patchwords - Saint Andrew Bay Quilters` Guild
September 2015 PATCHWORDS President’s Letter September 2015 Hey Quilters, It was nice to celebrate our wonderful guild and all of you wearing red and white, especially with the special SABQG logos. We need to do this every year! Go SABQG! The Yard Sale was wonderful, I hope you were able to get some treasures and empty out your sewing room. Thank you for all the donations to the guild’s table, most of it was sold, a small amount was left over which was donated to the Humane Society Thrift Shop. The books that remained were put aside for sale at the Quilt Show Boutique. I have extended the name tag challenge, I’m looking for a simple and easy design that any level quilter can complete. The idea is to encourage new or longtime members to make a name tag, whether you’re a beginner or a skilled quilter. Put on your thinking hats and let’s see some fun and simple name tags at the next meetings. This year's President's Challenge is called "Strings are things that go bump in the night", I know my strings seem to multiply and I'm sure yours have as well. So my challenge is about using up some of your “strings” before they can multiply, the only requirement is you must include some portion of my pre-selected 2 1/2" string (they will be available at the meetings) and in at least 4 different places throughout the quilt. You can sign up at the meeting and pick up your string. Best of all have fun and make something you will enjoy, remember they will have to be completed by the May joint meeting and a winner will be chosen. September is “Wear your Pretty Apron” month, those aprons you love but don't really want to mess up, it's time to show them off and we would love to see them. Sarah is planning a UFO swap, so if you come across any, while you are looking for those multiplying strings, bring them to the program meeting, someone would like to give them a loving home. Let’s hope September brings some cooler weather in time for Retreat at Laguna Beach. You can still sign up but you will need to get your reservations and money in to Jennifer or RuthASAP. Get busy making a quilt for the Quilt Show, it will be wonderful this year at the Holley Center. The Board went for a visit after the August Board meeting and it is a fabulous place for our show. Great job Beverly and Jo-Ellen! Remember last year we had those wonderful programs at the show? If we all work together we can get those ads sold and that would cover the printing expenses for this year’s program. Betty Marler has the forms for the ads and copies of last year’s programs available. Show them a program when you ask about placing an ad and that may be just what it takes to seal the deal. The extra programs will be available at the meetings. Stay safe, stay cool and always in stitches, Carolyn Pic 1 September 2015 Abbreviated Minutes of the August 19 SABQG Day Meeting Ladies, if you weren’t at the meeting, you missed it. Jo Ellen said we are in good shape. 20 ½ spaces and 11 vendors. Boutique, Helen Russo, showed a few items she has received for the boutique. Jo Ellen spoke about the trip to Ruthies notions. She asked that in the future if you sign up for something, please don’t back out. We were lucky that 2 members that didn’t sign up were there so we were able to get the free machines. We got 2, one to raffle at the Quilt Show, and the other to be won by a drawing of names of those who attended the event. The winner of that machine was Linda Tew. Show and tell, Red and white quilts were featured, and the other lovely quilts were shown. Reminders: Turn in finished name tags in September for judging. September is wear your apron month. See you next month Ruth 4 September 2015 WHO Is Lisa Lenhoff? Q: Who is Lisa? A: I was born and raised in Chillicothe, MO. After I tuned 30, I left the area to finish my Bachelor's and get a Master's in wildlife biology. My husband and I have been together for 11 years, but married for only one year. I have 6 adult step-children and the 18th grandchild will be here in September. Q: Have you worked outside the home? If so, what type of occupation? A: I started working at 14 as a babysitter and have worked continually since then. It is not uncommon for me to have more than one job at a time or to have a small business and a full time job. I currently work for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a Fish and Wildlife Biologist. My current duties are working on sea turtle recovery, listing packages for two freshwater turtles, and Air Force liaison for Section 7 consolations. Q: Tell me about interests or hobbies you have besides quilting. A: I had many teachers growing up and started learning simple sewing and cooking skills before I went to kindergarten. I garden, both vegetable and flower, when I have a yard or room for a patio garden. I use to have a craft business with my mother and I made woodworking items out of old barn wood. I still make items that I need around the house. Q: How long have you been quilting? Tell us about your first quilt. A: My first quilt was made out of blocks I painted with fabric paints when I was in grade school. My grandmother pieced the quilt for me when I has in the 4th grade. My first completed quilt top was made when I was in high school as a 4-H project. I have been steadily quilting for the past 20 years. Q: What quilting techniques do you most enjoy? A: Paper piecing and up-cycling fabrics Q: Who has inspired you most as a quilter and how? A: My grandmother Lehnhoff. She was an immaculate scrappy quilter. Q: What are you working on now? A: Unfinished UFOs and un-started fabric kits. I am also starting a small project quilt pattern company. Q: Just one more, tell me a little known fact about Lisa. A: I have a cookie cutter collection. I have been collection cutters for about 30 years. I do not use them 5 for cookies, but have used them for fabric cutouts and shapes. September 2015 Alana Yuratich recently had the pleasure of meeting Jenny