Important members of the
San Antonio community
skipped their final Fiesta celebrations and joined together
in the crimson clad ballroom
at the Omni Hotel for a great
cause on Thursday— education.
For the past 18 years, La
Prensa Foundation hosts annual galas to raise money for
scholarships and has no plans
to stop despite having raised
more than $2 million from the
events.
“We want to get to at least
$10 million,” said Tino Duran,
La Prensa CEO and co-founder
in a heartfelt speech to a room
of about 300 people at 35 different tables.
The annual La Prensa Foundation Diamond Awards Gala
recognized some of the most
honorable people in the community with an array of awards.
The Big Business Award
went to AT&T’s Renee Flores,
the Community Affairs Award
went to City Manager Sheryl
Sculley, The Corporate Award
went to Toyota’s Mario Lozoya, the Diversity Award
was presented to SWBC’s
Linda Hummel, The Education
Award was presented to Texas
A&M San Antonio’s Mario
Vazquez, CPS’ Paula Gold
Williams was presented the
Finance Award, UHS’ George
Hernandez received the Health
Award and CHRISTUS’ Pat
Carrier received the Humanitarian Award.

Beamer also grilled the honorees about what is in store for the
companies they are in charge of
and matters of their personal
life; each honoree gave their
own opinions on education and
what it takes to be a leader.
La Prensa Foundation was
founded by Amelia Duran and
says it is her greatest accomplishment.
Long time La Prensa Foundation volunteer Matthew Perez
said, “I’m here because it’s a
great cause and the people who
are here are the ones that really
care about it. It’s a very family
orientated environment and it’s
inspiring to be around.”
In this day and age, a high
school diploma unfortunately
just doesn’t cut it to get a
good job in this economy. A
study done by Inside Higher
ED stated that there would be
a “significant slowdown in
enrollment growth over the
next decade compared to the
last one” because a college
education is so expensive and
student loan interests are rapidly increasing.
Students who come apply
for scholarships see paying for
college education as an obstacle
but with the financial help of
great leaders such as Amelia
Duran and La Prensa Foundation they have the opportunity
to see it as a mile stone.

Mi desayuno con Gabo

La verdad, nunca le llamé
Gabo o Gabito. Hubiera querido,
pero nunca fui parte de ese
privilegiado círculo de amigos
y escritores que se reunían frecuentemente con Gabriel García
Márquez, el novelista más importante de nuestro tiempo. Es más,
ni siquiera lo conocía en persona.
Como millones de lectores,
crecí con él leyéndolo, analizándolo, tratando de llegar hasta el
hueso de cada una de sus frases perfectas. Su carpintería era
única; siempre parecía encontrar
la palabra exacta para decir lo
que quería. Y eso requería mucho
trabajo, mucho talento y muchas
páginas en la basura. (Se nos
olvida ya que la computadora
es post-Aureliano Buendía y su
descubrimiento del hielo).
En mi época universitaria,
García Márquez ya era García
Márquez, el genio de “Cien años
de soledad” y el mejor exponente
del realismo mágico – esa manera
tan nuestra del ver el mundo–.
Macondo es América Latina. Y
en este rincón del planeta donde
todo es posible - dictadores
que no mueren, niños con colas, mujeres que flotan, amores
eternos y fantasmas más vivos
que los vivos, García Márquez
fue el primero en darle voz y
legitimidad.
En 2004, cuando un colega periodista me invitó a un evento en
Los Cabos, México, donde iban
a homenajear a García Márquez,
acepté con una condición: Preséntamelo.
Ese día me levanté emocionado, me encontré con el organizador dispuesto a cumplir su
promesa y, de pronto, ahí estaba
el escritor; desayunando con su
esposa, Mercedes, en la esquina
del restaurante de un enorme
hotel y saludando a tanta gente
con la mano que parecía que
espantaba moscas.
Me tragué la vergüenza de molestarlo y me acerqué mientras él
le metía el tenedor, creo, a unos
huevos estrellados. Me presenté
y, para mi sorpresa, me dijo:
“Ven, siéntate aquí, a ver si así
dejan de molestar”. Y me apartó
una silla junto a él.
Lo que unos días antes hubiera sido absoluta ficción, estaba ocurriendo; desayunaba con
García Márquez. Para Mercedes,
sospecho, yo era una peste más y
me lo hizo saber con su mirada de
aguijón. Pero aguanté los picotazos y me quedé a conversar.
Había que matar dos horas y tenía
a García Márquez a mi lado. No
lo iba a desaprovechar.
Pero el primero en preguntar fue él. Quería saberlo todo
sobre Univisión, la cadena de
televisión donde trabajo, y sobre
los cubanos en Miami. Le conté,
pero yo lo que quería era oírlo
a él. Busqué la pausa y le dije:
No entiendo su amistad y apoyo
a Fidel Castro. Y ahí brincó
Mercedes, como hablando por
los dos.
“Lo conocemos desde hace
mucho tiempo, es nuestro amigo
y ya es muy tarde para cambiar”,
me dijo ella.
El asintió. Para él la amistad
y la lealtad iban antes que la
política. “Los que hablan de
política son Mercedes y Fidel”,
apuntó él. Pero no es ningún
secreto que García Márquez intercedió con Castro para liberar a
algunos presos políticos cubanos
y, quizás, algo más.
El escritor mexicano Carlos
Fuentes me contó sobre una
cena en septiembre de 1994 con
García Márquez y el presidente
Bill Clinton en Martha’s Vineyard. ¿Le pidió Clinton a García
Márquez que hablara con Castro
para buscar un acercamiento
entre los dos líderes?
El propio Clinton, el año pasa
do, me dijo que nunca le pidió
en esa cena a García Márquez
que actuara como mediador con
Castro. Pero cualquier posibilidad posterior de un acercamiento
entre Estados Unidos y Cuba a
través del escritor colombiano
quedó destruida tras el derribo
por parte de la fuerza aérea cubana de dos avionetas del grupo
Hermanos Al Rescate en 1996.
En México, nuestro desayuno,
sin embargo, trató más de literatura y periodismo que de política.
García Márquez, en ese momento, estaba concentrado en la
creación de una nueva generación
de reporteros a través de la Fundación Nuevo Periodismo. Pero,
reconozco, había momentos en
que García Márquez perdía el interés y se iba de la conversación,
quien sabe a dónde.
Le pude decir, casi como confesión, que para mí su mejor
novela era “El Otoño del Patriarca” y, como respuesta, su
bigote espumoso subió como ola.
Y no, él nunca había dicho que
“Cien años de soledad” no podría
haberse escrito en ese momento
en que los lectores buscaban
novelas más cortas.
El desayuno concluyó cuando
nos llamaron al evento. Me tomó
del brazo, caminamos juntos
y luego lo perdí en un mar de
alabanzas y seguidores. Nunca
nos dijimos adiós. Así fue mejor.
Para mí, por mucho tiempo, ese
fue el realismo mágico: sentarme
a desayunar con Gabriel García
Márquez. Imposible. Impensable.
Y, sin embargo, ahí estuvimos.

