Dan… TODAY, THE CHURCH CELEBRATES “CATECHETICAL SUNDAY.” Catechesis is a major part of the mission of the Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear, “Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church’s life . . . her inner growth and correspondence with God’s plan depend essentially on catechesis” (no. 7). It is so much more then just what goes on in a religion class — be that in a catholic school or a parish religious education program. It is the entire process of helping people to be formed as disciples of Christ. All of us are called to be witnesses to Christ and models of the way of life he taught us. Therefore, we all have a part to play in catechesis. Today, though, we celebrate all those who take on special roles in teaching others the faith. One important group of these are the teachers (i.e. “Catechists”) of our parish religious education classes. These volunteers generously give not only their time during classes, but many additional hours studying the faith, attending workshops and meetings, and preparing lesson plans. They deserve our appreciation and support in this important ministry. While we do have a great program here at St. Thomas A’ Becket Parish to teach our young people the faith, that is only part of the effort. Our classroom catechists can only do so much in the limited time they have. To be successful, to really help our boys and girls, young women and men, to become good disciples of Christ, the faith must be something that is taught, learned and lived in the home. When a parent, brings a child for baptism, they hear, in the very beginning of that rite: “You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so, you are accepting the responsibility of training him/her in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring him/her up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?” The parents then publically respond “We do”. With that, parents accept the role of being catechists for their children. Thus the home, the family, becomes the first “religion class” anyone attends — and as is often proved by reality, that it is the “class” in which they learn the most, whether that be positive or negative. If the faith is not practiced at home, it is rare that formal religion classes alone will cultivate good Christian disciples. We do what we can as a parish to teach the faith, but let us pray today that all families of our parish may be the best of “classrooms” where the beauty of all that Jesus taught us may take root and bear fruit in our young people. I’d like to note that, although I’ve only been here two months, from what I’ve observed of the number of young people at Mass, the good group of altar servers we have, the large number enrolled in our religious ed. classes, the number of young people I saw helping at the Festival, and the existence of high school prayer groups, I believe that this parish is a place where, by and large, the faith IS being lived and passed on! My prayer and efforts as pastor, will be to help that continue and even to enrich and expand on those efforts. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEXT WEEK, ON SEPTEMBER 23, OUR NEW CHURCH WILL BE ONE YEAR OLD! Because a church building plays such a significant role in the lives of faithful Catholic Christians, the day on which a church is dedicated, becomes a solemnity within a parish. A “solemnity” is the highest significance given to a liturgical celebration. Thus, although the actual day falls on a Monday, we are able to celebrate it on Sunday, September 22, in place of our regular Sunday celebration. At all of our Masses next weekend, we will have special prayers, special scripture readings, and special music! We really have a beautiful church here at St. Thomas A’ Becket parish and, although I wasn’t here for the dedication, I’m thankful, excited and honored to be here to celebrate its first “birthday!” ROSARY FOR ERNIE CLAYTON — SEPTEMBER 17, 2013 VIOLANDA GING — SEPTEMBER 24, 2013 The Rosary will be recited for the repose of the souls of Ernie and Violanda on the above dates. This will be at 8:40 a.m. before the 9:00 a.m. Mass. We invite you to join us in this act of charity. May Ernie and Violanda rest in the peace of the Lord. HOME WITH THE LORD Heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Mildred Humphrey, mother of Janice Korenoski of our Parish. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed be embraced by the Heavenly Father unto everlasting life. May Mildred rest in the peace of the Lord. 2013 MASS BOOK The Mass Book for 2013 is now filled. You can still request a Mass, it will just be offered by another priest in some other parish or mission. We will be accepting Mass Requests for 2014 beginning, Monday, November 4. Details to follow in a future bulletin. 2014 ST. THOMAS A’ BECKET CATECHETICAL SUNDAY This Sunday, Dioceses across the nation celebrate the important ministry of catechesis in the life of the Church. The theme of this year’s observance is, “Open the Doors of Faith.” This gives us the opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. This weekend at the 10:15 Mass, St. Thomas A’ Becket recognizes and thanks our catechists and prays that they continue to deepen their commitment of Christ and continue to be strong and faithful witnesses for His love to the World. ACTIVE PARISH MEMBERSHIP In the Catholic Church, we are members not only of the Mystical Body of Christ but also parishioners of a specific parish church, for example, St. Thomas A’ Becket Catholic Church. We become members of the Body of Christ through Baptism. We maintain our spiritual unity with the Body of Christ by our continued participation in the Sacraments, by our resisting sin and by our growth in virtue. We become and remain active parishioners of a parish by being registered in that parish, by our continued support of that parish, and by our participation in the life of that parish. Membership in the Body of Christ and membership in our parish church are very important. Active Membership in our parish church is required in order to enjoy “active parishioner” status. Attending and Contributing Members of St. Thomas A’ Becket, are determined as follows: 1. 2. 3. By filling out a registration form and thus being registered in the parish, for a sufficient time. By faithfully attending Mass on Sundays and Holydays of Obligation. By contributing to the support of our Parish, through our envelope system or online giving.
