Last month I took a ride up to
Lynwood, WA to the North
Sound Indian Motorcycle
dealership. There I met
Jim Powers Jr., the General
Manager; a really nice guy
with a great sense of humor. I
was privileged to test drive a
brand new Indian Motorcycle
and have my picture taken on
another one. In case you missed it, see the front
cover. Anyway, here are my thoughts about the
Indian.
Overall appearance is great. They did a terriffic
job with the retro styling. The seat was wide and
comfortible with a similar feel to a custom Corbin
or Mustang seat. The handlebars were comfortably
wide, and the windshield was adjustable up and
down for all kinds of weather.
Controls were all handy, although I am used to left
and right turn signal buttons and the Indian had a
single switch on the left that is typical of metric
cruisers. The shifter was smooth, but did not have
a heel-toe shift lever, although I was told that they
wre available as an option. The big V-Twin motor
was powerful and the torque was substantial. I
liked the low idle speed (800 rpm) and the fact that
it would pull from about 1000 rpm without lugging
the engine.
The amazing thing that I noticed is that the bike felt
much lighter than it is, and handled like a lighter
bike. Sort of like a Sportster. It could be flicked
around without much effort, and still held onto
the pavement like a bagger. Plus, it came with
electronic cruise control, built in stereo system,
and a built in GPS along with many other great
standard features that are options on other bikes.
If you get a chance to go to Lynwood, it is worth
your time to stop in at North Sound Indian and
take a test drive. It is definately worth the trip.
Next month is the main event for ABATE of
Washington; Black Thursday. Everyone should
be planning on attending. Take a couple of days
off and plan on spending them at the Capitol. We
need your presence to have an effective voice and
further our agenda. If you care anything about your
freedom of the road, you should be there. Invite
your friends, too. The more people we have there,
the better it will be. Donnie Landsman should be
providing the plan and updates during the next few
weeks. I hope to see you there.

Hey Everyone,
Hope everything is good and you had a
good summer of riding with seeing old friends and
meeting new. We now have two new chapters to
ride with, there is the Key Peninsula Chapter they
meet at The Floatation Device in Gig Harbor the
3rd Wednesday of the month 7:00 PM and The
Elk Country Chapter in Morton meeting at the
Bucksnort Pub the last Sunday of the month 12:00
noon, please do everything you can to make them
feel welcome and if you live in either of these
areas check them out as we need to grow this
organization. Unfortunately we also lost a chapter
on the east side of the mountains, Independence
Chapter has decided to close up shop. Even though
this is a big loss to ABATE of Washington we hope
that the members of that chapter stay with us by
either joining a surrounding chapter or becoming
an independent.
There is a group of people led by Donnie
Landsman creating an event that every motorcyclist
in the state of Washington should attend if you own
and ride a motorcycle or just believe in protecting
the rights of motorcyclist this event is being created
just for you, this event will be on Jan. 23 2014 in
Olympia and it is called Black Thursday. Now
we have people brain storming on how to entice
as many motorcyclists as possible to attend Black
Thursday, so what I am asking you does ABATE
of Washington have to give you something to get
you to go to Olympia and meet with the people that
have the power to strip you of your rights if you
don’t stand up and fight for them. I would like to
use an analogy that I heard Bandido Lucky Les say
(may not be word for word) “if I come into your
house and when I leave I take something from you
and you don’t say anything then the next time I take
something else you still don’t say anything, I am
going to keep coming back”. What it comes down
to is they have taken rights from us and we have not
showed up in force and they have not really heard
us, don’t get me wrong we have shown up and they
know were here but they do not know how strong
we really are so January 23, 2014 make sure you
are there.
Another group led by Jimmy George is
creating probably our best Spring Opener yet,
Jimmy has secured a 2014 Harley Davidson Road
King with zero miles and a full warranty from a
very generous Destination Harley Davidson. By
the time this issue comes out raffle tickets will be
available so make sure we sell as many as possible.
Also Jimmy has sponsorship applications and it
would be nice if we could get some help getting
sponsors in your area, with your help we can make
this Spring Opener the biggest event in the North
West.

