Park Hill activism still alive and well
When my family moved to Park
Hill in the late 1950’s, we were fulfilling the dream of home ownership
for a middle class family. Landing in
Park Hill was no mistake. My father
knew that Park Hill was intentionally being integrated by middle-class
African-American and White professionals and that our Latino family had a good shot at competent
schools, safe streets, and a better

chance of being accepted than in
some other Denver neighborhoods. In this race-sensitive
time in Denver and around the country, Park Hill was an
oasis of sorts... but not without substantial struggle.
In the 1950s, real estate companies, banks and mortgage companies began to pressure white families to leave
Park Hill and began to sell homes in the neighborhood to
black families. The entire industry colluded by spreading

Volunteerism, civic responsibility and activism created
the modern neighborhood we know now as Park Hill and to
say that this activism affects current residents would be a
dramatic understatement. Park Hill residents were crucial to
moving Stapleton airport because of noise complaints, vital in
rebuilding Stapleton as an environmentally-friendly, walkable,
integrated neighborhood, helped to start The People’s Fair and
currently hold the largest 4th of July parade in the city.
Elected office in Denver often runs through Park Hill. In
the last mayoral election, five of ten candidates were either
raised or living in Park Hill, Denver Mayor, Federico Pena
lived in Park Hill while serving, the first African American
President of the Colorado Senate, Peter Groff, hailed from
the neighborhood, Colorado Governor, Roy Romer, raised
his kids there, Denver City Council President, Mary Beth
Susman, lives in Park Hill, and it is very common for At-large
school board and city council members to come from Park
Hill.
For my family as with many others, Park Hill has provided natural socio-economic and ethnic integration, and an
opportunity to get involved in building community. Those of
us who grew up in the neighborhood used to have a saying,
“Park Hill moms rule the world.” As I think back, we weren’t
too far off.

West Nile confirmed

The Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment reported on Thursday, June 19 that mosquitoes
collected in Adams, Boulder, Delta, Mesa and Weld counties are carrying West Nile virus. The department expects
more counties to find infected mosquitoes as the summer
progresses.
To help prevent West Nile virus infection, follow the
four D’s:
• DRAIN standing water around your house weekly. Don’t
forget to drain water from tires, cans, flowerpots, clogged
rain gutters, rain barrels, toys and puddles.
• DUSK and DAWN are when mosquitoes that carry the
virus are most active. Limit outdoor activities or take precautions to prevent mosquito bites during these times.
• DEET is an effective ingredient to look for in insect
repellents. Always follow label instructions carefully.
• DRESS in long sleeves and pants in areas where mosquitoes are active.

“Our 85 Days of Summer Fun campaign is part of the
Denver Resource for Awareness & Prevention efforts to
curb binge drinking by linking youth to a variety of free, fun
activities,” Nachshon Zohari, Denver Office of Drug Strategy
Director said. “We are teaming up with the MY Denver Card,
Denver Parks & Recreation, Denver Human Services and
the Mobile Music Studios to connect kids to activities that
give them an alternative to drinking alcohol, while providing
facts about alcohol and drugs.”
Denver students ages 5 to 18 have free, year-round
access to the city’s 23 recreation centers and 29 pools with
the MY Denver Card. Youth can participate in drop-in and
structured activities such as hip hop, youth leadership,
karate, youth fitness, music making and more activities.
Youth ages 7 and under must be accompanied by a parent
or guardian.

“DREAMers” Champions of Change
Two “DREAMers” who are members of the Mi Familia
Vota (MFV) Education Fund Latino civic engagement teams
in Colorado and Texas were honored at the White House as
“Champions of Change” on Tuesday, June 17.
The honorees include Fernanda Zaragoza-Gomez, 19, a
Canvass Lead in Mi Familia Vota Education Fund’s Pueblo,
CO office, and Steven Arteaga Rodriguez, 19, a Volunteer
Coordinator for MFV Education Fund in Houston, TX. Both
began working for MFV Education Fund to help grow Latino
civic participation after applying for the Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that was put in place by
President Obama.

