The better the seed bed preparation, the better establishment you will achieve with your new pasture, limiting unnecessary and costly re-sowing. The combination of spray grazing, spray topping and summer cropping can greatly reduce the amount of time spent cultivating your paddock. Direct drilling is also an option in some circumstances. Contact your local Agronomist for more information. The SPS Signature Range® blends are all small seeded, so it is important not to sow your seed too deep. Drill seed at approximately 1-2 cm into a well prepared weed free seed bed. Use of light harrows or weldmesh behind the drill is best. Rolling after sowing can help especially where moisture retention is important. The clovers in the SPS Signature Range® pasture blends have been SPS KickStart® treated which includes Gaucho® insecticide for red legged earth mite protection for up to 3-4 weeks after sowing. Although the seed treatment gives 3-4 weeks protection, continual monitoring of the pests should continue to ensure long term success of your pasture. Fertiliser Recommendation It is of paramount importance to take a soil test prior to sowing a new pasture. The results will help determine several major issues: 1. If lime is required 2. If gypsum is required 3. What the base fertility is and if any extra Phosphorus, Potassium or Sulphur is needed prior to sowing Best stock option Sheep Beef Dairy Persistence years Establishment Seasonal production 1-2 Fast Winter, late spring 4. Help determine subsequent maintenance fertiliser applications. Phosphorus is vital for seedling root development, especially in the first four weeks. Sow with a minimum of 20-25 kg/ha of Phosphorus. The use of DAP or MAP at sowing will also provide some Nitrogen which will assist in plant development and growth. Rates of common fertilisers to achieve 20kg/ha of Phosphorus are: Triple Super 100kg/ha, DAP 100kg/ha, MAP 90kg/ ha and Single Super 225kg/ha. Strategic Nitrogen application or hay booster type fertilisers are recommended for extra dry matter production for grazing, silage or hay production. Management of SPS Signature Range Pasture Blends Correct grazing management of your new pasture is important to help tillering of the new grasses as well as preventing shading out and to allow light to newly sown clovers. If you can “pluck” a new grass plant without pulling the plant out by the roots, the pasture is ready for a light grazing. Be wary of pugging new pastures if the ground is wet, especially with larger stock. Graze with lighter stock if possible. Monitor your new pasture for weeds and use appropriate herbicide management to control them. Contact your local Agronomist for more information. Rotational grazing assists the persistence of the newly improved pasture varieties and also maximises growth rates. Fresh regrowth that is constantly being eaten off by stock will quickly result in loss of plant populations and in turn lead to weed invasion of your newly sown pasture.