Black Thursday is approaching fast, we have the
Govern Hotel again make sure you stop by. Last year
was exceptional we had the Senators and Legislators
coming in throughout the evening. It was great to see
them stop by and sign our sheet ,plus taking the time
to visit and get to know the members that were in
attendance. Do not miss this opportunity to make your
statement. IF WE DO NOT STEP UP WE WILL BE
STEPPED ON!
I can tell you that this years Spring Opener is going to
go on record as the best ever there has been so much
work already put into this event. You need to rest assure
that the Spring Opener committee is not sitting back
waiting for something to happen.
It is great to hear there are so many events going
on through the winter months, All the Chapters on the
EAST SIDE have plans for the coming months. It is a
great time to be a part of ABATE of WASHINGTON....

• a law that allows conversion kits to be used to add
wheels to motorcycles;
• and a law that will make it mandatory for motorcycles
to be considered in traffic planning (HOV lanes,
parking, etc).
Indeed, we have another bill that is in a great position
to be passed. As motorcyclist, we have all been there.
Stuck at a red-light that is supposed to control the flow
of traffic. Somehow we are held against our will waiting
for a light to turn green that indicates Go! When one of
these lights malfunction, Dr. Seuss said it best, “We did
nothing at all. So all we could do was to Sit! Sit! Sit!
And we did not like it. Not one little bit.”
In more than 15 States, the Legislature has passed laws
that allow for motorcycles to Go! Go! Go! ABATE is
pushing HB1238 and SB5141 so that Washington can be
added to the growing list of States that have legislative
relief when we find ourselves in that situation. The
premise is simple: We come to a complete stop; it is
apparent the sensor did not detect us; we wait until it
is clear; and we proceed. IF we make a mistake and
an accident occurs, we cannot use the fact that the light
did not work as a defense. The language of the bill we
are working to pass is so simple, that even a legislator
can get it!
While it seems a passing vote is imminent, this bill really
needs the help of the motorcycle community to call,
email or better yet, show up on BLACK THURSDAY
and tell your elected representative to make sure this
bill gets voted on. It is only through vigilance that we
will get this bill passed; it is then that we will get to
make the choice to proceed.
As can be seen in recent years legislative results,
ABATE is not only about Repealing the Helmet Law.
We do not advocate that anyone does not use a helmet,
only that you have a choice. When Michigan became
the 31st state to allow Freedom of Choice in regard to
wearing helmets, the opponents claimed that fatality
and injuries would dramatically rise. According to a
report from the Michigan State Police, there has been a
drop of 20% fatalities and 27% incapacitating injuries

laboratory mirrors the results of other States that
have repealed their helmet law. This year, our quest
continues. ABATE is all about the choice. It is that
very ideal that we continue to pursue in the Freedom of
the Road.
For 35 years, ABATE of Washington has been the
consistent voice of Motorcyclists Rights and the Fight
for Freedom of the Road. Every January, ABATE
hosts a Motorcycle Legislative Day called BLACK
THURSDAY at our State Capitol. On January 23rd,,
2014 we will once again climb the steps in Olympia to
meet and greet our elective representatives in the House
and Senate. This event is open to ALL motorcyclists
whether you are an ABATE member or not. We believe
that the issues that face us all, and the legislation that
we are fighting for is about the common good of the
entire motorcycling community.
ABATE has participated and collaborated in several
recent legislative successes, including:
• The Nation’s First Anti-Motorcycle Profiling Law that
makes it illegal to stop a motorcyclist just because we
ride a motorcycle or wear motorcycle paraphernalia;
• a law that allows for motorcyclists to convert an offroad motorcycle to a street bike;
• a law allowing for motorcyclist to participate in parades
without a helmet, riding side-saddle or with oversized
handlebars without seeking special permission from the

