Blast from the Past: ...Celebrating St. Malo`s 120th Birthday in 2012
June, 2012 Vol. 209 Blast from the Past: ...Celebrating St. Malo’s 120th Birthday in 2012 Camping in St. Malo! Campers & cottagers have been coming to St. Malo for summertime fun for more than 50 years. In 1957, a dam was created on the Rat River creating St. Malo Lake. Malo. It took the passage of time and a great deal of pressure from the St. Malo Chamber of Commerce, but in 1958, the provincial government purchased 10 acres of land around the lake. The first tiny beach and parking lot were created and that was the beginning of the St. Malo “summer tourist” industry consisting of campers and cottagers from near & far. The St. Malo Provincial Park was officially opened July 15, 1961 with Father David Roy performing the blessing of the beach. The park prospered, grew and expanded over the years. Many park employees (then and now) who have worked or currently work at the Park were/are local residents. The community of St. Malo benefited a great deal from the development of this provincial park. During the growth and expansion of the park, other “camping” businesses developed in the area; Gosselin Camping and Debonair Campground. Camping on Ovila Gosselin’s family farm started in the early 1960’s. Camping sites could be rented for the season or for short periods of time. In the 1980’s electricity was brought to the campsites, private & public beaches were developed with a diving board & play area for children. There was canoeing, boating & even water skiing on the lake during this time. Campers loved the beauty & peacefulness of the St. Malo recreational area. A cooperative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democraticallycontrolled enterprise. Co-ops take different forms and operate in all sectors of the economy. They can be either non-profit or for-profit enterprises, but cooperatives always serve both economic and social purposes. While a co-op exists to meet the common needs of its members, it also promotes the development of those members through their involvement in the democratic governance of the enterprise. At the same time, the co-operative is usually undertaking local social development or economic development activities, such as creating jobs or providing goods and services that would otherwise be unavailable to the community. In Canada, approximately 8,800 co-operatives offer products and services to 17 million members. 350 of these cooperatives are located in Manitoba and Manitobans hold over 800,000 co-op memberships. In Manitoba, there are three main types of cooperatives: A consumer co-op provides products or services to its members (such as a retail co-op, housing, health-care or child-care co-op). A producer co-op processes and markets the goods or services produced by its members, and/ or supplies products or services necessary to the members’ professional activities (such as independent entrepreneurs, artisans, or farmers). A worker co-op provides employment for its members. In this type of co-op, the employees are the members and the owners of the enterprise. The Seven Cooperative Principles 1. Voluntary and open membership 2. Democratic member control 3. Member economic participation 4. Autonomy and independence 5. Education, training and information 6. Co-operation among cooperatives 7. Concern for community The Cooperative Advantage Co-operatives make people, not profit, their top priority. Because co-operatives are owned and democratically-controlled by their members (individuals or groups) the decisions taken by co-operatives balance the need for profitability with the needs of their members and the wider interests of the community. While meeting a broad range of needs, co-ops help develop community leadership. They also help to build social capital by creating productive networks that broaden the base of support and resources available to their members. Co-ops build local assets and keep wealth in the community by returning dividends to members. Finally, co-ops are rarely susceptible to pull-out or take-over since they are guided by the interests of local stakeholders, not outside investors. *Adapted from the International Cooperative Association and the Government of Canada’s Co-operatives Secretariat. Our 12 year old son Loel has been on the ice since the age of two. He used to "stick handle"peas with his spoon on his highchair tray. When he was four, he joined minor hockey because we could hold him back no longer, but despite his years of experience in A1 & AAA hockey, Joel & his volunteer coaches have taught him so many more skills and improved his existing talent immensely. Loel just joined ESMS & the HockeyAcademy this year & has made many new friends. He is actually excited about going to school, & we are very pleased with the small class sizes & individualized attention that Loel has received. The incentive of ice time has helped him to maintain a high grade average & he has developed a greater discipline & sense of responsibility towards his education. The opportunity for Loel to continue in his French Immersion curriculum is a definite positive for us and we appreciate