The education dilemma in Texas
State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte
Earlier this month, in an Education Committee hearing, my
Senate colleague Dan Patrick
— my likely opponent in this
year’s election for Lieutenant
Governor — declared that Texas
has a “crisis in education.” We
do have a crisis, but not the one
he thinks — our crisis is a failure
to properly fund education.
Over and over, I hear Patrick’s fellow Republicans say
that “government should be run
more like a business.”
I agree. But the problem is,
the Republicans only seem to be
referring to one aspect of business: Cuts and layoffs. Scaling
back is fine if it helps a business
achieve efficiency and protect
profits.
But you can only carry it so
far. At some point, cuts can have
a negative effect on the quality
of your product or customer
service. If it’s not careful, a
business can cut itself right out
of business.
Smart business owners do
more than cut. They also know
when to invest. If their busi-
ness’ manufacturing equipment
is wearing out, they buy new
machines. If their company is
prosperous and ready to expand,
they buy a bigger space. They
buy advertising to attract new
customers. They pay wages high
enough to keep talented workers
from leaving.
One of the core functions of
our Texas state government
is education — more than 40
percent of our state budget goes
to either K-12 or higher education. And in recent years, many
of my colleagues in the Texas
Legislature have had that cutsonly mentality toward this part
of the “business.”
In the 2011 legislative session,
when Texas supposedly was
having a budget shortfall (it actually wasn’t), our state leaders
(over my objections) cut more
than $5 billion from education
funding. In 2013, when money
was more plentiful, you would
think those legislators would
have rushed to put those dollars
back into the schooling of our
children and young people. They
didn’t — they restored some of
the cuts, but not all.
This was no accident — many
of those legislators, after the
2011 cuts, actually went back
to their districts and boasted in
their Republican primaries about
the cuts. They were proud to be
starving our schools!
Legislators have a right and
an obligation to demand that our
tax dollars be used efficiently,
and by law our state budget must
be balanced.
But they do not have a right to
chop our schools’ funding until
the schools cannot do their jobs.
The state constitution mandates
that our students receive an
“adequate” education … and
when thousands of teachers are
being laid off while students are
being packed into overcrowded
classrooms well above the legal
student-teacher ratio, you can
bet “adequacy” is not being
achieved. That’s why hundreds
of school districts across Texas
are currently suing the state.
Patrick’s solutions won’t give
our schools the funding they
need — he supports voucher
schemes that would take money away from neighborhood
schools, and he even proposed
last session that school districts
be forced to sell off unused
schools to private entities for
only $1!
It’s time for our state leaders
to remember that “investment”
part of business. Failing to invest in education doesn’t just
hold back our next generation of
Texans. It makes new employers think twice about coming to
Texas. It makes it hard for Texans to create the breakthrough
innovations that create new businesses and sustainable jobs. If
we refuse to invest, our state will
look just like that factory with
worn-out, broken equipment.
With the proper investments
and giving our teachers the
tools that they need, we won’t
have a crisis — we’ll have the
best-educated workforce in the
nation, ready for the challenges
of the modern economy. If I’m
elected Lieutenant Governor,
I’ll fight for that investment.
Immigration Reform can happen now
U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett
Bipartisan immigration legislation approved by a large majority
of the U.S. Senate has lingered in
the House for 10 months — not
for lack of time, but for lack of
will.
With rare exception, only legislative measures approved by
the Speaker can be voted upon by
the House. Speaker John Boehner
ordinarily permits consideration
of only those bills that enjoy the
support of a majority of Republicans, under the so-called “Hastert
Rule.” Ironically, the former
Speaker of the House Dennis
Hastert, a Republican for whom
this tradition is named, recently
spoke in favor of action on immigration reform!
House Republicans have been
unwilling to consider even a
regressive, enforcement-only immigration bill, fearful this could
lead to a conference committee
with the Senate, producing a
broader, reasonable measure.
Nor does border security justify
inaction. We are already spending more on the border than all
other federal law enforcement
combined. And recently funding
was approved for an additional
2,000 officers.
Within a week of proposing his own set of immigration
principles, emphasizing security, Speaker Boehner reversed
course, claiming lack of trust in
the President. Many Republicans
did not trust the President before
the Speaker announced these
principles, despite the fact that
the Obama Administration has
deported 2 million immigrants –
far more than prior Republican
administrations. Immigration
reform can await neither a Republican embrace of the President
nor a new President. Every day of
waiting costs our economy and
tears more families asunder.
The road map for progress
requires the Speaker to allow
a vote on immigration reform.
The economic benefits of such
reform have been validated in one
objective study after another. Lift
law-abiding neighbors from the
shadows, allowing them into the
economic mainstream. Let them
live without the dread of being
torn from their children, so they
can work without fear or start
small businesses of their own.
Unleash their economic potential
to help our economy, reduce the
deficit, bolster job creation, and
strengthen the viability of Social
Security and Medicare.
The only remaining legislative alternative to the Speaker’s
obstructionism is a “discharge
petition,” such as that which
overcame Speaker Newt Gingrich’s obstruction to bipartisan
campaign finance reform. I was
one of the first Members to sign
the discharge petition to bring the
bipartisan immigration reform
bill to the floor. If fewer than 10
Republicans joined Democrats, I
believe we would secure action
on the bipartisan House immigration bill, of which I am a sponsor.
Any member who truly believes
in reform should sign this request
for prompt consideration.
In the meantime, the President
should help our effort to secure
bipartisan legislation by announcing that further executive action
will be necessary if no legislation
is adopted. He must extend Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and act to reduce
the record level of deportations.
Recently, the President ordered
a review of his Administration’s
handling of enforcement and
deportations. This is a modest
move in the right direction, but
our families and communities
do not need an expert panel to
know that House Republican
stalling is hurting families and
our economy.
Comprehensive reform enjoys
the support of those who wear
their hearts on their pockets and
those who vote their pocketbook.
In San Antonio, this includes so
many — from inspiring Dreamer
immigrant students to both the
San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber
of Commerce.
It is long past time to let a
majority of the House vote on
legislation that the majority of
Americans support.
U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, a
Democrat, represents the 35th
Congressional District, which
includes downtown San Antonio
and parts of the West, East, and
South sides, as well as parts of
five other counties.

The Canonization of
a life time for the
Catholic Church
The Roman Catholic Church’s
will bestow its highest honor of
Canonization to Pope John XXIII
and Pope John Paul II to become
saints.
For many modern day Catholics
this is the first time they’ll witness
the Church’s first double-papal
canonization and two popes many
saw. All told, 81 other popes have
been canonized.
Canonization may best be described as the manner in which the
Catholic Church formally declares
that ‘a soul is in heaven and worthy
of veneration and emulation by the
faithful.’
John XXIII led the Catholic
Church for five years from October
1958 until his death in June of 1963.
Pope Francis is playing a role in the
canonization of John XXIII.
He dispensed with the requirement that two miracles be required
for making someone into a saint.
John XXIII only had one miracle
attributed to him.
Pope John XXIII had a fervent
opinion on equality and many believe it was best summed up with
his famous statement, “We were all
made in God’s image, and thus, we
are all Godly alike.”
Like Pope Francis, John Paul II
made changes in the process for
sainthood. His most notable was
to remove the role of the so-called
devil’s advocate, who would previously make arguments about why
a candidate should not be made a
saint.
To San Antonians John Paul II
was more like a friend. On his visit
in 1987 the city was on hand for
the mass in what is now Westover
Hills.
The outdoor mass attracted hundreds of thousands and many of
whom waited for hours just to
catch a glimpse of the Holy Father.
Then San Antonio Mayor Henry
Cisneros and family had a private
audience with his Eminence.
The mayor’s first born John Paul
Cisneros suffered a heart problem
and John Paul II prayed for him.
Today John Paul is a grown man
and living a full life. Miracle?
Who’s to say?
He traveled through the downtown in the famous Pope Mobile
and like Fiesta Parades; crowds
were five to six deep along the
route.
Another reason John Paul II was
so loved by the people was because
of his simple ways. For the longest
time he refused to wear the satin
slippers his predecessors had worn.
The crosier John Paul II celebrated
his being named pope was one
handed down from Pope Paul VI.
He became a world traveler, visiting 129 countries, something that is
still a part of today’s papacy.
Church scholars say John Paul
II was a vocal advocate for human
rights and used his influence to effect political change. Vatican radio
added, “Perhaps to better understand the papacy of Blessed John
Paul II, the most universal, the most
travelled, the most media conscious
of all popes one must not only look
to the Vatican but the mystical Poland he held in this heart.”

enfermedades mentales. Como
resultado, las personas que
necesiten ayuda no la van a
tener debido a los recortes en el
presupuesto.
Estos problemas de salud
mental no son nada nuevo. Aun
así parece que siempre están
atados al dinero o a la falta de
dinero. Sin embargo, el dinero
está allí. Desafortunadamente,
para quienes controlan el dinero
siempre tienen algo o dónde gas
tar el dinero que tienen.
El anuncio de los $50 millones
para Ucrania son buenas noticias, pero los problemas en casa
todavía no han sido abordados.
Parece como si cada día Estados Unidos está dando millones
a otros países por los problemas
con los que tienen que lidiar para
que sigan funcionando.
¿Y qué pasa con nuestra gente
que está viviendo con enfermedades de salud mental? ¿No se
merecen ellos el mismo tipo
de ayuda? En lugar de mandar
dinero a otro lado, por qué no
cuidar a los suyos.
Uno se da cuenta que si acaso
el gobierno fuera a usar esos $50
millones significaría que cada
estado solo recibiría un millón
de dólares. Eso es un millón
de dólares que los estados no
tienen ahora.
Muchos adagios vienen a la
mente en lo que se debe hacer
con los dólares estadounidenses
y uno se tiene que preguntar por
qué el gobierno no puede hacer
algo por su cuenta para ayudar
a su propia gente.

S.A. ready to give big
through online fundraiser

More than 460 local nonprofits
are anxiously awaiting for the first
ever The Big Give S.A.
As a part of a national giving day known as Give Local
America, The Big Give S.A is
a 24-hour online fundraiser that
will take place from midnight to
midnight on May 6; the goal is
to get San Antonio residents to
collectively donate one million
dollars for nonprofits in town.
On the day of the event, San
Antonians will be able to log on
to TheBigGiveSA.org to donate
to any of the 467 charities participating in the event.
While the minimum donation is
$10, there is no maximum limit.
According to Executive Director of the San Antonio Nonprofit Council, Scott McAninch,
although the event is largely
focused on raising funds for charities, there’s more to the fundraiser
than the monetary aspect.
“As a community wide giving
challenge, The Big Give S.A.
increases public awareness of
the impact local nonprofits make
in addressing our community
and social challenges, it brings
nonprofits and donors together, it
expands the idea of online giving,
it connects people with causes that
make them move,” McAninch
said. “By turning giving into a
shared city-wide experience, we
can significantly impact the San
Antonio area and collectively
move our city and our county
forward.”
Along with a handful of city
council members, Mayor Julián
Castro is a huge supporter of the
event.
“One of the most beautiful
things about our city is its heart,”
Castro said. “There is a deep reservoir of caring, of compassion
for others that is one display 365
days a year throughout the work
that our nonprofits do in San Antonio and in this region.”
The Mayor challenged all residents to say thank you to the nonprofit sector by giving at least $10.
“Whether you give at 6 o’clock
at night or 6 o’clock in the morn-
ing, give something on May 6,
lets make The Big Give S.A. the
most successful give in all of the
United States,” Castro added.
Local businesses and foundations have already stepped up
to the plate and collectively
donated a $224,000 check that
will be distributed throughout the
nonprofits.
Three charter schools will receive $150,000 and the rest of the
check will be used as prizes and
matching funds.
To kick off the event, the Big
Give S.A. will host a party at the
Jack Guenther Pavilion at the
Briscoe Western Art Museum on
May 6 at 5:30 p.m. until midnight
with food trucks, music, prizes
and more.