More than three dozen community members celebrated
the opening of the Aurora offices of Protégete: Our Air, Our
Health (Protégete’s) with music, food and a warm welcome
from State Representative Fields. Protégete is a grassroots
outreach program of Conservation Colorado that engages and
organizes Hispanics around clean air and climate change.
The organizers asked attendants to participate in
Protégé tu vecindad, Protégé tu comunidad, a program to
work with members of the community to knock on doors and
share information with their friends, family and neighbors
on how they can directly participate in shaping decisionmaking on air quality protections.
Protégete will be working with community members to
remind local decision makers and polluters that Latinos are
already experiencing the consequences of climate change
and are willing to stand up for clean air, healthy communities and a strong future.

White House Summit for Working
Families
Colorado women were in Washington Monday to participate in the White House Summit for Working Families.
Shelby Ramirez, a Denver resident, is one of them. She
said as a mother, grandmother and daughter, she knows
about the importance of family and medical leave. It’s
protected under Colorado law. But according to Ramirez,
taking leave without pay isn’t always possible for those with
dependents. “We’re the primary caregivers, especially with
Latin families,” said Ramirez. “I truly am the caregiver of
the house. When somebody is sick, it’s very important for me
to spend time nurturing my family back to health.”
In a new report by the National Partnership for Women
& Families, Colorado earned a ‘C-’ for its workplace policies.
The state was recognized for its job-protected family and
medical leave and domestic-partner recognition under the
FMLA. But the report noted more can be done in Colorado to
support working families.

On Thursday, June 19 President Obama
spoke by phone with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto
to discuss a regional strategy to address the influx of unaccompanied children coming from Central America, through
Mexico, to the U.S.-Mexico border. They also discussed the
United States and Mexico’s shared responsibility for promoting security in both countries and in the region. Obama
also reiterated that arriving migrants will not qualify for
legalization under proposed immigration reform legislation
or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA).
The United States Senate confirmed Leon Rodriguez as
Director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services
(USCIS). Rodriguez moves from his position as director of the
Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human
Services, where he has been since September 2011.

Deadly explosion in Nigeria: Last
week an explosion at a sports viewing center
in northeastern Nigeria killed several men
and young boys. They were watching the
Brazil-Mexico World Cup match. Militants
warned viewing centers not to open during
the World Cup.
U.S. pulling funding in Uganda: The
United States is pulling funding from Uganda’s
government in response to Uganda’s anti-gay
law. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni
signed a law earlier this year that makes
some homosexual acts punishable by life in
prison. The United States is also cancelling a
planned military exercise in Uganda.
Freedom: Meriam Yehya Ibrahim was
freed from prison a month after being sentenced to death for refusing to renounce her
Christian faith. An appeals court ruled that
a lower court’s judgement was faulty but
a lawyer for Ibrahim declined to elaborate.
She was then rearrested the next day at an
airport as she attempted to leave the country.

VI was formally proclaimed the new King of
Spain on last week. His father Juan Carlos
had ruled for 39 years and helped shape
Spain into a democracy. The royal family has
been touched by several scandals throughout their reign. Felipe’s daughter Leonor
who is eight years old, becomes Princess
of Asturias and is first in line to the throne.

Putin also spoke with German and French
leaders regarding regional concern over the
crisis. NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen
believes that the Russia’s military expanding. Petro Poroshenko has announced plans
for a unilateral cease-fire with separatists.