the concept that ESMS is not a Hockey School but rather a School that has a Hockey Program. Loel is already looking forward to Grade 8 at ESMS and has obviously not been affected by the daily commute from Winnipeg to St.Malo. We would highly recommend Joel Fouasse and theSt.Malo Hockey Academy to anyone who is looking for a quality education with the added experience of a great hockey program. —Submitted by Paula Asham Buying, Selling, Leasing? It wasn’t a human life but that does not diminish the value of this tiny life. René and his wife, Jeanne, had their lives forever changed on March 25. After determining that there was no mother bear in the area to take care of this young cub, René took him home and his family became the foster parents of baby MAKOON (Little Bear). In no time at all, with bottle feeding and great care and attention, this tiny bundle of fur was soon waddling around the garage with great curiosity bringing smiles and laughter to many. St. Malo residents had once again become enamoured with a local “resident.” This one did not play hockey or lead a dog sled team but this furry little bundle of joy put smiles, laughter and joy into the hearts of young and old alike. He was simply irresistible, our once in a lifetime event. Makoon’s stay in St. Malo was very brief. On April 2, Conservation officers came and took him away to the Assiniboine Park Zoo to be cared for while a decision is made by government officials on the long term plans for his future. The hope of all of us in this community is that Makoon will be rehabilitated to the wild somewhere in Manitoba. It has been a few months now since Makoon was rescued and very little is known about his journey since leaving St. Malo, even though many have asked. There are those that say humans should not interfere with the ways of the animal kingdom, but there are many who believe things happen for a reason. We all hope someday to know what became of Makoon. But, in the meantime, let’s treasure the wonderful memories we have of René with his baby bear Makoon. —Submitted by Lorraine Jones-Racine Bibliothèque Régionale Jolys Regional Library Succursale St-Malo Branch Vanessa Christiuk: Summer Reading Program Programme de lecture d’été Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association Tri-Star Rural Athlete of the Week Congratulations to Vanessa Christiuk of Dufrost who was named the MHSAA Tri-Star Rural Athlete of the Week May 22. The Green Gold program has again been underway since mid May. Its primary purpose is to collect alfalfa clippings to determine when the optimal time is to take the first cut to reach dairy quality hay. Clippings are taken and analysed by the wet chemistry method twice weekly until desired Relative Feed Value (RFV) has been reached. Ideal RFV target for dairy quality hay is between 120 and 150 at the early bud stage of alfalfa. For dry cow and beef quality hay, aim for RFV of 100 to 120. With a mild winter and favourable spring that we’ve had, hay day 2012 will be one of the earliest in recent memory. Debonair Campground In 1985 J.P. and Agnes Gosselin took the 55 acres of land they purchased from J.P.’s father, Maurice, and set off with a dream and a few dollars. It wasn’t easy, the days from late April to mid-October were long, tough and stressful but year by year, Debonair Campground evolved from an “overflow” to the St. Malo Provincial Park to the preferred seasonal campground for many families. Debonair Campground started on the north side of HWY 403 and grew from 20 basic campsites to more than 200 campsites today. Each year improvements to the campground and sites were made. Demand increased over the years and soon Debonair opened up Moe’s Place on the south side of Hwy 403. Today the amenities include full and partially serviced sites, hot tub, spring fed beach/pond with slide & fountain, play structures, volleyball court, showers, laundromat, on-site winter storage & renewable seasonal leases. Debonair Campground is another great example of a local business that started small but with years of hard work & determination grew to the successful operation it is today. Check us out online! Close to 500 million people world-wide have access to the World Wide Web. No matter what your business is, you can't ignore 500 million people. Even if you just conduct business within your community, you want to let locals know that you are interested in serving them in any way possible. If you don't, your competitors will !!! If you are a St. Malo & District Chamber of Commerce Member, your business/farm/organization is promoted on the Chamber website www.jadorestmalo.ca . It is one of many benefits included in your membership fee. Each member has its own page. They can display a variety of things about their business, like a map of their location, various pictures, description, news, specials, events, contact information, website (if any), etc. It can act as a 24 hour, 7 days a week open shop. 2012 Honourees are, from top left: Natasha Bouchard, Anita Preteau, Robert Catellier, Christina Lambert, Hèlene Hébert, Pierre Maynard, Bernice Preteau, Louis Gosselin, Dave Collette & Aline Pilotte.