Hay un mito sobre el chocolate,
dicen que causa obesidad.
El año pasado se conoció un
estudio de la Universidad de
Granada en España, el cual desmitificó esa creencia.
El trabajo fue realizado por
investigadores de la Facultad de
Medicina y de las Ciencias del
Deporte, entre mil 458 adolescentes, el cual mostró que un mayor
consumo de chocolates se asoció
con niveles más bajos de grasa
corporal total y central. Coincide
con otro estudio realizado entre
adultos en California.
Recomiendo a quienes tienen
un apetito desenfrenado por este
dulce y que no creen en estos
estudios, que coman el chocolate
negro, combinándolo con alimentos ricos en fibra.
Estoy resuelto a seguir regalando chocolates. Soy experto
en enamorar con esos dulces.
Cuando cortejé a mi primera novia tenía un truco para seducirla.

When I think of Subaru, I
think of fast moving vehicles
with incredible traction that can
take on just about any road. I
don’t think of a fast, low-profile
sports car! Well, I was wrong.
Subaru of America, Inc. last
year introduced its rear-drive
BRZ and jumped into the fray of
competitive, performance sports
cars. The idea was to design a
low weight, an ultra-low center
of gravity and precision steering vehicle that could run with
the best. The BRZ delivers on
all those points with accurate
handling, snap acceleration and
plenty of style.
Subaru’s has managed to give
you power and fuel economy in
one beautiful, naturally aspirated
200-horsepower BOXER engine.
The BRZ’s EPA-estimated 34mpg highway fuel economy
is impressive considering the
amount of power you feel off the

Ya se acerca el Cinco de mayo,
día en que los sanantonianos salen
a las calles, disfrutan de la comida
mexicana acompañada de una
cerveza bien fría. Ese día todo es
felicidad, sin embargo la mayoría
no sabe lo que hay detrás del verdadero significado esta fecha tan
especial.
El Cinco de Mayo data de la
primera vez que el ejército mexicano logró derrotar a los franceses, quienes contaban con una
potencia mucho mejor preparada.
La batalla tuvo lugar el cinco de
mayo de 1862 en la ciudad de
Puebla de Zaragoza.
Son muchos los que confunden
este día, pues creen que se celebra
la Independencia de México,
cuando en realidad la celebración
es la Batalla de Puebla.
Por esto, además de disfrutar de
la comida y de los eventos que se
llevarán a cabo en la ciudad, es
importante comprender a fondo la
batalla y los sucesos que surgieron
durante dicha fecha.
Después de la guerra mexicoamericana, México atravesaba
por una notable crisis económica,
por lo que en 1861, el –en ese entonces– presidente Benito Juárez
declaró que México alargaría
por dos años la paga de la deuda
externa.
Los gobiernos de Inglaterra,
España y Francia no quedaron
satisfechos con esta decisión; sin
embargo, México logró negociar
de manera diplomática con Inglaterra y España, firmando así los
Tratados de Soledad. Francia no
toleró la espera.
Fue así como Napoleón III,
quien tenía el cargo de emperador
en Francia, nombró a su parien
te, Maximiliano de Austria, archiduque y líder de la importante
batalla que Francia emprendería.
En abril de 1862 los franceses
desembarcaron en Veracruz y
emprendieron la campaña militar
hacia el centro de la República
Mexicana.
El ejército mexicano estaba
comandado por el General Ignacio Zaragoza y apoyado por los
generales Miguel Negrete, Felipe
Berriozabal, Juan N. Méndez y
Porfirio Díaz.
El ejército de Francia ordenó el
avance de sus tropas que constaba
de seis mil hombres, quienes contaban también con el apoyo de los
conservadores.
Los franceses creyeron haber
obtenido la victoria desde un principio, pues el gobierno mexicano
tan solo contaba con cuatro mil
hombres.
El regimiento de los invasores
fue derrotado por los mexicanos,
quienes con orgullo pelearon con
artillería y herramientas caseras
logrando vencer a los franceses de
la mano de una fuerte granizada, y
obligándolos a retirarse del campo
de batalla.
La guerra continuó por cinco
años más y finalizó hasta que se
logró la ejecución del Emperador
Maximiliano y el retiro de las
tropas.
La victoria fue sorpresiva
porque el ejército francés era
mucho más grande y mejor preparado, sin embargo el ejército
mexicano puso todo su empeño
por defender su país, y logró
vencer.
El Cinco de Mayo es un día
para conmemorar el coraje de
los luchadores contra la opresión
y simboliza la decisión de una
nación unida por su gente.
Los mexicanos lograron conservar su identidad y libertad ante las
tropas extranjeras. Quizá por eso
este día de fiesta es tan popular en
cualquier lugar en donde habiten
mexicanos.
En San Antonio
En Avenida Guadalupe se conmemorará el Cinco de Mayo el
mismo día de la celebración. Será
a las 10 a.m. en la histórica Plaza
Guadalupe, ubicada en el 1314 de
la calle Guadalupe.
Asimismo, en el Market Square,
ubicado en el 514 de la calle W.
Commerce, se llevará a cabo un
evento el sábado 3 y domingo 4
de mayo.
El sábado será de 10 a.m. a 10
p.m. y el domingo de 10 a.m. a 9
p.m. Habrá comida, bebidas, un
concierto musical y otras conmemoraciones.

received a $10,000 grant from
the National Endowment for the
Arts (NEA) for the services it
provides for the community. It
is a hallowed honor, considering
that thousands of organizations
nationwide apply to even be
considered for a grant.
“The NEA is pleased to announce that Gemini Ink is recommended for an NEA Art
Works grant,” NEA Chairman
Shigekawa said. “These NEAsupported projects will not only
have a positive impact on local
economies, but provide opportunities for people of all ages to
participate in the arts, help our
communities to become more
vibrant, and support our nation’s
artists as they contribute to our
cultural landscape.”
“This is the third year that we
have ever received a grant from
the NEA,” Sheila Black, execu-

“With so many art foundations
around, and to be recommended
for a grant makes us believe that
the NEA has recognized the good

With their new grant, Gemini
Ink plans to extend their creative
writing programs to the community.
Individuals of all ages and
walks of life group together at
Gemini Ink to share their stories.
Many go on to get them published and recognized. Building
camaraderie, Gemini Ink has
been a sanctuary to many and has
helped them to find a place in the
world where they will be listened
to and accepted.
“I’m not exaggerating when
I say we’ve had people come to
our sessions and really open up,”
Black said. “It’s a very emotional
experience when you are able to
share your stories and life experiences in words and print.”

democracy during the first years
of the American Civil War; celebration of Mexican heritage and
pride; commemorate the Mexican
army’s victory over French forces
at the Battle of Puebla, May 5th,
1862.
For you history buffs from
somewhere else who may not
been privileged to study Texas
History it became a cause of celebration. Cinco de Mayo has its
roots in the French occupation of
Mexico which took place in the
aftermath of the Mexican-American War of 1846-48, Mexican
Civil War of 1858 and the 1860
reform Wars.
These wars left the Mexican
Treasury nearly bankrupt. On
July 17, 1861, Mexican President
Benito Juarez issued a moratorium in which all foreign debt
payments would be suspended
for two years.
Not happy about that France,
Britain and Spain sent naval
forces to Veracruz to demand
reimbursement. Britain and Spain
negotiated with Mexico and
withdrew. Unfortunately France
at the time ruled by Napoleon III
decided to use the opportunity
to establish a Latin empire in
Mexico that would favor French
interests, the Second Mexican
Empire.
Late in 1861, a well-armed
French fleet stormed Veracruz,
landing a large French force and
driving President Juárez and
his government into temporary
retreat.
However the Mexican Army
of 4,500 took on the French Army
of 8,000 strong and as we say in
Texas, “put the whoop” on them,
crushing the then considered
“premier army in the world.” The
rest is history.

Square with sounds and smells
of authentic Mexican food, Mariachi music on the plaza and
Folklorico dancers with their
colorful dresses.

