Welcome
to the BTU in Cottbus
Unabhängig davon, ob sie im austausch für ein oder zwei semester oder
für ein Vollzeitstudium an die BTU kommen, liegen nun endlich die Hürden des
Zulassungsverfahrens hinter Ihnen und
neue spannende und interessante Herausforderungen vor Ihnen.

Wir möchten Ihnen zu Ihrer Zulassung
gratulieren. Die Brandenburgische Technische Universität (BTU), 1991 gegründet, ist eine junge, innovative und international ausgerichtete Hochschule.
mit ca. 6.400 studierenden hat sie einen überschaubaren Campus und eine
familiäre atmosphäre. Etwa 16 % der
studierenden an der BTU kommen aus
dem ausland. Rund 90 Länder sind hier
vertreten.

university. With about 6,400 students
BTU is a medium-sized university with
a relaxed campus atmosphere. about

Dies ist sicherlich eine der ersten Fragen, die ihr euch vor eurer Bewerbung in
Deutschland gestellt habt. Cottbus liegt
im Nordosten Deutschlands, zwischen
der Bundeshauptstadt Berlin (100 km)
und Dresden (120 km). mit ca. 100 000
Einwohnern ist Cottbus, nach der Landeshauptstadt potsdam, die zweitgrößte
stadt des Bundeslandes Brandenburg.
Bis zur polnischen Grenze sind es nur
noch ca. 30 Kilometer.

Cottbus is situated in northeast Germany between the capital Berlin (100 km)

City and region
Cottbus ist ein günstiger ausgangspunkt für ausflüge in die landschaftlich
schöne Region der Niederlausitz. Diese
wird durch den spreewald mit seinen
kleinen Kanälen und Wasserläufen einige Kilometer nördlich der stadt und
durch ein kleines slawisches Volk, den
sorben bzw. Wenden, mit einer eigenen,
dem polnischen ähnlichen „sorbisch“
genannten sprache, geprägt. so findet
man heute viele straßennamen und
Informationstafeln zweisprachig in sorbisch und Deutsch in Cottbus und Umgebung. außerdem bereichern die sorben bzw. Wenden mit ihren Festen und
Bräuchen das Leben der stadt.
Cottbus is a favorite starting point for
trips into a beautiful area known as the
Niederlausitz. This is where the sorbian
people, a minority slavonic group, live
among the small waterways and canals
only a few kilometers north of the city.
If you are familiar with the polish language you will find similarities with the
sorbian language as well. You will see
street signs and information written in
both German and sorbian in Cottbus.

Cottbus wurde 1156 erstmals urkundlich
erwähnt und erlangte im mittelalter erste Bedeutung als Handelsknotenpunkt.
Neben Teilen der ehemaligen stadtmauer aus dem 14. Jahrhundert zeugen die
prächtigen Bürgerhäuser am altmarkt
von vergangenem Glanz. Darüber hinaus wird das Gesicht der Innenstadt
vor allem durch die aus der Gründerzeit stammenden Gebäude geprägt.
Nachdem die stadt im 15. Jahrhundert
durch die Tuchmacher- und Leineweberzünfte schon an Bedeutung gewonnen
hatte, begann sie Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts (Gründerzeit) mit dem abbau von
Braunkohle stark zu wachsen.
Heute ist Cottbus eine Großstadt, die
sich als Zentrum wissenschaftlicher,
sportlicher und kultureller aktivitäten
einen Namen gemacht hat. mehr Informationen über die Geschichte der stadt
sowie der Umgebung bietet das über
100 Jahre alte Cottbuser stadtmuseum
in der Bahnhofstraße und das Wendische museum in der mühlenstraße.
Zu den architektonischen sehenswürdigkeiten gehören die Kirchen innerhalb
der alten stadtgrenzen - die Oberkirche
st. Nikolai, die schloßkirche und die
Klosterkirche. Reste der mittelalterlichen
stadtmauer mit Türmen und Toren sowie ein park - Gürtel an stelle des ehemaligen stadtgrabens umschließen den
alten stadtkern und machen den Übergang zu dem moderneren Teil der stadt

The city of Cottbus was first mentioned
in documentation in 1156 and gained
significance in the middle ages as a
trading center. The remains of the medieval city walls, and the magnificent facades in the old market area give a certain character to the inner city. The city
earned its place in history in the 15th
century as a cloth-weaving center and
later at the end of the 19th century as a
coal mining boomtown.
Today Cottbus has made a name for itself as a center of scientific, sports and
cultural activities. The more than 100year-old Cottbus City museum (stadtmuseum) on Bahnhofstraße and the
Wendische museum on mühlenstraße
offer a more detailed description about
the history of the city.

Cottbus is a green city. along the river
spree there are many parks, as well as
tree-lined avenues and promenades. In
the south East of the city you can find
one of the most important German
landscape gardens, Branitz park, which
was created by Herrman Fürst von pückler based on the English landscape gardens of the 19th century.

