President’s Message
I would like to send a special thanks to the Tuxedo Park
business owners and residents that have been supporting our
events this year. Without the DJ stylings of Troy Spankie we
wouldn’t have been able to bring our Jelly Bean dance to life.
His music brought our families together in a great night of fun.
Tony from the new Nicastro’s (that recently opened on Centre
Tammy Maloney
Street and 28 Ave) gave a generous donation to our Inner City
Kids Club so it now has the financial resources to put on events like the Jelly Bean Dance. We
will now be running the dance on the 4th Friday of every other month so mark January 24th
and March 21st in your calendars today!
I’d also like to thank artist, Carrie-Phillips-Kieser. Her passion for bringing arts to our
youth shone through at our Remembrance Day art program and is the reason for its incredible
success. She is open to launching a Kinder Art program here in Tuxedo Park on Tuesday
mornings/afternoons. Email her at [email protected] if your kids that aren’t in
school on Tuesdays are interested in attending.

sandwich (realtor style) boards placed around the community.
Posada is Spanish for “lodging”, or “accommodation”; it is said in
plural because it is celebrated more than one day in that period. The
nine-day novena represents the nine months of pregnancy, specifically the pregnancy of Mary carrying Jesus. In all of Latino America this
is the start of celebration of Christmas, we are trying to follow this
tradition in this event we will do the special song, after we can eat and
socialize then we will do the piñatas this
is so fun for everyone and, we will finish
with a dance. Is real fun and we will love if
everyone join us nothing more to brig our
community together than celebrate our
tradition and culture.

Red Rose Florist has been an amazing supporter over the years. Special thanks
to Mariza Willams who provided some beautiful arrangements for us to use as
door prizes at our Remembrance Day Tea last month. The ladies loved them!!
And thanks to Karen Thompson that baked the most delicious apple cranberry
squares ever!
I also want to congratulate Karen Thompson and Teslin Ward on a fantastic
Beer and Brat event. They were up against both a Flames and a Stamps home
game and still succeeded in attracting a great crowd. And thanks to Ian Regier
for the awesome posters and postcards.
And of course a HUGE thanks to all of our volunteers, new and old, at all of
our events this year. We couldn’t do it without you!! I especially want to thank
Lourdes Kelsick. She is doing a great job of representing our newer generation of
community volunteers. Her and her girlfriends have helped to make our events
like the Clothing Swap and the Remembrance Day Tea even more special.
We are looking for a Volunteer Seniors Program Coordinator to help us
better support the seniors in our neighbourhood with programs such as a snow

Park Community Association, passed away on
Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at age 97. He was
a lifetime member of Tuxedo Park. He built a
house in the community in the early 1940’s
on 26th Avenue NE with his wife Eva. He
remained in his home until this past summer
where he moved to Wentworth Manor.
Alex was very involved in getting our
beloved community built and filled with
community members. He truly enjoyed the
senior’s summers at the hall and loved to talk
to residents young and old.Alex was still a
voting member of Tom’s Junction (previously
Tuxedo’s Senior Junction).

Message from the Vice President
What a month! In the last month we have seen a group of hardworking volunteers put together a couple of very successful events.
First, it was a Jelly Bean dance which was enjoyed by many families
and then a family social event on October 26th. This just goes to
show how a few community members can work together to create
great events for everyone to enjoy and meet their neighbours. There
are more Jelly Bean dances scheduled for the future - check with website for more details on upcoming events - www.tuxedoparkcommunity.ca. You can also subscribe to the monthly newsletter or follow the
community association on Twitter and Facebook.
If you have any great ideas that you would like to see happen, let
the Community Association know or if you just want to get involved,
also let us know! One idea that we are thinking about for 2014 is a
‘Taste of Tuxedo’ - a food tasting event that would feature all of the
restaurants and grocery stores in the neighbourhood!
The annual Breakfast with Santa is also scheduled for Dec 7th
from 9-11 am, we look forward to seeing you then.
The municipal election is over now and whether your candidate
won or not, it is important for you to remain involved and question
your City Councillor, your MLA, and your MP as to what they are
doing to make your community a better place to live include returning tax dollars to your city and your neighbourhood.

December update - Edmonton Trail
Road Reconstruction Project
Edmonton Trail, from 28 to 41 Avenues N.E. has been reconstructed this year under the Major Roads Reconstruction Program. By the
end of November, reconstruction work should be mostly complete.
Edmonton Trail was closed for a week in late October between
33 and 37 Avenues in order to replace major underground utility
crossings. This work was done in conjunction with the reconstruction
project. In spite of the snow on Oct. 27, crews were able to complete
this work and open the road again by Nov. 1.
The road is now open to traffic, although some localized access disruptions and lane closures will be required during November in order
to complete any minor remaining work. This primarily includes concrete and landscaping work next to the road.
If winter weather conditions do not permit the completion of
some items, any remaining minor work not completed this year will
be completed in the spring.
Once the construction season has ended because of weather, the
road will be open to four lanes of traffic.
The sidewalks on both sides of Edmonton Trail have been replaced. All bus stops that were re-located during construction have
been returned to their original locations. The streetlights have also
been replaced along Edmonton Trail.
Future work
The next phase of the Edmonton Trail Road Reconstruction project includes the area from 16 Avenue to 28 Avenue N.E. This work
is tentatively planned for 2014. More information will be provided
when it becomes available.