It’s Fiesta, and for Fiesta Brand the timing is right

Bolner’s Fiesta Products
picked a prime time to unveil
their newest spices.
Earlier this week, State Sen.
Leticia Van de Putte awarded
the Bolner family with the prestigious Texas Historical Commission Texas Treasure Business
Award. Founder Clifton Bolner
never imagined receiving an
award that recognizes a Texas
business that’s been around for
50 consecutive years.
Fiesta is celebrating its 60th
anniversary.
“I never thought I would get
the award,” Mr. Bolner told La
Prensa. “I went in to a partnership
with God and it (Fiesta Brand)
worked. We had about 20 spices
when we first started, now we
have over 400.”
The 60-year anniversary also
brought with it three new spices
to its ever-growing spice variety
that so many people use to make
their meals a little tastier.
“Southwest Style Fajita Sea-
soning, Chipotle Hamburger
Spice and Garlic Pepper,” Mike
Bolner announced, vice president
of sales and marketing for Fiesta
Products.
Bolner added they hadn’t had
a new item in about 18 months
and for the summertime Bar-B-Q
season these should be a welcome
addition to anyone’s seasoning
rack.
“They’re going to be out in the
stores probably in the next two
weeks in different stores around
South Texas,” Bolner said.
He talked about each flavor and
the why behind it. In describing
the Southwest Style Fajita seasoning, he explained that Fajita
(seasoning) was the company’s
No. 1 selling item because of the
different flavors. So they added
this one to the spices and gave it
more of a Southwest flair, like the
Northern Mexico flair people like.
“I think that’ll be a lot of fun;
I think they’ll enjoy that,” Bolner
said.
The Garlic Pepper is something
they’d not done before. Fiesta
took garlic powder and added
parsley and black pepper, white
pepper and few other things to
make it round and warm to excite taste buds. They’re looking
forward to see how it goes.
The Chipotle Hamburger Spice
fits right in because Fiesta Products has been making hamburger
spice for a number of years,
which is basically, salt and pepper and a few things.
“We added some color to it.
We added the Smokey hot flavor
that’s associated with Chipotle
peppers. I think that’s going to
be a real winner for us,” he explained.
Additionally, Bolner said they
probably sell more blends than
natural spices and that’s because
of the convenient factor which
gives people something that’s
easy to use and something they
like a lot.
“The flavor profiles in South
Texas are asking for hotter products. When you think of how
popular wings have gotten, those
are hot, hot, hot,” he added.
“Ghost peppers are hot. People
use a lot more cayenne pepper.

National Poetry month may
be coming to a close, but Urban
15 continues the celebrations
with Mega Corazon, a live,
worldwide broadcast featuring
24 of San Antonio’s greatest
performance poets on Wednesday, April 30, 2014.
The idea for Mega Corazon
evolved from the March event
“Mi Pueblo,” a reading by outgoing 2012-2014 Poet Laureate
Carmen Tafolla, who performed
with a diverse group of local
poets.
“The success [of Mi Pueblo]
made us say ‘let’s do something
more,’” Scott Andrews, Urban
15 Events Coordinator said.
The self-curated event includes a unique combination
of 24 poets, both published and
unpublished, located throughout the country.
“This poetry is a celebration
of the human residence and joy
here, and it is the perfect time
for an art form based on feelings,” Tafolla said.
Spoken word is a large part
of San Antonio’s culture, and
gives generations the ability
to share and pass down their
history.
Urban 15 will be transformed
into a soundstage closed to the
public, but the live broadcast
will be available for world-
wide streaming April 30 from
4 p.m.to 10 p.m. CDT.
“I think it’s important to
read poetry, because it allows
us access to a deeper sense of
ourselves -- maybe what we’re
afraid to say or maybe things
we haven’t thought of before.
This can be very empowering
in that when we know ourselves
well, we can move through the
world in confidence,” Laurie
Ann Guerrero said, the newest
Poet Laureate.
The poetry will be read by the
poets themselves, or by chosen
friends who have a knack for
performance. The performances
will be divided into 15 minute
segments, with no breaks or
dead air time.
“We often find poetry on the
written page, but the theatrical
aspect of it is an important part
of the spoken word,” Tafolla
said
“A video presentation allows
people to watch that aspect as
well as to hear the poetry as it’s
performed,” Tafolla added.
Urban 15 has supported the
local arts scene since it was
founded in 1974, through programs in arts education, music,
and performing arts. Urban 15
became a non-profit organization in 1983, but continues to
foster the growing San Antonio
culture.
“For the people of San Antonio, with our history of beauty
and tragedy and injustice and
progress, poetry offers a platform from which to speak. And
it is a vehicle that is familiar
because it is part of our inheritance: it was our ancestors
who first offered us poetry in
the oral traditions. We must
reclaim that history and be
responsible stewards of that
gift,” Guerrero said.
“San Antonio always had poetry going on, but now people
are realizing this has value,
and now it’s getting center
stage in the modern world,”
Tafolla said.

marked his place in basketball
history as he was named as
Coach of the Year this week.
This became Coach Pop’s
second time in three years to
win Coach of the Year, also
known as the Red Auerbach
trophy named after former legendary Boston Celtics coach,
Red Auerbach.
Popovich joins Don Nelson and Pat Riley as the only
coaches to win the award three
times.
The winner is selected
among votes from a panel of
a 100 sportswriters from the
United States and Canada.
Popovich won a unanimous
portion of the votes with a
staggering 59 first place votes.
Jeff Hornacek of the Phoenix
Suns came in second with just
37 votes.
The Spurs finished the season with a 62-20 record, best in
the NBA and gave them home
court advantage throughout the
NBA playoffs
Since the Spurs drafted forward Tim Duncan, Popovich,
Duncan and the Spurs have
the best winning percentage
over any 17-year span in NBA
history at .706.
The team also finished first
in the Southwest Division
making it the seventh time
in 10 seasons since the Spurs
have moved from the Midwest
division.
The 3-time All-Star coach
has coached all four NBA
championship squads for the
Spurs along with winning five
conference titles.
The Coach of the Year award
should always go to the best
coach. It doesn’t go that way
every year but this year Popovich and the Spurs proved to
sportswriters, the NBA and its
fans he deserves this award.
He doesn’t show his smile a
majority of the time because he
never wants his team to settle,
he always wants his players to
strive to be better not only as
basketball players on the court
but also as men off of the court.

Analyzing the NFL schedule: Is your
team Super Bowl XLIX bound?

The NFL’s regular season won’t
begin until September 4, but the first
score is already on the board.

Along with Wednesday’s release
of the 2014 schedule came news that
the NFL can begin using its flexible
scheduling system six weeks earlier
than before. The league and one of
its network partners (NBC) can now
“flex” two of the six Sunday night
games between Weeks 5 and 10 to
ditch less-attractive matchups in
favor of better ones.
For the large majority of NFL
fans who watch games from home,
this is great news. It’s better football
from the couch.
For those who actually attend the
games, it’s another story altogether.
While there will be some ticketholders thrilled about the potential
of a prime-time matchup, there are
plenty who understandably consider such moves as a major inconvenience. Not everyone loves night
games -- especially if you have
to get up for work early Monday
morning, take your kids with you or
attend in cities where traffic is a major concern. In fact, as I write this,
I’m still in a bumper-to-bumper jam
after leaving a 2013 New England
Patriots game in Foxboro.
Trying to make set plans for nonfootball functions on the Sunday of
home games now becomes even
riskier starting in early October.
The situation is even worse for outof-town fans who want to attend a
scheduled Sunday afternoon game
and fly back that same night.
The NFL already is asking a lot
from its season-ticket holders just
to attend regularly scheduled Sunday afternoon games based upon
the empty seats that often pop up
on TV. There were only two local
blackouts in 2013, which means

With the increased possibility of
kickoff-time roulette, I can understand why some fans would think
season tickets just aren’t worth it
anymore.
Some other thoughts on the 2014
NFL schedule:
X: “Strength of schedule” is a
fun talking point but a weak way
to guess which teams will make
the playoffs.
Yes, the 2013 Denver Broncos
and 2012 New England Patriots
reached the AFC title games after
facing the easiest slate of opponents
based upon won-loss records from
the previous season. But the Arizona Cardinals had that same luxury
for the 2010 and 2011 campaigns
and failed to reach the playoffs in
either season.
Conversely, the 2013 Carolina
Panthers faced the hardest schedule
on paper – opponents had a combined winning percentage of .543
– and still won the NFC South title
with a 12-4 mark. The 2012 Broncos also faced teams with a .543
winning percentage and finished
with an even better 13-3 record.
The lesson: Too much can change
in the NFL from year to year to put
too much stock in how teams fared
the previous season.
X: In case you were wondering, Indianapolis has the easiest
“strength of schedule” lineup this
season at .430 primarily because
NFC South foes Houston (2-14)
and Jacksonville (4-12) were so
dreadful in 2013.Oakland has
the toughest strength of schedule

Vince Young is out of work, but
he says there's always a job in Texas
waiting for him.
The legendary quarterback of
the Longhorns was released by the
Green Bay Packers last August,
and he hasn't taken any meaningful
snaps in the NFL since his short
stint with the Philadelphia Eagles
in 2011.
Young has his own steakhouse in
Austin, Texas, but that's not where
he would be working if his playing
days are officially done.
"If football doesn't work out for
me, the university has a great job
for me," Young told the Houston
Chronicle at an event on Wednesday. "Whatever it is I just want to
support the university."

me había elegido para ser el
representante del tradicional vaso
de refresco que anualmente lleva
la imagen de uno de los jugadores
de los Spurs”, expresó el alero
titular Kawhi Leonard durante la
ceremonia para anunciar la venta
de un vaso alusivo (de 30 oz.) que
lleva impresa su fotografía de
medio cuerpo en los momentos
de encestar el balón. El vaso lleva
impreso el legendario logotipo
de la cadena de restaurantes
McDonald’s.
La mujer de negocios Celia

toman lecciones de inglés

treinta equipos inauguraron
la temporada número 139 de
Grandes Ligas.
Y este año podría agregarse
una nueva posición en la
alineación: intérprete de idioma
extranjero, debido a la gran
cantidad de jugadores venidos
del extranjero que juegan en
Ligas Mayores. Por tal motivo,
la enseñanza de idiomas y el uso
de intérpretes nunca han sido
tan importantes. Según Major
League Baseball, algo más de 28
por ciento de los jugadores en los
partidos de apertura del 2013 eran
extranjeros, siendo alrededor del
24 por ciento de ellos de origen
latinoamericano. Muchos ya
hablan inglés, pero muchos otros
todavía no lo dominan.
“No hay duda de que en el
béisbol de Ligas Mayores cada
vez hay más necesidades de
enseñar el idioma”, afirma Steve
Swad, presidente y director
ejecutivo de Rosetta Stone, el
líder mundial en enseñanza de
idiomas.
“Nosotros trabajamos
oficialmente con casi la mitad de
los equipos de Ligas Mayores y
muchos jugadores aprenden por su
cuenta con nuestros programas”,

algo importante se perdió en la
traducción.