‘Let the little children come to me’
The
New
International Version
of the Bible says
in Matthew 19:14,
“Jesus said, ‘Let the
little children come
to me, and do not
hinder them, for the
kingdom of heaven
belongs to such as
these.”
Although
David Conde
Jesus’ words were
directed to his disciples, the moment is a
metaphor for the future of Christianity that
starts with the sinless innocence represented
by children and is expressed as a lifetime
goal of all sinners that believe in spiritual
redemption.
The face of Latino immigration to the
United State has changed in the last half
a century as what started as essentially
Mexican men coming across our borders
to stay a while, make some money and
go home, gradually became whole families
coming across from Mexico and Central
America and beyond and coming here to stay.
Today, Mexican immigration into the U.S. is
close to zero due to a combination of less
economic opportunities and a demographic
development that has seen Mexico’s ability
to export labor diminish.
Not so with Central America, especially Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
There the gangs that supply the United
States’ demand for drugs have the general
population on the run and they are going
to Mexico and the United States through
Mexico.
What began as immigrants coming to
America to work hard and take care of their
families has now turned into refugees from
a hell created by our country’s appetite for
drugs. The issue is even more serious as
children have become the face of these
refugees on the border.
The children at our southern border
are a phenomenon that resonates with the
unspoken religious beliefs that permeates
our nature. At the same time, Latino toddlers and adolescents are upsetting the
American sense of balance between what is
lawful and what is right.
It is true that we are a nation of laws
and our heritage requires that we abide
by the rules we have written for ourselves.
But we also have a deep devotion to the
New Testament and words that spell out our
belief in the greatest story ever told as a
guiding light for our lives.
The story begins with a Christ child
born in an animal shelter in a little town not
much different from many poor villages that
mark the landscape of Guatemala, Honduras
and El Salvador. The story also includes a
pilgrimage to save his life from a king that
terrorized his world by murdering every first
born.
The children at our border are very
much a reenactment of that story as their
plight is making them come to America for
sanctuary. They are a reminder that Jesus
also needed a sanctuary in order to achieve
the greatness that made him the transpersonal icon of our age.
Given the Christian tradition, it makes
sense that Americans have taken the children to heart in a way that tends to confuse
our sense of order. I say confuse because
when you mix the mostly Central American
children’s plight with the great Latino immigration wave, the hundreds of thousands
of deportations a year and the 11 million undocumented produced by our broken
immigration system, it becomes obvious
that there are great contradictions to be
resolved.
Meanwhile the children are at our border and we are challenged to do what is in
their best interest. The question is, do we
answer the call that Jesus made to his disciples about children or do we throw them
into the same pile of immigrant issues that
we do not want to solve?

Estados Unidos ha cambiado en la última
mitad del siglo como esencialmente hom-
bres mexicanos que cruzaban la frontera
para quedarse un poco, ganar dinero y volver a casa y que se convirtió gradualmente
en familias enteras que venían de México y
Centro América y aun más allá y que venían
a quedarse. Hoy, la inmigración mexicana
a los EE.UU. esta cerca al cero debido a
una combinación de menos oportunidades
económicas y desarrollo demográfico que
ha visto la disminución en la exportación de
trabajo de México.
No fue así con Centro América, especialmente Guatemala, Honduras y El
Salvador. Existen las pandillas que abastecen la demanda de drogas por los Estados
Unidos tienen a la población que las busca
y se van a México y los Estados Unidos a
través de México.
Lo que comenzó como inmigrantes que
venían a América a trabajar duro y cuidar de
sus familias se han convertido en refugiados de un infierno creado por el apetito de
drogas de nuestro país.
El problema es aún más grave ya que
los niños se han convertido en la cara de
estos refugiados en la frontera.
Los niños de nuestra frontera sur son
un fenómeno que resuena con las creencias
religiosas tácitas que impregna nuestra
naturaleza. Al mismo tiempo, los niños
pequeños y los adolescentes latinos están
trastornando el sentido americano de equilibrio entre lo que es legal y lo que es correcto.
Es cierto que somos una nación de leyes
y nuestro ancestro requiere que sigamos las
reglas que hemos escrito para nosotros mismos. Pero nosotros también tenemos una
devoción profunda al Nuevo Testamento y
las palabras que explica nuestra creencia en
la historia más grande que se haya dicho y
que es el faro de nuestras vidas.
La historia comienza con un niño Cristo
nacido en un pesebre en un pequeño pueblo
no muy diferente de muchas aldeas que
marcan el paisaje de Guatemala, Honduras
y El Salvador. La historia también incluye
un peregrinaje para salvar su vida de un rey
que aterrorizaba al mundo al asesinar a los
primogénitos.
Los niños de nuestra frontera son una
reencarnación de esa historia ya que su
desgracia los hace venir a América como
su santuario. Ellos son un recordatorio de
que Jesús también necesitaba un santuario
para lograr la grandeza que lo hizo el personaje mayor de nuestra era. Conociendo
la tradición cristiana, tiene sentido que
los americanos hayan atendido esto en
una forma que tiende a confundir nuestro
sentido de orden. Digo confundir porque
cuando uno mezcla el clamor de los niños
centroamericanos con la gran ola de inmigración latina los cientos de miles de deportaciones por año y los 11 millones de indocumentados producidos por nuestro mal sistema de inmigración es obvio que hay grandes
contradicciones que deben resolverse.
Mientras tanto los niños están en nuestra frontera y estamos obligados a hacer
lo mejor para sus intereses. El problema
es, ¿contestamos el llamado que hizo Jesús
a sus discípulos acerca de los niños o los
tiramos a la misma pila de problemas de
inmigración que no queremos resolver?

