Caring for patients is our #1 priority
E
nsuring that our patients have a positive experience during their
hospital stay is a priority for Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital
(OSMH). Every day our staff, physicians and volunteers are working to improve the quality and safety of the care that is provided to patients during their hospital stay.
This is evidenced in our renewed strategic plan, which has put greater
emphasis on quality and safety, and through our second annual Quality
Improvement Plan or QIP.
“Our strategic plan has become the vision of where we want to be as an
organization and our QIP is a key piece of the annual plan that supports
it,” explains Sean Bisschop, Quality Improvement Coordinator.
“It keeps our eyes, resources and efforts focused on producing high quality, safe and efficient care: what’s most important to our community.”
After setting aggressive targets for the last QIP, this year the hospital
scaled back on the number of quality improvement change ideas and
aligned them with performance measures for each of the strategic
themes in the hospital’s strategic plan.
A quality and safety improvement initiative that was introduced in last
year’s QIP, and appears again this year, is focused on preventing falls
while maintaining patient independence, aligning with the hospital’s
goal of focusing on quality and safety. The primary goal of this initiative is keeping patients safe by reducing the risk of falls and falls-related
injuries while in the hospital.
“Most often falls occur when a patient tries to get in and out of bed
themselves,” says Ryan Miller, RN, Program Manager of the Integrated
RN Rose Attenborough (left) and PSW Elva Lindsay use a mechanical

Message from the Executive
“Being a nurse myself makes it a very humbling experience to be on the patient side
of things … Thanks for a wonderful team of care-givers in this difficult time of trying
to make ends meet.”
Grateful Patient Letter
They are simple words of thanks from grateful patients, but they serve as a constant
reminder of the important role that OSMH plays within the community. It further
emphasizes how vital the Foundation is to the hospital’s success and longevity.
One of the most important roles for the hospital is ensuring that our community
continues to receive excellent, safe, high quality care. In our cover story Caring
for patients is our #1 priority, we take a brief look at one of the ways that OSMH is
working to ensure that patients have a positive experience when they come for care.
The 2012-13 Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) allows the hospital to focus on specific
activities and initiatives that are truly going to change the type of care our patients
receive – especially our senior’s population.
This fall, we request your support to purchase mechanical patient lift technology and
for the ongoing investment in our specialized patient services, including Complex
Continuing Care and Geriatrics, Maternal, Child, Youth and Mental Health, Chronic
Disease Management and Prevention, and Surgical Services
Also in this month’s issue is an interview with Chuck (see page 3) about his new role as
Chair of the OSMHF Board of Directors.

