This bright and colourful naïve oral design includes both wool and needleturn
applique and embroidery techniques and some additional hexagon patchwork.
This hand sewn project can be adapted to suit a pillow, wall hanging or framed

these days that lend themselves to this technique. Batiks, hand dyes or
marbled fabrics all create the illusion of light through a window. This

I have been quilting and quilt making for almost twenty years and have been sharing with students my love
of hand quilting and needleturn appliqué for more than ten years. During class my emphasis is always on
the building of skills and techniques in a relaxed and happy environment. I have judged in state exhibitions
and taught in country Victoria and interstate for various guilds, groups and businesses. I have received a
number of awards for my quilts over the past 8 years, including the Narelle Grieve Award for Excellence
in Hand Quilting (2013 and 2010) as well as Excellence in Hand Quilting on a number of occasions for
the Melbourne and/or Adelaide Quilt Shows (2013, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007) and Best of Show
Adelaide (2010). I taught on the 2013 Needlework Cruise.
Jane has been teaching patchwork and quilting for over eighteen years. Her passion for Japanese Textiles
commenced over 22 years ago. Her business, BeBe Bold, commenced eight years ago, as a natural
progression from her teaching and enables her to showcase the beauty, quality and craftsmanship of
both traditional and contemporary Japanese textiles. She has a passion for using Japanese fabrics in many
different ways – from quilts to bags, clothing to table runners and cushions. Jane teaches in Australia and
the UK, has had a number of projects published in Down Under Quilts magazine and makes frequent trips
to Japan to source new and interesting fabrics and products. Jane taught on the 2014 Needlework Cruise to

JMac1 Sashiko Panel
Arabesque
This intricate design using batik on silk is stitched in hand needleturn
applique and is based on Julie’s full size quilt of the same name. Julie’s
stitch work is exquisite and it’s no surprise her quilts have received awards
at the Melbourne and Adelaide Quilt Shows. Size: 50cm x 50cm.
Sashiko, literally meaning “little stabs”, is a form of decorative
reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan.
Traditionally used to reinforce points of wear, or to repair worn places
or tears with patches, this running stitch technique is often used for
purely decorative purposes in quilting and embroidery. The white cotton
thread on the traditional indigo blue cloth gives Sashiko its distinctive
appearance. Sometimes red thread is used or coloured threads on off
white fabric. Two designs. Colours: red, navy blue, black, putty (green) or
white fabric. Size: 138cm x 88cm.

My earliest memories are connected with fabric and pattern. I have distinct memories of things I made and
wore, fabric type, pattern etc. When my children were very young I stumbled upon patchwork and quilting
– it was a pivotal moment. I have been teaching patchwork and quilting for 15 years around Melbourne and
interstate. I am, primarily, a hand piecer and hand quilter however I will happily rotary cut and machine
piece a quilt for a pattern or workshop. I design and sell my patterns in Australia and overseas. I like to impart
as much knowledge as I can to my students and inspire and enable them to go on and create their own
versions of my quilts and indeed their own designs.

At a very young age I was introduced to sewing after being given a hand crank machine to play with. My
mother, a seamstress, discouraged my desire to draw pictures with my machine, insisting that machines were
for making clothes. Although I went on to design and manufacture clothing, I’ve always wanted to draw with
my machine. I have specialized in portraying nature scenes with an emphasis on foliage, fur, feathers and
fins! I use free motion techniques such as thread painting, collage appliqué, and photographic fabric in my
work. All my embroidery is free motion (hand guided). I have demonstrated and taught workshops since 2006
onwards and I teach regularly in Launceston.