The wonders of Colorado
Natural entertainment in abundance

There are hundreds of entertainment
options in Colorado during the summer. From
excellent live music to biking, hiking and running
trails and outdoor festivals galore, the Centennial
state offers a bevy of traditional and non-traditional entertainment options. Tucked into those
options are several natural wonders that, year
after year, continue to entertain, enhance and
enlighten tourists both local and out of state.
Colorado’s beach
“It’s kind of dramatic with these huge
dunes of sand that kind of just pop up out
of the valley and the backdrop are these
dramatic Sangre de Cristo Mountains,” said
public relations specialist Carly Holbrook of
the Colorado Tourism Office. “You feel like
you’re in the middle of the desert when you’re
in the sand dunes, but then you have these
mountains and this lush valley around you.
It’s a unique, natural wonder of the state.”
Those dramatic dunes to which Holbrook referred form
the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Hidden away in the
San Luis Valley, the dunes are especially popular in the days
leading up to summer thanks to a peculiar phenomenon that
occurs with winter’s runoff.
“There is this creek running near the sand dunes called
Medano Creek and in early June is the prime time for it,”
Holbrook said. “Basically it rises and turns the sand dunes
into a beach. You can go and wade and swim and tube and
you’re on this sandy beach with the creek.”
According the Great Sand Dunes website a low snowpack
in Southern Colorado has made the Medano Creek phenomenon a short-lived event this year as water levels have fallen
to about .5 to 1 inch; however, the sand dunes still offer one
of the more picturesque adventures in Colorado. For more

Colorado natives
For those interested in seeing how actual
natives of Colorado lived, they need look no
further than the southern-most national park
in the state: Mesa Verde.
“Mesa Verde is awesome because you get
a sense of an ancient culture and our ancestors and get to see their dwellings,” Holbrook
said. “I think that’s an interesting one from a
historic, cultural perspective.”
Just about 35 miles outside of Durango,
Mesa Verde offers tours for a variety of cliff
dwellings until November 2 when the park
closes for the season. For a full list of tour

Further north towards Estes Park, is
Rocky Mountain National Park. Known for
its extensive views of the Rockies, the park

others. But this
was not any boxing match, folks. A
boxing match held
in Brooklyn, NY