Germany has a well-developed railway
network. Thus, Cottbus has direct links
to Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig and Wroclaw

Cottbus verfügt über keinen eigenen
Verkehrsflughafen. Falls ihr mit dem
Flugzeug anreist, müsst ihr mit der Bahn
weiter nach Cottbus fahren. Es ist uns
leider nicht möglich, euch von einem
Flughafen abzuholen.
Cottbus does not have a public airport.
If you are traveling by plane, you will
have to transfer to the railway network.
Unfortunately, we are unable to pick you
up from an airport.
Der deutsche Flughafen mit den meisten
internationalen Verbindungen ist Frankfurt/main (FRa). Die nächsten internationalen Flughäfen sind die Berliner
Flughäfen Tegel (TXL) und schönefeld
(sXF).
> Wenn ihr in Berlin landet, gelangt ihr:
Vom Flughafen Tegel mit den Bussen
109, X9 zum Bahnhof „Zoologischer
Garten” oder mit dem Bus TXL zum
Hauptbahnhof.

Ein Ticket für den Bus oder die s-Bahn
ist am automaten erhältlich und muss
vor dem Einsteigen gekauft werden.

Züge der Linie RE 2 nach Cottbus. abfahrten einmal stündlich zwischen 6 und
22 Uhr. Die Fahrzeit beträgt ca. 1 stunde
und vierzig minuten.
The main airport in Germany is Frankfurt/main (FRa). The closest international airports to Cottbus are in Berlin: Tegel (TXL) and schönefeld (sXF).

From Berlin Tegel take bus number
“109” or “X9” to the train station “Zoologischer Garten” or take bus “TXL“ to
the main train station “Hauptbahnhof“.
From Berlin Schönefeld take the s-Bahn
train “s9” to the train station “BerlinOstbahnhof”.
You have to buy a ticket for the bus or
s-Bahn train at the ticket machine before
you get on. Remember to change a little
money before your departure.
From these stations the train RE 2 goes
to Cottbus. It departs hourly between 6
a.m. and 10 p.m. with an approximate
travel time of 1 hour 40 min. to Cottbus.

Vom Flughafen fährt eine s-Bahn zwischen 6 Uhr und 0 Uhr alle 10 minuten
direkt zum Frankfurter Hauptbahnhof.
Von dort gibt es alle 2 stunden zwischen
5 und 17 Uhr eine Zugverbindung nach
Leipzig mit anschlusszug nach Cottbus.
Die Zugfahrt dauert ca. 6 stunden.
Direct s-Bahn trains run between Frankfurt/ main airport and Frankfurt/main
train station every 10 minutes between
6 a.m. and midnight. at the Frankfurt/
main train station, there is a connection
to Leipzig every 2 hours between 5 a.m.
and 5 p.m. In Leipzig you must change
to the train for Cottbus. Travel time from
Frankfurt/main to Cottbus via Leipzig is
approximately 6 hours.
Vom Bahnhof aus erreicht ihr die Universität mit dem Bus Nr. 16. (straßenbahnhaltestelle vor dem Hauptbahnhof,
bis zur Haltestelle „TU-mensa“). Zu Fuß
benötigt ihr ungefähr 25-30 minuten.

From the Cottbus train station you can
get to the university by bus, by taxi or
on foot. Take bus No. 16 from the tram
platform in front of the station to the
stop: “TU mensa” or you can just take a
taxi from the train station. If you want to
walk, you will need approximately 25–30
minutes and there are signs for the university along the way.

Die BTU liegt nordwestlich der Cottbuser
Innenstadt. Bis zum historischen stadtkern geht man zu Fuß etwa 5 minuten.
BTU is situated northwest of downtown
Cottbus. From the campus it takes about
5 minutes to walk to the historic center.
Die BTU ist eine junge Universität, die
1991 als einzige Technische Universität
des Landes Brandenburg gegründet
wurde. Transdisziplinäre Forschung und
fakultätsübergreifende
Zusammenarbeit auch in der Lehre kennzeichnen
das profil der Hochschule. Das fächerübergreifende studium vermittelt den
studierenden der Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften auch geistes- und sozialwissenschaftliche Kenntnisse über die
Bezüge von Technik und Gesellschaft.
BTU was founded in 1991 as the only
University of Technology in the state of
Brandenburg. Transdisciplinary research
and teaching are a distinguishing feature of the university. This interdisciplinary approach guarantees a versatile
education and gives students of engineering and natural sciences additional
valuable background knowledge in human and social sciences, as well as an
idea of how technology and the humanities interact and relate to each other.

