CONFESSIONS: Saturday 8:30am to 10:00am FROM THE DESK OF FATHER MARTIN: Shining a Light in the Darkness F ive years ago, I visited the beautiful La Romana region in the countryside of the Dominican Republic. I was on the Seminary’s six-week Spanish immersion and mission trip. It was a fun, challenging, and eye-opening trip, and it was the first time that I experienced complete darkness. The area where we seminarians were staying was subject to frequent power outages. One night, the electricity failed, and, when I woke up, I couldn’t see a thing. I opened my eyes wide and shut them tightly. I blinked repeatedly. For a second, I thought I had gone blind. I held my hands right in front of my face, and I still couldn’t see them. And then I remembered my watch’s Indiglo backlight. I pressed the button and behold: Let there be light! The whole room was lit up by the tiny green light from my watch. All of a sudden, I could see everything. A little bit of light can make a big difference! Mrs. Cris Garcia-Casals Administrative Assistant Office of Religious Education (305) 446-5540 Ext. 213 In the past few weeks, I have been amazed at how God has worked in the lives of the people of our parish. I can’t tell you the number of times that folks have come into our office in tears sharing their stories of suffering, sadness, loneliness, guilt, and anxiety, and have left smiling and laughing. People come with their problems and leave with the light of Christ shining in the darkness. They open their hearts just enough to let in a little light, and, before long, they’re experiencing God in a brand new way. All of a sudden, they’re seeing it. Their whole world is bright! F OURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 7, 2013 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. — Galatians 6:14 MISSION T oday’s first reading from Isaiah was occasioned by the return of the Jewish people from exile. The prophet visualizes the Holy City as a mother welcoming her children home. The people may now look forward to prosperity and comfort. In this postPentecostal season, the Church attributes this sense of fulfillment to the Holy Spirit. Paul, on the other hand, speaks of “the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” It is the single thing of which he will boast, for it is the means by which we are re-created. The comfort and prosperity promised in the first reading are here transformed by a deepening of the Christian paradox. Luke’s Gospel describes the calling and the mission of “seventy-two others,” who are commissioned to bring in the “harvest.” The number is symbolic, since according to Jewish tradition the number of nations in the world is seventy-two. This then is a universal mission, a catholic mission to all the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. NEXT WEEKEND’S MASS SCHEDULE SATURDAY, JULY 13TH 8:00 am 5:00 pm Fr. Ibok Fr. Martin SUNDAY, JULY 14TH 7:30 am 9:00 am 10:30 am 12:30 pm 5:30 pm 7:00 pm Fr. Martin Fr. Ibok Fr. Martin Fr. Loubriel Fr. Ibok Fr. Loubriel I TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION t’s high summer now, school is out, the pace of work slows, and some people drift away. There are visitors in the churches every summer, and familiar faces are “among the missing.” Some find the summer’s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the “sabbatical” rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They responded, “Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we cannot live.” By a curious coincidence, the appointed readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the experience of worship situates us in community, and evokes a commitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society’s life. —James Field, Copyright © J. How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy.” -Thomas Jefferson Though the 2013 Fortnight for Freedom has now come to an end, the impact of those fifteen days of prayer and action is still making waves! This past week, COTLF made banner news on the Archdiocese of Miami’s website which ran a story highlighting the beautiful and challenging homily delivered by Fr. Davis at the start of the Fortnight. The story also featured the wonderful work of our own Public Square Discipleship ministry. The full text and audio of Fr. Davis’ homily is available on our Parish website as is a link to the story from the Archdiocese. From our Kickoff Mass to the special screening of “For Greater Glory” to the wonderful Candlelight Prayer Service for the Nation this past Wednesday, COTLF definitely made the best of this year’s Fortnight for Freedom. Thank you to all who participated in these events and others throughout the Archdiocese. May we all continue to fight the good fight, to “rise up and protect and defend our faith, with energy and conviction!” AROUND THE PARISH SUMMERTIME CHURCH OFFERINGS As we continue to research electronic Sunday offering options, there is one option that is always readily available to each of us that has a checking account. We can arrange to have a weekly or monthly check issued electronically by your bank and sent directly to the Church of the Little Flower. This will be particularly helpful during the summer months when so many of us travel and are away from the parish. As you know, even when we are away, the parish bills remain the same. Thank you for your continuous good stewardship of the parish we love so much. WORLD YOUTH DAY 2013 In a few short weeks, World Youth Day 2013 will be underway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Though we did not have enough time to organize a pilgrimage group this year, we will be following the World Youth Day events closely here at the parish. We invite you to join the youth of the world in prayer during this special week by following along with us. We will be sending out special tweets (@GaudiumCOTLF), Facebook messages (www.facebook.com/GaudiumCOTLF) and Youth Ministry newsletters in conjunction with WYD and you can follow along with the major news and events of WYD 2013 at the official website of WYD: http://rio2013.com/en Stay tuned for the special announcement of the location of World Youth Day 2015 - we WON’T be missing that one! SIGNS AND SYMBOLS We’ve received a few requests recently for information about the signs and symbols in our Church building and architecture. Throughout the summer, we’ll be featuring different areas of the Church to highlight some beautiful signs and symbols that you may have never noticed before! To get us started, have you ever realized that you are “wrapped” by the Holy Rosary every time you come to Mass? The wooden window grills in the nave (From the Dome to the Entrance) of the Church depict the 15 Glorious, Sorrowful and Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Of course, the Luminous Mysteries aren’t depicted as they were only added to the Rosary by Blessed Pope John Paul II in his October 2002 Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae. These beautiful wooden grills are original to the 1952 construction of the main Church building, though the opaque windows that more clearly define the grills’ designs were added in the 1987 renovation project. Also, the eight wooden grills at the ends of the transept of the Church (the cross section of the cruciform structure) depict the Seven Sacraments! MINISTRIES NEWS AND UPDATES ATTENTION USHERS! We are now updating the roster of Ushers and are organizing a new system of communication for the Ushers ministry. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
