As I sat down to write this edition of the MRQ newsletter I had just dropped my children off for their first day of school. Yes, our rainy summer was over and it was back to work for all of us. I started to think that is seems like just yesterday that our family moved here and our daughter Savannah was joining a kindergarten class already in its second month of class. Now she is the big kid at school in the 6th grade! Time is flying by...which brings me to the fact that Mission Rose is celebrating our 5th anniversary in September! It’s hard to believe!! We are going to commemorate this milestone by launching our own line of patterns - Mission Rose Designs with lead designers Carol Kozlowski and Connie Ostness. We will debut our first pattern, Five Roses and Counting, at our Teacher’s Day Saturday September 19. Stop by to see our beautiful quilt and pick up your kit. I’ll show you how to tat with a needle to create lacy edgings and embellishments for your quilting and other projects. I have lots of ideas and samples to show you what can be done with this beautiful accent. Book required. $20 Sat October 3 10:00 - 12:00 Wait till you see this!! Only two simple beading techniques are required to make a gorgeous brooch. Kits by Embellishment Village contain everything you need, the hard part is choosing one from our great selection. This brooch can also be worn as a pendant if you wish. Kit required. $20 Pumpkins Sat October 10 10:00 - 2:00 Do you like to embroider? This lovely wall hanging is pieced, with touches of embroidery for a one of a kind decoration. Basic embroidery stitches will be covered and a folded border technique discussed. Pattern required. $25 “Go Green” Bag Days Thursday October 29 & December 31 Crazy Quilting Sat November 21 10:00 - 3:00 This is a beginner class on the basics of crazy quilting. Discussions on color choice, flip and sew piecing and embellishments will get us started. We’ll make a 5” square from beginning to end. Charm packs are perfect for this project, it’s color coordinated. Thimbleberries Club 2009 3’s Company Oct 8, Nov 12 & Dec 10 10:30 - 11:30 am OR 6:30 - 7:30 pm Friday Night Strippers The strip club at MRQ is open this summer from 5:30 - 10:30 on Friday Oct 30, Nov 20 & Dec 18 Join us for fun times making projects using 2 1/2 inch strips. You are also welcome to come in and work on one of your own projects. Entry fee is purchase of that night’s project or $15 if you elect to do your own thing. Come and join in on the fun! We will be doing a simple, elegant, smocked Christmas ornament. Continuing on with the stitches that were taught in Smocking I. There may even be some glitz thrown in for fun! Smocking I required. $20 plus kit fee ($5 paid in class). Double Pocket Purse Saturday November 28 10:00 - 4:00 What a great bag! Pockets galore and very stylish. Yes, there is a zipper but do not be afraid-I will get you through it. I promise. Make one using the cozy winter fabrics and then make another with all the cheerful Spring prints that are coming in! Pattern required. $35 Classes with Pat Sanaker “Cotton Theory” Button Back Runner Saturday November 7 10:00 - 4:00 Make a wonderful runner the “Cotton Theory” way. Come and see what this technique is all about. A unique way to quilt first and then assemble making a quilt that is pieced on both sides so it is totally reversible and quilted when you are done. Also put to use all those decorative stitches on your sewing machine. The added bonus is the wonderful dimension on one side of the quilt from the seam construction. You will be amazed how fun and easy it is. Pattern required. $35 Cathedral Windows Sat November 21 10:00 - 3:00 Have you always admired the beautiful Cathedral Window quilts and wondered "how do they do it"? This class will show you how to do the Classic Folded technique. Once you see how easy it is to make this block, there will be no end to the variety of Cathedral Window projects you can make. Book required. $30 Classes with Joanne Bradley Fabric Lovers’ Anonymous Friday October 9 Birdie Sling Friday October 2 10:00 - 8:00 It’s fall, and time to get to those holiday gifts and projects you started months ago. Here’s your opportunity to do something about those piles in your sewing room. Morning snacks will be provided; bring your lunch, and we’ll order takeout