'Tis the season, and our chapter is busy preparing for
our major fundraiser of the year, CHICKEN FRIDAY
CHRISTMAS! This is our bash at the Barrell Tavern
in Burien on December 13 from 6-9 PM where our
community comes together to celebrate the season of
giving by feeding people. Every penny raised goes
to the White Center Food Bank. Up front costs are
covered by sponsors like The Barrell and Top Hat Taxes,
so that all the money raised can be donated. Last year
we raised $10,000. Opportunities to give include $10
per plate for a buffet dinner, ordering custom towels
created specifically for the event, bidding on auctioned
items including many baskets created by our Deputy
Coordinator, T-bird Vineyard, and just plain, old
fashioned open-up-your-pockets and put your money
in the hat!!! MC Irish will pick you up and shake
you for that part. There is also live music provided
by Orville Johnson, reading of a variety of Christmas
stories, singing, and old fashioned Christmas stuff. If
you haven't done this before, add it to your Christmas
tradition this year. It will make your season!!!
On October 13, 2013 the Key Peninsula Chapter
received our Charter from ABATE of Washington at
the Board of Directors meeting in Ellensburg.
Thankfully, we are finally OFFICIAL!! Well, almost
…. There are still a few details that need to be
completed like: the Chapter flag, we decided to take
the “old” flag since there was a chapter in the area
previously and the flag is all ready; start up funds;
official ABATE of Washington web page; etc.
Yep we have lots on our plate right now. We’re
working at all the business while taking time to visit
the North Kitsap Chapter and ride to the travelling
Wall in Auburn on Veteran’s Day.
Freedom isn’t free and we honor and thank all those
who have served the United States to preserve our
Freedom and help others fight for Freedom.

By the time you read this our holiday family’s will
already have there Thanksgiving dinners delivered.
We pick a couple of family’s that would not have
Thanksgiving with out some help, then we bring in the
whole kit and caboodle dinner with all the trimmings.
Then we get the wish list from the kids for Christmas.
On Christmas we return with Jim dressed as Santa
ridding his motorcycle. We bring presents for the kids
and dinner for all. This has been one of Sky Valley’s
traditions for many years....and it’s a good one!
Well, the wind is blowing and the rain is falling, I
guess fall is upon us for sure now.
The holidays are
upon us too and I wish you the best that can be offered.
Elections are over, some good and some not so good.
Black Thursday will be here soon, hope to see you there
as our work is cut out for us. As the year comes to an
end there are toy runs and a few other things yet to do
before 2014 is here. Was a great summer of meeting
and greeting everyone. Guess it's time to put the bike
on the table and look her over real close so I can fix
what needs fixen. Crappy day so maybe I better get
started on the winter projects so I can ride when the sun
comes out.

Randy and I reported on the STEAM meeting
we had in Ellensburg and the BOD. There was some
good info to share with the chapter, as I am sure all
the chapters that came learned. I think everyone should
attend a STEAM meeting to give insight as to who we
really are. Thanks to all who put that on!

Our monthly meeting was well attended with four
members from Tacoma Chapter, our chapter rep Sonny
Boy, and the State Ambassador at Large, Dutch. Always
nice to have visitors from other chapters.
Our combined Halloween party with the Tacoma chapter
was a big success. With lots of people coming in full
costumes, we had people dancing most all night long.
It was a pot luck and we had lots of food all night long.
Our chapter has added two members to our legislative
committee and are excited about all the things coming up
this year in Olympia. It is our intention to be a lot more
involved in legislative affairs this year and expanding
our legislative committee is just the start.
Halloween also starts off Spanaway chapters Toasty
Toes Sock Drive. We have expanded from one donation
box to three this year at three spots in Spanaway. We
gathered over 300 pair last year for (BASH) Bikers
Fighting State Wide Hunger for their annual Christmas
baskets. Donation boxes are located at Uncle Sam’s Bar
& Grill, The Oak Tree II, and at the Roy Y Sports Bar.
We are all looking forward to the Toy Runs this
year. For the big one, the Olympia Toy Run, on Dec. 7th.
we are meeting at Uncle Sam’s for a buffet breakfast at
8:00 am and leaving at 9:30 am to go to meet up at Red
Hog Leather located at 10518 So. Tac. Way with anyone
else that wants to ride up. We’ve invited Tacoma, Key
Peninsula, South King County, and East Pierce County
chapters to join up with us there to ride to Olympia in a
big pack like we used to. The owner of Red Hog Leather
is an Abate member and has offered to have coffee and
muffins available for us. Everyone is welcome.
Next is Tacoma’s Toy Run on Dec. 14th. We look
forward to joining the Tacoma chapter to deliver toys
and gifts for this special local run to a women’s shelter.
Later that night we will have a Christmas Party at Uncle
Sam’s Bar and Grill with a white elephant gift exchange
($20.00 gift limit). This will be a potluck event starting at
6 pm. Justice Creek will play good southern rock for us
later that evening. We will have the pool table moved and
extra room for dancing. Should be a good fun filled day.