in at 126 pounds, at 5’2”. Gene Smith . .
. in the opposite corner Rodolfo “Corky”
Gonzales from Denver, Colorado weighing
in at 130 and a quarter pounds at 5’6”!”
An occasional shout out “Go Corky” in the
audience by local friend and former bodyguard, T-Dog, and ongoing assorted audience applause after connecting jabs from
Gonzales, brought everything back into reality in the dark theater.
As my mind began racing, trying to
absorb the black and white film in front of
me yet simultaneously connecting with my
childhood, I was . . . amazed by both technology and a boxing match that was held
in 1953 and now broadcast 61 years later.
Moved by the signs of the time including
men in the audience dressed in business
suits and fedoras. Surprised by a Jack Benny
and Walt Disney look alike, sitting front row.
Disappointed by the presence of one sole
woman spotted in the audience, but then
remembered it was 1953. Intrigued by a television supporting audience who sporadically
shouted out Corky’s name in a time when
minorities meant second-class citizenship.
Impressed by the cool cat, Jack Nicholson
type, in the audience wearing sunglasses,
but even more impressed by the fact that
a Latino made it to pro boxing in 1953.
Saddened by a more innocent time when
black and white film some how lessened the
anguish of reality.
Gonzales and Smith fought for 10
rounds, a rule of boxing long gone. They
were two young men looking for the glory
of the win. Ultimately Gonzales, the better fighter, won the bout by decision. As
I watched that young man called Corky
Gonzales at the young age of 24, married
with two daughters, bask in the glory of victory, I wondered what he must be thinking
on this day in 1953. Did he know he would
be long remembered by more than just his
family and friends?
Quite certain this screening held in
the name of fundraising evoked memories
and emotions for many. Family and friends
watching this historic film have their own
carved memory of Gonzales and the innocence of 1953. One can only imagine what
the Gonzales family felt. Quite sure they felt
shades of pride and loving memories of days
long gone. Surely they shared memories of a
father who would be much more than a boxer
fighting for a title. Without question, no one
can erase the memories of a father who
created controversy in his backyard, his city,
state and the country, yet inspired change,
because now he will be forever remembered
as we enter the doors of the Rodolfo “Corky”

una regla ya olvidada por mucho tiempo.
Ellos eran dos jóvenes que buscaban la
gloria del triunfo. Finalmente Gonzales, el
mejor boxeador ganó la pelea por decisión.
Mientras miraba a aquel joven llamado
Corky Gonzales a la temprana edad de 24
años, casado, con dos hijas disfrutando
la gloria de la victoria, yo me preguntaba
lo que él estaría pensando en ese día de
1953. ¿Sabía él que sería recordado por más
que solamente la familia y algunos cuantos
amigos?
Sabiendo que esta presentación hecha
a nombre de una recaudación de fondos
evocó recuerdos y emociones para muchos.
Familias y amigos que miraban esta película
histórica tienen su propio recuerdo grabado
de los Gonzales y la inocencia del año 1953.
Uno solamente se puede imaginar lo que
sentía la familia Gonzales. Con seguridad
ellos sentían oleados de orgullo y recuerdos
amorosos de años ya pasados. Con seguridad
compartían recuerdos de un padre que sería
mucho más que un boxeador peleando por
un título. Sin duda, nadie puede borrar los
recuerdos de un padre que creo controversia
en su lugar, su ciudad, estado y país, y que
sin embargo inspiró cambios, porque ahora
el será recordado siempre cuando entremos

Consulting, a Denver-based international
consulting firm specializing in management
and marketing. Her son, now 23, lives in
Denver and, says Perez, is working on opening up a business of his own.
There are few regrets, she says. “I look
back and wonder ‘how did I survive?’” But,
her son, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and a dream kept her going. “I was
always at the top of my class,” she says. “I
was in love with learning.”
Not all single mother stories end up
with happy endings. In fact, the picture for
this group is mostly bleak. A 2013 Brookings
Institution study says that four in ten singlemother households live in poverty. Many of
these mothers suffer with low skills, low
education and work in minimum wage jobs.
A sputtering economy and tight job market
offer little opportunity for advancement.
Studies also show that children from
single-parent households are more likely to
become generationally impoverished and
experience violence. They also have higher
rates of chemical dependence as well as
higher incidents of suicide.
For Estramera, whose baby will soon
turn one, escaping the trap of poverty is
only one of her goals. She is currently a
graduate assistant at Pennsylvania’s Lehigh
University and working toward a Ph.D. in
English. But like most adjunct university
faculty, it is the opportunity and not the salary that keeps her in the job.
“When I became pregnant I thought, ‘oh,
my plans are scuttled,’” the Philadelphia
native says. “But I figured out quickly that
my son would be my biggest motivator and
it went from a bad to a good, positive vibe.”
The Dominican-Puerto Rican Estramera
is determined. She drives an hour and a half
each way three times a week to teach freshman writing at Lehigh. Her mother provides
her baby’s day care. “Hopefully, in three
years, this will all pay off,” she says. “In ten
years, I hope to be teaching and writing at
a university and doing a lot of community
outreach.”
There are plenty of single mothers who
meet the challenge of parenthood every day
and find ways to move themselves and their
children ahead. But the reality is that most
that live this life focused not on the horizon
but simply on taking the next step. But for
Gomez, despite the many challenges, there
has never been a moment of looking back.
“I look at my Nikki, who’s so sweet and
beautiful, and think, ‘she’s some kind of
wonderful.’ And Marcus, he’ll write a note
and say ‘sometimes we don’t take the time
to tell you how much you sacrificed for us.’ I
just think to myself, ‘how did I get so lucky?’”

