June - St. Joseph First United Methodist Church
June 2016 First Connection 2950 Lakeview Ave., St. Joseph, MI 49085 www.sjfirstumc.org 269.983.3929 BIGEVENTBIGEVENTBIGEVENTBIGEVENTBIGEVENTBIGEVENT BIGEVENTTBIGEVENTBIGEVENTBIGEVENT Who: YOU and your neighbors, friends, family, work associates, etc. What: A worship service intended for community outreach – “CROSSing Out Cancer.” This will be a service of celebration, hope, and healing Where: In our Sanctuary at St. Joe First UMC When: Sunday, June 26, at 10:00AM (the morning after Relay for Life) Almost every family has been touched, sometimes devastated, by cancer… On Saturday, June 25, our community will be holding its annual Relay for Life. Many of our friends and neighbors, including a team from our congregation, will be participating in this symbolic fight against this dreaded disease. This year, we would like to take these efforts just one step farther. We would like to invite our entire community to a special service in which we will take the time to celebrate the valiant efforts of those who have been on the frontlines of this fight, either as patients, caregivers, or family members. We want to celebrate both, the lives of those who have passed from our midst, as well as those who survive and continue the fight. We want to offer a message of hope that is uniquely tied to our faith to those people who are constantly inundated by statistics of doom and gloom. There will be uplifting music and opportunities to share. And we will end the service with a time of healing prayer for all who wish to be blessed in that way. What do you do? Begin inviting people NOW. There will be MUCH MORE publicity and invitational materials… But you do not have to wait. Who do you know that really needs this? Start praying for them and invite them. Let’s CROSS out Cancer! YOUTH HAPPENINGS June 8: No MS FLAME Thank you to our Sewing Ministry! Sue O’Neil, Diane Goodman and Kim Otte who faithfully cut out the projects; Sara Lawrick who traces the patterns; Linda Abshagen, Lynda Acker, Jean Edwards, Julie Evans, Judy Felland, Marilyn Herrman, Sue O’Neil, Kim Otte, Ella Rimes, and Marilyn’s friend, Mary Lou. And a special thanks to Les Herrman who provides the extension cords so they have enough plugs for everyone, and Jim Martin who faithfully cleans up after us! We will not meet in the summer but know that we will all be sewing or shopping in preparation for fall. The Sewing Ministry is an unbudgeted item with most of our funding coming from members of the group and donations of fabric. Thank you to the Women’s Ministry for the $100 gift! —Barb Petzke We want to thank Dan Colthorp and his youth group members who were able to carry out the Herculean task of cleaning out what was left in our house so we could complete the sale and move on to getting our condo and lives in order here in Midland. The moving sale left a lot of furniture and “stuff” that we had accumulated during our 32 years in the house. Dan and crew showed up with the enthusiasm and equipment to get everything out in a couple of hours. The rain that came did not slow them down. This really helped us out and gives the youth a good supply of items for their rummage sale. Also, we want to thank Mary Ann and Gene Robinson, the experts for all things rummage, for showing up to advise everyone on the move and for providing their nearby garage for interim storage until the rummage sale. After almost 40 years as members of St. Joe First, we will miss all of you but hope that we will be well enough to come back when we can to see everyone again. We especially appreciate the prayers and support for June with her health problems this year. —Lynn and June Rayle Newsletter article deadline has changed to the 20th of each month! Do you recognize this SJ First UMC “saint”? This fellow has been silently fixing items in need of repair around the church such as the parlor door, lighting in the sanctuary, fixing tables, mowing the church property and various needed repairs that he saw, but we are not aware of. The response to our book drive has been terrific, both from the church and the community thus far. People have been coming in daily from the community and dropping off books and monetary donations to defray shipping overseas costs. The collection goes until the end of June. Bibles and Christian enriching education materials are still welcome. We have received home school, seminary, college textbooks and encyclopedias as well. You are doing an excellent job of cleaning those shelves! (Please no more cook books, we have enough). Keep up the good work! Any questions? Give Marilyn Herrman a call at 449-9963 —Marilyn Herrman MISSIONS SEWING MINISTRY UPDATE May 9th found three of our snow birds back to the soup kitchen, helping right where they left off in December 2015. So glad to have them back! Our week to serve came a week earlier, in the month (due to the calendar). As a result our count was down by 18. We served 118. Often time they still have money to buy food. A great group of people, that thank us kindly and appreciate what we do. Our faithful workers were: Gene & Mary Ann Robinson, Carol Starks, Joyce Bliss, Julie Evans, Kevin Kraus and Shirley Johnson. We are back serving our usual menu after Tosi’s Spaghetti for three months. We serve escalloped potatoes with hot dogs, corn, applesauce, cake, bread with cheese slices, milk and juice. The people donating cakes were: Glenna Collins, Dawn Ankli, Sue O’Neil, Annie Kaeding, Julie Evans, Robin Lydic and Shirley Johnson. Juice providers were: Anne Hahn, DeDe Bitner, Gloria Muth and milk providers were: Miriam Pede and Carol Starks. As you can see, it takes several people to make this important mission possible. Our hearts would be warmed if we could see some of our 11:00 am families names on the signup sheet. The sign-up list is located on the Opportunities Desk. Our next time to serve is June 13th. Please feel free to sign up at the Opportunities Desk or call Shirley at 429-9026 if you have questions. —Blessings, Mission Commission GENEROSITY 1 Corinthians 4:2: “Now it is required those who have been given a trust must prove faithful”. It is responsive management. It is based on the belief that