state and chapter officers and attending members. A big

event a fun and successful learning event.
Our chapter just had its annual Halloween Party
fundraiser, and great time was had by all. A special

below.) The information indicates that helmet use
does not prevent accidents or TBIs. When it comes to
our safety, it should be our choice. Rider training and
motorcycle awareness programs prevent accidents. A
motorcycle awareness section is in the Idaho motorist
training manual but missing in ours.
Legislators need to enact laws and legislation based on
FACTS and the will of the People, not party politics or
their OPINION. At election time, vote for candidates
that support the TRUTH and the founding principles
of America. LEGISLATIVE ACTION COMMITIEE
Thirty one states allow Freedom of Choice for adults
related to motorcycle helmet use. In Washington State
we do not have that choice. The main reason, based
on opinion or “statistics” for mandatory helmet use, is
“public burden” and that helmets save lives and offer
crash protection. The factual information from the WA.
Dept. of Health shows traumatic brain injuries (TBI’s)
occur to helmeted riders, most likely DOT approved
helmets. If there IS a public burden, helmet use appears
to be the cause.
In Idaho, a helmet choice state, the facts show that in

Policies for the ABATE Newsletter
The deadline for submissions to the ABATE
Newsletter is the 15th of the month prior to
publication.
Chapter reports must be submitted by the Chapter
Coordinator, Deputy Coordinator or a person
authorized by the Chapter Coordinator in writing.
Chapter announcements and flyers are free with the
following restrictions:
Chapters are limited to one full page ad per month
If the event is during the first week of the month,
then a full page ad is allowed in the previous
month’s issue.
If the event is not in the first week of the month, the
full page ad is limited to the issue published in the
month of the event.
Chapters may place ¼ page ads for up to two
months prior to the event except for the issue that
the full page ad is inserted. Chapters may not have
a ¼ page ad and a full page ad for the same event
in the same issue. Full page ads may be allowed
if there is space available in months prior to the
month of the event at the sole discretion of the
Newsletter Team.
All flyers submitted for publication for Chapter
events must have “ABATE of Washington” and
the Chapter name at the top of the flyer. Use of
the ABATE logo is optional. Any flyers submitted
without this information will not be considered
Chapter events and will be subject to policies
contained in these rules. This may require payment
before the flyer can be published.
Charities with 501 (c) (3) status must submit a copy
of their IRS status letter to the Newsletter Team
before their ad can be published. All events must be
motorcycle related. There is no charge for charities
to place ads under these conditions on a space
available basis. If there is no space available, the
charity has the option to pay for the ad at current
published rates.
No other discounts or free ads will be allowed.
Commissions: Any ABATE member or Chapter
may earn 10% on any ads sold for the newsletter.

The ABATE of Washington Public Relations Officer
position is open. If interested in this position please
contact the State Coordinator or West Deputy
coordinator.
The Bylaws: Article XIII - Public Relations
The state Coordinator shall appoint, subject to the
aproval of he Board of Directors a State Public Relations
Officer who shall handle all press releases and other
communications on State Organizational matters.
The STEAM manual further explains working with
chapter public relations to develop and establish
working relations with the local community and their
businesses, advertising with the local media and event
coordinating with other ABATE chapters. The State
PR Officer will also be prepared to speak publicly to
recognize and thank the hosts, sponsors, attending clubs,
and other organizations and everyone who helped make
the event a success. Always giving recognition where
it is due. Always seek out new and interesting venues
to promote ABATE of Washington. Always update and
promote the achievements of ABATE of Washington be
it State functions or Chapter functions.