Stars Re-Sign Jayne Appel

San Antonio Stars center Jayne
Appel has signed a new multi-year
contract with the team, head coach
and general manager Dan Hughes
recently announced. “I am so excited to be rejoining my teammates
and coaches in San Antonio,” said
Appel. “The fans and support are
tremendous and I look forward to
continuing our quest for a championship.”
In 2013, Appel led the team in
total rebounds (259), rebounds per
game (8.9). Total blocks per game
(1.28). In 29 appearances, the California native averaged 5.9 points
and 26.5 minutes per game.
“We are excited Jayne will continue to a key part of the Star’s
family into the future,” said Hughes.
“Jayne has become one of the premier rebounders and defenders in
the WNBA through her consistent
improvement. Her leadership within the team, and in the community is
valuable to us and the fans.”
During the past WNBA offsea-
son, Appel averaged 23.2 points
and 11.1 rebounds per game while
playing in China with Liaoning,
helping lead her team to the Chinese League playoff quarterfinals.
Appel was selected by the Stars
with fifth overall pick in the first
round of the 2010 WNBA Draft
out of Stanford University. During
her inaugural WNBA season, she
became the first Stars rookie to be
voted as a WNBA All-Star since
teammates Sophia Young in 2006.
In her WNBA career, Appel has
appeared in 121 games, averaging
4.0 points 5.7 rebounds, and 1.1
assists in 17.8 minutes. With 259
career rebounds entering the 2014
season, Appel currently ranks
sixth in franchise history for total
rebounds.
The Stars tip-off 2014 season, is presented by CHRISTUS
Santa Rosa and H-E-B, in Atlanta
against the Dream on May 16 at

para discutir el propuesto proyecto de la extensión del Boulevard Skyplace, en San Antonio, Texas,
Condado de Bexar. El área del propuesto proyecto está localizada en la parte norte del Aeropuerto
Internacional de la Ciudad de San Antonio (Aeropuerto). El área de construcción incluye aproximadamente 0.3 millas lineales. El propósito de este proyecto es proveer un acceso seguro a vehículos
en el Aeropuerto y también evitar inundaciones en el área, debido a la falta de drenaje. Antes de
la presentación, el personal de La Ciudad estará disponible a las 6:00 pm para contestar cualquier
pregunta que el público tenga de manera informal. La presentación incluirá el diseño propuesto, la

para tráileres anchos que necesiten dar vuelta. El acotamiento de 11 pies en cada lado, permitirá
el estacionamiento temporal de vehículos con problemas mecánicos y el acceso a vehículos de
emergencia. La mayoría del proyecto será construido en una cuenca baja que se va a llenar con
sedimento del mismo Aeropuerto. Esta cuenca varia en profundidad, desde un pie hasta 25 pies; y
cercana al arroyo Salado.
La Ciudad ha preparado un documento llamado Exclusión Categórica que describe los posibles
impactos ambientales del proyecto. El documento Exclusión Categórica incluye dibujos y planos
mostrando imágenes de cómo se va a desarrollar el proyecto. Este documento estará disponible para

diversidad étnica mayor que la
adulta debido al crecimiento sin
precedentes de las minorías, en
particular los hispanos, según
un estudio que difundió la
Universidad de Nuevo Hampshire.
Los rápidos cambios en la
composición étnica de la población
estadounidense reflejan también
una disminución significativa
en el número de niños blancos
no hispanos, apuntó el estudio
dirigido por Kennedy Johnson,
demógrafo en el Instituto Carsey
de la UNH.
En 2012 el 67 % de la población
de mayores de 20 años lo
componían los blancos, pero entre
los menores de 20 años los blancos
eran el 53 %, según el informe.
Entre los adultos, los hispanos
eran el 14 %, mientras que entre
los menores de 20 años eran el
24 %.
"La aceleración de la diversidad
racial y étnica queda más en
evidencia cuando se comparan los
niños en edad preescolar con los
adolescentes", añadió el estudio.
Las minorías, esto es latinos,
negros, indígenas y asiáticos,
representaban el 43 % de los
jóvenes de 15 a 19 años en 2012
y el 48 % de los menores de
cinco años.
También ha sido muy diferente
la evolución de las poblaciones
entre los menores de 20 años,
continuó el estudio.
Entre 1990 y 2000 la población
hispana tuvo una tasa promedio
de crecimiento anual de 5,3 %, la
población negra creció un 1,5 %
y la población blanca no hispana
apenas un 0,1 %.
Entre 2000 y 2012 mientras
que la población hispana tuvo un
crecimiento anual promedio del
3,4 %, la población negra sufrió
una reducción anual del 0,2 %
y la blanca una merma anual del
0,9 %.
"La maternidad temprana
también caracteriza a la población
hispana", continuó el informe, que
señala que "el 44 % de todos los
hispanos recién nacidos (entre
2000 y 2012) tenían madres de
menos de 25 años".
En ese período aproximadamente
el 30 % de los niños blancos recién
nacidos tenían madres de menos
de 25 años de edad y, aunque las
mujeres negras también tienen
hijos a una edad más temprana
que el promedio, entre toda la
población "la disminución en
la fertilidad entre los negros
ha reducido la población negra
joven".

canonización de los papas Juan
XXIII y Juan Pablo II, el próximo
27 de abril, con vigilias de oración
y conferencias que culminarán
con la misa de acción de gracias,
informó la Conferencia del Episcopado del país.
En un escueto comunicado, los
obispos mexicanos señalaron que
la canonización de los dos beatos
en una ceremonia que encabezará
el papa Francisco supone "un
acontecimiento histórico".
Con motivo de dicha ceremonia, la Iglesia católica mexicana
llevará a cabo vigilias de oración,
conferencias y la exposición de
"algunas reliquias de los nuevos
santos".
"Un momento significativo
tendrá lugar en la Basílica de
Guadalupe", donde este domingo
a mediodía el nuncio apostólico,
Christophe Pierre, presidirá la
misa de acción de gracias, apuntó
la Conferencia del Episcopado
Mexicano (CEM).
A la misa en la capital mexicana asistirá el Consejo de Presidencia de la CEM, mientras que
los católicos del país estarán
representados en la ceremonia de
beatificación por algunos obispos
y sacerdotes, pero "sobre todo
muchos fieles laicos", añadió.

“Lógica primitiva”

“Hacía ocho años que tenía
en jaque a todo el Cibao. Se
presentaba de improviso en
Santiago, desaparecía y al
otro día abaleaba un soldado
en Salcedo.... Se dijo que era
brujo; que cuando lo quería,
se hacía invisible. Se le temía
como a un dios implacable. El
Gobierno despachó cientos de
hombres tras él, y el ejército
llenaba la cárcel de pobres
campesinos, sospechosos de
encubrirle. Nada....
“... me llenó de sorpresa
verlo tan sereno... como si no
fuera el objeto de una caza
feroz y larga.
Llevaríamos más de media
hora allí. Él había contado
innumerables episodios de su
vida y parecía muy cansado.
Tenía una voz triste.... Él era
campesino, joven....
“—Quique. Quizá yo pueda
serle útil sin faltarle a mi
conciencia.
“—No, amigo, no tiene que
faltarle; solo lo quería pa
conversar con usté. Me parece
que no voy a durar mucho, y
como de mí se habla tanto, no
quería morirme sin que siquiera
un hombre supiera que de no
acosarme como un perro con
rabia, esto se hubiera evitao....
“... Torné a verlo. Ni miraba
ni se movía. Negro, triste y
perseguido...
“—No piense mal, Quique.
¿Por qué va a morirse usté?
“—Es que tengo que morirme,
amigo.... He pasao muchos
años poniéndole el frente al
diablo y llevándome en claro a
muchos vagamundos; pero hace
unos quince días que me pasó
una cosa muy mala, y dende
entonces ni an duermo....
Quique había estado
rondando por Licey en pos
de un compadre enfermo, y
los soldados lo velaron. Ellos
no acertaban nunca, porque
la fama de Quique les hacía
temblar el pulso a los mejores.
Además, no se cuidaban de que
hubiera o no gente. Mejor si la
había, porque así se propalaba
la noticia de que se había
enfrentado al temible Quique
Blanco, y eso, claro, podía
proporcionar algún ascenso.
Así, ese día una niña cruzaba
cerca del fuego. La cogió una
bala de Quique. Él la vio caer,
y de golpe sintió que se le
aflojaba el corazón.
“—Dende ese día ando como
loco, amigo. Cierro los ojos y
la veo cayendo. Era una pobre
criatura. No me lo perdono,
amigo, y quisiera tener el poder
de Dios pa devolvérsela a su
mama....
“—¿Usté tiene hijos, Quique?
—pregunté.
“—No, amigo. Si hubiera
tenío uno...
“Adiviné el resto. En su
lógica primitiva, dar su hijo
en pago de la muerta era una
solución. ¡Y eso lo pensaba él,
que no sabía cómo se quiere a
un hijo!...
“Dos días después... me
encontré con la noticia de
que un muchacho de Moca
había sorprendido a Quique
Blanco durmiendo y le había
destrozado la cabeza de un
tiro con el revólver del propio
muerto. Más tarde supe que
habían paseado el cadáver por
todos los pueblos del Cibao,
para que la gente no creyera
que seguía vivo”.
Este cuento del ilustre
escritor cibaeño Juan Bosch,
uno de sus cuentos escritos
antes del exilio y por lo tanto
antes de que llegara a ser
presidente de la República
Dominicana, nos recuerda que
Dios sí dio a su hijo en pago de
la muerte que merecía cada uno
de nosotros a causa de nuestro
pecado, y que, a diferencia de
lo que sucedió luego de que
mataron a Quique Blanco, no
había cadáver suyo que pudiera
pasearse por los pueblos de
Judea o de Galilea “para que
la gente no creyera que seguía
vivo”. Porque Jesucristo
resucitó, y hoy quiere que lo
busquemos de todo corazón
para que lleguemos a conocerlo
en persona como Él realmente
es, un Dios poderoso pero
clemente y compasivo.