all we have has been entrusted unto us to manage for God. Matthew 10:8: “Freely you have received, freely give.” Employ all God has entrusted you with and enjoy the happiness of giving effort, time and resources. Thank you for being consistent and wise stewards this year. Let us continue for the summer and the rest of the year God Bless us all! —Fred Breitkruez During church on April 24th, we celebrated the items completed since April 2015. These included: 30 chemo turbans, 143 boys’ sets (tank top & shorts), 188 girls’ sets (gowns & shorts), 118 pairs of boys’ shorts, 48 gowns for layettes, 68 sweaters for layettes, 46 diapers for layettes, 84 school bags, and 37 sewing kits! In addition, a number of school bags have already been taken to the Emergency shelter. The Missions Commission fills them with supplies needed. We also deliver completed chemo turbans to the Berrien County Cancer Center. The other items are taken directly to Haiti by Del Troutman when she goes to the Papillion Orphanage or are delivered to the Midwest Mission Distribution Center. This ministry has a long history in this church! The earthquake in 2010 inspired the group to become more active, meeting monthly through the school year. Our sewers have included elementary, middle and high school students and adults to the age of 80. We also have a faithful crew that shops for the fabric (watching for the best sales to get the most for our money), cuts out the projects and sew on the third Saturday, and many days at home. What a wonderful group! You are all a blessing! The statistics in the first paragraph tell just one year’s story. I don’t have records for all six years, but here are the numbers for the past three years. We have completed 414 boy’s sets, 437 girls’ sets, 93 layette gowns, 204 pairs of shorts, 233 sweaters, 308 school bags, 77 sewing kits, dozens of chemo hats. Unfortunately, there is still a need! We continue as long as there are children without clothes, children being treated for diseases in Grace Hospital, people being treated for cancer, children and teachers in need of school bags. Please join us! —Jean Edwards and Barb Petzke REMEMBER OUR CHURCH FAMILY MEMBERS IN NURSING AND RETIREMENT HOMES, THOSE HOME BOUND IN YOUR PRAYERS Caretel– St. Joseph Anona Myers Royalton Manor- St. Joseph Susan Larsson Whitcomb Towers– St. Joseph Edith Ammeson, Bob & Jean Smith, Jimmy Butt, Noreen Sonnenberg, Joyce Coniglio, Paul Stright, Dorothy Crow Woodland Terrace- Bridgman June Clauss, Wylna Johnson, Nancy Eggers Shenandoah Valley Westminster-CanterburyWinchester, VA Dorothy Gray At Home Betty Cassidy, Wayne Hatfield, Pam Lockwood, Fred Mead, Marguerite Thierbach FLAME is FIRED UP to FIGHT CANCER Our church has a team taking part in Relay for Life at the Berrien County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 25, to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. SUNDAY Prayer Calendar and Bible Reading Plan JUNE 2016 Secret Saints Revealed A very special thanks goes out to many “Secret Saints“ who have gone out of their way to show out college students they are still cared for as they are starting their next step. Twelve of these young adults received e-mails, cards and care packages throughout the 2015-16 school year, but most importantly they received encouragement and prayer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them. You are a true “saint“ to these young adults. Lakeview Resurfacing Project Lakeview Avenue, from Hilltop Road to West Highland Avenue is slated to be resurfaced this summer. The tentative plan is to start mid-June and complete the project prior to Labor Day. The project includes resurfacing of the asphalt street, replacement of the storm sewer between Colonial Avenue and West Highland Avenue, and upgrades to sidewalk ramps. LOVE THE NEW CHURCH LOGO? Dear Members and Friends, We know that this cooler than normal spring has us all wondering when summer will arrive with the seasonally warmer temperatures. The silver lining with this cooler spring has been the prolonged beauty of our spring flowering trees and bushes. We have much to be thankful for, in the wake of the storms, flooding and tornados that have plagued the rest of the nation this spring. Keeping this in mind, the Stewardship Team would like to express thanks on behalf of St. Joseph First United Methodist Church for those who have pledged, tithed, and given to this date. Summer is a great time to invite a friend or neighbor to join you in an activity or worship service at church. Extending a sincere invitation to share an event is an extension of hospitality that only you can give. May God bless you in all your activities this spring through summer. Your Church Staff and Stewardship Team Our church is part of the Kalamazoo District of the United Methodist Church. We are one of five districts that make up the West Michigan Annual Conference and together with the Detroit Annual Conference we make up the Michigan Area under one Bishop. The Annual Conference meets once a year with representatives from each church. This year the West Michigan Annual Conference will be meeting on the Campus of Michigan State University in Lansing. Most of the conference will be held together with the Detroit Conference as we anticipate the merge of both conferences into one in 2018. This year, our Youth Pastor, Dan Colthorp will be commissioned as a Provisional Deacon at the Annual Conference. This is the first of a two step process of ordination to become a Deacon in Full Connection in the UMC. (He will also be certified in Youth Ministry.) You are invited to attend the ordination service on June 12 at 2:00 pm. This church is the sponsoring congregation for Dan and it is important that we have a presence at the service not only to show support for Dan as he begins his career as a Deacon but also to represent our church as the sponsoring body. We hope you can attend and be a part of this great moment in Dan’s life but also as we celebrate the clergy leadership of the Church. The Ordination service will be on Sunday, June 12 at 2:00 pm at the Breslin Student Events Center, 534 Birch Rd. East Lansing. St. Joe First UMC Wins First Prize in the Children's Float Category!!