Lorenzo Montoya was released from
prison Monday after reaching a plea deal
days before a scheduled hearing that would
have revealed significant Constitutional
flaws in his conviction and new evidence casting serious doubt on his guilt.
In January 2000, then fourteen-year-old
Montoya was one of three Denver teens
arrested and charged for alleged involvement in the brutal murder of a north Denver
schoolteacher. Mr. Montoya, later convicted
of felony murder and other charges, was
sentenced to mandatory life without parole.
Mr. Montoya, now represented by lawyers from the Colorado non-profit Center
for Juvenile Justice, Alternate Defense
Counsel, and a team of pro bono lawyers
and paralegals from the law firm Cooley
LLP, filed a petition in June 2013 in Denver
District Court challenging his convictions.
The challenge was based on egregious
Constitutional violations, including ineffective assistance of counsel and new evidence, including DNA.
Montoya’s post-conviction counsel,
Lisa A. Polansky, Elizabeth Espinosa Krupa,
and Peter J. Sauer, also succeeded in
obtaining new DNA testing that produced
powerful evidence of Mr. Montoya’s inno-
cence. Additional new evidence included
Montoya’s co-defendant, Nick Martinez,
telling defense investigator, Gina Brovege,
that Mr. Montoya had nothing to do with
the brutal crime. In lieu of a hearing on
Mr. Montoya’s claims or a new trial, the
Denver District Attorney offered to dismiss
all of the charges against Mr. Montoya and
release him immediately in exchange for
a guilty plea to accessory after the fact.
The factual basis for this plea is that Mr.
Montoya rode in a car stolen from the victim and did not reveal what he heard about
the murder. After 14 years behind bars,
including many in solitary confinement, Mr.
Montoya pled guilty and was given a timeserved sentence.
At Monday’s hearing presiding Denver
District Court Judge Edward D. Bronfin
expressed his “appreciation and admiration for … the District Attorney’s Office, for
the work that Ms. Polansky, Ms. Krupa, Mr.
Sauer, and all you have done, the Center for
Juvenile Justice, and recognizing that in an
imperfect world where things don’t always
work right, it takes not only smart people
but people who know right from wrong….”