Hope for the Future (HOPE),
the marketing and development
department for the 43 Catholic
schools in the Archdiocese of
San Antonio, received a generous grant from The Najim Family Foundation in the amount
of $200,000. The Foundation,
which was established in December 2006 by business owner
Harvey Najim, is committed to
helping nonprofits that benefit
the children of San Antonio.
Najim established the Najim
Scholars within HOPE in 2009
and has graciously helped fund
the Catholic education of more
than 200 Najim Scholars each
year since 2009.
Hope for the Future annually helps 1,900 children with
tuition assistance however, 800
children remain on the waitlist.
Through tuition assistance provided by Hope for the Future, Hope for the Future receives a generous grant giving more hope

In addition to these activities,
there are also large efforts being
made on social media in order to

Also present at the news conference was Vatican spokesman
Father Federico Lombardi, who
explained that the Canonization
Mass will begin with the recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet,

charge with no tickets required,

pilgrims and faithful who want
to venerate the saints’ bodies,
and the next day there will be
a Mass of Thanksgiving in St.

St. Peter’s Basilica.
Regarding the number of pilgrims expected to participate in
the event, Father Lombardi stated
he had no idea, though “it will
be a lot.”
He added that while it is uncertain, Benedict XVI will likely
attend the canonization.
On a final note, Cardinal Vallini expressed that this event is
not only for believers, but also
for non-believers, because “God
loves everyone.”
On Sunday, April 27, at 3 p.m.,
Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller,
MSpS, will celebrate a Mass to
honor the canonization of Blessed
John XXIII and Blessed Pope John
Paul II at Holy Spirit Church at
758 West Ramsey Avenue in San
Antonio. All are invited to attend.
In Rome, the Holy See recently
announced initiatives designed to
help the Catholic Church live the
event in a spiritual way.
“This is a spiritual event … not
just a worldly happening. It is a
feast of holiness,” Cardinal Agostino Vallini, vicar general of the
Diocese of Rome, said recently of
the Holy See’s preparations for the
April canonization of the two late
Bishops of Rome.
Cardinal Vallini expressed that
although we might be used to hearing about saints, these two men are
“bishop popes,” underlining the
need to place a special emphasis on
their relationship with the church.
What links the two men together,
he observed, is their faith; he noted
they were both models of Christian
life and faith, and that in the light
of this faith they lived their lives in
light of “a goal.”
Rather than “busying” themselves with too many events, the
cardinal explained that for this
event the Diocese of Rome isn’t
doing “a lot,” so that the people
will be allowed to truly live in the
moment, and follow the path of a
deeper spirituality.

Se invita toda persona interesada que asista a la exhibición abierta al público. Se anima a
personas que tengan necesidades especiales de comunicación o acomodación y les interesa
asistir, que se comuniquen con Mike Chavez al (512) 416-2514 un mínimo de dos días hábiles antes de la exhibición abierta al público. TxDOT, el condado de Bexar, y las oficinas
de la Alamo RMA están abiertas de lunes a viernes de las 8:00 a.m. hasta las 5:00 p.m.,

The second of two public hearings will take place beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May
29, 2014 in the City Council Chamber, Municipal Plaza Building. This will be the second
of two U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development required city-wide public
hearings for the City’s Consolidated Annual Action Plan/Budget process for the Fiscal Year
2014-2015 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG – 40th Year), Home Investment
Partnership Grant (HOME – 23rd Year), Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), and Housing
Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) programs.
A copy of the proposed Action Plan and Budget is currently available for review and
comment on the City’s website www.sanantonio.gov/gma through the date of the public
hearing. This information also will be available for review and comment at the Department of Planning and Community Development located at 1400 S. Flores, Unit 3. Copies
will also be located at the Department of Human Services located at 106 South St. Mary’s
Street, 7th Floor and the Central Library located at 600 Soledad.
Citizens wishing to speak at the public hearing may individually sign the appropriate
sign-in sheet for that purpose which will be provided at the entrance of the City Council
Chambers prior to 9 a.m. the day of the hearing. Each citizen will have three minutes to
speak on one or multiple agenda items. Groups consisting of three or more citizens will
be allotted nine minutes total to address the council on any one item.
This meeting site is wheelchair accessible. The accessible entrance is located at the Municipal Plaza Building/Main Plaza entrance. Accessible visitor parking spaces are located
at City Hall, 100 Military Plaza, North side. Auxiliary aids and services, including Deaf
interpreters, must be requested forty-eight (48) hours prior to the meeting. For assistance

Cavaliers Parade en honor de 100 años del Zoológico

Con el tema “River Wild”,
en conmemoración de los 100
años del Zoológico de San Antonio, miles de espectadores
presenciaron uno de los eventos
más esperados de Fiesta: Texas
Cavaliers River Parade.
Este evento, junto con otras
actividades y funciones desarrolladas a lo largo del año preparadas por los Cavaliers, tiene
el propósito de beneficiar a la
niñez, especialmente en los segmentos menos favorecidos de la
comunidad.
Partiendo del Arneson River
Theatre, Donald Miller, King Antonio XCII, presidió la colorida
procesión de 51 barcas alegóricas.
Una de ellas transportó como
Grand Marshal al Staff Sargeant
Leroy A. Petry, héroe de la guerra
en Afganistán, condecorado con
la presea Medal of Honor, y quien
continúa activo en el servicio
militar a pesar de haber perdido
un brazo en combate.
Texas Cavaliers Charitable
Foundation anualmente distribuye
fondos para apoyar instituciones
de beneficencia para la niñez,
como Make-A-Wish.

La feliz y sonriente cumpleañera Josaly M. Romero, en su fiesta por sus cinco años, fue acompañada por familiares, amistades y sus amiguitas con quienes se divirtió de lo lindo bajo el tema de
“Cinderella”. En la foto, Josaly, cuarta de izquierda en la primera fila, posó para el álbum de los
recuerdos. Su fiesta la amenizó el mariachi Los Charros de Rafael Basulto. Se quebraron un par
de piñatas alusivas y, además, compartió delicioso pastel de chocolate.
En la ceremonia de regalos presentados por sus respectivas madrinas y familiares, Josaly fue cap- Los enamorados esposos Cristina y Marcos Caballero celebraron el primer año y bautizo de su
tada recibiendo medalla y cadena impuesta por su abuelita Juanita Martínez de Romero y su tía heredero Brandon Caballero, quien mediante colorida fiesta con el tema “Minions” fue felicitado
por familiares y sus invitados. Los asistentes disfrutaron de todos los atractivos, entre ellos el
Aurora (Aurorita) Romero Martínez, quienes le dieron sus bendiciones.
“Taty’s Show”, toro mecánico, brinca brinca con resbaladero y deliciosa cena.
El honorable alcalde Julián Castro, orador principal en la apertura de Fiesta San Antonio 2014,
agradeció a organizadores su dedicación a este tradicional evento anual que es disfrutado por

que por varios días fue exhibida en el campus de Central Catholic High School. El señor Méndez
ha sido colaborador de La Prensa desde principios de los 90’s, por lo que nuestro Publisher, Tino
Durán, agradece sus excelentes aportaciones.

nietos de los esposos Rosa y Ramiro Méndez,
quienes los felicitaron por celebrar a la moda este

Olive Garden extiende su menú y
agrega “bajo en calorías”