Doan of The Missouri Star Quilt Company. Congratulations to Ann Marie Voight! She is the Golden Needle winner for August. Can I still use them as it won’t show after the pieces are sewn? I had always heard that they couldn’t be used, but they make entire quilts out of selvedge strips now. Sincerely, Ooops Dear Ooops, This has happened to Aunt Bea as well. The pesky selvedges are not always the same width or when I go to fold the fabric I don't get it quite together. The main issue of using selvedges is the heavier threads that are on the outside of the fabric and of course, we can sometimes see the pin holes. The heavier threads are there to stabilize the edges when the fabric is woven, and since they are heavier they tend to shrink more and pull up when washed. Now Aunt Bea does sometimes use a piece that has a little selvedge on it provided it isn't the very outside edge where the threads are the heaviest. It doesn't show and even if it is washed, it is such a small length it will not pull up very much. However, Aunt Bea has seen where some people leave the selvedges on fabric they use to piece a quilt back. This is a very bad idea. Always either trim off the selvedges where you will seam the backing or cut into the selvedges to release the tension of those outer heavier threads. Wishing both Aunt Bea and Oops fewer selvedges. Aunt Bea P.S. The quilts made from selvedges are fun and I would love to see how one looked after it is washed. 7 September 2015 Comfort Quilts Since you haven’t seen me in a while, I thought I would let you know we are still in the North Georgia Mountains. We will be home in a couple of weeks. Thanks to everyone who has stepped in to help with collecting the quilts and bibs that are being turned in. It has been a very big help. Sure hope to be able to have enough to make a donation to the Head Start Program and also to the Catholic Charities groups. If you have not had a chance to help out with these projects yet, there is still time before I get home to get a quilt or bib finished. Then I will take a count and prepare the quilts and bibs for donation. Only piecing has been going on for me as I am limited on space. But it gives me such a good feeling to make a project for donation. Try it and you will see how good it feels. Mary Molinari and I will be passing out the quilts on the Betsy Ann on September 13th. This gives us an opportunity to visit with the Veterans and to individually thank them for their service. Thank you for all your support with this project. You made it possible! It will be a pleasure and honor to distribute these quilts of love to our Veterans. Linda Kelley and Mary Molinari Thoughts About a Hug It's wondrous what a hug can do, A hug can cheer you when you're blue. A hug can say, "I love you so," Or, "Gee, I hate to see you go." A hug is "Welcome back again!" And "Great to see you!" or "Where have you been?" A hug can sooth a small child's pain And bring a rainbow after rain. The hug! There's just no doubt about it, A hug delights and warms and charms, It must be why God gave us arms. Hugs are great for fathers and mothers, Sweet for sisters, swell for brothers. And chances are some favorite aunts Love them more than potted plants. Kittens crave them. Puppies love them. Heads of States are not above them. A hug can breach the language barrier, And make the dullest day seem merrier. No need to fret about the store of 'em, The more you give, the more there are of 'em! So now, stretch out your arms without delay And give someone a wondrous hug today. Author unknown 11 September 2015 12 September 2015 QUILT SHOW REPORT Our Quilt Show Team has been working hard to complete arrangements for the show. As you know we have Committee Chairman for each area and we’re very grateful for that support. Our show is not only an exhibit of quilts but a demonstration of the kind of work our members are willing to commit to. I’m not speaking of just the show, but the work you do to help others from little children to veterans. Be proud of yourselves. So, we have made arrangement for a judge. Her name is Jane C. Hall and she is from Raleigh, NC. She is an NQA certified judge. We look forward to meeting her. We have made all the ribbon awards for the quilts – 57 of them. Sarah Hutton rallied the forces, so we really had a team effort to get them done. She is going to name all of the workers for you. Now that we have a judge and ribbons, we need quilts to put those ribbons on. So now comes your part. I can’t wait to see what you come up with. (I hope to see many flying geese arriving at our show!) The Opportunity Quilt tickets are in Carol Schulz’s hands and she’ll have them ready for you in September. Please support the Guild by selling these tickets. Our Opportunity Quilt is close to the finish line. Quilt makers were Sue Gulkis and Sue Elliott. Maching quilting accomplished by Jo-Ellen Rogers. As par for our group, it is a stunner. Jo-Ellen has kept her internet busy contacting vendors and we are happy to say that our vendor slots are all filled! Our vendors are: Junebug Quilting, Jim’s Sewing, Martelli Enterprises, Quilting Gypsy, PT Quilting, Origami Owl, M-Square Creations, Elaine’s Attic, The Quilting Squares, The Village Mercantile, and Color by Hand. Three cheers to Jo-Ellen. Many members of the Guild attended a program at Ruthie’s Notions in Baker and in recognition of our attendance we received two sewing machines. One of the machines will be raffled at the Quilt Show. One machine was raffled to the members who attended and was won by Linda Tew. If you happen to travel to Ruthie’s please tell her that you’re a member of SABQ and thank her for giving us the machine to raffle. Lastly, Betty Marler is busy working on publicity and also the program for the show. She is looking for advertisers for the booklet. If you have a suggestion for her please contact her. I’m sure that she would appreciate your contacts. Happy Quilting, Happy Quilters and Smiling Faces to you.