Hay unas cuantas cosas de lamentarse,
dice ella. “Miro atrás y me pregunto ‘¿cómo
hice para sobrevivir?’” Pero su hijo, con
su insaciable sed de saber y un sueño la
mantuvieron adelante. “Yo siempre estaba
en el tope de mi clase”, dice ella. “Estaba
enamorada de aprender”.
No todas las historias de madres solteras terminan felizmente. En realidad, la
imagen de este grupo es mala en la mayoría.
Un estudio hecho en el 2013 por Brookings
Institution dice que cuatro de diez casas de
madres solteras viven en la pobreza. Muchas
de estas madres sufren de pocas habilidades,
escasa educación y trabajan en trabajos con
salarios mínimos. Una economía tambaleante y un mercado difícil ofrecen pocas
oportunidades de avance.
Los estudios muestran también que
los hijos de casas de un solo padre son más
propensos a ser pobres y experimentan la
violencia. Ellos tienen también índices altos
de dependencia química y también altos
incidentes de suicidio.
Para Estramera, cuyo bebé tendrá
pronto un año, escapar de la trampa de la
pobreza es una de sus metas. Ella es actualmente asistente de la Universidad Lehigh de
Pennsylvania y está buscando un Ph.D. en
inglés. Pero como muchos adjuntos al profesorado de la universidad, la oportunidad y no
el salario es lo que la mantiene en su trabajo.
“Cuando quedé embarazada pensé, ‘Uy,
mis planes se hundieron’”, dice la originaria de Filadelfia. “Pero pensé rápidamente
que mi hijo sería el mejor motivador y paso
de malo a unas buenas vibras”.
La dominicana-portorriqueña Estramera
es inflexible. Ella viaja hora y media tres
veces a la semana para enseñar escritura
de principiantes en Lehigh. Su mamá le
provee el servicio de niñera. “Con suerte, en
tres años, esto valdrá la pena”, dice ella. “En
diez años, espero estar enseñando y escribiendo en una universidad y haciendo también
extensiones comunitarias”.
Hay muchas madres solteras que
enfrentan el reto familiar todos los días y
encuentran la forma de ir adelante solas
y con sus hijos. Pero la realidad es que la
mayoría viven esta vida enfocadas no en
el horizonte sino simplemente en dar el
siguiente paso. Pero para Gómez, a pesar de
los muchos problemas, nunca ha existido el
momento de volver atrás.
“Yo miro a mi Nikki, que es tan dulce
y hermosa, y pienso, ‘ella es algo maravilloso’. Y Marcus, el va a escribir una nota y
decir ‘algunas veces no me tomo el tiempo
de decirle lo mucho que ha sacrificado por
nosotros’. Yo solamente pienso, ‘¿cómo es
que fui tan afortunado’”?

their gratitude for the positive housing outcome he helped them reach. Zarate suggested
they volunteer for the Brothers Paint-A-Thon to pay it forward to another homeowner. On
Saturday, June 21, 14 volunteers came together to caulk,
seal and paint the home of elderly homeowners. Coordinated
by Zarate, the first fully Spanish-speaking Paint-A-Thon
team painted the home of the Spanish-speaking couple.
Homeowners include Julia Garcia and Tranquilino Brito, 68,
who became a U.S. citizen in 1998. Having lost his wife in
a traffic accident in 1996, he remarried in 2000. He had
worked at DIA before he was injured in the traffic accident.
In 2011, he was taking care of his 91-year-old mom and she
moved in with them. She is 94 now and she became a citizen
on April 14.

All eyes on FIFA World Cup
In the world of sports, soccer
is very international and extremely
popular in international circles, so
when the FIFA World Cup speaks, the
world listens. The World Cup kicked
off last Thursday with a slew of countries competing for the coveted title
in Brazil. With apparent ease, last
week the U.S. Men’s Soccer team
accomplished a big win over Ghana,
and was set to face the Portugal over

the weekend in an epic match that
ended with a 2-2 tie, with a Portugal goal in the last minute
of the match by its star player.
The U.S. faced soccer’s best player Portugal’s Cristiano
Ronaldo who has been a force by himself on the field, however his presence was less of an impact in Sunday’s game,
that is until the final minutes of the game when Ronaldo
single handedly denied the U.S. automatic advancement into
the next round.
The U.S. fell behind early, trailing. A goal tied up the
game and soon after Captain Clint Dempsey scored what
many thought to be the game-winning goal in the 81st
minute. Apparently this was not the case when Ronaldo is
on the field, because the Portuguese superstar who plays for
Spain’s Real Madrid tied up the game in the final seconds
crushing the U.S. Men’s hopes of advancing.
The Americans have accumulated 3 points in this round
after Sunday’s tie, while Portugal and Ghana both have 1
leading into their respective match Thursday the same time
the U.S. takes on Germany.
Team USA and Germany have equal points headed
into the match and Germany is now the team to beat, and
it will not be an easy feat. The Germans have a relentless
offensive attack that will undoubtedly test the U.S.’s defense.
Germany defeated Portugal with ease 4 - nil but had trouble
with Ghana in their tie Saturday. This Thursday’s match will
be one for the sports history books as two seemingly well
matched teams face off in their survival for the World Cup.
The current record looks this; Mexico defeated Croatia
3-1; Spain defeated Australia 3-0; Brazil defeated Cameroon
4-1.
The soccer matches lined up for this week are as follows: On June 25: Nigeria will face Argentina; Bosnia vs.
Iran; Honduras vs. Switzerland; Ecuador vs. France; (June
26) U.S. vs. Germany; Portugal vs. Ghana; South Korea
vs. Belgium; Algeria vs. Russia; (June 28) Brazil vs. Chile;
(June 29) Netherlands vs. Mexico.