Restaurantes de comida italiana
existen muchos, pero definitivamente el que siempre le atina al
gusto de los latinos y de los americanos es Olive Garden, y mucho
más ahora que ya reestructuró su
menú y añadió deliciosos platillos
y, algunos, hasta bajos en calorías.
Me enteré por una conocida
y de inmediato pasé a revisar el
nuevo menú, que incluye platillos
con pasta, pescado, camarones y
verduras.
Para comenzar pedí la ensalada
Roasted Tomato Caprese y unos
camarones con aceitunas y ajo en
salsa de tomate como aperitivo.
La salsa del aperitivo tenía un
sabor delicioso, pues es una receta
del restaurante hecha a base de
tomate, ajo y especias.
Después tuve la oportunidad
de probar un pescado cocinado
en aceite de oliva extra virgen
y pesto. Este va acompañado de
pasta en salsa de tomate y ajo
con brócoli.
Este platillo definitivamente es
de los mejores del nuevo menú
de Olive Garden, pues además
de contener proteína y vegetales
no contiene ese tipo de salsa que

deja el estómago incómodo por
sus condimentos.
De lo contrario, las nuevas salsas de Olive Garden son ligeras y
al mismo tiempo conservan ese
saborcito que le da categoría al
platillo.
La pasta con ostiones, camarones y espárragos es también
una de las favoritas del nuevo
menú. Esta pasta es muy similar
al Frutti di Mare, platillo italiano
que consiste de pasta en salsa de
tomate con mariscos.
Y si eres de las personas que
busca guardar la dieta, entonces
te recomiendo el pescado al horno
con camarones y verduras. Este
platillo contiene tan solo 240
calorías, y aunque suene “aburrido” podría decir que es el mejor
platillo bajo en calorías que tiene
Olive Garden.
Si bien, Olive Garden cuenta
con una extensa variedad de platillos dentro de su nuevo menú,
el menú tradicional siempre está
disponible debido a que muchos
disfrutan del famoso Fetuccini
Alfredo, del Tour de Italia y de
otros favoritos.
Dentro de sus postres, un pastel
de chocolate blanco con una capa
de berries es lo que se añadió al
menú de ahora.
Además, se agregó un nuevo
especial al menú, “Cucina Mia”.
Por tan solo $9.99 se puede ordenar una pasta con la opción de
salsa. La proteína se agrega por un
precio mínimo.
Definitivamente ya se añadieron
muchas opciones en Olive Garden, lo cual ayuda a mejorar la
imagen y presentación al cliente.
Desde pastas, pizzas y mariscos
hasta platillos bajos en calorías
podrá consumir a partir de ahora.

Beware of “The Quiet Ones”

The 1970s were a scary time
in the world of psychological experiments. As if shock
therapy and lobotomies weren’t
enough to keep people afraid,
there were fringe experiments
in the field that would vary from
university to university. Some
of these experiments were based
on the psyche and how it would
handle fear.
Some of these would place focus on where the fear came from.
The case study done in 1972 by a
group of Canadian Parapsychologists was centered on the idea
that supernatural experiences
came from the mind of the individual as opposed to existing in
the real world beforehand.
To clarify, eight individuals focused and meditated on a
made up “ghost” named Phillip
Aylesford to see if a ghost could
be created entirely from the
imagination.
An entire background was
written for Aylesford even going
as far as bringing in a painted
portrait of the fictional character. When the meditation and
concentration failed to produce,
the group conducted séances by
sitting around a table and calling
to the imaginary entity.
To everyone’s surprise (and
this bit was documented on
video) the group was successful
in communicating with “something” that had interacted with
the table by tapping once for yes,
and twice for no.
In the most extreme points of
the situation the entity would
agree with the backstory that
was made up and go so far as to
answer questions about its past
and rattle the table around.
The experiment was deemed a
success and is still the cause of
much investigation to this day.
“The Quiet Ones” takes the
backstory of the Phillip experiment among a few other similar
experiments in the 70s and uses
it as a starting point to give a
much more horrifying version of
what could have happened in the
environment they set up.
With the producer of “The
Woman in Black” and the iconic
Hammer Production Studios
behind “The Quiet Ones” any
self-respecting horror film has
to raise an eyebrow with some
interest.
Star of “The Quiet Ones” Jared
Harris plays Professor Joseph
Coupland. Harris has had some
great roles in his past that include Moriarty from “Sherlock
Holmes: A Game of Shadows”
and David Robert Jones from
“Fringe” among a ton of other.
Olivia Cooke, who has roles in
A&E’s “Bates Motel” and the
upcoming sci-fi thriller “The
Signal,” plays Jane Harper.
LP: While doing your research on “The Quiet Ones”
did you stumble across any
other experiments that were
being done around that same
time?
Jared Harris: The original
experiment was more of the
match that started it all up. But,
there are a bunch of experiments
that were done during the 70s
that were much more about being
trick experiments. There were
the famous ones where electric

shocks were administered if
the person got a wrong answer
and they would keep turning it
up. The idea was to see how far
people would go, and the real
experiment is being done on the
person that is conducting the experiment more than the subject.
And there were lots of elements
that the writers drew to weave
into the story. And there was
some pretty outrageous things
that people were doing back
then, if you look at the Stanford
experiment, I don’t know if you
could get away with something
like that now.
LP: What sparked your interest in this story?
Olivia Cooke: It was just an
amazing story; I had never read
anything else like it, as far as the
dynamics of the relationships
go. This girl thinks she is possessed and these two are helping
her to either cure her or to get
to the point where this thing
inside of her is projected out. I
also just love her character. She
is five characters in one: she’s
manipulative, she’s a teenage
vixen, she’s vulnerable, she’s a
lot of fantastic things.
LP: Were you a horror fan
growing up?
Harris: Yea, absolutely. We
used to watch them with my dad.
He had a 16mm projector, and we
used to rent them. I remember
watching “Night of the Living
Dead” and I didn’t sleep for 10
days, I remember going to see
”Jaws” and I wouldn’t get in
the ocean for about four years.
I remember a great film called
“Night of the Demon” which was
a fantastic horror movie, and of
course “Rosemary’s Baby.” I
have to say there is a theme that
runs through all of them, and they
rely on the audience’s imagination and a psychological aspect
to achieve their effect rather
than any in your face excessive
violence and gore…. That said I
also love “Evil Dead 2.”
Cooke: I love horror movies. I
think they are best when you go
with your friends and you get to
see them all scared, trying to hide
behind their scarf or behind their
jacket. I really loved “Paranormal
Activity,” “Insidious” and “The
Woman In Black.”
LP: Have you ever had a real
life paranormal experience or
anything that appeared to be
outside the realm?
Cooke: They really haven’t,
but its like I’m trying to will
them to happen and they never
do. Me and Jared both have had
family members that have told us
about something that happened to
them, so we can only go off their

UT Austin for several years before
dropping out to pursue comedy full
time in 2004. Since then, he has won
the 2010 title for “Funniest Person
In Austin,” written for several MTV
shows, and appeared in prestigious
shows like Marc Maron’s WTF
Podcast.
“I would say I’m no more a Hispanic comedian than I am a Catholic
comedian, it’s a very strange experience,” Molandes added.
Laughter seems to override language and cultural barriers during
Molandes’ performance, as he
describes current life transitions:
moving back from New York City,
living at home with his parents in
Austin again while he continues
performing comedy sets.
For Molandes, who has performed since the festival began in
2012, Moontower is a place to connect with audiences and comedians.
“Moontower has created a platform for up and coming Austin
comics and sketch artists to play
on big stages in front of very large
audiences… Moontower brings
significant visibility to highly gifted,
up and coming talent among the
100-plus comics we bring in for the
festival; thus, providing a major career boost,” Jim Ritts said, executive
director of the Paramount Theatre.
Despite his own cultural confusion, he embraces the success of
Hispanic comedians throughout
the country, including Chris Garcia
and “The Daily Show” correspondent Al Madrigal. Molandes has
begun to find connections within his
heritage by contributing humorous
short articles on Hispanic news for

“Growing up in East Texas, there
wasn’t really any culture to grab
onto, and I grabbed onto pop culture
more than the Hispanic culture…
The more you get older, the more
you wish you had that,” Molandes
said.
Molandes draws his inspiration
from a variety of comedians including Cheech and Chong, Leslie
Nielsen, of “The Naked Gun” film
series, and Bill Cosby.
“If you watch his [Bill Cosby’s]
comedy, it’s never about being
black, it’s about being a father, and
being relatable… He transcends all
racial aspects and the superficial
things that divide us, and finds the
soil that everyone’s problems grow
from, and I feel like that’s the kind
of comedy that I go for,” Molandes
said.
Molandes adds, “At the end of
the day everybody laughs at the

¿No puedes? O ¿No quieres?

Tenía muchos deseos de comer
champiñones salteados, así que
me fui a un restaurante a satisfacer
mi antojito pero cuando miré el
menú no los vi por ningún lado.
Le supliqué a la mesera: “Por
favor, ¿podría hacer una orden
especial para mi? y aseguró: “No
puedo”. ¿Pregúntale al cocinero
si puede cocinarlos? insistí, y
afirmó: “No puedo, solo servimos
lo que ve en el menú”. El gerente
del lugar se acercó a preguntarme
si todo estaba bien. Cuando le expliqué la situación, rápidamente le
preguntó a la mesera sarcásticamente: “¿Sabías que en la cocina
tenemos aceite, champiñones y
ajo? Ella titubeando respondió:
“Sí, lo sé” y molesto le reclamó:
“Entonces, ¿por qué dices que no
puedes?”.
Esta chica, pudo intentar complacer el antojo de una clienta,
pero no quiso hacerlo. El incidente me hizo pensar en todas la
veces que decimos “no puedo”,
cuando la realidad es que NO
queremos hacerlo. Por ejemplo,
alguien que dice: “No puedo
bajar de peso”, verdaderamente
puede hacerlo pero no quiere
pasar por el sacrificio de cambiar
sus hábitos alimenticios y tener
que hacer ejercicio. O quien dice:
“No puedo ahorrar dinero”, por
supuesto que puede pero no quiere abstenerse de sus gustos. De
igual manera una mujer que dice:
“No puedo salir de esta relación
tóxica”, claro que está capacitada
para hacerlo pero no quiere tomar
la decisión porque tiene terror a
estar sola.
Así como estos ejemplos, hay
numerosas situaciones en que no
queremos hacer lo que debemos
y mejor decimos: “No puedo
perdonar”, “no puedo aprender
de computadoras”, “no puedo
subirme a un avión”, “no puedo
ser feliz”.
¡No te engañes! Ciertamente
eres capaz de todo, la mente es
extremadamente poderosa. Sin
embargo, la falta de compromiso, la desidia, las suposiciones
erróneas y sobre todo el miedo,
pueden detenerte a cumplir tus
objetivos.
Reflexiona en aquello que tanto
deseas pero dices que “no puedes”
lograrlo, y luego responde a esta
pregunta: ¿no puedes? o ¿no
quieres? Si eres honesto, te darás
cuenta de que sí puedes, pero no
quieres enfrentar los retos necesarios para alcanzarlo. Acepta que
has evadido hacer los que tienes
que hacer. ¡Cambia esa actitud!
Cree en ti, enfrenta tus temores y
repite: “Yo quiero y yo puedo”.

