Dr. Brown dedicated his award to
the memory of Antone Tannehill,
M.D., a retired internal medicine
physician and community activist who
died April 3.
Dr. Brown was nominated for the
award, which is given annually to an
NMMC physician by NMMC employees, because of his outstanding contributions to customer service, teamwork, quality of care and leadership.
Dr. Brown is an internal medicine
physician with IMA-Tupelo who
serves as a hospitalist for NMMC-
Tupelo. As a hospitalist, he is responsible for initial hospital admission needs
and handles any requested tests of
IMA-Tupelo patients whose primary
care doctors continue to provide inpatient care. By handling admission procedures for these physicians, Dr.
Brown makes it possible for them to
see their office visit patients without
interruptions or long waits.
Dr. Brown completed his medical
studies at the University of Alabama
and his internal medicine residency at
the University of Mississippi Medical
Center in Jackson. He joined IMATupelo in 1978. ✔

Hospitals Facilitate Local Nursing Education
he University of Mississippi
School of Nursing, in conjunction with North Mississippi
Medical Center and Baptist Memorial
Hospital-North Mississippi, showed off
its new education facilities in Oxford
May 9.
From 10:30 a.m. to noon, dozens of
people – including 10 of the first students admitted into the Oxford program
and representatives from NMMC–
attended an open house at the 3,600square-foot facility in Kinard Hall (Wing
F). The space includes a large distancelearning classroom, two smaller classrooms and work areas, four offices and a
student lounge. John Heer, North
Mississippi Health Services president
and chief executive officer, participated
in the program and ribbon-cutting ceremony.
In late 2004, Baptist Memorial
Health Care and NMMC in Tupelo
agreed to provide funding for a nursing program at the UM campus in
Oxford. Previously, nursing students
had to complete their studies at the
University of Mississippi Medical
Center in Jackson.
“Establishment of the satellite
Bachelor of Science in nursing program on the Oxford campus brings the
nursing school back to its roots,” said
Kaye Bender, dean of the School of
Nursing. “The program originated on
the Oxford campus, so we are pleased
to be back in the community.”
The program is designed to recruit
more students to the nursing profession. For the June 2006 admission
cycle, 16 area students will join their
counterparts at UMMC and study
nursing in Oxford through distancelearning technology.
T
“With the shortage of nurses, this
program will allow us to add some students,” said Bender. “We are excited
about this opportunity and look forward to educating more nurses for
Mississippi.”
The partnership between Baptist
Memorial Health, NMMC and UM
School of Nursing also will eventually
provide an accelerated Master of
Science in nursing program for students who do not have a baccalaureate
degree in nursing.
“The University of Mississippi campus is grateful to these two health care
systems for making nursing education
on the Oxford campus a reality,” said
Provost Carolyn Staton. “Their assistance provides opportunities for more
students to have quality nursing education.
“This has been a thoughtful collaboration between BMH, NMMC,
UMMC, the School of Nursing and the
Ole Miss Oxford campus. All have
worked hard to ensure that we can
meet the demands of the nursing profession.”
“One of the most important issues
facing the health care industry is the
need for more nurses,” Heer said.
“We’re honored that our health care
organization is helping provide a new
outlet for individuals seeking a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing.
This will be a tremendous resource for
all hospitals in north Mississippi and
the patients we serve.”

education program, call Assistant
Professor of Nursing and Site Director
