He is an art history Pro- fessor from the University of Chicago . . . ART ASIA . . .? WH: This is a very interesting place. Very exciting. First time in Miami they have a fair like this . . . KB: Why Now? Why not 5 years ago? Why not 5 years in the future? What has been building up . . . what has been happening? WH: WH: Exactly. And speed. The speed of growth . . . KB: It seemed like every two months a year passed- something like that. WH: Exactly. So fast. I am teaching here, and doing shows here and also a lot of shows in China. So you feel the difference in speed. KB: If you’re not as familiar- what should you be looking You know China was a very closed country. It took for if you came to the ART ASIA event? What should you many years to become global. And actually started in the look for first? How much has to do with the heart and soul of what the Artists’ want to talk about? WH: I think both. There are a lot of things Artists want to say. They are very skilled. DOU B L E H A P P I NES S SHANGHAI / NEW Y O RK C I T Y I am thrilled to be marking the expansion of the Mark Miller Gallery with internationally renowned artist Kevin Berlin and his dynamic show DOUBLE HAPPINESS. Beyond the captivating beauty of his paintings, I believe the important socio-political messages his works represent will be of great interest to viewers in New York City. DOUBLE HAPPINESS comes to my gallery straight from exhibition on famous Moganshan Lu in Shanghai, China. The exhibition is presented through compelling large-scale oil paintings where artist Kevin Berlin unveils his discoveries about the search for happiness he found in Shanghai within the stories and objects encountered. DOUBLE HAPPINESS features 60 of Berlin’s most recent works, divided into three groups - “Steamed Buns and Double Happiness,” “Cigarettes and Cash” and “Bags.” Each painting tells a story. In Chinese, the translation of “Double Happiness” signifies both “marriage” and the name of a cigarette brand that has been popular in China since the 1920’s. The title of the exhibition is based on the artist’s experience when he discovered a crushed empty pack of “DOUBLE HAPPINESS” cigarettes lying in the street on his first day in Shanghai. The resulting artworks have been featured in Shanghai Daily, ArtZine China, and Smart Shanghai. New York’s historic Lower East Side has always been a “Gateway of America” a “new frontier” for people and ideas. I am delighted to welcome Kevin Berlin’s show into our vibrant neighborhood.