Editor’s Message
by Shannon Bowen-Kelsick
As we wrap
up 2013, it is
always enjoyable
to be proud
of ourselves, of our families and friends
and of our city and community. It has
been a challenging year for the community
association. The board, volunteers, and
life time members were faced with tough
questions this year: Should we shut down
the hall? What is the role of the community
association? How much can we do, and what
can we not take on? How do we get people to
care even more about our communities?
Tuxedo is a very diverse community that
is going to see more and more businesses
opening up, expanding and getting more and
more popular. Development has absolutely
exploded in our community; new houses are
popping up on nearly every street. Service
providers like 1835 House will continue to
want to be in communities like Tuxedo’s due
to our diversity, access to transit and walkability. To encourage growth and change in
the right way for our community we need to
know what is happening, communicate that
with our community, and have a diverse group
of people on the board and volunteering that
reflects our community.
We have worked very hard to make a
positive impact in our community, and I am
very proud of everyone that has been working
so hard over the past year to get to where
we are, it has been an incredibly successful
year. This does not mean it has been easy. If
you know someone that has volunteered or
contributed in some way to improve Tuxedo
or our neighbors in Highland, Crescent,
Mountview or Mountpleasant, or really
anywhere…. Give them a thank you, nod or
a high five!
Without a community association, our
City Councillor would not have the focused
guidance he needs to represent his ward over
8
Tuxedo Park Backyard Gazette
the next four years, The City of Calgary Parks
and Rec would not know what improvements
we want done to our parks, City Police would
not be able to easily communicate with
our community, event information would
not get to our residents, and developments
could glide through City Planning without
community feedback.
Community Associations improve our lives.
I would like to say a special thank you to
our truly fearless and dedicated 2012/2013
President, Tammy Maloney. She has literally
spent days, nights and dare I say months at
the community hall, getting us on track and
focused for the future. Not many people are
willing to take on this amount of volunteer
work, Tammy – thank you from the entire
community! And thank you to my family that
supports me in all of my endeavours. Thank
you to our current board – you are a blast
to work with! And thank you to all of the
volunteers and life time members for helping
keep our community beautiful, prosperous,
open to change and supportive!
Here’s to a great 2014.

Highland Golf Course Development
In May 2013, the former site of the Highland Golf Course in
northwest Calgary was sold to a partnership headed by Maple Projects Inc. Maple has been involved in the Uno and Ten projects in
Calgary, and has focused on rental properties and hotel developments
in Western Canada and the United States.
Maple’s initial plans are to build multi-family homes and some
commercial elements that would revitalize the property, provide ac-
cessible greenspace and offer housing options for Highland Park. The
ultimate goal is for a development that respects the history of the area
while enhancing its future.
With planning for the site in its early stages, Maple is inviting the
community to share their ideas on how the development can best
benefit Highland Park and the surrounding areas.
reImagining: A New Future for the former Highland Golf Course is
a comprehensive engagement process designed to collect ideas and
opinions from the public. There will be three phases of engagement
with the community over approximately six months. The initial phase
will run from November 4 to December 2, 2013.
Input can be shared online through this website, or by visiting the
former Clubhouse on the golf course site. A temporary community
engagement centre has been organized at the Clubhouse where people can stop by to ask questions, give their opinions and learn more
about what the project means to area residents.
Early in 2014, feedback from the initial round of engagement will
be shared with the community, and a second phase of engagement
will be initiated. The final Master Plan for the Highland Golf Course
Redevelopment will be available for feedback in March/April 2014,
before it is submitted to The City of Calgary.
Planned phases:
Phase 1 – Initial Engagement, Nov 4 – Dec 2 2013
Phase 2 – Development Concepts, Mid Jan – Mid Feb 2014

In 1960, after graduating from cooking school at SAlT, my first
job was at the Crossroads Motor Hotel. The Crossroads was the first
to get mixed drinking and licensed dining lounges.
I was the dining room chef. The dining room was the first to get
music in a dining room. As I had sung with some of the rock and roll
bands in the late ‘50’s, I was listening to the band Kitty Mulligen III,
and asked if I could sing a tune. The owner, Bill Forester, heard me
and the Singing Chef was born. Ray Gruff then took over, and we
were instant pals.
Darcy Scott of CFCN was the Grande Ole Opry booker and
booked the stars at Crossroads. I would put on extra Tom’s Famous
Prime Rib for Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Ferlin Huskey, Ray Price
and Faron Young, and then Ray Gruff would get them up on his
music stage.

were all in my kitchen.
Then a movie crew came to Calgary to film “The Naked Flame”, a story about Doukhobors. The crew, Dennis O’Keefe and lovely Linda Bennit, were there and loved our show with
Ray Gruff and loved Tommy’s Prime Rib!
One last story.
I truly wanted to impress my wrestling hero, Killer Kowalski. Stu Hart called and said,
“We will be up after he takes care of Gene Kinskey.” Well, at 11:30 pm, in he came. I was
just finishing my show and I cut him a three pound, three rib slice of prime rib, two baked
potatoes and three Yorkshire puddings. Lenny, the maitre’d, came back with the plate - apparently Killer was a vegetarian!
Well, the fruit salad I made him was humongous and he ate every bite.
Tom had great champions in his kitchen.