MC1 Australian Gum Flower
and Leaves
This tiny bird, no bigger than a sparrow, is full of colour. Kerrie-Anne
will explain how to transform the original photo into a design, and then
using Kerrie-Anne’s design you will create a pictorial quilt using raw edge
appliqué. First the background is created with transparent paint, then
shiva stick and opaque paint are used for details. Thread painting will give
character to the bottlebrush. Then free motion quilting will complete the
quilt. Size: 40cm x 40cm.
This is a beautiful project featuring the iconic gum flower, gum nut and
leaf skeletons. Each strand of the eight strand twisted cord will conclude in
a realist leaf, nut or flower using free motion sewing and thread painting.
We will complete three leaves and a flower and attach them, then use the
remaining time to complete more flowers, nuts or leaves. This will enable
each person to choose what component they stitch and individualise their

I began quilting 24+ years ago. Since then I have made more than 500 quilts, collected far more fabric than
any one person has a chance of using in a lifetime, made some enduring friendships, extended my limits and
become totally besotted with all aspects of patchwork and quilting. I have been teaching my favoured scrap
quilts for 24 years and continue to develop classes on the scrappy theme. With my help you can put a new
spin on a very traditional quilt, a modern quilt or a special art piece using scraps. I have taught extensively
in New Zealand at national symposia, weekend residentials and at clubs. My quilts have been juried into 9
national symposia, 7 national association exhibitions and biennial challenges. Several of my quilts are now in
overseas collections. www.nataliemurdoch.co.nz
The pleasure of teaching is what inspires most of the quilts I make today, as well as my love for design. My
quilts are primarily hand appliqué using a freezer paper method and quick and easy, machine appliquéd,
pieced and quilted. Quilt and Appliqué as you Sew projects are another joy. I teach regular classes on the
NSW central coast, in other Australian states, on Norfolk Island and in New Zealand. I am an accredited
teacher with the NSW Quilters Guild. Many of my quilts have been published in Australian magazines with
two appearing on the front covers. Some of my larger queen sized, hand appliquéd quilts have won prizes at
the NSW Quilt Exhibition and the Victorian Quilt Showcase.

In this can-do class you will master techniques that will give you a
confident start on your art quilt adventure: accurate piecing both straight
and curved; fabric manipulation; regular, reversed and soft-edged
appliqué; free-motion quilting and embroidery and layering both fabric
and colour all to achieve the results you have been striving for. And then
there is the quilting that adds flair and colour - it is not just a way to finish
off. Students will complete a small wall-hanging that will encapsulate
many skills. It will be a sample to refer to as you develop your own style
for art or contemporary quilting. Size: 60cm x 42cm.

At the end of the day you will have sufficient hearts to make a good-sized

but also have the time to learn about your neighbour as it is such a
relaxed class (more like an old-fashioned quilting bee).

Autumn Curves grew out of Pam’s love for appliqué and it is an experience

way to quilt and appliqué at the same time. Autumn Curves is quilted and
appliqued as you stitch on your sewing machine. Learn how simple it will
be to adapt this method to any quilt you make. You will make the centre
block only. Size: 22 inch square.
SKILL LEVEL: All skill levels of quilters will enjoy mastering the many
techniques offered in this project.
SKILL LEVEL: All welcome.

I have been a lifetime sewer having taught full time with NSW TAFE for ten years and hold a Diploma of
Teaching in Fashion. While there, I evolved into a specialist creative needlecraft teacher. During the past four
years I have been developing my skills as a Modern Quilter and in that time have created more than twentyfour quilts, all of which I have designed myself. Recently I have stitched a number of quilted bags, placemats,
children’s clothing and other items for sale at local craft stalls and the Port Stephens Community Art Centre.
Heavily inspired by my surroundings, the camera is always on the ready and the design books are filling faster
than I can make the quilts. I have the optimism and desire to motivate others to see the beauty and fulfilment
in creating "one off" textile pieces for the enjoyment of their family and friends.

You’ll have fun exploring the art of fussy cutting to create a wide range of
hexagon blocks. Using varied techniques, including the use of mirrors,
you’ll identify suitable elements in fabric designs to create kaleidoscopic
effects in the blocks. The hexagons can be pieced together to complete
a quilt top. Alternatively they can be framed or used to create a cushion
cover or bag. Size: Finished is 60” x 65” (152cm x 165cm) and can be
adjusted to desired size.

blocks will be demonstrated (e.g. hand appliqué). The elephant block

Value quilts are a great way to display many beautiful fabrics. They can be
made as large or as small as you want and look equally striking displayed