Die moderne Campus-Universität verfügt über ein ausgezeichnetes Betreuungsverhältnis von professoren zu studierenden und kann kurze studienzeiten
gewährleisten. Frühzeitig werden studierende in den Wissenschaftsbetrieb eingebunden. Lehrstühle, Labore, pC-pools
und zentrale Einrichtungen verfügen
über eine hervorragende ausstattung. so
kann z.B. jeder architektur- bzw. stadtplanungsstudierende kostenlos einen eigenen atelierarbeitsplatz nutzen.
Die Universität bildet das innovative
Zentrum der Region. Der Technologietransfer, die wissenschaftliche Kompetenz und die entstandene Infrastruktur
stellen ein wichtiges argument für notwendige Industrieansiedelungen dar.
Die Technologietransferstelle der BTU
agiert dabei als schnittstelle zwischen

Östlich der Karl-marx-str. gegenüber
dem Hauptgebäude (HG) befindet sich
die Universitätsbibliothek, die als Informations-, Kommunikations- und multimediazentrum, kurz IKmZ, eines der
architektonischen Highlights der BTU
darstellt. sie wurde von den schweizer
architekten Herzog & de meuron entworfen und 2006 mit dem preis „Bibliothek des Jahres“ ausgezeichnet.
To the east of the Karl-marx-straße, opposite the main building, you will find
the new library designed in a very innovative style by swiss architects Herzog
and de meuron. It is called the “Information, Communication and multimedia
Center” (IKmZ). In 2006 the IKmZ was
awarded “library of the year”.
Der Bibliotheksbestand umfasst zurzeit

Die Idee des TaNDEm-projektes ist es,
dass studenten sich gegenseitig ihre
muttersprachen beibringen und so nicht
nur die jeweilige sprache erlernen oder
ihre Kenntnisse verbessern, sondern
auch die Chance haben die Kultur des
anderen ein wenig näher kennen zu lernen.
Im sTURa gibt es dazu das anmeldeformular. Dieses füllt ihr aus und die studenten vom Referat Internationales versuchen einen studenten zu finden, der
eure muttersprache erlernen will und
euch in Deutsch oder einer anderen gewünschten sprache helfen kann. Dann
bekommt ihr eine Nachricht per E-mail

TANDEM
The TaNDEm-project was initiated to

abilities by teaching each other their native languages. most importantly, this
project forms a basis to get to know
more about the culture behind the languages.
You will find the application form for a
TaNDEm partnership in the student
Council Office. Complete all necessary
information on this form and the representative for international affairs will
try to find a student who wants to learn
your mother tongue and in return teach
you German or another desired language. You will receive a message via
e-mail with the contact address of your
TaNDEm partner. It is your turn then to
arrange a meeting.
The best is to meet in nice surroundings,
having a cup of coffee or a glass of beer
as this makes it easier to get to know
each other and to learn or improve your
foreign language skills.

Ein studium im ausland hat meist andere Kostenfaktoren als im Heimatland.
Wir möchten euch hiermit einen kleinen
Überblick darüber geben, was ihr an Kosten für euren auslandsaufenthalt einplanen müsst.

Wir freuen uns, euch mitteilen zu können, dass es an der BTU keine studiengebühren gibt. momentan ist nur ein
semesterbeitrag in Höhe von 217,45 €
inklusive semesterticket zu leisten. Für
Unterkunft und sonstige Lebenshaltungskosten werden ungefähr 500-700 €
pro monat benötigt.

Ärzte
solltest du einmal krank werden – gibt
es in Cottbus viele Ärzte. mit deiner gesetzlichen Krankenversicherung kannst
du kostenlos zu jedem allgemeinmediziner deiner Wahl gehen (zzgl. pro Quartal eine einmalige praxisgebühr von
10 EUR). Für bestimmte spezialisten
braucht ihr eine Überweisung vom
Hausarzt. Eure Krankenversicherung
übernimmt auch den größten Teil der
Rezeptkosten für medikamente. auch
in Campusnähe gibt es Ärzte für die
verschiedensten Fachgebiete. Weitere
Ärzte findet ihr in der ganzen stadt. In
der Regel haben Ärzte jeden Vormittag
von montag bis Freitag zwischen 8 und
12 Uhr sprechzeit. Nachmittags sind
die Öffnungszeiten von praxis zu praxis
verschieden. außerhalb der sprechstunden (in Notfällen) oder am Wochenende
könnt ihr in die Notfallambulanz des
Carl-Thiem-Klinikums in der Thiemstraße gehen.
Bei absoluten Notfällen könnt ihr die
Rettungsambulanz unter der Telefonnummer 112 anrufen.
Doctors
should you get sick, don´t worry – there
are many doctors in Cottbus. With your
public health insurance you can go to
any general practitioner you choose.
Generally, consultations with doctors
are free of charge. However there is a 10
euro fee, good for three months, if you
go to the doctor for medical attention.
For certain specialists you need a referral from the general practitioner. Your
health insurance also pays for most of
the prescription costs for medication.
also, next to the campus there are doctors specialized in all areas. Of course,
there are more doctors to choose from in
town. The International Office has a list
with English-speaking doctors if needed.
Generally physicians see patients
mondays through Fridays between 8
a.m. - 12 p.m. In the afternoons the office
hours differ from doctor to doctor.
Outside the office hours (in emergency
cases) or on the weekends you can go to
the emergency room of the Carl-ThiemHospital on Thiemstraße.
In life-threatening emergency cases you
can call the ambulance at 112.