Free Press Summer Fest

Free Press Summer Fest is
right around the corner and
marks the official start to another
Texas summer.
This year, the ever-growing
FPSF is bursting at the musical
seams from the great music it
brings.
Last year’s sold out event
brought with it some of the best
acts in live music from around
the world and included Arctic
Monkeys, The Postal Service,
and Cat Power among a number
of other greats.
The fairly new festival broke
records last year and sold out
to a huge amount of attendees
all looking for what is quickly
becoming one of the best music
festivals in Texas.

the weekend and that means
bands like The Kills, Die Antoord, DMX, Chvrches and a
huge list of others will also be
in attendance to make the Texas

Sofía Vergara launches new perfume

The Latina bombshell, actress, entrepreneur and style
icon Sofía Vergara has captured
the hearts of audiences everywhere with her down to earth
charm and beauty, and she’s
about to catch our noses.
Recent rumors floating of
the starlet launching a fragrance have been confirmed.
On Thursday, she debuted her
new fragrance, Sofía by Sofía
Vergara on the Home Shopping
Network at midnight. It hits
shelves in September.
The perfume is a pink oriental, floral scent that consists of
key essences of blackberries,
Colombian orchids, roses and
vanilla. The scent reminds Vergara of her childhood, according
to the actress herself.
Colombia was Vergara’s inspiration for Sofía’s creation
and everything from the scent,
color and bottle shape kept her
home country in mind. The glass
bottle is cut with many facets
like an emerald, Colombia’s
native gemstone, and Vergara’s
favorite jewel, which brings on
another opportunity. A jewelry
franchise for Vergara may be
happening soon.
This will be another notch
into Vergara’s entrepreneur
and endorsement resume, which
includes many other brands
such as Cover Girl, K-Mart and
Head and Shoulders. It comes
at an integral time in Vergara’s
career; where she really wanted
to make a brand that represented
her and her ideals, according to
WWD Magazine.
Sophía will sell for $55 for
a 3.4 oz. and $48 for a 1.7 oz.

The perfume bottle is a delicate soft blush and metallic pink
color, which Vergara believes
represents her femininity and
unique style accurately. She
hopes the perfume will help
women feel their most glamorous and irresistible.

said in an interview with WWD.

La trama de “El Señor de los
Cielos” continúa con serie digital

Cielos”, la cual fue vista en promedio por 2,3 millones de televidentes cada noche y que generó
más de 35 millones de visitas
en Telemundo.com, Telemundo
estrenó “El Capítulo Secreto”,
una serie innovadora digital de
siete capítulos que enlazará el
final fulminante de la primera
temporada con el inicio de la
segunda.
A partir del 22 de abril, los
aficionados están descubriendo
el destino de Aurelio Casillas a
través de dos capítulos nuevos
cada semana que los llevarán
al episodio completo que estará
disponible de manera exclusiva

Harris: I’ve never had any, no,
but I am open-minded about it.
But, yes I have had plenty of family members who have so it seems
the paranormal is avoiding me
on purpose. I have quizzed them
about their experiences rigorously
in terms of a sort of skeptical point
of view to get to the bottom of
what it actually was. It is a truly
fascinating subject, and the reason
it is so fascinating is because nobody has come up with a concrete
definition. And science hasn’t

it exist, and if it does exist what
is its source.
LP: What are some of those
experiences that you have been
told about by family or friends?
Harris: My brother woke up in
the middle of the night and saw
someone at the end of the bed, and
he thought there was an intruder
in the house, so he nudged his
girlfriend who also saw someone sitting at the end of the bed,
eventually this person turned its
head looked at them and stood
up, walked along to the side of the
bed and leaned in over them and
stared at them right in the face and
then just vanished right in front of
both of them.
LP: What was it like to film in
a house that had been derelict
for so long? Did it add to the
experience, and were there any
scares on set as a result of it?
Harris: The house sort of had
a business park sort of attached
to it, which was very weird. And
it was abandoned for 15 years.
There was a lot of atmosphere
there though; weirdly the more
modern business center area was
even creepier than the old house.
The modern business part had
been home to some animal testing so there. It was a perfect way
of getting prepared for the mood
of the film, because you would
have to walk through that place to
get to the old Victorian house, It
was really useful in that it would
get you in that mood of science
experiments gone badly wrong.
“The Quiet Ones” is now playing in theatres.

Texas Frightmare Weekend 8: TFW lives!

Querida Nina:
Tengo un problema grave y
no sé cómo solucionarlo. Yo
tengo 26 años, estoy casada
desde hace tres años y tengo
una hija de 2. Mis padres se
divorciaron cuando yo tenía
15 años por una infidelidad de
mi papá. Cuando pasó todo eso
yo me regresé a vivir a México
con mi mamá y mis hermanos.
Ahora que ya vivo en San Antonio con mi esposo me gusta
que mi mamá venga de vez en
cuando a visitarnos. Además le
dejo a veces a mi bebé cuando
viajo con mi esposo, pero en
27 de abril de 2014
esta ocasión se trata de mi segundo embarazo. Resulta que
yo tengo a mi segundo bebé en
junio y tenía pensado pagarle el
boleto de avión (como siempre lo
hago) a mi mamá para que viniera
a ayudarme un mes, y su novio,
con quien ya lleva cinco años, no
quiere que ella venga.
Esta última vez que fui a México pude darme cuenta de que el
novio de mi mamá tiene muchos
celos de mí y de mi hija. Lo noté
por su manera de ser y su manera
de tratarnos. Se expresaba mal de
mi bebé porque decía que cuando
ella está de visita mi mamá ni lo
voltea a ver.
Quizá tenga razón pero por otro
lado yo siento feo porque no creo
que él quiera tanto a mi madre,
pues para empezar ya le hubiera
propuesto matrimonio o le hubiera gustado formalizar con ella.
Ahora no sé cómo decirle a mi
mamá que ya no me da tanta confianza ese hombre y que creo que
estar con él no es su mejor opción.
Querida hija desesperada:
Entiendo tu angustia y tu de-
sesperación por querer arreglar
esta situación, pero aquí a quien
le corresponde solucionar este
problema es a tu mamá y a nadie
más. Yo creo que debe de ser
difícil estar grande y separarse
de una persona con quien ya
llevas cinco años compartiendo
una relación, sin embargo en lo
que tú podrías participar sería en
abrirle los ojos a ella y decirle que
definitivamente ese hombre solo
la verá como su novia eterna, pues
si dices que a esa edad después de
cinco años no le ha propuesto matrimonio o le ha insinuado querer
formalizar, quiere decir que no
está muy seguro de querer vivir
bajo el mismo techo que tu madre
y tener que pagarle sus deudas.
De igual manera, coméntale a
tu mamá que si toma buenas decisiones y hace entender a su novio
que su hija está primero y que no
teme a estar sola, quizá logre que
el hombre cambie de opinión y
finalmente se dé cuenta de lo que
tiene frente a él.

Texas. There is no

of hardcore horror

convention.

to be part of the experience, meet their horror icon
heroes, and mingle with other
people just as passionate about
horror as themselves.
In previous, years Texas
Frightmare Weekend has hosted
hundreds of icon legends like
John Carpenter, Stewart Gordon, Clive Barker and the cast
of AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”
This is an especially exciting
year that will include a huge list
of celebrity guests that include
the father of zombies himself
George A. Romero, Jigsaw from
the “Saw” franchise (Tobin Bell),
“The Exorcist’s” Linda Blair,
“You’re Next’s” Sharni Vinson
and many others.
Texas Frightmare Weekend already has an outstanding lineup,
but where they really outdo
themselves is with the cast reunions that they are going to
have this year that include cast
members from “The Terminator”
franchise, “Hellraiser,“ “Aliens”
and “The Creature from the
Black Lagoon.”
Friday night starting at 9 p.m.
Texas Frightmare Weekend
will host a Night of the Demons
themed party hosted by none other
than “Angela”
herself (Amelia Kinkade) the
party will feature
guest DJ Twiggy
Ramirez formerly
of Marilyn Manson’s band.
TFW will also
host movie screenings throughout
the event, which
will include
“Repo! The Genetic Opera, a
North American
Premiere of “Zombie TV” a world
Premiere of “Circus of the Dead”
and a handful of
others.
It is sure to be an
amazing event that
will out do all previous years in wall to wall horror fans dreams (or nightmares)
come true.
All this and a whole lot more
is on its way to TFW in Dallas