for dinner. No formal instruction, but lots of support! $10 for the day. We all love our tote bags, don't we? Come for two Thursday evenings and relax for a few hours of stitching, whether it be red, blue, or multicolored! Basic stitches will be reviewed. Suggested pattern is the Seasonal Patchwork Sampler. $25 Class Policies It's a Wrap Sunday October 11 12:00 - 4:00 If you're looking for a new skill to add to your repertoire, this is the class for you. Learn to make a basic wrapped bowl. Once you learn the basic technique wrapping the fabric, it goes quickly, and the bowl shapes up on the machine in about an hour. This is ideal for getting rid of scraps, using coordinated fabric lines, holiday fabrics, or batiks. Guaranteed to be relaxing. You'll have lots of fun and leave with a finished project. You'll just be bowled over!! Book required. $25 > Registration may be made in person, by telephone or on-line. Fees for classroom instruction do not include fabric, books or patterns unless otherwise stated. > In order to be considered registered for a class your class fee must be paid when you sign up. Saturday Nov 14 12:00 – 4:00 The Basics and Beyond of Classes with Julia Bliven Quilting the Wild Side September 27 12:00 – 2:00 & October 4 12:00 – 4:00 Create spectacular wildlife scenes using the Alaska Wildlife Collection from Willow Bend Patterns. You will make a wall hanging from your choice of patterns in this series. A perfect gift for your favorite guy! Class #1 teaches the tracing and intricate cutting of the pattern and fusible appliquéing of the design to the background fabric. Class #2 teaches the machine quilting and thread play techniques of the fused appliqué and background of the wall hanging. This is an excellent class for further machine quilting practice. Learn how to do free motion quilting of marked and unmarked designs, outlining, grid patterns, meandering and stippling to quilt your quilt. No experience necessary and repeating students are welcome to join us and refresh their skills. Your sewing machine must be able to drop the feed dogs and have a free motion attachment. Book suggested. $30 Beginning Quilting Thurs October 15, 22, 29 & November 5 6:00 - 8:00 pm This is the course for the beginner with limited to no skills of rotary cutting or machine piecing. Select from two projects: either a large table runner or a lap size quilt. See the samples on display in the shop. You will learn the following skills: accurate cutting and sewing of quilt blocks, accurate machine piecing, sewing blocks into rows, layering the three sections of the quilt sandwich, machine quilting and finishing by sewing the binding. You’ll learn how to use the quilting tools and all the quilting vocabulary to give you the confidence to read a pattern and take on a project by yourself. Start with me and I’ll lead you into the wonderful world of quilting. You will NOT be a beginner by the end! Also a great refresher course for advanced beginners; select the lap sized quilt and review and refine your skills. A sewing machine in good working order is required. We’ll talk about surface embellishments and beading. This little table runner makes a great gift. Pattern required. $30 This small project is a great way to learn a few surface embellishment techniques. The sunflower pattern has 3 different sizes so it can be made to embellish a purse, tote bag, shirt or be a stand alone wall hanging. You’ll learn how to use fusible web, add details with thread play and fibers, make lace yarn and add beads. Pattern required, bead kit available. $30 Dresden Plate Tablerunner Saturday October 10 10:00 – 3:00 This Dresden Plate block is quick and easy, and best of all done all on your sewing machine. That’s right- no needle turn appliqué! Instead you’ll learn how to make the plate wedges by machine and machine appliqué onto the background. Pattern required. $30 After Christmas Retreat “Day-cation” With Carol & the Monday Sew Mates Monday October 12 10:00 - 3:00 It is a day filled with sewing, socializing and snacking! Cost is the purchase of 2 FQ. Which will be raffled off at 2:00. Monday & Tuesday Dec 28 & 29 10:00 - 4:00 Christmas is over and the gifts returned. Now it’s time for some quality quilting time in the company of like minded people. Join us for two days of uninterrupted sewing.
