AUGUST 2009
Hello Quilters!
We have lots of exciting news this month!
Our web site will soon feature kits for sale! We are in the process of setting up our web site for online sales, and will be starting with kit offerings within the next few weeks! We are very excited to be starting
sales on-line, and are looking forward to adding this avenue for quilters to be able to purchase kits from our
shoppe. In the coming months fabric will be added to the offerings for on-line sales as well. Be sure to check our
web site in the coming weeks! Kits offered for sale will be appearing soon!
The Sheboygan County Quilters Guild Annual Quilt Show is coming up in September and we will be present
at the show with our first vendor’s booth! Preparations are already being made at the shoppe so that we have
plenty to offer to you at the show, and new samples and kits are being created that are sure to win your heart for
the upcoming fall and holiday seasons! Be sure to look for us there amidst all the beautiful quilts created by the
Guild members.
And our first Shop Hop is coming up October 1 through October 4! We are so excited! We have joined
the Southeast Wisconsin Shop Hop. There are seven shops participating this year. On Thursday, October 1, we
will be sponsoring a bus leaving from our shoppe that will visit all 7 shops! Bus riders will get special discount coupons for each shop, a free pattern for a small project from each shop, and are eligible for drawings to win one of
14 gift baskets valued at $100 each. Lunch will be included on the bus trip. If you can’t make the Thursday bus,
you can sign up to take the bus from Plymouth on Saturday, October 3. We are all very excited to be participating in the shop hop and look forward to being able to show off new and exciting samples and fabric offerings for
all our new quilting friends! Check further in the newsletter for more information.
We continue to add new and exciting fabrics to our selections for you. Haunted Hallow fabrics and panel
print from Red Rooster arrived this week, along with more batiks, more 108” wide backs and some wonderful toneon-tone prints that we have added to our color wall in beige, rust, green and red! We have also expanded the
thread selection for the long arm quilting work, and will be offering large thread cones for sale in basic neutral
colors. And if you love to quilt AND love games, we have just the thing for you — QUILTOPOLY!!
A quick reminder for our quilters who are doing the monthly 2009 Thangles quilt. If you have not already
picked up your finishing kit, please plan to pick up that finishing kit before the end of August. We are starting
preparation for our next Thangles project and want to be certain everyone who ordered a finishing kit for this
year’s project picks up their kit before the process starts again for the new quilt.

Do you have a quilt that needs finishing but you just don’t want to tackle quilting it on your home machine? If learning to quilt
on the longarm is not for you, we can provide quilting services to help you finish those quilt tops that you have pieced, but just
can’t seem to find the time to get quilted. We can provide the finishing quilting service for you—from pressing to binding and
everything in between. Contact us to determine how we can help you finish those quilt tops so that you can display your handiwork and share your accomplishments with family and friends!

you know someone who needs a quilt made but they don’t quilt themselves, or someone who just needs help getting some quilting projects completed, we can help. Stop at the shoppe with the details for the project, and we can provide a quote for completing the project for you. We want to help quilters—and non-quilters—in every way we can.
Long Arm Quilting Classes and Machine Rental

onto the machine, start and stop stitching, basting, and 10-12 basic stitches that can be used when quilting your quilt, including
meander, leaves, and several other design variations. Materials for the class are included and your sample sewing is yours to
keep. Class time will be 2-1/2 to 3 hours depending on the individual, with approximately 1-1/2 hours of individual one-on-one
training, and the remainder of the class time for you to practice the techniques and stitches you have learned. Additional
practice materials can be purchased if you wish to rent machine time to continue practicing before working on your quilt.
Current class fee is $60.00 including materials. Call to schedule a time—day, evening and Saturday times are available. Deposit of $30.00 required when signing up.

Block 7 profiles Isabella Baumfree, also known as Sojourner Truth. Born a slave in 1797 and one of 13 children, Isabella was sold, along with a herd of sheep, to a new master at age 9 for $100.
By the age of 18, Isabella had been sold twice more ending up with John Dumont. New York legislated the abolition of
slavery effective in 1827. Dumont had promised Isabella that he would free her in 1826 if she did a good job at her work.
However, he ended up refusing to free her claiming that she had not been productive enough. Isabella was furious because
she believed a person should keep their word. She worked through the night spinning wool to account for any payment due for
her freedom and then escaped with her infant daughter, Sophia.
The Van Wagenen family took Isabella in and helped her regain custody of her 5-year-old son who had been traded
away. While living with the Van Wegenen’s she had an intense religious experience and began preaching. In 1843 she changed
her name to Sojourner Truth and began working as a traveling preacher.
During her travels, she met William Lloyd Garrison who published her memoirs The Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A
Northern Slave. The memoir increased her visibility and she began making appearances at events through Ohio where she discussed slavery and women’s rights.
In 1854, Sojourner appeared at the Ohio Woman’s Rights Convention and gave her most famous speech, Ain’t I a
Woman? The speech inspired both anti-slavery and women’s rights advocates.
After the Civil War, Sojourner expanded her work to include property rights for freed slaves. For years, she lobbied
Congress to give former slaves free land in the West. Her efforts were largely ignored. She continued traveling and speaking,
primarily at churches until her death in 1883.