Chuck Burton
Chair, OSMH Foundation
Chuck Burton elected Chair of Board
W
hat started many years ago as a corporate sponsorship
for the Burton Team of Investment Planning Counsel has
turned into a long-standing relationship.
“As an organization, we were first involved with the hospital gala as
a corporate sponsor,” says Chuck Burton, Branch Manager of The
Burton Team. “I started volunteering with the
Foundation as a member of the gala committee
in 2006 and have been part of that event ever
since.”
In 2008, Chuck brought his expertise to the
OSMH Foundation Board of Directors. This
past June, during the annual general meeting he
was elected Chair.
“I am thrilled to be able to represent the
community in this way,” he says. “The hospital
supports everyone within the community. At
the end of the day it doesn’t matter who you are
or what your status is, the hospital is there to
support you.”
“Our family has had to utilize the services of the hospital and that’s
why I have chosen, both as an organization and an individual, to
support the hospital, to help make it better. It’s a benefit for the
growth and the health of our city.”
Having a highly regarded and respected hospital within the
community is something Chuck is also proud to be associated
with.
“For a community hospital, OSMH has achieved so many
milestones, it is impressive and I am attracted to that type of
organization,” he explains.
That is why during his time as chair Chuck’s goal is to continue to
increase awareness of the importance of the hospital within the
community.
“Because of the important role that the hospital
plays within the community it is essential that
as a Board we continue to help people recognize
and understand the importance of having the
scope and breadth of health services that we do
within our community,” he says.
“There is a lot of competition within our
community right now for donor dollars and
volunteer support, but the choice in supporting
our hospital is the choice between having a high
caliber facility there to treat us when we are
sick, versus not having health services within
our community.”
Outside of his volunteer activities with the Foundation, Chuck
is the Branch Manager and Financial Planner with The Burton
Team of Investment Planning Counsel in Orillia. Involved in the
community, Chuck is also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Orillia,
a group that works to improve the physical, emotional and social
lives of young people in local and global communities.
Chuck, his wife Marlessa and their two children call Orillia home.
Committed to quality and the patient experience
continued from PAGE 1
the washroom or to a wheelchair and now they are immobile. That
is not an experience we want our patients to have when they are at
OSMH.”
The hospital has started to make headway in this area, first through
the implementation of a regional falls program that works both in
the community and in the hospital to help educate and train staff,
patients and families on how to reduce the incidence of falls within
the home and hospital, and earlier this year through the purchase of
new hospital beds (read an update on page 5).
Now the hospital is going one step further and turning to a growing
best practice: the utilization of patient lifts.
“Scientific research over the past few years has been showing us
that patient lifts contribute to better patient outcomes” says Susan
Gibb, RN, BScN, Patient Safety and Risk Management Coordinator
at OSMH.
“Many of the patients we see are of a high acuity, medically complex
and range from the very fragile to the morbidly obese. The jostling,
tugging and awkward manual transfer process is not the most comfortable and has lead to patient and staff injury”
Not an outcome that the hospital is looking for.
“Our patients want independence – it helps them heal faster both
physically and mentally,” says Miller. “By giving our staff the necessary tools and technologies that help make patients mobile more
frequently and easily it will create a better experience, quality of care
and ultimately help patients heal faster.”

NEW & NOTABLE
Future nurse selected as Scholarship recipient
Sarah Gourley (middle), 18, is the recipient of the 2012 Reid Family
Scholarship from the OSMH Foundation. Sarah, a graduate of Park
Street Collegiate Institute, is currently attending Canadore College
in North Bay, pursuing a career in nursing.
As the scholarship recipient, Sarah will receive $2,500 a year
renewable for the next four years. Extending their congratulations
are Kimberley Franklin, RN, (left) and Cheryl Harrison, Vice
President – Patient Services, Regional Programs and Chief Nursing
Executive.
The Reid Family Scholarship is provided through the generosity of
the late Mr. and Mrs. William Reid of Oro-Station. Over the years,
the Reid Family Scholarship has assisted students from Orillia
and area who have had a desire to continue onto a postsecondary
education, but do not have the financial structure to do so.
In perfect bloom
When Gary Carlson retired in 1995 he had no idea what he was
going to do with his time. A chance encounter with a lily farm in
New York sparked his love of lilies and his favourite pastime.
Today, Carlson has over 1,200 varieties of lilies planted in the garden
at his home in Orillia. Thirteen of them registered hybridized lilies
he has created himself. The one we are most proud of is the Soldiers’
Lily.
“One day this beautiful purple day lily with a green throat bloomed
in the garden,” explains Gary. “I saw the purple and thought
immediately of the Purple Heart, the soldiers and war heroes. I
named it for the hospital and for those that had loved ones in the
war.”
The Soldiers’ Lily now graces the cover of our In Memoriam cards
and materials.

Better Quality of Care
It’s the one thing that every hospital patient experiences (a bed!) and thanks to the
generous support of our donors and community, we have been able to update them!
In June, shipments of new medical and surgical beds began arriving at OSMH – ready to
replace their obsolete counterparts. This $550,000 capital investment will help support
OSMH’s continued focus on quality and safety and contribute to our patients’ care.
Inappropriate beds not only contribute to discomfort and poor sleep, they can lead
to patient falls and skin breakdown (two of OSMH’s priority items in the Quality
Improvement Plan). These new beds are not only functional, they are adjustable,
making it easier to get in and out of. Another feature that will assist in patient safety
and satisfaction is the bed surface itself that uses not only works to accommodate the
patients weight and position, but helps to reduce friction, moisture and heat, keeping
patients dry and comfortable.
