2015 winter/spring studio School Calendar
We have had a wonderfully busy fall
semester and are looking forward to
a great winter and spring. That said, I
really want to send thanks out to Armin
and all of the Education Department
for pulling together to make the
transformation of Studio 3A as quick
and painless as possible. Improvements
are continuing, but we are really happy
and hope you all are enjoying the space
as well.
MIDLAND CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Our students are some of the most
enthusiastic people around, but there are
some other folks out there who feel they
are creatively challenged (I hate to say I
may be one of them). It is wonderful to
see people who don’t view themselves as ‘artists’ trying something that
may be outside of their comfort zone and REALLY enjoying it.
I am inspired to take a more active role in my own creativity by
participating in some of the classes we offer right here in the Studio
School. I would likewise challenge all of you to try something new
this year; we have a variety of classes that enable you to explore an
art medium with minimal intimidation. We have classes in collage and
montage, printmaking, beginning level ceramics, painting and drawing
classes as well as some great theatre improv classes and workshops.
Resolve to take some time for yourself this season. I hope to see you all
soon.

• Faculty and Student Exhibitions are presented each year in our galleries to showcase the high-caliber work created by our students and instructors.
• Art from the Heart Scholarships are available for any of our educational programs. The application process is simple;
early application is recommended as awards are limited. Visit mcfta.org for information and online application, or contact Debbie Anderson, [email protected]. Donations are also graciously accepted.
• Please be sure we have your best and latest contact information in our system.
• Inclement Weather Policy: Classes will be cancelled in the
event the MCFTA building is closed due to weather or other
unforeseen circumstances. Call (989) 631-5930 before
venturing out in poor weather conditions. Instructors have
the option to cancel classes at their discretion; students will
be notified via email or phone. Cancelled classes will be made
up at the earliest reasonable time.
• Lockers are now available for the convenience of storing
supplies needed to participate in on-site activities for $7
a term or $18 a year.
• Currently enrolled students have studio privileges and are
allowed to work in the studios during open building hours
when there are no classes in session. A keycard/class
ticket is required to gain access. A class schedule will be
posted in each studio. Building hours may vary, especially
if nothing else is scheduled in the building and should be
verified before traveling a long distance or through inclement
weather by calling (989) 631-5930.

Refunds or exchanges for class tuition must be requested prior to the close of the registration period. All refunds will be
subject to a 15% processing fee. Processing fee does not apply to courses or workshops cancelled by Midland Center for
the Arts due to low enrollment or other circumstances.
Late registration fee
Registration after January 15, 2015 will be allowed provided there is space; late registration is subject to an additional
$10 per class fee.
Class supply lists
Most courses will provide a detailed supply list during the first class session in order to ensure you purchase the correct
materials for that class. Instructors will have on hand materials required for the first class.

The Art and Skill of Drawing IV

In this fourth session of The Art and Skill of Drawing
series, students will focus on drawing concepts,
developing individual expression and finding one’s
natural artistic language. Students will also have
the chance to work with different drawing mediums
not used in the first three classes.
This class is open to intermediate students. The
three previous Art and Skill of Drawing classes are
not prerequisites, but at least two years of drawing
experience is required. All students will receive
individual instruction, no matter what their level.

Capture the figure quickly, accurately, and
confidently. Figurative drawing has always been
the most challenging and expressive subject
matter for artists. This is a class for anyone who
has always wanted to learn how to draw the
human figure, as drawing is of unclothed male
or female models each week. Emphasis is on
proportion, anatomy and representation of the
figure as a dynamic, living entity. Model fees are
included in the tuition.
This class is for ages 18 and above. Ages 16 and
17 are welcome with written parental consent.

Artists explore their individual genre of work using
the media of their choice. The class will meet for
one and a half hours each week for discussions,
questions on work in progress and designing new
strategies for conceptual expansion. There will
be two formal critiques in this course; each will
last three hours, one in the middle of the term
and one the last day. The artists will have the
opportunity to bring two works for review. The last
critique will consist of a locally well-known artist
or art-related professional invited to participate in
the review. This course is open to intermediate
and advanced artists only.
The Art and Skill of Drawing VI
Expand the boundaries of drawing…go beyond
mere rendering…be more experimental! Learn
what it means to “experience” the nuances of
creativity while drawing. Frottage, image transfer,
the language of line and inventive mark making
are some of the techniques that will be explored.
Recognize that in your drawings you can address
concepts like emotion, expression, communication,
symbolism, and metaphor. A variety of art materials
will be used such as: acrylic ground for pastel,
silverpoint ground and micaceous iron oxide. We
will experiment with alternative substrates for
drawing by using acrylic products to create “skins”
Take the plunge, become more creative and let
your imagination run wild. This class is taught by
two teachers; Valerie Allen and Armin Mersmann,
both well known for their individualistic artistic
styles.

are not in use. You do not have to have taken The

painting. This class is a combination of technique
and art history with emphasis on composition,

a work of art that expresses the statement the
artist wants to make.