En el mundo deportivo, el soccer es muy internacional

por eso cuando la Copa Mundo de la FIFA habla, el mundo
escucha. La Copa Mundo comenzó el jueves pasado con un
conjunto de países que compiten por el codiciado titulo en
Brasil. Con aparente facilidad, la semana pasada el equipo
de hombres de los EE.UU. lograron una gran victoria sobre
Ghana, y estaba listo para enfrentarse a Portugal el fin de
semana en un encuentro épico que terminó con un empate
de 2a2 y el gol de Portugal llegó en el último minuto del
partido hecho por su estrella.
Los EE.UU. se enfrentaron al mejor jugador de Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo quien ha sido una fortaleza en el campo,
sin embargo su presencia no tuvo el impacto en el juego
del domingo, esto es, hasta los minutos finales del partido
cuando Ronaldo por su cuenta le negó a los EE.UU. el avance
automático a la siguiente ronda.
Los EE.UU. se quedaron atrás esperando. Un gol empató

Letter to the Editor/Nota al Editor
Dear Editor:
Two weeks ago approximately 64 percent of “active” registered Colorado voters
received primary election ballots. Although
I am “active”, I did not receive a ballot. As
one of the 35 percent of Colorado voters
“unaffiliated” with either major official
party, all I received was a letter stating that
I need to “affiliate” in order to vote.
The U.S. Constitution and the Colorado
Constitution both guarantee “freedom of
association” – the freedom to associate
with whom we please, which necessarily
includes the freedom NOT to associate –to
DECLINE to associate with certain persons
or organizations. The U.S. Constitution
and the Colorado Constitution also provide
for such rights as “due process” and “equal
protection”, which guarantee the right of
citizens to participate equally in the political process.
Colorado law, however, requires me
to be a member of a political party in
order to vote in the primary election. In
order to exercise my right to participate
in the political process, I must give up my
right “not to associate”. In effect, I have to
choose between 1st Amendment and 14th
Amendment rights.
Compounding the problem is that the
primary is funded by the State of Colorado
using tax dollars. While the 35 percent of
us who are “unaffiliated” are not allowed
to vote in the primary, we are required to
help pay for it. We are first-class taxpayers,
but second-class voters.
Recently, a lawsuit was brought in U.S.
Federal Court in Newark by a coalition
called End Partisanship on behalf of eight
New Jersey voters, IndependentVoting.org
and the Independent Voter Project. The
suit challenges state funding of closed
primaries and demands that every voter
have an equal and meaningful vote at
every stage of the state-funded election
process. Independent / unaffiliated voters
throughout the country are watching the
case closely.

Para ejercer mi derecho de participar en
el proceso político, yo debo renunciar a mi
derecho de “no asociarme”. En efecto, yo
tengo que escoger entre los derechos de la
1ª Enmienda y la de la Enmienda 14.
Agregándose al problema es que las
primarias están siendo pagadas por el
Estado de Colorado y utilizando dinero de
impuestos. Aun cuando el de nosotros que
no “estamos afiliados” no se nos permite
votar en las primarias, nosotros estamos
obligados a pagar por ella. Nosotros somos
contribuyentes de primera clase y votantes
de segunda clase.
Recientemente, se hizo una demanda judicial en la U.S. Federal Court de
Newark por una coalición llamada End
Partisanship a nombre de ocho electores
de New Jersey, IndependentVoting.org y
el Independent Voter Project. La demanda
critica el pago estatal de primarias cerradas y demandan que cada elector tenga
un voto igual y significativo en cada etapa
del proceso electoral pagado por el estado.
Los electores Independientes/no-afiliados
del país están mirando a esto muy de cerca.
