After the winter we had, I just could not resist. Consequently, the shop is jam packed with some of the most beautiful fabrics we have ever seen. Autumn (you all know how much we love Autumn at MRQ!), Christmas and lots of bright, bold fabrics are gracing our shelves. Our sample makers are busy making some gorgeous quilts to inspire you. So take a break from the heat and stop in this summer and check Mark your calendars … it out. There is definitely something for everyone! Fabulous Fall Teacher’s Day See you soon … Mary Sunday Sept 11 A New Shop Hop in New York State! Mission Rose has joined the NYS Row by Row Quilt Shop Hop. This is a fun and different hop! No passports and no fees to join. Just stop in to any of the participating shops any time during the months of July and August. Tell them you are hopping row by row and you will receive a free pattern for one row in a Summertime Row Quilt. Collect as many rows as you like and design your quilt. This hop is brand new, easy and a whole lot of fun. Visit the Facebook page, be one of the first to “like” the page, and you will be in on the ground floor of this new event. Do you have a fabric with a great print you just can’t cut? Sharyn Craig has a new ruler to help fuel your acrylic addiction! She also has a great pattern to go along with it. Combine all of the above and you get great ideas on what to do with your orphan blocks or great fabric. The ruler makes it easy to do borders that look very difficult but are quite easy. Barbara is going to show you all the twisting tricks using the Twister tool. This project is perfect for those 5” charm square and the Lil Twister tool. This easy to make wool sheep and punch needle blanket is just the ticket. Once the sheep is constructed, we’ll make a blanket using a punch needle. Great project for those with experience and for new punch needlers!!! There are several blanket patterns available, simply choose your favorite for a fun easy class. Patterns required. $20 Needle Tatting Sunday July 17 12:00 – 3:00 pm Learn this age old craft with a NEEDLE not a SHUTTLE. All the basics are covered in class which will enable you to create beautiful lacy edgings and embellishments for all your projects. We’ll make a round medallion that can be used for an ornament, sewn on a quilt or glued to a note card. I’ll have lots of samples of tatting to share with you. Made from a Bali-Pop or Jelly Rolls this quilt is a snap to make and oh so beautiful. Chain piecing makes construction fast and easy. Book required. $20 Saturday Sept 24 10:00 – 2:00 pm Another great idea from Nancy Halverson! Quilted gift bags! What a great way to make your gift for that special someone even more precious! This 12” x 25” bag is as cute as can be. I’ll show you an easy machine quilted pattern you’ll find useful for the bag and other quilted projects. Book required. $15 Classes with Julia Bliven Beginning Quilting Thursdays July 14, 21, 28 & Aug 4 5:30 - 8:00 pm This is the course for the beginner with limited to no skills of rotary cutting or machine piecing. Select from two projects: either a large table runner or a lap size quilt. You will learn the following skills: accurate cutting and sewing of quilt blocks, accurate machine piecing, sewing blocks into rows, layering the three sections of the quilt sandwich, machine quilting and finishing by sewing the binding. You’ll learn how to use the quilting tools and all the quilting vocabulary to give you the confidence to read a pattern and take on a project by yourself. Start with me and I’ll lead you into the wonderful world of quilting. A sewing machine in good working order and a 1/4 inch foot attachment required. Student should have knowledge of basic machine sewing. Finishing Class Borders, Binding, Labels & Sleeve, oh my! Tuesday July 26 10:00 - 1:00 pm Advice and hands-on help on all the finishing steps for your quilt. Julia will demonstrate how to properly cut and sew on the borders; how to attach a binding with a professional look; how to sew the sleeve which is essential for hanging the wall quilt; and finally, how to make a label to document your work. No finished product for this class; just lots of advice and suggestions, OR just bring a notebook and watch and take notes. Great refresher class for everybody. $10 Learn Free Motion Quilting Saturday July 30 12:00 – 3:30 pm A new book with new exercises that answer that last direction in a pattern: “Quilt as Desired.” This class offers a new approach to free motion quilting. Put your sewing machine to work; learn to “draw” with your needle and guide it to do machine quilting for you. Techniques covered: free motion quilting of marked and unmarked designs, outlining, grid patterns, meandering and stippling. In one session you will have the knowledge and confidence to put your new skills into practice. Class focuses on techniques, not a finished product. No experience necessary and repeat students are welcome to join us and refresh their skills. Your sewing machine must be able to drop the feed dogs and have a free motion attachment. Book required. $30 Classes with Carol Kozlowski Winning Hand Saturday July 16 10:00 - 4:00 pm This traditional quilt is striking but quick to make when you use the Quilt in a Day method. The block requires 5 fabrics: a great one to use a fabric collection on. This is a beginner friendly quilt pattern. We’ll take you through the steps to make the large block and have it perfect every time. Bet you can’t make just one! Book required. $35 Summer 2011 is all about Applique! If you have never tried it, then now is definitely the time. Carol is offering 4 different classes. Oh yeah, did we mention she likes flowers! Sunflower Raw Edge Appliqué Saturday July 30 10:00 - 4:00 pm No Sewing Machines Starflower Wool Appliqué Saturday July 23 10:00 - 4:00 pm This Jacobean flower is a great beginner project. You’ll learn about different types of wool, how to cut and place your pieces and several stitches to sew them down with. No machine required for this class. This is a Mission Rose exclusive! Pattern required. $35 Everybody loves sunflowers - they are such happy flowers. Come spend a day making this small raw edge appliqué wall hanging. You’ll learn about using fusible products, how to mark your background, place you pieces and finish the edges. Pattern required. $35 Flower Boxes Magic Vine Sundays August 7 & 14 12:00 - 4:00 pm This is also a beginner friendly project. You’ll learn appliqué basics while we make the scalloped edge wall hanging We’ll cover finished edge appliqué, the appliqué stitch, how to scallop the edges and how to finish the edges. Book required. $35 Sat August 13 10:00 - 4:00 pm This is a new class where you will create your “flower boxes” using raw edge appliqué. You’ll learn how to use fusible web for raw edge appliqué, how to mark the background for placement and how to embellish the flower centers with simple yoyo’s. You’ll finish the edges using the “fancy stitches” on your sewing machine. This is a beginner friendly class and is a stunning summer quilt. Pattern required. $35 Bag Lady Series with Joanne Bradley I never thought I would call myself a bag lady, but here I am,! Join me in making a different bag each month for the next 3 months. You can make one or make all three, it’s up to you: Pockets a Plenty Wednesday July 13 10:00 - 3:00 pm Here’s a whimsical bag with lots of pockets and optional closure. It lends itself to multiple categories of fabrics. Use it as a large purse or tote: it’s handy either way. Be creative and add buttons or rick rack to jazz it up. Pattern required. Cross Town Carry: Linda’s Bag Saturday July 23 10:00 - 4:00 pm Fun and fast with three different sections including organizer pockets and flap closures. This bag is perfect for all age groups and looks great in any fabric. Basic quilting skills are required, but believe me, it’s not rocket science. Pattern required. $30 Ladies Choice Wednesday August 17 10:00 - 3:00 pm Did you miss a class or do you have a favorite bag from the shop you would like to make? No, don’t eat it; SEW it into a creative quilt top in just a few hours. It’s the hottest idea for using 2 1/2 inch strips. The Jelly Roll 1600 is a no stress method, using easy, straight sewing. Spend a summer day with Julia and Joanne and have so much fun, you’ll be planning your second quilt before the first one is done.