Personal Visions in Collage
and Mixed Media

Reinvigorate your creative spirit and expand
your artistic vision beyond the world of paint and
canvas. Students will explore the creative process
through a variety of guided exercises as they
create art using found objects, handmade papers,
and the wide range of materials and techniques
available to mixed media artists. Students familiar
with mixed media techniques will have the
opportunity to go beyond the familiar and add to
their creative resources.
Explore the many ways one can use drawing
materials, paints, mediums, found objects,
and handmade papers to make original works
of art. Students will learn to create dynamic
and interesting compositions as they explore
new formats, try new substrates, acquire skills
in creating papers, transferring imagery, and
applying paint in methods unique to mixed media.

Beginning Oil Painting

Artists will begin to explore creative ways to express
their artistic vision in oil. Open to students who have
no experience in painting or for those who need
a refresher course. Students will learn about the
materials and techniques unique to oil painting.
They will practice observational skills as they explore
still life and landscape subject matter. They will
learn how to manipulate brushes, mix color and
apply paint using traditional and contemporary oil
painting procedures. Students will be introduced to
the grisaille and alla prima methods of painting.

Jewelry – Lost Wax Casting

The versatility of wax enables creations to take on
endless designs. Take your idea from paper to wax
model, through the casting and finishing process
to complete a unique piece of jewelry. Learn the
various techniques and processes involved in
working with sterling silver and 14-carat gold. This
class is appropriate for all ability levels. Beginning
students will work on basic projects with individual
tutelage from the instructor; advanced students can
work on any desired project.
Learn fundamentals of fusing glass while creating
your own artwork! Topics will include glass
compatibility, firing schedules, annealing, design
and safety. Each student will create one 5- to
6-inch tile and 2 small jewelry pieces. Finished
work will be ready for pick-up the following week.
No experience necessary. Safety glasses will be
provided; bring an apron or smock if desired. Long
pants & comfortable closed-toe shoes should be
worn.
Gold or silver can be ordered for a fee from the
instructor.
Material fee of $25 must be paid to the instructor.

Explore basic photography principles such as focus, exposure and
composition from behind the lens of a FILM camera and learn to work
independently in our darkroom. Film has the advantage of creating very
high resolution images with elegant simplicity. Students must have a
manual 35mm or larger camera, a tripod and a manual for their camera. A
limited number of loaner cameras are available. Class fee includes 2 rolls
of 24-exposure black-and-white film and 25 sheets of 8x10 printing paper.
If you have taken this class before Steve will work with you on different
projects.

Photographers of all experience levels will explore the technical capabilities of
their cameras while learning to ‘see’ as photographers. Practice challenging
techniques in camera and post-production editing. Experiment with alternative
photographic processes, darkroom techniques and digital printing. Through
critique you will learn to recognize a strong photograph and print. Required
equipment: camera, tripod and a notebook.

Hand-fabricated jewelry offers a wonderful
opportunity to explore the versatility and endless
possibilities of manipulating precious metals and
gemstones into objects of adornment. Soldering
and the use of a jeweler’s saw are among two of
the fundamental jewelry manufacturing techniques
students will become proficient at when working
in gold or silver. Students will also learn essential
geological information about gemstones and how
they should be cared for during the manufacturing
process. All raw materials must be purchased by
the student at an extra cost.

Beginning Ceramics

You are in for a great adventure! Ceramics is
one of the most versatile mediums of expression
available. Learn the basics of ceramics: how to
manipulate the clay and make it do what you
want, how to operate the various machines
and tools at your disposal and have some nifty
pieces to show for your hard work.
The first portion of the class will have students
working on techniques while incorporating
the personal touches which make the art your
own. Once the basics are grasped, students
will use the knowledge gained to explore and
experiment. Feel free to depart from the class
standard, but be prepared to explain “why?”
We will also discuss conceptual issues such as
Form vs. Function.
The studio will be available for working
independently outside of class time. Clay
can be purchased from the instructor for $35;
porcelain for $45.

