Poway’s nickname, ‘The City in the Country,’ fits it like a saddle
on a horse. It’s the wild, wild west tamed and well-cared for,
just a 20 minute drive from San Diego International Airport
and 15 minutes from the beach. Poway offers the opportunity
to explore history, open space and much more.

Poway loves to celebrate its past and a visit to Old Poway Park
takes you back to the early 1900s. The Heritage Museum houses
artifacts and antiques, a reminder of how different the life of a
pioneer was a century ago. A restored steam engine train circles
the park on weekends, a roaring blast from the past for the public
to ride. Staged Old West gunfights break out on special occasions
to add even more authenticity. The train station, fountain, gazebo
and grassy picnic area make Old Poway Park a treasured
destination for families and a rich backdrop for photographers.
The western theme spills over to a nearby hamburger restaurant
and a ‘town’ of unique shops. The always fresh Farmers Market
rides in every Saturday.

Outdoorsy, adventurous types can come to Poway and never sit
down - with its 57 miles of trails to explore and many one-of-akind destinations to reach... on foot, bike or horseback. Blue Sky
Ecological Reserve is a 700 acre canyon of protected natural
habitat. Hike on your own or join a guided tour to learn about the
area and the critters who live there. Goodan Ranch and Sycamore
Canyon, with 2,200 acres of chaparral covered hills and valleys
offers another get-away for folks looking to linger in Poway’s
history and open space.

Hiking trails also lead to the summits of Mount Woodson and Iron Mountain, invigorating calorieburns that reward with views all the way to the coast. A hike to nearby Potato Chip Rock comes with
special bragging rights, since the giant sliver of rock has been deemed One of Ten Amazing Places
You Must See... in the World! Another trail circles Lake Poway with its stunning wildflowers and
bird’s-eye views of boats on the water. The lake hosts a number of competitive fishing derbies and
allows fishing year round. Trout, bass and catfish topping 10 pounds have landed on more than a few
dinner plates. Or bring a picnic and enjoy the ballfields, volleyball courts, archery range, playground
and grassy hills dotted with tables and shade trees.
For golfers, multiple award-winning golf courses are just a chip shot away. Poway is home to
Stoneridge Country Club and Maderas Golf Club, one of Golf Digest’s Top 100 Public Golf Courses in
the nation! Poway is a playground for bicyclists too, hosting the annual Tour de Poway bike race.
And thousands of runners lace-up their tennies for the annual Cinco de Mayo Trail Run.

Of course horses are an ever-present part of the scenery. Poway hosts year round equestrian
events and Poway Rodeo, a PRCA sanctioned event, brings professional cowboys to the city annually.
The Tournament of the Phoenix showcases the Renaissance era with knights in full armor jousting
atop impressive mounts. In fact, horses are so common in Poway that special crosswalk boxes at
some intersections are high enough for riders to push.

In Poway the fun doesn’t end when the sun goes down. The Poway Center for Performing Arts
features top-notch talent from the worlds of drama, dance, music and comedy. And to make your
evening complete, local restaurants serve up a wide variety of dining options and dishes,
everything from shepherd’s pie to sushi.
Poway basks in Southern California sunshine with an average temp in the 70s. T-shirt and shorts
weather even in the winter. The ‘City in the Country’ is truly an old-fashioned, outdoor-loving
community of 50,000 best enjoyed at the leisurely pace of a walk, not a gallop.
