Worship is at the
very heart of the
church’s life. All that
the church is and does
is rooted in its worship. Worship is the
principal influence
that shapes our faith,
and is the most visible
way we express our
faith.
In worship, through
Word and Sacrament,
the church is sustained by the presence of Christ. Joined
in worship to the One
who is the source of
its life, the church is
empowered to serve
God in the world.
… In an age dominated by individualism and secularism, it
is particularly important to embrace
forms of worship that
are firmly rooted in
faith and foster a
strong communal
sense of being united
with God … from
Preface to Book of
Common Worship
Call to Worship
The people are called
to worship God.
Words from scripture
are spoken or sung to
proclaim who God is
and what God has
done. We are thus reminded that our worship centers in God
and not in ourselves.
―Our help is in the
name of the Lord, who
made heaven and
earth.‖ --Ps. 124:8
(BCW p. 35)
Prayer of Confession
and
Assurance of Pardon
In words of scripture
the people are called
to confess the reality
of sin in personal and
common life. Claiming the promises of
God sealed in our
baptism, we humbly
confess our sin. … A
period of silence may
be observed before,
within, or following
the confession of sin.
Having confessed our
sin, we remember the
promises of God’s redemption, and the
claims God has on all
human life. The assurance of God’s forgiving grace is declared in the name of
Jesus Christ. (BCW p.
35)
Affirmation of Faith
The people respond
to the proclamation
of the Word by affirming the faith. The
faith of the church
both shapes our lives
and expresses the
hope and expectancy
that are a part of the
Christian life. From
early in the church’s
life, an affirmation of
faith has been central
in corporate worship.
… The Nicene Creed
is traditionally said
whenever the Lord’s
Supper is celebrated.
(BCW p. 38)
Gloria Patri
With gladness God is
praised in song, for
the gift of God’s
grace brings joy. The
Gloria Patri acknowledges the Triune
God, Father, Son and
Holy Spirit.

Why We Do What We Do In Worship (continued)
Prayers of the People
Intercession: The congregation
prays for worldwide and local
concerns. These include the
church universal, the world,
the nation, state, local communities.
Supplications: The congregation prays for its own life and
ministry. This includes the local church, those who struggle
with their faith, those in transition, those who are sick, grieving, lonely, anxious, and all
members. (BCW p. 40)
thanksgiving.) We praise God
for all God’s mighty acts in the
past, present, and future. …
The prayer concludes with an
ascription of praise to the Triune God. Following the great
thanksgiving, the Lord’s Prayer
is said by the people. (BCW p.
42-43)

world events and conditions,
and the church’s mission. Attention should be given to ensure that over a period of time,
worshipers will be provided all
of the many and varied themes
and emphases of the scripture.
…A lectionary provides consistency, and ensures that over
a period of time the full witness
of scripture will be read as part
of worship. A lectionary used
in common with other churches
… expresses a connection with
the universal church. (BCW p.

Sermon
When the Bible has been read,
its message is proclaimed in a
sermon or other form of exposition of God’s Word. The God
who speaks in scripture speaks
to us now. The God who acted
in biblical history acts today.
Through the Holy Spirit, Christ
is present in the sermon, offering grace and calling for obedience.
IT’S BEES’ NIGHT & YOU’RE INVITED!!

The game starts at 6:30 PM this year and we’ve reserved the Brat Garden for Presbyterians and their friends....that means we’ll have a good time and an opportunity to
let others know what a great group of Christians we are!

church services and other events until July 19th and you can also pick them up in the church office. We
will be in the Brat Garden beginning about 6:00. Tickets are for adults, seniors 60 and over, and students

JUNE INVITATIONAL GOLF OUTING
Saturday, June 26 was a great day for golf. No rain, just heat! Ten golfers braved that heat to enjoy a great
day of golfing. Deb Kinney rode in the golf cart with Eva Ann Elmer, and Karen Dewey and Cindy Murphy
took care of prizes in the cool club house. Every one received numerous prizes from the 31 area businesses who donated them. It really was a great day, and everyone should plan to participate next year!

Treasure Chest Needs
Our Treasure Chest is in need of more gifts to be
sent to the cancer unit at the Univ. of Iowa Children’s Hospital for children who are taking painful
treatments, suffering anxiety from the treatments
and being separated from their families. The ability
to choose a gift from the Treasure Chest gives them
something to look forward to. Thank you for all you
have given in the past. Many blessings to all of you.

Snake Alley Art Fair Food Booth...by Cindy Murphy
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in any way at the FPC Snake
Alley Art Fair Food Booth. It was fabulous! While the storms at 4 am worried us,
by 5:30, the skies were clearing and it was a great day. Over 50 church members
and friends helped by providing equipment, cooking hamburger, or working at
the booth. Many more stopped by to purchase tacos, ice cream or soda. While
the location at the foot of Snake Alley was less than ideal, we still had a successful
day. Once all the financial transactions are complete, we will have made a slight profit – not bad for the
first year. We have been assured that next year, our booth will be on top of the Alley somewhere. So
yes, there will be a next year! Please mark your calendars for Sunday, June 19, 2011.