Intermediate Ceramics

Fine-tune your skills and build on your existing
knowledge of ceramics. Whether you choose
handbuilding, slab construction or wheel
throwing, explore ways to improve techniques
and create carefully constructed pieces.
Work on your own projects with guidance
from the instructor as needed. Various
intermediate techniques/concepts/projects will
be demonstrated during the semester. Want a
challenge? Project assignments will be given
upon request. Group critiques will be held
periodically.

can be functional, but also sculptural in
nature. Switching the emphasis to scupltural

Perspective for the Artist

Trouble understanding perspective? Then this four
week class is for you. You’ll learn the basics of one,
and two point perspective, including: vanishing
points and horizon lines, creating ellipses, how
to make objects in your drawings look close to
the viewer, and how to make others look further
away. Whether it’s a landscape or a still life this
knowledge of perceptive gives a natural look to
your work. Additionally you’ll learn ways to add
a sense of depth to your drawings and paintings,
even in those times when you may not want to use
formal perspective. Total beginners welcome!

behind every play, working with the actors and
designers to create the world of the play. If you
have a basic knowledge of theatre terminology
and practices, and are interested in exploring the
fundamentals of stage direction, we invite you
to join us as we examine the primary elements
of staging and directing a production, from
initial concept to opening night. Each of the four
sessions will have a different area of emphasis:

Engaging explorations of science topics geared towards young
adults and adults.
Stage directors rarely have the opportunity to
exchange ideas and work directly with other
experienced directors. In this hands-on workshop,
directors will work with actors to explore
advanced techniques of staging, theatrical
conventions, script analysis and communicating
effectively with actors. As each director works
with the actors, the directing group will act as the
audience, analyzing and discussing the various
elements being explored.

covering gardening basics, from seed to transplanting.
Participants will take home herbs to grow in their own garden
or windowsill: basil, thyme, cilantro and nasturtium.

Beyond Point-and-Shoot: Smartphone Photography

Maximize the built-in camera functions and manage some of the most powerful
apps out there. Gain an understanding of basic photography concepts. Learn about
shooting and editing apps (free apps and those requiring a minimal investment, in
the range of $1.00 to $7.99), how they work and examples of before/after images
utilizing them. If you want to just take snap shots and load them on your computer,
use your smartphone as a digital sketch book or want to make serious art, this is
the class for you.
Day one: Explore examples of smartphone photography, learn about apps, how to
download them and of course taking pictures with your smartphone. See hands-on
demonstrations on how to take an ordinary snap shot and make it a ‘work of art’ with
just a few apps. You will be challenged with an assignment for the next meeting.

Day two: Continue with a review and discussion of your newly acquired app, any
lingering questions about using your smartphone. We will take photos, manipulate
them and learn more in-depth techniques for creating good shots and indeed art.
You will be challenged with an assignment for the next meeting.
Day three: Review your assignment and answer any questions. Explore the world
of sharing your images with others via email and outlets like Facebook, Twitter,
Photoup, Flickr and Instagram.

Artists will be introduced to the unique possibilities of creating one of a kind prints without the use of a printing press. A variety of materials will be
used in this journey which features the Gelli-Art Gel Printing Plates. These plates are ideal for creating spontaneous monotypes that can easily
develop into an exciting series of prints. We will work quickly and abundantly! Typically artists print over twenty to thirty prints during the day.
Topics to be covered:
•
Build on similar shapes and colors to create a series
•
Prepare your print using the additive and reductive process methods
•
Understand the mystery of a ghost print
•
Experiment with different types of printmaking paper
•
Discover your own language by working with collage elements and alternative papers
•
There will be a final critique of the day’s productivity at the end of the workshop.
Gelli-Arts 6 inch by 6 inch Gel Plate will be available for purchase through Intermission Museum Store at 10% off the retail price of $19.99. The
plates will be sold in the store prior to the workshop and also at the workshop. Students will be responsible to purchase their own Gelli-plate.
Brayers and all the paints used in this workshop will be provided for the students. The paints are by Golden Artist Colors. A detailed list of additional easy to find supplies will be provided at registration.
