イギリスの小説には、自の色や形の表現が数多くみられる。特に青い目の表現では、花の名
前を使ったものや、 b

eという語と他の詩を組み合わせた形で目の色の微妙な違いを表現して
いる。目の形に似ているため、木の実の色や形を目の形容としているものも多くみられる。ま
た宝石類もその輝きが目の輝きを連想せるためか、日の表現にはよくつかわれる。
はじめに
イギリスの小説には様々な色の目をした人物が登場する。日本人の場合は目の色は一般的に
は黒であるが、イギリス人の場合は目の色は多様であり、さらにイギリス人以外、白人以外の
人も登場するので、目の色の違いによって人物を鮮やかに表現することができるのであろう。
目の色や形に関していろいろな形容がされている。

世紀中ごろまでのイギリスの小説を中心に調べてみた。
1.木の実
日本語で、どんぐり眼という表現があるが、日本人の目の色はたいてい黒なので、どんぐり
色ではなく、どんぐりのような形の日という意味になる。英語の場合は、様々な目の色をした
人がいるので、木の実は目の色の表現としても使われる。もちろん木の実の形が目の形を連想
させるので、このような表現があると考えられる。

これまで、目の色の表現の仕方を中心に見てきたが、最後に、動物などの生き物の目に似て
いるとする表現をまとめておきたい。この場合は色彩ではなく、目の形、特に表情のようなも
のを思い起こさせる目を表しているようである。

日本語には、驚いて日を丸くしている様子を表す「鳩が豆鉄砲を食ったよう」という表現が
ある。英語で鳩のような目という場合は、驚きなどの一時的な状態に関係なく、大きく見開い

形ではなく色に関してで、一番表現の種類が多かったのは青色であった o 青い目がほかの色
に比べて美しいとして好まれているためではないかと思われる。緑や灰色の目に関しでもさま
ざまな表現が見られた。
