de su conversión y lo bautizó a los treinta y tres años de edad. Cuando iban a
regresar a Africa, en la ciudad de Ostia, a cuatro leguas de Roma, su madre se sintió desfallecer, la madre
decía: “¿Para que vivir más? - Dios me ha oído. Ya eres cristiano”. Nueve días duró su enfermedad. En una
tarde de noviembre del año 387 falleció a la edad de cincuenta y seis años. La Iglesia celebra su memoria el
27 de agosto.
